‘State Of Decay’ Sells Over Half A Million Copies, Patch Fix Coming Soon

Today, developer Undead Labs revealed a bit of exciting news about their ambitious open-world zombie survival game State of Decay, which recently passed the half a million sold milestone on XBLA. That’s a mighty impressive number, especially so for an indie game with little marketing.

This success all but guarantees we’ll be seeing more of that mysterious follow-up project, code-named Class4, but not before they bring State of Decay to Steam and add a “pure sandbox mode” in the near future (possibly with added co-op, too).

First ‘State Of Decay’ Patch Available Now

Undead Labs’ zombie survival game State of Decay has only been out a couple weeks and it’s already broken records and received critical acclaim, including an Editor’s Choice from yours truly. It’s an incredibly addicting and often unforgiving post-apocalyptic arcade game that, unfortunately, was also riddled with technical issues. Thankfully, Undead Labs is addressing, and fixing, many of these issues in a patch. Full list of fixes after the jump.

‘State Of Decay’ Sells 250,000 Copies In First 48 Hours

Undead Labs’ post-apocalyptic XBLA title State of Decay, which released on June 5th, has already sold over a quarter of a million copies. On their blog, the developer thanked their fans, saying “This was you. We did not have an ad budget. We didn’t have a physical copy to load onto shelves, no worldwide multimedia push, no studio reputation with millions of followers. All we had was what we believed was a great game and a great community. And make no mistake, a solid game is not enough, not in 2013. Plenty of great games wither away in obscurity. This train got rolling because you got out and pushed.”

This success is well deserved, and it’s especially good news as it all-but-confirms that Undead Labs will bring us the mysterious game they hinted at back when State of Decay was known as Class3, the more ambitious follow-up title known as Class4.

‘State Of Decay’ Review: Survival Of The Fittest

The zombie genre is bustling right now. You can’t turn a corner without bumping into a Resident Evil, The Walking Dead, DayZ, Lollipop Chainsaw, ZombiU, The Last of Us, Dead Island, etc. Some might even say there are too many zombie games out there right now, that the market has, or is about to become, oversaturated with the undead.

With that said, even if all of the above is true — and it may very well be — if we keep getting games like State of Decay, I’m completely okay with it.

‘State Of Decay’ Coming June 5, According To Leaked GameStop Listing

Undead Labs’ hugely ambitious open world RPG State of Decay is one of the more exciting zombie games on the horizon. They’re really going all out with this post-apocalyptic arcade title, packing more content into it than most full retail releases.

A GameStop listing obtained by IGN could narrow reveals a June 5 release date and reveals a moderately high — for an arcade title — price tag of $20, or 1600 MSP. The developer’s community director Sanya Weathers clarified the listing in the State of Decay forums, saying June 5 is their goal, but they won’t be able to provide a solid date until the game passes certification. As for the price, I wouldn’t be all that surprised if it did cost $20, knowing how much content it offers.

A New Trailer For The Incredibly Ambitious XBLA Game ‘State Of Decay’

Undead Labs has been hard at work on a very ambitious post-apocalyptic zombie game called State of Decay. We’ve covered it before, but in case you’re familiar with the title, all you really need to know is it aims to do the zombie genre right. It has hordes of the undead, deep character customization, resource scavenging and conservation, human drama, etc. Basically, it’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a zombie game, neatly packaged in an arcade game. I’m pumped for it — if you aren’t, I suggest you watch this new trailer and let it pump you up.

‘State Of Decay’s’ Character Customization Is Deep. How Deep? This Deep.

If Undead Labs’ State of Decay isn’t on your radar by now, then you obviously haven’t been keeping up with it. It’s a game about scavenging, surviving, and bludgeoning the occasional zombie. For an arcade game this one’s more ambitious than most. The team behind it recently detailed the game’s robust character customization system, with stats that are based on what you do in the game. If you’re particularly adept with a gun, that stat will increase more quickly than the others. Learn all about it after the break.

Watch A Guy Bludgeon A Zombie To Death In This New ‘State Of Decay’ Video

With The Walking Dead, Day Z and The War Z still fresh on our minds, I would understand if you had forgotten about Undead Labs’ upcoming take on the bustling zombie genre. Coming next year is their open-world title called State of Decay (formerly Class3). The XBLA exclusive focuses more on survival, stealth, and evading the undead. Every decision you make will shape the world around you, and it will even let you build bases, which you will need to fortify and defend from the zombie hordes. In this new video, we see a guy beat the crap out of a handful of zombies that are surrounding a gas station so he can search the building for supplies. Then he calls in a few friends to come raid the place. It looks neat. See it in action after the jump.

Darksiders II Composer Jesper Kyd Is Scoring ‘State Of Decay’

All right, so I might be a little late with this news, but it would seem my new favorite video game composer Jesper Kyd is working on the score for one of the more intriguing upcoming zombie games, Undead Labs’ State of Decay. Kyd’s music has been heard in the Hitman and Assassin’s Creed series, but arguably some of his best work can be found in Darksiders II, released earlier this month. I’ve had that game’s soundtrack on repeat for the last week, and it looks like I’ll be doing the same for State of Decay. While we’re on the subject, what’s your favorite video game soundtrack or composer?

From This Day Onward, Class3 Will Be Known As ‘State Of Decay’

The intriguing open-world zombie game that’s been in development by Undead Labs has finally moved past its code name of “Class3.” Now, you can refer to it as State of Decay. I like that. It’s about as catchy as a renegade zombie virus. We had the opportunity to interview Undead Labs’ producer Emily Diehl last year about the game, which has been in development for some time now. It’s essentially what many of us hardcore zombie fans have been asking for: a realistic zombie survival game set in a big open world where you can fortify your home base, scavenge for food and ammunition, and rescue other survivors to strengthen your group. Head past the break for more info, including a slick new trailer.

We Get the Scoop On the Zombie Title Class3 in Our Interview with Undead Labs’ Emily Diehl

Last month we reported on an incredibly exciting idea: an open world zombie-survival game called Class3 where your goal is to survive in a world overrun by the undead. Reinforcing your base, saving fellow survivors and maintaining a strong supply of the necessities (like food and water) are necessary for survival. But what’s even more exciting than that is how your choices play an important role in the game.

6 We Get the Scoop On the Zombie Title Class3 in Our Interview with Undead Labs Emily Diehl

I recently had the opportunity to ask Undead Labs’ producer Emily Diehl a few questions regarding the hugely ambitious project. We talk about the combat, what types of zombies we’ll come across and when we can expect the game to release. Head past the break to get in the know about this upcoming game, exclusive to the Xbox Live Arcade. READ MORE
