New Gameplay From Vampire Game ‘Dark’ Leaves Me Worried

Dark is our chance to get a good vampire game. Though vampires seem to be taking over tv and movies, we haven’t seen much of an influx in the video game world. Which is a shame because if the right company starts putting the effort towards a game the genre could become as big as zombies have. What does make me nervous about Dark is that it looks like it might focus too heavily on stealth. It makes sense because vampires are usually pretty stealthy. However, it could also hurt the game if it becomes repetitive and boring. I’ll let you make that decision. Head past the break to check out the latest game play video and game features.

Review: ‘Ex Sanguine’ #5

The best vampire love story on the market comes to an intense conclusion in the final chapter of the five part story arc of Tim Seeley’s Ex Sanguine. This story is flirted with a new type of vampire mythology and loaded with themes of forbidden love. Though this may seem a tad similar so many garbage pop culture vampire stories, it is anything but. It takes a lot of guts and creativity on Tim Seeley’s part to take a very taboo topic and make it into something that reflects well on the horror genre. READ MORE

[BD Review] ‘The Thompsons’ is a Pleasant Surprise

Reviewed by Michael Erb

With a tagline like “Twilight Meets Tarantino”, it’s okay for your first impression of The Thompsons to be less than charmed. Luckily, the film is nowhere close to that description and is all the better for it.

The movie starts with the Hamilton family, now going by the surname of Thompson, scattered across Europe. They’re hiding from law enforcement after a very public bloodbath in the States makes international news and gravely wounds their youngest brother. Francis Thompson, finally coming to terms with the monster he is, has taken point searching the English countryside for vamps like them. What he finds is another family just like his; the Stuarts. [TV] Meet “True Blood’s” New King Of Louisiana!

“True Blood” has crowned the new king of Louisiana.

Arliss Howard (“Rubicon,” “Medium”), pictured, is joining the HBO drama’s forthcoming sixth season in the series regular role of Louisiana Governor Creighton Burrell, TVLine has learned.

The character is described as a good ol’ boy politician who has a major beef with vampires ever since his wife ran off with one, leaving him as a single father to their only daughter. Politically savvy and perhaps overly ambitious, Creighton tends to let his personal aspirations overshadow his humanity.

Howard’s other credits include the films Full Metal Jacket, Ruby, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Moneyball.

“True Blood‘s” sixth season is slated to premiere in June.

[TV] “True Blood” Casting News Begins Already

British actor Rob Kazinsky has joined the cast of HBO‘s vampire drama “True Blood” as new regular for the upcoming sixth season, reports Deadline.

He will play Ben, a highly charismatic faerie who takes a liking to Sookie (and vice-versa) and helps Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Jason (Ryan Kwanten) delve deeper into the mystery of their parents’ murders. Kazinsky will next be seen in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.

In the HBO series that jumped the shark, “Local waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), however, knows how it feels to be an outcast. “Cursed” with the ability to listen in on people’s thoughts, she’s also open-minded about the integration of vampires – particularly when it comes to Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old living up the road. But as Sookie is drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding Bill’s arrival in Bon Temps, that tolerance will be put to the test.

[BD Review] ‘Female Vampire’ Kind Of… Bites

Reviewed by Patrick Cooper

The folks at Kino and Redemption Films have been showing the maestro of soft-core sleaze Jess Franco some love on Blu-ray lately. They released a humble disc of his 1975 sadomasochist horror film Exorcism with no features besides the alternate cut (Demoniac). For his 1973 film Female Vampire, they’ve included some special features as well as the less-explicit alternate cut. It’s a nice package for his fans, but the film itself suffers from the drawbacks of nearly every Franco film.

The filmmaker’s muse and late wife Lina Romay stars as the Countess Irina Karlstein, a mute woman who lives with her family’s curse of having to drink bodily fluids to survive. Not blood, cum. Both male and female. She feeds by going down on her victims and once they orgasm she drains them of their fluids and they die. It’s not explained how this kills them, but this isn’t the type of film to sweat over details.

The Countess returns to her ancestral home on the Portuguese island of Madeira, making the locals wary and the men horny. There she lurks around all sexy like, usually with just a cape and boots on, engaging in sexual relations with men and women alike. She finishes them off in more ways than one, if ya catch my drift. She even has a dopey assistant who lures victims to her home. That’s really about it as far as the story goes. There is a weak sub-plot thrown in concerning a writer (Jack Taylor) who falls in love with the Countess, but that flaccid emotional story quickly finds its boner and devolves into a round of deadly oral sex.

The erotic scenes in Female Vampire are excruciatingly long and make up about the first hour of this 100-minute movie. There’s one solo scene with Lina where she’s writhing around on a bed for something like seven minutes. This is after she performs fellatio on the bedpost. Franco films these scenes very clumsily. He erratically zooms-in on crotches and butts like he just hit puberty. As sexy as Lina is, these scenes are nothing but tedious.

Luckily Redemption has included the 70-minute cut of the film, titled Erotikill. This version cuts out much of the sex in exchange for more violence. This version also seems to imply that Countess Karlstein feeds on blood like a normal ass vampire.

For Franco fetishists, this disc is a must-have. It’s a well-made package with some brief, but well-produced features. For those unfamiliar with Franco, you might want to check this out via your preferred method of rental.

A/V

Redemption Films presents Female Vampire in 1080p from a print containing an abundance of scratches, specks, and sporadic brightness fluctuations. No digital tampering has been done, which honestly may have weakened the film’s foggy, natural look. There are audio tracks in English and French, both in lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. The English dubbing sounds silly, so I recommend watching it in French with English subtitles.

Special Features

Erotikill – a 70-minute, less explicit cut of the film.

Destiny in Soft Focus: Jess Franco Remembers Female Vampire (13:00) – Franco reminisces on the film and his relationship with Lina.

Words for Lina (13:00) – a nice tribute by co-star Jean-Pierre Bouyxou. He tells some anecdotes about Lina, always stressing how great her sense of humor was. He calls her a “guttersnipe.”

Trailers for Franco’s Exorcism, The Nude Vampire, The Rape of the Vampire, Female Vampire, and Requiem for a Vampire.

‘Van Helsing’ Hunts ‘Snow White’ Director For Remake

Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders is said to be circling Universal Pictures second attempt at Van Helsing, reports Twitch. The sides have “engaged in some early and still relatively casual conversations about Universal’s upcoming Van Helsing with the sides expressing a mutual interest in doing the project with one another,” says the site.

Uni recently announced a two-year first-look production deal with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and their K/O Paper Products banner. The duo will kick off their new relationship with Universal by reimagining titles from the studio’s library including Van Helsing and The Mummy remake, to be helmed by Len Wiseman.

Tom Cruise attached to star in and produce the new Helsing.

The titular character was inspired by the Dutch vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing from Irish author Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula.”

[TV] Rutger Hauer Spooks Bon Temps In “True Blood’s” Season 6

“True Blood” has made its first major Season 6 hire, with vet Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Hobo with a Shotgun) joining the HBO smash as a series regular, TVLine reports.

Hauer will play Macklyn, a mysterious and sinister figure with deep ties to Sookie and Jason.

Hauer is well known for his portrayal of Blade Runner‘s Roy Batty, a renegade robot trying to evade capture in Ridley Scott’s classic sci-fi film. But the Dutch actor has a varied resume that includes parts in movies like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Batman Begins and Sin City and guest roles in TV’s “Smallville” and “Alias”.

True Blood’s sixth season is slated to premiere in June 2013.

Review: ‘I, Vampire Vol.1: Tainted Love’

Readers will be thirsting for more after they get their hands on I, Vampire Vol. 1: Tainted Love. Whether Joshua Hale Fialkov writes a romantically dramatic or action-packed scene, Andrea Sorrentino’s illustrations are always excellently rendered to compliment the story. Though I have not read any of the original “I, Vampire” issues, there is such an appreciation to the source material from J.M. DeMatteis and Tim Sutton that comes right off the pages. The clever writing and darkly captivating artwork make ‘I, Vampire’ one of the hidden gems of DC’s New 52. This is a vampire comic that ranks up there with the best of them. READ MORE

TV: Awww! Watch Alan Ball Say Goodbye To “True Blood”!!

HBO just aired the last episode of “True Blood”‘s Fifth Season, “Save Yourself”, last night. Not only did it mark the last episode of the season, it marked creator Alan Ball’s last episode as the series’ showrunner. Now we have a video (which apparently aired before last night’s episode) of his goodbye to the show.

Listen, I’ve been fairly vocal about the fact that I’m not a huge “True Blood” fan. I was okay with parts of the first season along with parts of the second. I liked what I saw of this season (I think I saw 4 episodes this year) more than whatever was happening with the show last year but ultimately couldn’t bring myself to like it as much as some of you guys do. It’s just not my thing.

That being said – respect. Ball really did create something special here. As much as it’s just not for me – it resonates with a huge amount of people and there’s something to be said for that. It’s a tricky thing to pull off for one year, let alone five. And Ball’s prior show, Six Feet Under, is one of my all time favorite programs – so I know I’ll at least be tuning in to check out whatever he does next. I’m legitimately excited to see what he comes up with next.

Godspeed, Alan Ball. At least you gave me Jessica. Head inside for the video. READ MORE
