Beyond the Wall of Sleep (V)

In this adapation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short story of the same name, William Sanderson plays Joe Slaader – a mysterious mountain man being held in the Ulster County Asylum after the brutal murder of his family. Edward Eischel, a young intern (played by newcomer Fountain Yount), sees something more than just an inbred monster in this new inmate, however. Instead, he sees him as the harbinger of some greater and much darker force. With bodies piling up, his job in jeopardy, and his sanity hanging in the balance he gives in to his obsession with tapping into Joe’s hidden power, risking all that he has along the way.

[Blu-ray Review] Slasher Fans Should be Doing Backflips for ‘The Burning’

Reviewed by Patrick Cooper

In the ’80s, a lot of horny teenage campers got dismembered on screen. The Burning was released in the wake the massive success of Friday the 13th and added its fair share of corpses to the pile. But what makes the victims in The Burning different than those in the majority slasher films is that these kids are pretty damn likable. Usually you can’t wait for the obnoxious teens to get torn up, but the campers at Camp Stonewater are easy to root for. Besides one rapey scumbag, everyone else is pretty cool and the film itself is very entertaining and fun. READ MORE

[DVD Review] ‘The Definitive Document of the Dead’

Document of the Dead, a behind-the-scenes, all-access look at George Romero’s 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead, was originally released in 1985. Over the years, director Roy Frumkes has fleshed out his film school project with follow-up interviews and supplemental footage, resulting in several different versions. I would hazard a guess that most readers caught the version included in the Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition DVD. Almost 35 years after the project originally started, Synapse has released The Definitive Document of the Dead, Frumkes’ (supposedly) final version of his Romero stalk job. Re-edited and re-mastered, and with all-new exclusive material, The Definitive Document of the Dead is the longest version to date. Read on for the full review. READ MORE

Sean Bean And Tom Savini On Screen Together? It’ll Happen In ‘The 4th Reich’

So yeah, The 4th Reich sounds kind of crazy to me so far. It’ll see Sean Bean (pictured inside; “Game Of Thrones”, LOTR), special effects wizard/actor Tom Savini (“From Dusk Till Dawn”), and Craig Conway (The Descent) acting for director Shaun Robert Smith (The Forgotten Ground).

Per The Hollywood Reporter, “Sean Bean has signed to star opposite an ensemble cast including Sean Pertwee, Tom Savini and Craig Conway in Shaun Robert Smith-directed WW2 action-horror film The 4th Reich. Bean, whose resume boasts high profile turns in “Game of Thrones” and ‘Lord of the Rings’, will play a charismatic British sergeant major in the film.

The script, “details the story of a brigade of British soldiers sent into occupied mainland Europe who find themselves up against an enemy created by Nazi scientists as an all-powerful fighting force for what would be the 4th Reich.

The movie was recently purchased by U.K. sale to eOne Entertainment. It is scheduled to shoot this summer and U.K. indie production banner Mann Made Films are currently recruiting more cast. READ MORE

The Theatre Bizarre (The Theater Bizarre) (V)

Directed by: Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Tom Savini, Richard Stanley. A modern horror anthology inspired by the over-the-top shocks of Paris’ early 20th century ‘Theatre du Grand Guignol’.

Down a seedy city street, a young woman is obsessed with what appears to be a long abandoned theatre. One night, she sees the front door slightly ajar and impulsively decides to sneak inside. But there in the vast, eerie auditorium, a show unlike any other unfolds before her eyes. Its host is an odd marionette-like man who will introduce her to six tales of the bizarre: A couple traveling in a remote part of the French Pyrenees crosses paths with a lustful witch; A paranoid lover faces the wrath of a partner who has been pushed to her limit; The Freudian dreams of an unfaithful husband blur the lines between fantasy and reality; The horrors of the real world are interpreted through the mind of a child; A woman addicted to other people’s memories gets her fix through the fluid of her victims’ eyeballs; And a perverse obsession with sweets turns sour for a couple in too deep. But as the stories unfold, something strange is happening to the woman. Something irreversible and horrific. Something that awaits its next audience in The Theatre Bizarre.”

[Book Review] Blood Spatter: A Guide to Cinematic Zombie Violence, Gore and Special Effects

Say anything you want about Blood Splatter, it’s undeniably ambitious. Craig W. Chenery’s guide to zombie effects is packed with hundreds of behind-the-scenes photos and dozens of interviews with the bad boys of latex horror. With its detailed dissection of over 300 zombie films–including time counter notations for every act of zombie violence–there’s no doubt that Blood Splatter is impeccably researched. But what could potentially serve as a bible for zombie enthusiasts comes undone under a series of regrettable missteps. For one, remember those hundreds of behind-the-scenes photos I mentioned? TV: John Hawkes Will Not Be In “The Walking Dead”, Season 3 Location News…

WalkindDeadLand20312 TV: John Hawkes Will Not Be In The Walking Dead, Season 3 Location News...

Earlier this month it was announced that “The Walking Dead” was renewed for a third season and bumped up to 16 episodes. That’s up from 6 episodes in Season 1 and 13 in Season 2. Just recently Tom Savini (who is lobbying for the part) said that John Hawkes was the producers’ choice to play Philip Blake, aka “The Governor”, in next year’s season.

Apparently that’s not the case. An update from Lilja’s Library drops a bomb on that rumor along with some additional Season 3 tidbits.

The small town of Senoia in Coweta County is about to become zombie central for the filming of a hit cable show The Walking Dead. The show is scheduled to shoot in the town in May and construction of zombie sets will begin next week, which will involve 60 local carpenters. Scott Tigchelaar of Raleigh Studios Atlanta says people can expect to see the town a little dirtier than normal to fit the look of the show… It was earlier rumored that John Hawkes would play Philip Blake, the psychotic zombie-killer who declares himself the Governor of Woodbury. Now, it looks like that won’t happen. Hawkes’ publicist states quite plainly that “John is NOT appearing on The Walking Dead.”

Don’t forget that the still ongoing Season 2 returns February 12th on AMC. READ MORE

First time director/screenwriter Scott Bunt pays tribute to the classic Hammer Studio films of yesteryear and the stylish shockers of director Mario Bava with this gruesome tale of an oppressive evil that washes over a small village of innocents. A diabolical ideology has been unleashed on the land, and as the young and pure of heart are forced to suffer unimaginable torture, a desperate few set out in search of answers. Grindhouse

Grindhouse – noun – A downtown movie theater – in disrepair since its glory days as a movie palace of the ’30s and ’40s – known for “grinding out” non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies. From groundbreaking directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez comes the ultimate film experience: a double-bill of thrillers that will recall both filmmakers’ favorite exploitation films. “Grindhouse” will be presented as one full-length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director. Tarantino’s film, “Death Proof,” is a rip-roaring slasher flick where the killer pursues his victims with a car rather than a knife, while Rodriguez’s film explores an alien world eerily familiar to ours in “Planet Terror.” Welcome to the Grindhouse – it’ll tear you in two.

“Death Proof” stars Kurt Russell, Zoe Bell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd, Rose McGowan, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Marley Shelton, Tracie Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michael Bacall, Eli Roth, Omar Doom; “Planet Terror” stars Freddy Rodriguez, Rose McGowan, Josh Brolin, Naveen Andrews, Marley Shelton, Michael Biehn, Stacy Ferguson, Jeff Fahey, Michael Parks
