The Boxtrolls

The Boxtrolls is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs (voiced by Mr. Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Mr. Kingsley), who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie (Ms. Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.

5 Questions With James D’Arcy Of ‘Hitchcock’!

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment released Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock on Blu-ray and DVD (and iTunes) last week. To that end, I recently chatted with James D’Arcy (In Their Skin) about the weight of portraying none other than Anthony Perkins in the film.

Anthony Hopkins stars as Hitchcock, along with Helen Mirren as his wife during the making of Hitchcock’s seminal movie Psycho. Scarlett Johansson plays Janet Leigh while Jessica Biel portrays Vera Miles. Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg, Michael Wincott, Richard Portnow and Kurtwood Smith also star.

The project is based on the non-fiction book by Stephen Rebello that tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a “lowly” horror movie. No studio wanted to touch it initially, so Hitchcock scrounged for financing by himself. The movie, of course, became one of his biggest hits and one of the most influential of all time.

LAIKA Shifts Focus From ‘ParaNorman’ To ‘The Boxtrolls’

I didn’t love ParaNorman, I found it to be a gorgeous looking film with a cool concept but a snoozer of a script. But I’m very hopeful for The Boxtrolls. As long as the book it’s based on, Alan Snow‘s “Here Be Monsters”, has a reasonably compelling narrative they’re already off to a better start. And if whomever writes the script can translate that well, even better.

The studios behind ParaNorman, LAIKA and Focus, are teaming up on the new 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature directed by Anthony Stacchi (Open Season) and Graham Annable (story artist on Coraline and ParaNorman). Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan will provide their voices to the film.

Focus will hold worldwide distribution rights to The Boxtrolls while Universal Pictures International will release the movie overseas (with eOne Distribution handling Canada). It is set for release October 17th, 2014. READ MORE

[News Bites] Lo-Res ‘The Hypnotist’ Trailer, ‘Self Storage’ Imagery, And Another Look At ‘Hitchcock’

The official Facebook page for Self Storage has been updated with a few behind-the-scenes pics and the news that Eliza Robert will now star alongside Eric Roberts, Michael Berryman, Jonathan Silverman and Tommy DeNucci in the Tom DeNucci-directed horror pic. “‘Self Storage’ tells the story of Jake, the night watchman working at a highly-secured self-storage facility. His pals are home from college and looking to party. Jake decides to invite them to his work and throw a fiesta of his own. Innocent mischief turns a naughty night of sex, drugs and rock & roll into an evening of pure terror. Barbed wire fences are meant to keep people out, but these fences keep people in.

While it’s unfortunately not in English, and horribly pixelated, you can get a first look at Lasse Hallstrom’s The Hypnotist in the following international trailer. “In the novel, Detective Linna investigates a grisly triple homicide where the only survivor, a young boy, is too traumatized to testify. Linna convinces a famous psychologist, against his better judgment, to hypnotize the boy, setting off a terrifying chain of events.” Mikael Persbrandt, Lena Olin and Tobias Zilliacus all star. Watch for distro news as it comes in.

Below we’ve also added a new look at Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in Fox Searchlight’s now filming Hitchcock, which also stars Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, James D’Arcy, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Michael Wincott and Wallace Langham. Directed by Sacha Gervasi, the project is based on the non-fiction book by Stephen Rebello that tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a “lowly” horror movie (Psycho). Most of the footage makes me want to take this Friday the 13th and enjoy the original classic from Tom Holland, while there are some things that intrigue me. Mostly, I’m curious as to how well the battle between Carlie (played by Anton Yelchin) and Jerry (Colin Farrell) will play out. As for scares, I think we’re in for a slew of “jumps” as the hand to the glass indicates (blah!) Sh*t, I may just watch Distrubia again instead….
