‘The Salesman’ Haunts The Streets Of Chicago In ‘Severed’ Issue #2!

Last month marked the debut of one of the Summer’s most lauded horror debuts with Scott Tuft, Scott Snyder (“AMERICAN VAMPIRE”, “BATMAN”) and Attila Futaki’s “SEVERED”. The series was a runaway sell-out on its first day of release, and beyond the break we have a very special 6 page preview of the second ish in the monthly, which will hit shelves tomorrow! GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: THEoDEAD – ‘Severed’ Issue #1

By now I am sure you are all very familiar with Scott Snyder. After all, the creator has singlehandedly put the horror genre in a sleeper-hold even Hulk Hogan would applaud. However, even though the “AMERICAN VAMPIRE” scribe has been earning his Industry Merit Badges mostly due to his frighteningly good run on DC’s “DETECTIVE COMICS”, he hasn’t even begun to forget about his roots in the horror industry. Instead of taking the road so many others have in the past once they see stardom, Snyder has embraced the genre and sought to not only dabble in it, but to master it. Case in point – “SEVERED” Issue #1, or as I like to call it: “Potential Horror Mini-Series Of The Year”. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: THEoDEAD – ‘Batman: Gates of Gotham’ #2

Last month Lonmonster and myself both chose “BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM” issue #1 as our pick of the week, and to stick with some sort of nonofficial tradition here at Graphic Content I suppose that it will be happening again this month with issue #2. That’s only half true, because my fellow staff writer and I just seem to have perfect taste in illustrated literature. Deep sarcasm aside (for now), Scott Snyder and Kyle Higgins’ debut issue of the series was just as impressive as critics and fans everywhere had assumed it would be, and to put it bluntly the duo are single-handedly redefining the type of quality we come to expect each month out of a Bat-Title. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: THEoDEAD – ‘Graveyard Of Empires’ Issue #1

While there has been a lot of talk about Image’s OTHER war-torn zombie story from Mark Kidwell in “’68″, there has been almost the opposite for Mark Sable’s “GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES”. A travesty really, seeing as the story itself is eerily close to being superior on the script end of things. That is why I have decided to bring you “GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES” as my pick of the week this week. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: THEoDEAD – ‘Red Robin’ Issue #24

Most people will always remember their first. No, not THAT first you perverts, although there is always that too, but let’s focus on the task at hand shall we? Just about every one of us grew up on one central character from the comic book world that we chose as our own personal childhood keepsake. You know the one. The character whose monthly antics captured our imaginations and drove us to pester our parents for all their action figures, and influenced us to go out in the backyard and act like we were something more than we really are. For most that character is one of the big guns such as Spiderman, Superman, or Batman. For me however that character was none of the above. Admittedly, I was a fan of my fair share of the mainstream, but none of them were THE hero in my world. No, in fact my favorite character was but a lowly sidekick, and the butt of a bad joke that was played on the world by Joel Schumacher in the 90s. That character was Robin, but more accurately, the Robin known as Tim Drake. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: THEoDEAD – ‘Fear Itself’ Issue #3

In the past couple of years Marvel Comics has done very little to make their “True Believers” proud when it comes to their big Summer blockbuster story-lines. Ever since the sub-par “hit” that was “CIVIL WAR” the publisher has continually rolled out bummer after bummer, and rarely have they cashed in on the checks they had written before the titles saw the light of day (here’s looking at you “HOUSE OF M”). However, for all of their mistakes, the shortcomings, and the ridiculously large amounts of wasted cash thrown by the way of stories like “SEIGE”, Marvel Comics has once again renewed readers’ faiths this year thanks to Matt Fraction’s brilliant “FEAR ITSELF”. This week will mark the release of the third issue in the standalone title’s run, and beyond the break you can get a 6 page preview and all of my ramblings as to why you shouldn’t let this one pass you by. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: THEoDEAD – ‘The Walking Dead’ Issue #85

(UPDATED: Added a 5 page preview.) The past few months have been some of the most strenuous and terrifying times for the entire cast and crew of Image Comics and Skybound’s “THE WALKING DEAD”. With “NO WAY OUT”, the latest and most controversial story-arc in the series to date, has left a lot of questions unanswered, but most importantly it has created a ripple effect that will be felt for the foreseeable future. With several of The Survivors now dead (or dying), and an cloud of speculation thick above the heads of those left behind, series creator Robert Kirkman is set to release the latest installment of the series with issue #85. What does the future hold for Rick Grimes and the rest of the cast? Can they ever find peace or a semblance of salvation in the wake of the zombie apocalypse? Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: THEoDEAD – ‘Batman: Gates Of Gotham’ Issue #1

There is no better time than 2011 to be a fan of DC Comics’ ever popular Caped Crusader. The protector of Gotham City has no shortage of exciting titles hitting store shelves week in and week out, and even the character’s supporting cast (“RED ROBIN”, “GOTHAM CITY SIRENS”) are thriving. With such a strong foundation and combination of moving parts, on top of a Blockbuster video game sequel on the way, “BATMAN” can simply do no wrong it seems. Adding to the already overly impressive library of titles this week will be the creative team of Scott Snyder (“AMERICAN VAMPIRE”) (who will be picking up the pen for his second story set within the world of the Caped Crusader) and Kyle Higgins (“CAPTAIN AMERICA”, “DETECTIVE COMICS”) with “GATES OF GOTHAM”. The series, which has been in development for quite some time now, will find itself bearing the heavy task of not only sewing up some old plot-holes, but also with setting up storylines for the months to come. But for Scott Snyder and illustrator Trevor McCarthy it all seems just a little too easy. Read on for the skinny…

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: The ‘Witch Doctor’ Is In – Seifert And Ketner Talk About The Biggest Debut In Horror Comics This Year!

This Summer might be one of the slowest in recent memory for the horror industry in film, and admittedly: that sucks. But luckily for horror aficionados, casual fans, and passers-by everywhere, the comic industry is still booming with new and interesting titles that are covered in the good ol’ blood n’ guts. However, out of all of the new upstarts that are hoping to find their footing this year, there are few that have even come close to being as unique and interesting as Brandon Seifert and Lukas Ketner’s upcoming “WITCH DOCTOR” from Robert Kirkman’s newly launched, Skybound Entertainment. The series which follows Doctor Vincent Morrow, Eric Gast, and Penny Dreadful is the first 100% original title to come from the new publisher, and with it it has brought along more buzz than a wicker mask over Nicolas Cage’s screaming head. Up until recently news on the title has been kept quiet, but now with just a few short weeks until the series debut the creative team behind then title took the time to sit down with me and discuss the book at length. Inside you can feast your eyes on the entire interview with Seifert and Ketner, where we cover everything from getting the series off the ground with Robert Kirkman (“THE WALKING DEAD”), the debut of issue #0 with “THE WALKING DEAD”, the series’ initial 4 issue run, and what lies ahead for Dr. Morrow and Co. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: John Layman Gives Bloody-Disgusting.com Something To ‘Chew’ On!

2011 has been a good year for Image Comics’ “CHEW”. The series has not only been successfully optioned for TV rights thanks to Showtime, but it has also netted itself 3 Eisner Award noms. Not bad for a series that most publishers didn’t think would ever sell, much less become an industry-wide hit. However, for all of the odds that were against it, “CHEW” has beaten them all in order to become one of the most surprising creator-owned hit series in years, and all because of the creator himself, writer John Layman. John was gracious enough to sit down and talk to me about the project, the Eisner nominations, and the foray into Hollywood, which you can read beyond the break. Read on for the skinny…

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Brea Grant Brings ‘The Suicide Girls’ To Comics With IDW Publishing!

As a journalist, when you are going into an interview you usually have the same sort of concerns, worries, and jitters that anyone would (Yes, even your fearless Graphic Content Editor In Chief). Normally, they are never of any true relevancy, and in the end the paranoia of a journalist is his greatest foe. However, rarely do you get to sit down and do an interview when you know that it will go smoothly, and be a great read. Luckily, that is the case with the fantastic Brea Grant (“HEROES”, “HALLOWEEN II”, Writer – “WE WILL BURY YOU”) who is once again stepping into the comic book industry with her newest series based off of the ubber hit, cult phenomena, Suicide Girls.com. The series once again pairs the scribe with publisher IDW, and is a great departure from her last foray into the illustrated realm when she brought us the four part zombie epic, “WE WILL BURY YOU”. Full of beautiful women, violence, explosions, and enough raw sex appeal to solve the national fuel crisis, “SUICIDE GIRLS” has the innate to do what most books of its ilk can’t — succeed. Brea was kind enough to sit down and talk with me once again about the series, working with fellow writers Steve Niles (“30 DAYS OF NIGHT”, “CRIMINAL MACABRE”) and Missy Suicide (President of Suicide Girls), as well as the continuing clash of alternative lifestyles and the general public. One of the most talked about monthly running horror stories of the past 5 years has been without a doubt Michael Alan Nelson’s “28 DAYS LATER” from BOOM! Studios. INTERVIEW: Marc Andreyko On Penning ‘Let Me In: Crossroads’

It is no easy feat to be able to take a story as lauded and respected amongst horror fans and critics alike such as “LET ME IN” (“LET THE RIGHT ONE IN”), and add your own spin to it. The original novel written by John Ajvide Lindqvist has now been adapted into two highly successful films, and thanks to Dark Horse Comics and writer Marc Andreyko the series has also made the leap from book, to film, to comics with “LET ME IN: CROSSROADS”. The series acts as a prequel to the Americanized remake of the Swedish masterpiece, and this week myself and Johnny_Trouble were fortunate enough to sit down with the series writer and talk to him about the four issue mini-series. WHY NOT REVIEW: ‘Scream 4′ The ‘Most Heart-Stopping Sequel In Franchise To Date’!

One of my earliest memories of the Slasher film sub-genre (though not my first, that honor went to Carpenter’s “HALLOWEEN”) was my parents renting a VHS copy of Wes Craven’s (“A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET”, “THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT”) genre riffing, completely self-aware industry oddity, “SCREAM”. I was 8, and from the now classic opening frames of a young Drew Barrymore being chased down and brutally murdered just a few short feet from her unaware parents by the infamous Ghostface (A moment, that admittedly at my young age, scared the living crap out of me), to the unforgettable finale, I knew once and for all that horror would forever be in my blood.

Now this isn’t to say that as I walked into the press-screening I didn’t have my reservations. I, like many, look back at the sequels with the same melancholy feelings and mixed emotions. “SCREAM 2” was a passable effort at making Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott), David Arquette (Deputy Dewey Riley), and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) household names of the genre, while “SCREAM 3” was an almost entirely abysmal attempt to wrap-up what at the time was the most successful slasher trilogy fans had been offered since the Golden Years of old. With those thoughts in mind I watched with hopeful reservations as the opening credits rolled. Read on for the skinny…

INTERVIEW: Tyler Crook Takes The Pencils For Mignola’s ‘B.P.R.D’

For many years the world of “B.P.R.D” has been brought to us by the award winning creative team of scribe Mike Mignola (“HELLBOY”), and illustrator Guy Davis (“BATMAN: NEVERMORE”, “HELLBLAZER”). That all changed recently as the artist parted ways with the rest of the “B.P.R.D” crew as his time with the series had come to an end with the final issue of the last arc. Enter artist Tyler Crook. The illustrator was recently announced as the newest artist to take up the task of illustrating Abe Sapien and the rest of the “B.P.R.D” crew, and last week Tyler was gracious enough to sit down and talk about working with Mike, illustrating one of the biggest macabre series running, and arm wrestling. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: ‘Hellraiser’ Co-Writer Christopher Monfette!

With all of the hype surrounding the recently released first issue of “HELLRAISER” from BOOM! Luckily, this is not the case for the Clive Barker and Christopher Monfette penned monthly, and I was fortunate enough to chat with Christopher earlier this week about his work on the series, collaborating with Clive Barker, how to restore fans faith in the series, and even the possibility of new Cenobites.
