[BD Review] ‘Stitches’ Is Destined To Be A Cult Classic!!

Fantastic Films and MPI Media Group (Hatchet II, Stakeland, The Innkeepers)’s horror comedy Stitches, directed by Conor McMahon, is currently out on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD – and I certainly recommend it! So I’m taking the time to re-post Mr. Disgusting’s review to remind you of the film’s potential!

“And while the filmmakers let the good times roll, when its time to get to business, they f*cking deliver. Stitches is a relentless and brutal slasher that’s not only ultra violent, but also off-the-wall gory. But the icing in the ice cream cake is how original the death scenes are taking the genre to an entirely new level (think Killer Klownz weird).”

I loved Stitches almost as much as Mr. Disgusting (read his review). I recently sat down with the film’s writer/director Conor McMahon and one of its’ stars, Tommy Knight to talk about preserving character in a slasher full of inventive kills. We also touch on the possibility of Stitches 2.

“Years after a cruel kids’ prank during a birthday party for 8-year-old Tommy (Tommy Knight, Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures) left hired clown Richard “Stitches” Grindle (Ross Noble) dead on the kitchen floor, the childhood friends gather to plan a birthday bash to end all bashes. But they haven’t counted on the degenerate jester rising from the grave to seek vengeance on the children who mocked him and caused his grisly, untimely end. Now Tommy and his teenage friends are on the run from an undead jokester who’s ready to use every trick in the book (and many that aren’t) to exact his revenge. McMahon delivers a delirious slasher epic, a hilariously twisted and blood-soaked tale of one very bad clown with a talent for making balloon animals – but with one very hideous difference.”

He falls victim to a fatal party mishahp at the hands of a group of particularly nasty children. Years later, the group of now teenagers attend a party at which Stitches is the uninvited guest of honor, returning to avenge his untimely death.

Just last night I was excited to announce that Conor McMahon’s horror comedy Stitches was the first horror film ever to receive the “Editor’s Choice” tag here on Bloody-Disgusting (that’s history baby!). The film, while a bit cheap, is seriously going to blow your friggin’ minds. It’s such an incredibly fun slasher film with multiple re-watch potential.

In UK cinemas on October 26, we’ve now been provided with a new red band trailer that shares a taste of the blood that will be spilled by Stitches the Clown, played by comedian Ross Noble. Watch this spot for U.S. release news when it comes in.

Quietly hitting theaters in the UK is Conor McMahon’s soon-to-be cult classic Stitches, a clown slasher that features comedian Ross Noble as the title character. Completely under the radar, the slasher has the potential to be the next Hatchet, only with clowns.

Stitches is a micro-budget indie from Dark Sky Films that, while cheap, doesn’t pull any punches. It follows a clown who is accidentally murdered by a group of children. Years later, the kids all end up at the same high school party, which brings Stitches back from the grave for bloody revenge.

The pic is an old school slasher that really hones in on its ’80s roots. While a fun horror comedy, the film takes itself absolutely serious (like, let’s say, Fright Night). For example, the clown uses its nose to sniff people out, and at one point punches a kid with a Slinky-like arm, but it never apologizes for its silliness. The comedy itself isn’t slap sticky, nor is it laugh aloud funny, but it carries a “fun” tone that makes it an easy watch and a candidate for repeat viewings.

And while the filmmakers let the good times roll, when its time to get to business, they fucking deliver. Stitches is a relentless and brutal slasher that’s not only ultra violent, but also off-the-wall gory. But the icing in the ice cream cake is how original the death scenes are taking the genre to an entirely new level (think Killer Klownz weird).

Stitches is an incredibly low budget production – the film looks cheap, and the acting is suspect – but it delivers on so many other levels. Its biggest accomplishment is that it’s never boring, and carries heavy replay value. It’s a slasher that many of you guys will miss, but it could easily end up one of your favorite horror films in the past few years. If anything, you’ll learn to laugh with clowns and not at them.
