At the Mountains of Madness 3D

Long acknowledged as a master of nightmarish visions, H. P. Lovecraft established the genuineness and dignity of his own pioneering fiction in 1931 with his quintessential work of supernatural horror, At the Mountains of Madness. The deliberately told and increasingly chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition’s uncanny discoveries–and their encounter with untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization–is a milestone of macabre literature.

ALTERNATE: Universal Pictures’ H.P. Lovecraft adaptation that tells the story of geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins (including strange fossils of unheard-of creatures and carved stones tens of millions of years old) and a dangerous secret of the City of the Old Ones that lay beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas.

Guillermo Del Toro Trying Once More For A Tom Cruise Infused ‘At The Mountains Of Madness’

Your daily grain of salt here, please take me before reading this article. Guillermo del Toro, the man of a million projects (wisely) in development, has made overtures about giving his H.P. Lovecraft adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness another shot.

The project died at Universal back in 2011 due to budget issues, and recently del Toro seemed leery of reviving it due to perceived similarities with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Well, he saw Prometheus and he doesn’t think it’s such a stumbling blaock after all.

Speaking to the Playlist he said, “I’m going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss… We’re gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio's] interested… Tom [Cruise] is still attached. I think it would be so fantastic to make it with him. He’s been such a great ally of the project.” As for Prometheus he says, “Not really, I saw it finally and.. yes, there are things in common, but, you know, screw it. Lovecraft was there first!

The would-be H.P. Lovecraft adaptation “tells the story of geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University.

You’ll be able to see GDT’s directing chops back in action when Pacific Rim opens on July 12th. READ MORE

‘All You Need Is’ Tom Cruise Over and Over Again

While Tom Cruise has been the butt of many jokes over the past few years, it’s impossible to ignore just how awesome he is as an actor. He’s welcome into our genre anytime he wants, which is why it’s exciting that he’s joined the high concept All You Need Is Kill, reports Variety.

Based on the graphic novel, the original story is in the vein of Groundhog Day, with a twist: “A soldier in a war against aliens finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed. Through the training and battles he experiences in these time loops, he becomes a better soldier.

While a deal with the studio isn’t officially signed, Cruise has been weighing this role for some time after continued talks with director Doug Liman. The studio has already had the script rewritten to make the character fit Cruise’s age.

Dante Harper penned the script with Jody Harold doing the rewrite. Sources said Cruise liked the script so much that Liman traveled to Pittsburgh, where the thesp was shooting Paramount and Skydance’s “One Shot,” to meet with the actor about the role. READ MORE

A Bloody ‘American Psycho: The Musical’, Tom Cruise?

The long-gestured “American Psycho” stage play is still working its way towards Broadway and the producers behind the adaptation spoke to the NY Post about what me might expect. Dubbed “American Psycho: The Musical”, audience members should be expecting some tunes, while the playwright promises plenty of gore. But the biggest shocker is the productions plans of bringing in Tom Cruise for a small (hilarious) cameo. Deets inside.

War of the Worlds

In H.G. Well’s 1898 novel, “The War of the Worlds,” he invented the myth of invasion from outer space. Martians land near London, conquering all before them, and ruin the metropolis; the fate of civilization and even of the human race remains in doubt until the very last. “The War of the Worlds” is disturbingly realistic both because of its setting — Wells bicycled the route the Martians take on landing — and because of its characters: the superstitious curate, boastful artilleryman, and enterprising medical student are believable if not sympathetic figures, as well as signifying types of fin-de-siecle change and vision.
