Review: It Ends Here ‘Valen the Outcast’ #8

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately, the same applies to Valen the Outcast. The folks at Boom! deliver a non-stop, action-packed thrill ride in this 8th, and final installment of the Valen Brands’ undead journey to retrieve is soul. It’s not often that one empathizes with an undead monster but Valen is something special. While the conclusion is a bit dry, I wish there were more books like “Valen” on the market. READ MORE

Another solid title from BOOM! Studios comes to an end this week as Valen’s journey to recover his soul comes to a promising conclusion. Michael Alan Nelson has done a commendable job creating an engaging dark fantasy story with zombies and necromancers. I know our reviewer, GreenBasterd, will be in tears when he turns the last page. Check the lengthy preview after the break for “Valen The Outcast” #8. READ MORE

Valen The Outcast has been the best surprise of the year so far. When the series began, none of here at BD did thought it possible for it to be at the top of our reading list every month, yet here it is. It’s an original, funny, dark, and daring take on the horror fantasy genre and Nelson and Scalera are owning it. READ MORE

Review: ‘Valen The Outcast’ #6

It may seem odd to say that a line from Forgetting Sarah Marshall partially sums up BOOM! Studio’s sixth issue of Valen the Outcast, but it does. The line (delivered by the awkward virgin on his honeymoon for those of you in the know) is, “When they mix the sexuality and the violence, I like it”. By the second page of “Valen” #6, you’ll understand what I mean. If you remember the cliffhanger ending of issue #5, Valen, Zjanna and Cordavan were fleeing from a “skulk.” If you’re like me and you didn’t know what a skulk is, I will edify you: skulk – n. a group of foxes. Kind of like a gaggle of geese, except in Valen’s case the foxes are scantily clad, highly tattooed, smokin’ hot, ninja assassins! READ MORE

In the latest issue, Valen and his companions continue on their epic journey for an undead king’s soul, tightening the straps on the reader for a fast paced thrill ride that only Michael Alan Nelson can provide. BOOM! Studios has something amazing on their hands. READ MORE

Review: Valen The Outcast #2

Necromancers are pretty badass. I can safely say i’ve always had a soft spot for them, especially since my days of attempting to get one to level 80 in Diablo 2, and reading the Magic the Gathering novels that featured Volrath. Yes, I was that kind of kid. Recently, however, there haven’t been any necromancers that I’ve been obsessed with, but that quickly changed after reading the first two issues of Boom! Studio’s new series, Valen the Outcast. Read on for the skinny….
