[Interview] Director Jennifer Lynch Talks ‘Chained’, ‘A Fall From Grace’ And ‘The Monster Next Door’

If you’re a fan of director Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena, Surveillance, Hisss), her new film Chained hits Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD today – October 2nd – from Anchor Bay Films.

I recently hopped on the phone with Lynch and we talked about the challenges of making an intense serial killer film, the process of casting Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men In Black, “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”) and her upcoming projects. It turns out she’s taking a turn into lighter fare (after her very next film, A Fall From Grace) with the Monster Squad-esque The Monster Next Door.

In Chained, “Coming home from a routine trip to the movies, eight-year-old Tim (Bird) and his mother, Sarah (Ormond) are picked up by a psychopathic cab driver named Bob (D’Onofrio). It ends up being their last ride together. Bob murders the young boy’s mother and keeps Tim as his unwilling protégée, making him clean up the mess following each murder he commits. After a couple of aborted escape attempts, Bob chains Tim – now renamed Rabbit — allowing just enough length to move freely within the house. As the years pass, Bob starts instructing Rabbit, teaching him anatomy and human behavior. Now a teenager, Rabbit (Eamon Farren, X: Night of Vengeance) is slowly being pressed by Bob to start his own homicidal spree. Slowly but surely, he must soon choose whether to follow in Bob’s serial killer footsteps or make one final, desperate attempt to break free…”

The cast also includes Gina Phillips (Jeepers Creepers, “Ally McBeal”) Conor Leslie (“90210”), Evan Bird (“The Killing”), with Jake Weber (Dawn of the Dead, “Medium”) and Julia Ormand (My Week With Marilyn, “Mad Men,” The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). Right from the beginning the reality and grittiness of Chained, the new film by Jennifer Lynch, made me want to turn away. I wanted to stop watching and not because the movie was bad; it was so powerful and painfully true to life that I couldn’t help but be moved by it. It sickened me and at the same time I was permanently sucked inside the story. Based on a screenplay by Damian O’Donnell, Chained takes a typical tale of an abused child growing up to become a serial killer and makes it something that is Oscar worthy.

The world is jacked up. We all know this and we turn away from the news when we hear everyday of children going missing. We shy away from the fact that there are sadistic individuals that abduct, torture and kill young women. Very rarely do we have to see or hear the complete details of these people’s upbringings or what drove them to do what they do unless we pick up a book or watch a documentary.

Harnessing that sadistic nature is easy for some actors. For Vincent D’Onofrio, it seems to flow off him with such ease that it scares me. He is so incredibly brilliant in all of his roles, and as Bob he is no different. Bob is a cool collected cab driver that picks up a woman every day to rape and kill. When he picks up Sarah Fittler (Julia Ormond) one day, he has excess baggage to deal with – her nine-year-old son, Tim. Instead of killing the boy, he mentors him in a way only a psychopath can: keeping him chained to the wall. Renaming him Rabbit, Bob forces the child to clean up after he has his ‘taste of a woman’ each night.

Young actor Evan Bird is amazing as nine year old Tim/Rabbit. This kid only gets about twenty minutes of screen time, but his portrayal is strong and amazing. As Rabbit transitions to a teenager, Eamon Farren takes hold of the role and Bob decides it is time to educate him. The idea behind why Bob wants to make Rabbit his protégé is echoed through sickening flashbacks. We see why Bob is the way he is and are given hints as to how it will all end. Awkward, naïve and innocent; Farren’s ability to evoke sympathy for the character of Rabbit is uncanny.

The movie is filmed impeccably. The Blu-ray is crystal clear, bringing every detail into focus. Everything is set so perfectly, from the type of chairs used to the staging of how Rabbit and Bob sit to watch television, that it is easy to be engulfed in the story. There was never a moment where I thought I was watching a movie. Little things that D’Onofrio does throughout the film like a slight change in his speech pattern or just a simple action of patting his lips with a handkerchief are icing on the cake. The lighting and house set that we see the same angles of over and over and yet they do not not grow tiresome. Instead the claustrophobic aura grows more intense as the movie progresses. The darkness of the plot is accented with excessive amount of brown visually and the entire package is tied up with a jaw-dropping bow at the end.

Films are a way for us to see inside the evils of the world and keep a safe distance. Chained fully gives a well-rounded story that shows truth to the sick things that go on in this world. And it does a damn good job of it.

Another genre flick screening at the forthcoming 16th annual Fantasia International Film Festival (July 19-August 7) is Jennifer Lynch’s (Hisss and Surveillance) NC-17 thriller Chained, which stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Julia Ormond, Jake Weber, Eamon Farren, Conor Leslie and Evan Bird.

Recently acquired by Ancor Bay, we’ve score the first ever still to go along with two international one-sheets. Frankly, I’m not a huge fan of Lynch, but the NC-17 and promise of brutality (there must be something wrong with me) pique my interest.

Just a day or so ago we reported that The Classification and Rating Appeals Board upheld the NC-17 rating given to the movie Chained. The Classification and Rating Administration (CARA) had assigned the movie the NC-17 rating for “some explicit violence.” This decision was made despite several appeals. The Appeals Board heard statements on behalf of Chained from Kevin Carney, Executive Director of Marketing at Anchor Bay, and Jennifer Lynch, the Director of the film. The scene in question is an image of a throat being cut.

But Jennifer Lynch still (politely) disagrees. Speaking to The LA Times she says, “The one thing they [the appeals board] kept citing was context, that violence in a lot of other films doesn’t feel as intense. I have a lot of compassion for what [the MPAA] does. And they were all very nice and warm in the room. But it doesn’t seem fair to me. I feel like we are being punished because the film was done the way it was set out to be done, which was authentically.”

She will cut the film, but hopes that the unrated version will be available in come capacity as well. But she doesn’t see the scene as being particularly shocking. “Horror fans will see it and be stunned at the NC-17. They’ve seen much worse.” Kevin Carney adds, “There were horrific scenes in ‘Hostel 3′ that I can’t get out of my head, but what the MPAA kept saying is that it was context, which seems arbitrary. Compare our movie to ‘Sweeney Todd,’ where 13 or 14 people get their throat slit. There’s an equal amount of graphic-ness. It’s just a different style.”

Jennifer Lynch’s ‘Chained,’ Acquired By Anchor Bay, Receives An NC-17

The Classification and Rating Appeals Board today upheld the NC-17 rating given to the movie Chained. The Classification and Rating Administration (CARA) had assigned the movie the NC-17 rating for “some explicit violence.”

In the appeal brought by Anchor Bay Entertainment, the Appeals Board heard statements on behalf of Chained from Kevin Carney, Executive Director of Marketing at Anchor Bay, and Jennifer Lynch, the Director of the film. The Classification and Rating Administration was represented by Chairman Joan Graves.

Jennifer Lynch hasn’t impressed me as of late, considering I hated Hisss and wasn’t a fan of the poorly conceived Surveillance. Still, she displays some serious talent, which is why I’m stoked about Chained, being sold at AFM.
