Tobe Hooper’s ‘Djinn’ Buried In Alleged Payoff? New Imagery!

Tobe Hoopers Djinn Buried In Alleged Payoff? New Imagery!

Tobe Hooper – the man behind The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeiest – is struggling to get his latest genre offering released as word behind the scenes is that the film’s producers are burying it…

Last March Hooper got behind te camera for Djinn, a supernatural horror flick that stars Khalid Laith, Razane Jammal, Aiysha Hart, Carole Abboud, Paul Luebke, and May El Calamawy.

Sounding like an Arabic ripoff of Paranormal Activity and Poltergeist, “The story follows a young Emirati couple who return home from the U.S. to discover that their new apartment in a luxury high-rise built on the site of an abandoned fishing village is also home to the malevolent beings known as “djinn.”

With the feature in post-production, news out of Italy (Movie Sushi) is that there are major problems behind the curtain — problems that range to the alleged payoff of the studio’s chairman. You can read a translation inside, and dig on a trio of new images (at least something good came out of this). READ MORE

AFM ’11: First Image From Tobe Hooper’s ‘Djinn’

Looking through the hundreds of flyers we landed at AFM we stumbled across the first ever image from Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist director Tobe Hooper’s Djinn, an Arabic-language film starring Khalid Laith, Razane Jammal, Aiysha Hart, Carole Abboud, Paul Luebke and May El Calamawy.

We also learned that the film follows an Emirati couple who return home from a trip and discover that their new apartment in a luxury high-rise built on the site of an abandoned fishing village is also home to the malevolent beings known as “djinn.”

Sounds like the same subplot as Poltergeist. READ MORE

[Book Review] Tobe Hooper’s ‘Midnight Movie’

Original Texas Chain Saw Massacre director Tobe Hooper has entered the world of novels with “Midnight Movie,” which was co-written by Alan Goldsher.

Now in book stores everywhere, “The good news: Director Tobe Hooper has been invited to speak at a screening of ‘Destiny Express,’ a movie he wrote and directed as a teenager, but that hasn’t seen the light of day in decades. And Hooper’s fans are ecstatic. The bad news: ‘Destiny Express’ proves to be a killer . . . literally. As the death toll mounts, Tobe embarks on a desperate journey to understand the film’s thirty-year-old origins–and put an end to the strange epidemic his creation has set in motion.

Featuring the terror, humor, and sly documentary style Hooper devotees remember from such classics as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Midnight Movie is vintage Tobe Hooper, again demonstrating the director’s place as one of the godfathers of modern horror.

Inside you’ll find Ryan Daley’s review of the book.

I’m not even going to lie: this past weekend I spent some $200s on “TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE” related merchandise. The original novel is based upon a script idea that the horror maestro had scrapped many years ago, but thankfully Hooper will be giving his fans a chance to see the story starting today. below you can get all the details and a screencap of the book’s cover…

Tobe Hooper’s ‘Djinn’ Takes From ‘Paranormal Activity’

The entire production behind Tobe Hooper’s Djinn is out of the ordinary, so much so that I figured we’d never actually see it go behind cameras. It looks like this one is officially a “go” as the National has the first ever behind-the-scenes images and set report that gives us the first ever plot details:

The film is set in 2015 and follows the story of Khaled and Salama, a couple who return home from America to discover their apartment in a luxury high-rise, built on the site of the deserted fishing village, is also home to malevolent beings,” they explain of the story line that sounds a bit like a multi-being Paranormal Activity.

Much like most ghost stories, “There is not that much blood,” said Daniela Tully, the film’s German producer. “It is more of a supernatural horror rather than a thriller or slasher horror. It is a tale told with a lot of respect for the Emirati traditions and it will stay with you for a long time.

Casting continues, but anyone joining the crew must abide by one strict rule: no one can mention the word “djinn” while on set. The measure has been taken out of respect and because it is thought that speaking their name could conjure one up.

Tobe Hooper’s Haunted House Thriller Infestec With ‘Djinn’

It was teased a few months ago that a “big name horror director” would make a wish and bring the latest Djinn feature to theaters.

And that director would be the infamous Tobe Hooper, who’s responsible for such horror classics as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeist. Hooper will get behind the camera for the Arabian haunted house thriller penned by U.S. writer David Tully and backed by Imagenation Abu Dhabi.

It tells the story of a young Emirati couple who return home from the U.S. and discover that their new apartment in a luxury high-rise built on the site of an abandoned fishing village is also home to malevolent beings known as Djinn.

Hooper said: “Simply put, this movie will scare everyone, no matter where you live or what you believe in.” After such dumpers as Toolbox Murders and Mortuary, I’m not quite sure I believe him anymore. His last “fun” movie was The Mangler back in 1995. Yeeeeesh.

Shooting scheduled to begin in the United Arab Emirates in March.

Read the Original ‘Poltergeist’ Treatment: ‘Night Time’!

Something insanely cool was shared with the Poltergeist Fan Site who posted the original treatment for Poltergeist entitled “Night Time”. The site writes: “In early 1980, Steven Spielberg collaborated by mail on a treatment with Tobe Hooper while Spielberg was shooting “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” The treatment, originally titled “Night Time” (perhaps a derivation of the aborted “Night Skies” project), was a ghost story set in the suburbs. Several months after the initial 11 page treatment was written and sold to MGM, Spielberg added about 20 more pages which further fleshed out some of the story’s initial ideas. It’s very interesting to note which elements of the finished film were there from the very beginning. However, more notable are the things which didn’t end up in the shooting script at all. In fact, most of the scenes in the amendment pages are completely different from what would eventually end up on screen. I would argue that what was added/changed later on in the actual screenplay made the story much better.” Wanna read? All you have to do is click here!
