TV: Awww! Watch Alan Ball Say Goodbye To “True Blood”!!

HBO just aired the last episode of “True Blood”‘s Fifth Season, “Save Yourself”, last night. Not only did it mark the last episode of the season, it marked creator Alan Ball’s last episode as the series’ showrunner. Now we have a video (which apparently aired before last night’s episode) of his goodbye to the show.

Listen, I’ve been fairly vocal about the fact that I’m not a huge “True Blood” fan. I was okay with parts of the first season along with parts of the second. I liked what I saw of this season (I think I saw 4 episodes this year) more than whatever was happening with the show last year but ultimately couldn’t bring myself to like it as much as some of you guys do. It’s just not my thing.

That being said – respect. Ball really did create something special here. As much as it’s just not for me – it resonates with a huge amount of people and there’s something to be said for that. It’s a tricky thing to pull off for one year, let alone five. And Ball’s prior show, Six Feet Under, is one of my all time favorite programs – so I know I’ll at least be tuning in to check out whatever he does next. I’m legitimately excited to see what he comes up with next.

Godspeed, Alan Ball. At least you gave me Jessica. Head inside for the video. READ MORE

TV: [Next On] “True Blood” Preview Clips Prove Why Show Continues To Suck (Pun Intended)

Last August I literally lost my sh*t in regards to HBO’s “True Blood.” I watched my favorite show on cable transcend into madness as it made all of the same mistakes as the abomination known as “Heroes.” HBO has learned nothing, absolutely nothing.

The cabler has released a pair of clips for “True Blood” Episode 59 “Sunset”, which literally made my stomach turn. First, Jason Stackhouse almost turned into a wolf, now they’re taunting viewers with the notion that he may become a vampire? By the time the show ends every single person in Bontemp will be “undead” or a creature of the night. That’s boring. Not to mentioned nearly every character has made a heel turn at least once. Boring.

With two episodes left, HBO shared the plot for Season 5′s Episode 11 ‘Sunset’ (Episode #59): “Sookie probes an ancient family secret with help from a faerie elder; Jessica is an unwilling participant in Bill’s ongoing religious conversion; Alcide reconnects with his father; the military uses a video of Russell and Steve Newlin as ammunition; Sam and Luna hitch a ride into the Authority.” Air Date: Aug 19, 2012 Guest Cast Robert Patrick: Jackson Herveaux Joe Manganiello: Alcide Herveaux Valentina Cervi: Salome Lucy Griffiths: Nora Kristina Anapau: Maurella

TV: [Next On] The Year’s Second To Last Episode Of “True Blood”…”Sunset”

After airing “Gone, Gone, Gone” (episode #58 of “True Blood”‘s fifth season) tonight, HBO looks forward to the final two episodes of the season, the first of which airs next week. Episode #59 airs on August 19th and is called “Sunset” and, being the penultimate episode of the season, looks to be fairly action packed. I don’t regret ceasing my viewership of the show, but I can see why some of you guys dig it.

Slipping further into religious fervor, Bill (Stephen Moyer) gives Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) an order she’s loath to carry out. Armed with a damning video of Russell (Denis O’Hare) and Steve (Michael McMillian), the military delivers an ultimatum to the Authority. Claude (Giles Matthey) and Maurella (Kristina Anapau) take Sookie (Anna Paquin) to meet the faerie elder, who may know something about an ancient family secret. Alcide (Joe Manganiello) reconnects with his father; Sam (Sam Trammell) and Luna (Janina Gavankar) hitch a rideinto the Authority.

TV: [Next On] Synopsis For “Dexter” Premiere; “True Blood” Image Teases Bill’s “Master Plan”…

Showtime has released the plot synopsis for “Dexter” Episode 7.01: “Are You….?”

After witnessing her brother kill Travis Marshall, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) attempts to reconcile with Dexter (Michael C. Hall) while struggling to cover up their involvement with the murder. Meanwhile, Detective Mike Anderson has an unfortunate run-in, Quinn and Batista begin to make amends, and LaGuerta finds evidence that causes her to re-think the closed Bay Harbor Butcher case.

In addition, TVline has a new image from “True Blood” that teases Bill’s “master plan.” As the site explains, look at the shiftiness in Bill’s eyes as he hovers over that vial of precious Lilith’s blood. They believe that he’s about to do an about-face, betray Salome and Co., and save the world. So, has Bill been a good guy all along? Probably, which is why “True Blood” continues to suffer from “Heroes” syndrome. READ MORE

TV: [Next On] Three Clips, Including A “Bloody Romance”, Tease This Week’s Episode Of “True Blood”

Starting this Sunday, HBO looks ahead to the final three episodes of “True Blood”‘s fifth season with episode #58 “Gone, Gone, Gone.” They’ve just released a clip, and given that I haven’t seen the show since this season’s fourth episode, it seems that things have gotten even freakier with this blood smeared slow dance. There’s also a slightly less interesting clip,“We Meet Again”, but it includes my fave Jessica so I’m tossing it in anyway. Oh whoops – as I’m typing this another one just popped up! It’s called “Unexpected Guest”. Let me know what happens!

With vampire-on-human attacks increasing, the Authority attempts to woo public favor. Meanwhile, Nora (Lucy Griffiths) tries to convert Eric to Lilith’s gospel. Jason finds a mysterious scroll; Elijah (Keram Malicki-Sanchez), the new vampire sheriff of Area 5, pushes Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Tara (Rutina Wesley) to obey a new mandate; Sam (Sam Trammell) and Luna (Janina Gavankar) search for Emma (Chloe Noelle); Russell (Denis O’Hare) seeks a higher calling.Written by Alexander Woo; directed by Scott Winant.

Found Footage ‘Dracula’ Series Primed For Web

Shortly after Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson called it quits, Telly Award-winning actor Timothy Woodward, Jr., in conjunction with Sky Studios, a partner of on-demand giant Hulu, announce that they are are poised to tackle the timeless tale of Dracula. Pia Cook (writer of the much anticipated film Blackout starring Woodward, Jr. and Emmy award-winning actor and star of the hit film Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, Bill Oberst, Jr.) has crafted a uniquely modern script that takes one of the most infamous villains and casts him in a surprising and refreshingly positive light.

Filming of the first installment is scheduled to begin this month and will be styled as a documentary of a medical student who is working to uncover a cure for leukemia. The audience will go through the process with Drake as he becomes his own test subject by injecting himself with the deadly virus. After a few unfortunate miscalculations we will see Drake’s horrific transformation into “Dracula”.

This found footage film will be released exclusively on the Internet and is expected to go viral and become an instant cult classic as the audience gets pulled into a uniquely personal portrayal of Drake, the good intentioned medical student with the project that goes awry. READ MORE

TV: [Next On] “True Blood” Episode #57, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”

Tonight, HBO aired a preview from the upcoming 57th episode of “True Blood”, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World.” Like I said last week, I made it about 4 episodes in before I had to pull the plug on the season. You know what I want to see? A spinoff about Jessica. It’s not like I’ve watched every episode of the show (not claiming to be an expert) – but she seems like the most fleshed out character to me. If they could create a show that focussed on her instead of Sookie and Bill, and turned down the camp a little bit, that might be more fun.

In episode #57, “As the Authority proceeds with Lilith’s plan, Eric plots his escape. Gran directs Sookie to a clue to her parents’ murderer. Andy and Jason search for leads to the identities of the people behind the shifter killings. Alcide recalls his pack induction; Arlene gets caught in Terry and Patrick’s crossfire; Steve gets a new pet.

TV: Two New Clips From “True Blood” Episode #56, Somebody I Used To Know

HBO has released two new clips from the upcoming 56th episode of “True Blood”, “Somebody I Used To Know.” They are respectively titled “Glimmer Of Hope” and “What Happened?” Which is something I’d like to know. I tried to follow this season for you guys – I really did. I made it about 4 episodes in before I had to pull the plug. I get why a lot of people like it, but they must see something in it that I can’t.

In episode #56, “At Authority headquarters, the Chancellors revel in the afterglow of recent events; Eric gets a message from Godric; Bill is shaken by a distant memory. Helped by Claude and his sisters, Sookie and Jason visit the site of their parents’ deaths, with shocking results. An emotional Luna tries to walk in Sam’s shoes. Hoyt’s new pals bring him a present; Lafayette leads a séance to purge a curse; J.D. ups the stakes of his fight with Alcide.

TV: [Next On] Preview Of “True Blood” Episode #56 ‘Somebody I Used To Know’

HBO has released the recap of last night’s episode of “True Blood” along with a look ahead at next week’s episode #56 “Somebody I Used To Know.” Sticking to my guns and bailing on the series, I haven’t watched an episode this season. Watching these recaps reassures me I made the right decision — it looks as even more humans have become creatures of the night. I expect Bon Temp to be completely void of humans by the series finale. Lame.

[BD Review] ‘Twins Of Evil’ Is One Of Hammer’s Best!

Like Vampire Circus, Twins of Evil came along at a time when Hammer was on the fast track to ruin. The market was oversaturated thanks to direct competitors, like Amicus and Tigon, among others, and the studio’s strategy of churning out nothing but cheap looking franchise films. In 1970, Hammer decided to change up their approach to vampires with The Vampire Lovers, the first entry in the Karnstein trilogy. The gentleman vampire and his converted minions had been done over and over again, so with Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla serving as an inspiration, the name of the game became sexy lesbian vampires.

Twins of Evil is the farthest removed from the source material out of the three films, and is also great because of that – the other films are fun, but mixing it up was a smart move. While one of its biggest draws is the sexual presence of Mary and Madeleine Collinson, sisters that were the first identical twin Playmates, there are very few references to woman-on-woman action and little nudity, effectively removing the biggest reasons for its predecessors’ cult status. Screenwriter Tudor Gates also takes a page out of the Witchfinder General handbook by having Gustav Weil (Peter Cushing) blur the line between good and evil. As leader of Karnstein’s ‘Brotherhood,’ he lives as piously as possible, hunting down suspected witches and burning them at the stake. He looks down at those who enjoy earthly (carnal) pleasures, which is why he is constantly at odds with Count Karnstein (Damien Thomas), a man interested in black magic, Satanism, and sleeping with pretty much every strumpet that passes by. This is also why he’s taken aback by his recently orphaned nieces from Venice, who come to live with him and aren’t exactly Puritans.

Twins of Evil has vampires in it, but it’s more of a folk horror film that focuses on the grey area that lies between what is distinctively black and white. The Collinson twins are surprisingly good as the dual natured sisters, establishing what is good and evil in the context of the film early on, but Cushing is who really sells the conflict of cult vs. occult. The question of whether his methods for purifying the earth of evil are morally justified or hypocritical is the cornerstone of the film. Coupled with some fun gore and hilarious innuendo (a candlestick being stroked is worth a few laughs), Twins of Evil is one of Hammer’s best.

A/V

God bless Synapse, their 1080p transfer for Twins of Evil is almost Criterion worthy. The colors are preserved wonderfully, particularly the blue hues of the forest at nightfall. Aside from some very minor speckles and scratches, the picture is flawless and vivid with no DNR or banding issues of any kind. With such a balanced transfer and grain that’s still intact, it’s hard to imagine that the film is forty years old. The DTS-HD 2.0 track captures the emptiness of Castle Karnstein and the open air of the woods, but is limited by being 2.0; in other words, it’s good but not great.

Special Features

The Flesh and The Fury: X-Posing Twins of Evil (83:24) – Like the documentary Synapse put on their Vampire Circus release, The Flesh and The Fury is a really good, in-depth documentary on Hammer vampire history. Joe Dante, Kim Newman, and Tim Lucas – among others – chat about the more outwardly erotic direction Hammer went in after the British censors raised the X certificate age to 18. The influence of Le Fanu’s Carmilla – which predates Dracula by a quarter of a century – helped shift their focus from sequelizing their movies from the 50’s to creating the Karnstein trilogy and giving their vampires a new angle. The feature-length documentary, which is only three minutes shy of its subject’s running time, details the development of the film, including its original direction, the discovery of its two leading ladies, and spotlights on the other actors individually.

The Props That Hammer Built: The Kinsey Collection (23:28) – Hammer historian Wayne Kinsey shows off his impressive prop collection and gives some insight into their place in the studio’s history. He has a really impressive assortment of miniatures, concept art, and fake body parts (especially since most of the props were sadly thrown away before Hammer’s relevance was truly established), but the most unique thing he has is a bat puppet, which was created for an alternate ending to The Brides of Dracula.

Deleted Scene (1:09) – A sequence where Anton’s (David Warbeck) class of young girls sing along to his new composition. In the theatrical version, Gustav bursts into the house right as they’re getting started; the scene’s absence suits the flow of the film much better.

Writer and director Jason Figgis has just teased us with a tasty first look at his latest production, The Ecstasy of Isabel Mann, a new vampire flick from October Eleven Pictures Ltd. The pic promises the goods with the tagling: “Vampires. Daylight. No Sparkles.” Indeed.

It’s the story of a teenage girl who is seduced into an incredibly violent sect of day-walking vampires,” said Figgis.

Her class mates start to go missing and two detectives believe that she is the prime suspect. Nothing is quite as it seems for those about her as the disturbed teenager runs amok, killing at will in the woodlands by her home; aided by her vampire guides who are training her in the art of the kill – with horrifically bloody results for those closest to her.
