Monsterpocalypse

A kaiju-themed collectible miniatures game. It’s a board game that involves battles against a variety of enemy monsters that take place in a metropolis filled with buildings.

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

It involves Jacob, a 16-year-old whose childhood was filled with stories his grandfather told him about an orphanage for unusual children. Among the residents: a girl who could hold fire in her hands, another whose feet never touched the ground, and twins who communicated without speaking. When his beloved grandfather dies unexpectedly but leaves a message behind for his grandson, the teen heads off to his grandfather’s home on an isolated island off Wales. There he discovers the abandoned remains of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. It is in great disrepair and as Jacob explores its bedrooms and hallways, he can see the children were more than peculiar, they might have been there because they were dangerous. And he can’t shake the feeling they are still lurking around.

The World Needs More Jack Skellington Cosplay

We’ve featured some pretty amazing cosplay here — like zombie Iron Man and a Daedric knight — but this one has a special place in my heart because it’s from one of my favorite movies, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. I think Deviant Artist Maho-Urei has done an amazing job in recreating Jack Skellington, but I’ll let you take a look and decide for yourself.

Has Seth Grahame-Smith Completed the ‘Beetlejuice 2′ Screenplay?

It was announced last year that Warner Bros. Pictures would be working with Tim Burton on a continuation to the 1988 Tim Burton-directed hit Beetlejuice, which starred Michael Keaton as a ghoul hired by a recently deceased couple to drive the new owners out of their house.

Seth Grahame-Smith, who took a stab at Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Dark Shadows, was hired to pen the screenplay for the “sequel.” He took to Twitter this morning to tease the following image; a Beetlejuice action figure standing in front of a computer screen with with the subtitle “It’s showtime…” teasing below. The figure, I suppose, is standing in front of the completed screenplay? News soon, I hope.

Burton and Keaton made the movie while they were working on the studio’s first Batman film, which was released the following year. READ MORE

[Random Cool?] There’s A ‘Beetlejuice’ Museum In New York…

Beetlemania lives — inside a cramped studio apartment in Hell’s Kitchen, jokes the NY Daily News. The tight quarters house the city’s smallest and silliest museum, a kitschy conglomeration of collectibles that breathes new life into its famously undead muse: Beetlejuice.

It’s so much fun!” says curator/tenant Bruce Christensen to the mag, whose fascination with the seedy movie character memorably played by Michael Keaton dates back 15 years. “This is definitely one of the top 10 attractions in New York City.

Christensen’s inspiration for the unique assortment of tiny plastic toys, bobblehead dolls, collectible cards and other Beeetle-juicy items came early one morning, as he described in the following video, where he found a toy in a bargain box. The cartoon was what revived his love for the franchise: “For years, I left the TV on when I went to bed,” he explains during a spin around the museum. “One day I woke up and the cartoon was on, and I just loved it.

[OMFG] Tim Burton’s Original ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Poem, As Narrated By Christopher Lee!!!

With the holidays looming upon us, we look back at Halloween with our heads down knowing that it’ll be another year before we can trick or treat again. And while everyone focuses their attention on ol’ Santa Claus, us horror fans typically focus our attention on the classic The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The 1993 stop-motion animated classic was based on Tim Burton’s 1982 poem, and before that inception, Disney has wanted to develop Jack Skellington and his Halloween Town into a short film or TV Christmas special, but feared it was too scary for kids.

Making the viral waves this very morning is a wonderful “The Nightmare Before Christmas” animated short as narrated by the great Christopher Lee! The short features many variations from the final film product, which ones do you spot? READ MORE

[Halloween Treat] Tim Burton’s Mom Made Him A Costume. ‘Alien vs Predator’ Feud Started With Candy…

Mizenscen shared an image of Tim Burton wearing a Halloween costume made by his mother. What’s so cool about this old snapshot is that it looks like the inspiration of Jack Skellington from the 1993 Burton-produced The Nightmare Before Christmas! Go mom!

Artist Edwin David (aka “dwinbotp”) imagines where the infamous Alien vs. Predator battle actually began. It all started with the candy, suggests his hilarious illustration.

[Interview] Tim Burton On Black And White, Science And The Array Of Monsters In ‘Frankenweenie’

Frankenweenie is easily the best Tim Burton movie in a decade. I was almost braced to dislike it, so it was a wonderful surprise to find myself concurring with Brad’s glowing review. In the film, a young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

Accompanied by a few other journalists, I sat down with Burton last week to talk about the differences between the feature-length Frankenweenie and his 1984 short of the same name. We also discussed the film’s embrace of science and horror history.

The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow), while Charlie Tahan and Atticus Shaffer were later added. Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film, and that several of the character names—Victor, Elsa Van Helsing, Edgar “E” Gore and Mr. Burgermeister — were inspired by classic horror films.

[Interview] ‘Frankenweenie’ Producer Allison Abbate On Bringing Tim Burton’s Vision To The Screen And Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’!

In the film, a young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

I recently sat down with producer Allison Abbate (Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Iron Giant) to talk about how she got into animation and what it’s like to address the creative needs of visionaries like Tim Burton and Wes Anderson. Frankenweenie feels 100% like a Tim Burton film (a good one at that), so I was curious about the challenges of addressing his voice. We also spoke briefly about one of her upcoming projects, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Mastodon’s Brent Hinds Prepares Sophomore Release From Side Project West End Motel

A far cry from the roaring sludge metal fury that is Mastodon, Brent Hinds side project West End Motel‘s debut album was described by SPIN as, “…Tom Waits and Tim Burton co-hosting the creepiest vaudeville show ever.” Now, the band will be releasing their sophomore album Only Time Can Tell on Oct. 30th via Warner Bros. Records. You can listen to the track “Burn It Down” here.

Hinds explains, “I grew up listening to Chet Atkins play guitar, and I grew up listening to Brian Setzer play guitar. Jimmy Bryant, Speedy West, all these country-chicken-pickin’-flying-’round-the-guitar-neck guitar players. I got really inspired by it. I’m from way down in the country. It was pretty common to have the interests I had when I was that age. MTV had some hair metal on there, but I was more interested in this rockabilly vibe. Stray Cats were really big at the time, in the ’80s. It was epic.

Winona Ryder (Literally) Rolls Her Eyes At Thought Of A New ‘Beetlejuice’!

I love this story so much it’s not even funny. As you may or may not know, nearly everyone in Hollywood plays the “PC” game, meaning, every answer they give is a load of horse sh*t. Winona Ryder doesn’t play that game.

This past weekend the cast and crew of Frankenweenie took to Disneyland in California to talk about the animated pic arriving in theaters October 5.

With both Ryder and Tim Burton taking part, it was only a matter of time until some fresh Beetlejuice talk hit the Web. While Burton is said to be part of the project (it’s unclear if he’ll direct), Seth Grahame-Smith, the screenwriter behind Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, is working on the current draft. Michael Keaton is also said be returning.

“At the Frankenweenie press junket in Anaheim on Sunday, a reporter enthusiastically told Winona Ryder that she was very excited for Beetlejuice 2 and hoped that Ryder would be in the movie,” says Flixist. “Ryder had just spent the fifteen minutes prior gushing about her emotional connection to all of her roles in Burton’s movies, with a particular emphasis on Lydia. Given that, you’d think she might be pretty enthusiastic about the new movie, or at least somewhat optimistic. Instead, her response was a heavy sigh, a roll of the eyes, and a “Yeah, that would be…great.

Tim Burton himself seemed more optimistic about the project, but was surprisingly hands-off about the whole thing. When asked about the project, he sounded somewhat uncomfortable and gave a non-answer. “Somebody’s writing a version, but I’m sort of…not making any preconceived ideas about it, and…not over-thinking something that I haven’t seen, so I’m just kind of keeping an open mind about it and seeing what comes.” Burton said that he is passionate about every project he goes into, so he could just have his mind on other work, but it seems odd for him to be quite as distant as he is. Thanks to BD reader Matthew R. for the tip.

[BD Review] Brad Says ‘Frankenweenie’ Is The Best Tim Burton Movie In A Decade

Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie is playing the ongoing Fantastic Fest in Austin, so we’re chiming in with a review. In the film a young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences. Brad absolutely loved the film and says it’s Burton’s best work since at least Big Fish. I tend to agree, the movie flys by and gives Burton something to work with he hasn’t had in a while – a good script.

I don’t think Burton has ever connected with his audience like this. While Frankenweenie may not be the best movie ever made, it’s overflowing with passion, creativity and genuine heart. It comes from a place where filmmakers begin their careers, a place deep within the solar plexus that just bleeds with energy and ingenuity.

The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow). Newcomers include Charlie Tahan as Victor and Atticus Shaffer as Edgar “E” Gore.

[BD Review] ‘Frankenweenie’ Revives The Tim Burton Of Past!!!

For the better part of the past decade it had appeared that Tim Burton had lost his mojo. As a fan of his earlier works it felt as if he was just “going through the motions” of directing in order to collect millions if dollars. Everything from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Alice in Wonderland have felt soulless and empty. It comes as no surprise that Burton’s last good movie was his 2003 Big Fish, being that it shares the same emotional power as Frankenweenie, his stop-motion animated feature inspired by his 1984 short of the same name. Burton deals with loss in both Big Fish and Frankenweenie, something that every viewer can relate to. It’s a bit sad that he had to mentally take himself back to ‘84 to reconnect with audiences, but what he delivers is an overtly emotional animated film that’s not only touching, but also eternal.

Frankenweenie, based on Burton’s short and penned by John August, takes us back to Burton’s childhood when the only things important to him were his dog, his parent’s acceptance, and movies. In what could be described as a dark and twisted poetic tale of life, Victor (voiced by Charlie Tahan) loses his dog Sparky only to revive him in an homage to “Frankenstein.” When the town’s kids find out, they also attempt to bring back their pets, only to dire consequences.

Horror fans will juice over Frankenweenie as it takes the classic tale of “Frankenstein” and mixes in an epic homage to Godzilla, The Mummy, Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man and more. It’s such a heartfelt and authentic take on Mary Shelley’s novella that it should make the creators of that fraud ParaNorman weep.

And unlike the horrendous Corpse Bride, the stop-motion was beautifully choppy (it drives me crazy when they smooth out stop-motion in post, which completely defeats the purpose). The animation itself is absolutely stunning, especially the sequence where Victor brings Sparky back from the dead. But much credit goes to the direction of Burton, who chooses to tell much of the story from the perspective of Sparky. You can tell that he really wants the audience to fall in love with Sparky before his ultimate demise (it wouldn’t be shocking at all if you teared up twice by the end credits.)

I may have written Burton off too soon, because this could be the beginning of his career…
