NBC’s upcoming “Dracula” has unveiled several looks at the show (via EW) all of whom feature Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the titular character. Looks alright I guess in the sense that it looks like a high budget TV show. We’ll know more soon, I hope!
The series, which bypassed the traditional pilot stage, takes place in the 1890s and finds Dracula (“The Tudors’” Jonathan Rhys Meyers) living a double life in London as an American businessman interested in bringing modern science to Victorian society. But his true plan — to exact revenge on those who burdened him centuries ago — is derailed when he falls in love with Mina (“Arrow”‘s Jessica DeGouw), who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife. Van Helsing (Thomas Kretschmann) is a brilliant professor obsessed with revenge and power. He may be a greater threat to the public than the titular count. Katie McGrath and Nonso Anozie also star.
“Dracula,” a co-production from British Sky Broadcasting, Carnival Films & Television, Flame Ventures and NBCUniversal, hails from Tony Krantz (“24,” “Sports Night”) and former HBO Films president Colin Callender and writer-creator Cole Haddon (who will co-exec produce).
NBC plans to air Dracula in the fall of 2013. Head inside for the pics! READ MORE
MercurySteam’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, released in 2010, played like no Castlevania game that came before it, yet it still felt like it took place in the same universe. The series’ flagship European castles, dark and moody forests, and supernatural creatures worked better than expected when mixed with God of War-esque combo-driven combat, larger-than-life set pieces, and light RPG elements, a noticeable departure from its NES and SNES ancestors and Metroidvania counterparts.

The house of Final Fantasy recently registered the domains BloodMasque.com and BloodMasque.net for what sounds like it could be a new horror or possibly vampire themed IP. The rumor’s been abuzz with speculation and so far Square Enix has been mum on the situation, leaving us to imagine the greatest of possibilities. I’d personally like to see a really good vampire game, because we don’t have enough of those. Really, I’ll be happy so long as it has nothing to do with zombies. What about you, what do you think this could be?

Neil Jordan’s Byzantium, a vampire film starring Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley and Saoirse Ronan premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this week and IFC has made it their first official pick-up fo the fest, paying something close to $2M for the rights.
Per THR, “Sources say it was IFC’s $2 million offer that drew blood.Heading into Toronto, ‘Byzantium’ was on every buyer’s list, both small and large. However, bigger distributors passed on the film, which is receiving mixed reviews. Also, no one was sure how commerical Byzantium would be, considering Jordan’s arthouse pedigree.”
In the film, “Two mysterious women seek refuge in a run-down coastal resort. Clara meets lonely Noel, who provides shelter in his deserted guesthouse, Byzantium. Schoolgirl Eleanor befriends Frank and tells him their lethal secret. They were born 200 years ago and survive on human blood. As knowledge of their secret spreads, their past catches up on them with deathly consequence.”

Neil Jordan’s Byzantium, starring Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley and Saoirse Ronan plays the Toronto International Film Festival this week. And now we have a new clip from the film which looks pretty creepy to me.

Bloody-Disgusting has teamed up with West Virginian hard rock act Bobaflex to bring you the exclusive premiere of their music video for “Vampire”. The song comes from their 2011 album Hell In My Heart (iTunes). The video was recorded during the band’s July 20th, 2012 performance at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, OH and was directed by Matt Phillips. You can watch the video below.
Vocalist/guitarist Marty McCoy explains, “This song is a hard hitting, live rocker about a chick that used to torment me, but the sex was so amazing that I gladly received the punishment.”
The band is currently on tour and all dates can be seen below. READ MORE
Some of the best vampire movies don’t stick to the classic fangs and widow’s peak clichés we’ve become accustomed to. Hell, Near Dark never even uses the word ‘vampire’ once in the movie and it’s still an incredible film. Midnight Son, written and directed by Scott Leberecht, follows the same lead in a Martin-esque style, telling the story of a young man coming to terms with bodily changes he’s experiencing. Changes that could be building to his full transformation into a vampire. READ MORE
I haven’t seen the original, but the remake of Embrace Of The Vampire seems to definitely be coming entirely from the cash money perspective. Though some are mourning the loss of original star Alyssa Milano, I say we just acknowledge the existence of this and move on with our day. Maybe her replacement Sharon Hinnendael is up to the task of filling those shoes!
Per Variety, “Alan Mruvka’s Filmology Labs Entertainment is teaming with Grobman-Campbell Films to produce a remake of ‘Embrace of the Vampire,’ the 1994 cult pic starring Alyssa Milano that was produced by Mruvka. Erotic thriller is being financed by Lisa Hansen and Paul Herzberg of Cinetel Films along with Anchor Bay Entertainment, which is a division of Starz Media. Like a supernatural “Fifty Shades of Grey,” story follows a virginal college student who is introduced to a dark world of carnal desires after being seduced by a handsome vampire.”
It’s pretty telling that the “50 Shades Of Grey” phenomenon has been mentioned in conjunction with this “erotic thriller.” “There’s been a lot of interest lately to do a remake,” said Mruvka. I imagine so! Embrace Of The Vampire has already started production in Vancouver.
A short time ago we ANNOUNCED DARK, a stealth game where you play as the vampire. Past the break you can check out a teaser trailer for the game. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for some gameplay. PC, and Xbox 360. No release date yet.
Good news! Writer/director Antonio Trashorras’ vampire film Blind Alley will now be headed to the U.S. on VOD in the next few months.
Per Variety, “Phase 4 Films has picked up U.S. distribution rights to horror film “Blind Alley,” the directorial debut of Spanish screenwriter Antonio Trashorras. Pic will bow on VOD on Phase 4′s World Premieres platform by the fall.”
In the film (which stars Ana de Armas, Diego Cadavid and Leonor Varela), “In a tiny laundrette hidden down an alleyway, Rosa finds herself trapped, completely isolated and unable to escape the nightmarish situation of being attacked by a serial killer. At the break of dawn and after hours of anguish, immersed in the sadistic game of rat and mouse the killer has subjected her to, the young girl will discover something even more disturbing about the nature of her aggressor.” READ MORE
Midnight Son is headed to DVD this coming July 17th from Image Entertainment. The film, directed by Scott Leberecht, seems to be taking the vampire mythology into a universe somewhat more grounded by science (or pseudo-science). Could be interesting!
The film is about “Jacob (Zak Kilberg), a young man with a rare skin disorder that forces him to avoid exposure to the sun…confining him to a life of seclusion and shadow. As his symptoms worsen, Jacob’s mental and physical health begin to crumble, forcing him to cross a barrier that few would consider: drinking human blood.
When Jacob meets Mary (Maya Parish), who is as lonely and damaged as himself, he falls in love. But hope is countered by his increasingly violent tendencies, and the local law enforcement, which is now focusing on him as a prime suspect in a series of grisly murders.“

“True Blood” is set to return on Sunday, June 10 at 9/8c. The show’s fifth season will contain 12 episodes and will be the last season of the program to be overseen by show runner Alan Ball. Which I guess means they can throw all logic out the window after that and go totally nuts, right? The show has been so conservative, chaste and predictable while maintaining the upmost adherence to narrative cohesion. I hope they finally get some sex, nudity and blood in the mix.
“Mixing romance, suspense, mystery, and humor, the Emmy-nominated show takes place at a time when vampires have come out of the coffin and follows the on-and-off romance between waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Moyer).”

Dietrich Johnston’s Blood Shot has been a long time coming. BD first visited the set of the film back in February of 2008, but sometimes things move slower than you’d like in the indie world. But now, the film has a pretty cool poster that plays up to it’s terrorism fighting vampire promises.
“Assigned by a covert government agency, a mysterious vampire and a rogue cop reluctantly join forces against a brutal maniac and his legion of killers. Christopher Lambert (‘Highlander’), Lance Henriksen (‘Aliens’, ‘The Terminator’) and Oscar nominee Brad Dourif (‘The Lord of the Rings’) star alongside Michael Bailey Smith (“The Hills Have Eyes”) and Brennan Elliott (‘The 4400′) in this killer, action-packed blend of ‘Blade’ and ‘Die Hard’!”

Alan Ball is stepping down as the head writer of “True Blood”.
I’m not entirely sure how much this will impact the upcoming 5th Season of HBO’s flagship sex and vampires odyssey. I do know that the show resumed production in November, so I have to assume that the majority of the upcoming season is pretty much mapped out. The show’s luxurious (around 14 days per episode) production schedule would allow for around 7 or so segments to be in the can. So it’s safe to say that the remaining 5 are outlined at the very least and the majority of them are scripted.
Not much reason has been given for Ball’s departure from the position (he will remain on the show in some capacity, I’m guessing as a producer) except for “exhaustion”. While that’s often PR code-speak for too much hard partying – but I don’t really think that’s the case here. Perhaps Ball is literally exhausted by pushing the show to ridiculous extremes? I don’t imagine he envisioned it being as patently ridiculous as it’s become when he was first getting it off the ground in 2007-2008.
Per Forbes, “Sookie and her pals from HBO’s True Blood are losing their creator. Alan Ball, I have confirmed, will step down from being headwriter of the show about sexy vampires mixing it up in New Orleans. Explanations include exhaustion, and maybe that the show seemed like it had tired blood last season. Ball will still be with the show, I’m told, but a new regime will guide the fates of the characters into their new season. This could also very well be a money issue, as series tend to get more and more expensive as they drag on.” READ MORE
Following in InFamous 2′s footsteps is Saints Row: The Third, which will be introducing vampires into the already whacky mix with the game’s third DLC offering. The DLC, due next week, doesn’t look to pack anywhere near as much content as Festival of Blood did, but I’m more than ready to add draining the blood of innocents to my busy Steelport agenda, right between beating the elderly with my big purple dildo bat and streaking passed elementary schools.

In case you haven’t checked it out yet, Saints Row: The Third is pretty incredible, so long as you’re the type of gamer who likes guns, gangs, zombies, deadly Japanese game shows, over-the-top action, explosions, co-op, and just plain fun. Head past the break for more info, and the DLC’s trailer. READ MORE

I liked “Flight Of The Conchords” and I’ve forgiven Jermaine Clement for Gentleman Broncos so I could see this kind of working out. For me, at least. Though I have yet to check out Taika Waititi‘s Eagle Vs. Shark. Is it a disaster? Let me know.
Clement and Waititi are planning a vampire comedy. Right as vampires are finally about to get popular, right? They know, they know. Per Indiewire, “[Waititi is] working with Clement on a project on which they’ve toiled for six years. Of course, it’s a vampire film. ‘We really thought, oh, you know, no one’s doing vampire movies!’ Waititi half-joked. ‘It’s taken so long that vampires are now very uncool,’ he says about the film, which he would only share would be a comedy. ‘But we’re hoping to get a chance to make it.’”
I guess we’ll chalk this one up to a “maybe” for right now. READ MORE
The surprisingly fun Angel & Faith continues next week with issue #5 and the teen melo-vamp-drama can only go up from here. Perhaps when the series began a few months back, readers had their doubts as to whether an Angel and Faith comic would really satisfy anyone. It’s clear now that this series is better than anyone could have imagined. It’s fun, it’s whimsical, and it includes vampires without trying to be “the next big thing”. Any fan of Angel or Buffy will dig this book. Check the preview after the jump.
An official website has been launched for Rupesh Paul’s Saint Dracula, what they’re calling the first ever 3-D Dracula movie. The website shares the first images and below trailer from the latest incarnation of BRam Stoker’s creation that stars Mitch Powell, Patricia Duarte, Daniel Shayler and Bill Hutchens.
“Longing for vengeance, he waited in hunger and thirst for his long lost admirer. The night hid him in the dark, the earth and the woods were his haven. He is a fallen angel, a catastrophic lover, the trodden Prince of Wallachia, but a vampire in revenge. His partisans await his reprise with a celebration. He turns lucky in love, if not for ever. Beautiful nights of love and lust entangle him with his lost love-Clara, a passionate young nun but still a mortal. The peaches and perfection takes a turn the day Clara gets spellbound by the Catholic Church. The Vatican plots the trap but will the plan thrive? Or will it be love?” READ MORE

Man, Depp is lathering on the sunscreen here (as he should, skin cancer is no joke) in these Dark Shadows pics.
Depp is once again teaming with Tim Burton for the film. Also in the cast are Jackie Earle Haley, Bella Heathcote, Cloe Moretz, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Jonny Lee Miller, Thomas McDonell and Gulliver McGrath.
Synopsis? Hear ya go – “In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet–or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.
Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.”
Like I warned yesterday in my R.I.P.D. piece, set pics aren’t always indicative of how something will turn out. The film is in theaters May 11, 1012.
