Tortured Souls

Based on the Todd McFarlane Toys line, the story centers on a man who decides he wants to be rid of his wife in favor of a more interesting life. The man “exchanges” his wife for a demon goddess from another world, throwing her into a shadowy world of monsters – one from which she must escape and return to his everyday world to rescue their child and vanquish the demon.

Full Length Trailer For ‘Riddick’ Antes Up On Creatures, Bounty Hunters And… Brightness! New Poster Added!

David Twohy and Vin Diesel have reunited for Riddick, the third film in the Pitch Black franchise, and we finally get the first full length trailer (via Machinima) after a brief tease two months ago! I imagine this will be attached to Fast & Furious 6, whose existence Diesel likely used as a bargaining chip to get this film made.

Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

Right now it looks like this movie has the violence and scale of Pitch Black, but with the CG and bright lighting of Chronicles. We’ve also got some stills and a new poster below! READ MORE

‘R.I.P.D.’ Screenwriters Open Up About The Film’s Epic Shoot And New Ending

Universal Pictures’ R.I.P.D. is aiming for a July 19th release and it has been a long time coming. The film seemingly shot forever and, according to screenwriters Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, it was all in service of making this Dark Horse adaptation a bigger experience for the fans.

The pair explained the added scenes to Collider with Manfredi elaborating, “A lot of the core scenes from our early drafts are still there. They’ve remained through every version of the script. I think where it changed a little bit from the first draft to the last draft is that it just got bigger and bigger in scope. And so, the finale was a smaller set piece in our first draft and it developed. We were in a meeting recently, and we were like, “do you remember when this ended on a farm, like Witness?”

Hay adds, “…But in the movie, it’s a lot of two guys driving around in a car together and driving each other insane. That’s what this movie is and what’s it’s always been. I think that Jeff and Ryan do incredibly well together.

Robert Schwentke directs the film starring Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Stephanie Szostak, Mary-Louise Parker, Marisa Miller, Mike O’Malley, James Hong, Robert Knepper and Tobias Segal.

‘R.I.P.D.’ Poster Emphasizes Stars Over Fun

Universal Pictures’ R.I.P.D. is aiming for a July 19th release and has started their hype machine. While I’m actually hearing good things about the footage out of Cinemacon – and that we’ll be able to see a trailer this week, I’m sort of disappointed in this poster. It’s just so grey and bland. Jeff Bridges awesome mustache still stands out though.

Robert Schwentke directs the Dark Horse Comics adaptation in which a recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him. Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Stephanie Szostak, Mary-Louise Parker, Marisa Miller, Mike O’Malley, James Hong, Robert Knepper and Tobias Segal star.

‘Dracula Year Zero’ Actually Getting Made With Luke Evans Starring, But Now It’s Just ‘Dracula’

Update: Apparently now it’s just called Dracula.

The last time we wrote about Universal Pictures’ Dracula (aka Dracula Year Zero) was well voer a year ago when commercial helmer Gary Shore was in negotiations to direct the film. He’s still onboard (remarkable, actually – for a film in this kind if development) and now the movie has a lead in Luke Evans (The Raven), per THR. Even bigger news? The film has a green light and the project will start shooting this year!

New Trailer For ‘The Purge’ Is Super Intense!! The Poster Isn’t Half Bad Either!

Writer/Director James DeMonaco’s Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes-produced The Purge (formerly Vigilandia) – came out swinging today with a new trailer, poster, some cool stills and a new synopsis! Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane, Edwin Hodge, Tony Oller and Rhys Wakefield star in the film. I definitely like the intensity and the “what if The Strangers were legal” vibe!

In an America wracked by crime, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity—including murder—is legal. The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It is one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking.

Directed by James DeMonaco (writer of Assault on Precinct 13 and The Negotiator), The Purge is produced by Jason Blum of Blumhouse (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister), Platinum Dunes’ partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), as well as Sébastien Kurt Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13).

The Purge hits May 31st, 2013. Head inside for the trailer, poster and image gallery! READ MORE

‘The World’s End’ Will Hit Two Months Sooner! Gather Your Money!

I couldn’t be more excited for The World’s End, Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright’s new movie starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan. From its’ Stephen King-like premise to the cast to the fact that Wright has never let me down. And now, it’s hitting a full two months earlier with a new release date of August 23rd (up from October 25th).

In the film, “20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

Yes, August 23rd is also the same weekend You’re Next comes out. Please save your money and see both films folks, you won’t regret it (at least I doubt you’ll regret it with World’s End – since I haven’t seen it yet).

‘Jurassic Park 4′ Finds A Director! It’s Not A “Safe” Choice!

Because, you know, your safety isn’t guaranteed when you go to… never mind. In a fairly surprising bit of news, it’s being reported that Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) has been hired to direct Jurassic Park IV for Universal Pictures. Per Deadline, “He met with the studio and filmmakers, and they felt he was a good match for the material, having grown up a huge fan of the trilogy and part of a new generation of directors steeped in all things dinosaur. They felt he would preserve and protect the characters in the story they created.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are penning the fourth installment with a targeted June 13, 2014 release planned. Unconfirmed storyline details report that the the film could be about the government who has trained dinosaurs to carry weapons and use them for battle purposes.

I’m actually ok with this. I’m sure a lot of the big effects sequences are being pre-visualized already and if this is like any other movie Trevorrow will probably have a 2nd unit director shoot most of the action anyway. So maybe we’ll get some nice characters this time around?

What do you think? Have you seen Safety Not Guaranteed?

Megadeth Will Bring You ‘Super Collider’ In June

Metal legends Megadeth have unveiled Super Collider as the title of their 14th studio album. They have also announced that the album will be released in June and will be distributed by Universal Records. This comes after Megadeth’s split with Roadrunner Records, which was amicable.

Mustaine states, “It was a real thrill for us to learn there was an opportunity to join Universal. It seems like every time you see a great band or music video, it comes from a Universal label … Being with Universal is by far the most exciting and prestigious home for Megadeth ever! We are electrified with what the future holds and the possibilities such a powerhouse like Universal will bring for us all.

We have worked with some great people over the years, and it is amazing to see so many of them on the Universal team for our new record, Super Collider. If Megadeth being here isn’t satiating enough, having Tradecraft as my own label is going to be really amazing for metal bands around the world.

Len Wiseman Is Now Directing ‘The Mummy’ Remake…

Back in May we reported that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (co-writers of Transformers, Star Trek, Cowboys And Aliens) and their K/O Paper Products banner had kicked off a new producing relationship with Universal by reimagining titles from the studio’s library, one of which is the and The Mummy remake (the other film in the deal is Van Helsing with Tom Cruise. Paper Products was set to develop and produce a modern re-imagining of the project alongside producer Sean Daniel. Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour, draft one of Prometheus) will be writing the script.

And now this project has a director… Len Wiseman (Underworld, the Total Recall remake). Per Deadline, “Universal Pictures is setting Len Wiseman to direct The Mummy, the reboot of a franchise whose most recent incarnation grossed $1.25 billion over three films. Jon Spaihts is writing the script and the studio is eyeing a potential summer 2014 release, so things are moving quickly, with Universal eager to ramp back up one of its most venerable franchises.

Presented without comment is this quote from Kurtzman. “A lot of the work with Len has been about creating mythology, and I remember seeing Underworld and finding it a beautiful advancement of the genre. It was presented in this fresh, incredibly cool concept, but it never gave up its reverence for the mythology and that is what inspired us to meet with Len.

So. There it is. Not really excited about this, but wasn’t too excited before either.

Universal Remaking ‘The Mummy’ With One Of The Writers Of ‘Prometheus’

MummyLand40412 Universal Remaking The Mummy With One Of The Writers Of Prometheus

Universal Pictures is officially rebooting one of their most treasured franchises, The Mummy. Of course, the lineage of pics that Stephen Sommers kicked off in 1999 was itself just the latest reboot of the material (even though that was long before the term “reboot” was coined). This latest version will still be produced by Sean Daniel and (at least this initial draft) will be written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, The Darkest Hour).

Per Variety, “Universal Pictures has tapped “Prometheus” scribe Jon Spaihts to pen a reboot of “The Mummy” franchise, which Sean Daniel will return to produce. Stephen Sommers’ 1999 take on “The Mummy,” which starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, grossed $415 million worldwide. A 2004 sequel grossed $433 worldwide and Rob Cohen’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” took in $401 million worldwide, indicating there’s still plenty of interest in the franchise.

For what it’s worth, Spaihts seems to have the right intentions, “I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before.

What direction would you guys like to see the material go in? READ MORE

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo Leaves Rapture, No Longer Directing ‘Bioshock’

BioshockLand32312 Juan Carlos Fresnadillo Leaves Rapture, No Longer Directing Bioshock

For my money, “Bioshock” is the best that the modern gaming era has to offer. Even though its sequel was incredibly disappointing, I can’t wait for “Bioshock Infinite”, primarily because it marks the return of Ken Levine to the franchise. One thing we may never be getting is the Bioshock movie. And to be honest, I’m increasingly fine with that. The first game is so perfect that I’m beginning to believe that a film depiction of that world could only disappoint.

When the initial incarnation of the Bioshock film was announced at Universal with Gore Verbinski at the helm, I was incredibly excited. Verbinski is nothing if not an incredibly talented visual stylist. But the Hard-R rating it would require combined with the fact that it would cost hundreds of millions to produce wound up stalling the project for so long that Verbinski stepped aside as a director (though he remains a producer) and they hired Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. The aim at the time was also very much on a more cost-friendly adaptation of the game. But that incarnation seems to have bitten the dust as well.

Fresnadillo told The Playlist, “To be honest, by now, I’m completely out of that, and developing other stuff. Right now it’s on hold. The studio and the videogame company, they have to reach some kind of agreement about the budget and the rating.

Per the usual, Ken Levine isn’t in any hurry either. Last year he stated, “We got very close to having it get made – we had a deal in place and a director. But for us there’s no burning [desire] to have a movie made just to get it made,” Levine stressed. “For us and for Take-Two, it’s really got to be something that will a) give the fans something that they want, and b) for those who don’t know ‘Bioshock,’ really introduce them to something that is consistent with the game, and is it going to be a good representation of the game.

What do you think? Do you want the “Bioshock” movie to happen or are you content with the games? READ MORE
