‘The War Z’ Has Returned To Steam After Forced Removal

That’s right. Perhaps the most controversial game of 2012, The War Z has returned to Steam after it was
removed by Valve when fans realized it didn’t have the features it promised. Two months later and like a particularly feisty zombie, it’s back and hungry for your brains — err, money. If you’ve been waiting for The War Z, it’s patched and ready for you. Before you get your wallet out, you should know it’s awful.

‘The War Z’ Review: Possibly The Worst Zombie Game Ever Made

You’ve probably heard about it by now, possibly only in angry whispers from fellow gamers who had been scorned by its disastrous release. The War Z may very well have been the most controversial game of 2012, but it’s also a solid contender for worst game of the year, and that’s pretty damn impressive in a year that brought us XBLA flop Amy, 007 Legends, and another Naughty Bear game. For the unfamiliar, The War Z is a game that was heavily inspired by DayZ, the Arma II mod created by Dean Hall that’s getting a standalone release sometime later this year. There’s not much else to it. It’s a DayZ clone, and a rushed one at that.

Because I’m a glutton for punishment, I decided to try The War Z out for myself. I tried to reassure myself before I hit that big yellow purchase button on the game’s official website, “it can’t be that bad…” I said. I like the concept, and I’m a full believer that there can be more than one DayZ style game out there. Competition inspires innovation, and all that jazz. If you’re up for it and you have a strong stomach, why don’t you join me on this little adventure? I promise I don’t bite, though I can’t say the same for the undead hordes.

‘DayZ’ Creator Takes To Reddit To Vent Over ‘The War Z’ Controversy

Dean Hall, creator of DayZ, the post-apocalyptic Arma II mod that received quite a bit of attention when it released last summer — enough so to warrant the development of a standalone game — isn’t very happy with The War Z. In case you missed the game’s tumultuous launch, after its release many fans found its Steam description to be a little misleading, eventually leading to its removal from Steam and a public apology from its executive producer. Bad news all around, really.

Unfortunately, because of their similar titles, Dean Hall has had friends and family who have confronted him after confusing DayZ with the controversy surrounding The War Z. This has caused some issues for Hall, who decided to vent on Reddit earlier this week. Read what he had to say after the jump.

‘The War Z’ Servers Went Down Earlier Today After Days Of Malicious Attacks

Apparently, a public apology wasn’t enough to remedy the situation with the controversial post-apocalyptic MMO The War Z. Kewk, Hammerpoint’s community manager, took to the forums to update their players on the situation, saying “over the last few days we have been under attack by various forums of malicious attempts to shut down our servers. First we were hit with an attack that would rest our DNS IP so that you could not connect.” They were attacked again today, “This morning we are being hit, again, with a DDOS attack on our login server. We are implementing additional DDoS protection and hope to have this resolved asap.” Kewk added.

The servers are back up now and are hopefully safe from further attacks. The War Z may have been one of the more controversial games of the year, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to do something this. Hammerpoint’s handling of the game’s launch was misguided, but this also punishes the players who, because of these attacks, weren’t able to play the game.

‘The War Z’ Producer Apologizes For “Failure In Communication”

The rocky launch of The War Z was one of the uglier stories of 2012, and Sergey Titov, the game’s executive producer, seems to have been humbled by it. Titov recently took to the game’s forum to thank everyone who played it and apologize to those who weren’t too happy with it. “I became arrogant and blinded by the early success and quick growth of The War Z, our increasing number of players, numbers we were getting from surveys, etc., and I chose not to notice the concerns and questions raised by these members of the game community as well as others.” Titov wrote. Read the full apology after the break.

The Horror Happenings Of 2012: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

A lot happened last year. Some of it was good, some of it was bad, and some of it was downright ugly. I think it’s safe to say that when it came to the horror games of 2012, there was something for everyone. There’s the bustling indie horror revolution, which brought us amazing games like Slender and DayZ, both of which will soon be getting their own standalone games. That was fueled by Steam Greenlight, and even Kickstarter, to a certain degree. Also, zombies. There were a lot of those, too. Too many, even, and I never thought I’d say that. The year also brought us long anticipated sequels to two of the major horror franchises, with Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill: Downpour. Oh, and Bloody Disgusting got a total site redesign. It looks gorgeous now (I know, I’m shameless).

I’ve looked through the highs and lows of 2012, brought them all together, and now I’d very much like to share them with all of you. Let’s look back at the year that was 2012, so we can better prepare ourselves for the craziness that will be 2013.

Valve Has Pulled ‘The War Z’ From Steam, Offers Refund To Disgruntled Fans

This hasn’t been an easy week for Hammerpoint Interactive or their post-apocalyptic MMO, The War Z. First, the dev was called out by fans who found several fibs in their description of the game on Steam, then just as it reached the top of the Steam charts, a pay to revive feature was implemented in a patch. Now, Valve has temporarily pulled the game from Steam so they can work with the dev on getting a build they’re more confident in. If you purchased The War Z and aren’t satisfied, feel free to get a refund.

New “Pay To Revive” Feature Comes To ‘The War Z’ Just As It Hits The Top Of The Steam Charts

If Hammerpoint is aiming for the shadiest launch week, they’re doing a bang up job of it. Not long after a group of players took to Reddit to vent their frustration toward the developer after they posted a misleading list of features for the Steam version of the game, now the dev has slipped in some suspicious microtransactions in the latest patch. The game recently reached the top of the Steam charts, undoubtedly fueled by its low price and abundance of buzz. Unfortunately, that buzz is quickly turning negative.

Angry Fans Call Out ‘The War Z’ Dev For Misleading Steam Description

Gamers sure are a vocal bunch. Good thing too, because this time around a group of players have found developer Hammerpoint Interactive’s description of the Steam version of The War Z to be more than a little deceitful. Yesterday, the game made its way to Steam, and it looks like the dev might have fibbed in the features they said would be in the Steam version, leading several players to go so far as to request its removal from Steam. More after the break.

Get Your Zombie MMO Fix With ‘The War Z’ Available Now On Steam

Hammerpoint Interactive’s incredibly popular post-apocalyptic zombie MMO The War Z has shambled out of its beta phase and over to Steam. The game, which isn’t to be confused with the similarly titled World War Z, or the similarly themed Day Z, is available now for $13.49 for the basic game. If you want some money to spend, you can drop $22.49 for 2,100 in-game credits or $44.99 for 7,500 credits (along with the game). Hammerpoint is referring to this as a “Foundation Release,” which basically means it’s been improved since the beta, but they’re going to continue to add, tweak, and enhance it in the near future.

If you already have the game you can get a serial key that will convert your account to a Steam account so you can enjoy extra features such as achievements, friends, access to your Steam wallet, etc. Anyone here getting this, or are you waiting for the standalone Day Z (or both)?

Stealth And Scavenging Are The Name Of The Game In This ‘The War Z’ Footage

Until now, we’ve only had screenshots to get an idea of what the upcoming post-apocalyptic zombie MMO The War Z will look like. At PAX this weekend, developer Hammerpoint Interactive debuted some impressive gameplay that has one player scavenging for supplies while he tries to reach his friend. There are obvious similarities between this and Day Z, the Arma II mod that will soon become its own game, but there’s still plenty to set this apart from the competition. More after the break.

‘The War Z’, Zombie MMO Is Coming This Fall

The War Z snuck up on us just like the shambling corpse of one of your dearest friends who owes you money, and that you have no reservations about putting a bullet betwixt his or her eyes. The War Z is an open world zombie MMO through and through. It’s almost as if Dead Island and The Secret World got it on and got really freaky and out came this glorious zombie baby. The game was only announced 2 short weeks ago and the closed beta instantly filled up. The nice thing about such a late announcement is that I don’t have to sit around for an entire year pining over the game. Head past the break for some awesome screenshots and more info.

Mow Down Zombies With Your Friends In The Upcoming MMO ‘The War Z’

The unfortunately titled The War Z, not to be confused with World War Z or Day Z, which it seems partially inspired by, is an upcoming zombie apocalypse MMO that’s being brought to us by Arktos Entertainment and Hammerpoint Interactive. It will offer a mix of RPG elements and cross server play–yes, this is PC exclusive, at least for now–that lets you take your character into the server your friends are at. It sounds pretty exciting, as it brings with it massive fully explorable environments connected by hubs called safe settlements, and there’s no subscription. I hate subscription based MMOs, mainly because I’m the type of gamer that will play a game off an on for months pretty sporadically, so that doesn’t mesh well with me specifically. More info and some screenshots after the jump!
