‘The X-Files’ Fights Economics, Talk Of A Sequel

While on the set of his new spy-themed TV show “Hunted” (starring Melissa George) TheX-Files writer Frank Spotnitz discussed his strong desire to do a new film in the series. Despite a perceived lack of audience interest.

He told Screen Daily, “There is a very active and relentless fan campaign for a last movie. I do feel like it would be a terrible shame if that didn’t happen. It feels wrong not to give it an ending around the alien colonisation of earth. David [Duchovny] and Gillian [Anderson] feel the same. I have a clear idea of how it would go and I’ve been talking to Chris Carter about it for a long time. I’ll keep banging the drum whenever I meet the Fox guys.

The article makes it sound like he’s campaigning for a sequel to 1998′s Fight The Future and not 2008′s I Want To Believe, which is a wise move. Except that the 2008 film only grossed $20M compared to the original’s $83M (not adjusted for inflation). Can they get people interested in X-Files again? Or will the series just be rebooted 20 years from now a la Dark Shadows?

The X-Files: I Want to Believe

The studio is keeping the film’s logline under wraps, but stressed the pic is a stand-alone story and supernatural thriller that takes the complicated relationship between Mulder and Scully in new directions.

When a group of women are abducted in the wintry hills of rural Virginia, the only clues to their disappearance are the grotesque human remains that begin to turn up in snow banks along the highway. With officials desperate for any lead, a disgraced priest’s questionable “visions” send local police on a wild goose chase and straight to a bizarre secret medical experiment that may or may not be connected to the women’s disappearance. It’s a case right out of The X-Files. But the FBI closed down its investigations into the paranormal years ago. And the best team for the job is ex-agents Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully, who have no desire to revisit their dark past. Still, the truth of these horrific crimes is out there somewhere…and it will take Mulder and Scully to find it!
