Elizabeth Banks Plays an Elite Clown in ‘Hunger Games’

bankshunger111611 Elizabeth Banks Plays an Elite Clown in Hunger Games

Do you think when Elizabeth Banks signed up for The Hunger Games she knew she’d be unrecognizable? After watched the quasi-impressive trailer premiere the other day, I literally had no idea Banks played a clown (named “Effie Trinket”) with a microphone. Truth be told, the costume and make-up design of the “elite” class in this dystopian tale is exactly what’s wrong with it. As I sniped the other day, it looks like director Gary Ross is pushing into Joel Schumacher Batman territory. I’m highly concerned.

Originally described as Running Man meets Battle Royale, the movie also mixes in heavy tones from Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short “The Lottery”.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Dayo Okeniyi, Amandla Stenberg, Chris Mark, Jacqueline Emerson, Wes Bentley, Lenny Kravitz, Toby Jones, Stanley Tucci also star. READ MORE

Lionsgate’s Dystopian ‘The Hunger Games’ Inspired by Terrifying Short ‘The Lottery’

Lionsgates Dystopian The Hunger Games Inspired by Terrifying Short The Lottery

I’ve never read the books, but I do recall the initial pitch when Lionsgate acquired the rights some time ago. It was The Running Man meets Battle Royale. They’ve since abandoned the comparison, but the newly released trailer does everything but ignore that it’s a complete riff of the aforementioned films.

Lionsgate has finally unveiled the first full trailer for The Hunger Games, which is solely footage from the first half of the adaptation. It displays Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in a Dystopian future chosen for a yearly battle to the death. Only one can survive. The selection process is right out of Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short “The Lottery”, while the games themselves look like a reboot of Battle Royale. My main complaint, other than the Braveheart-esque score, is Director Gary Ross’ vision of the future. If there were a fine line to cross, he’s pushing into Joel Schumacher Batman territory.

Donald Sutherland Elected ‘Hunger Games’ President

More from the world of big studio franchises, Donald Sutherland has been cast as President Snow in the highly anticipated adaptation of the Suzanne Collin’s bestseller, The Hunger Games.

President Snow has been the autocratic ruler of Panem and its contained districts for some 25 years at the outset of the story. With a snake-like appearance, he is cruel and ruthless in his intimidation and control tactics.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Dayo Okeniyi, Amandla Stenberg, Chris Mark, Jacqueline Emerson, Wes Bentley, Lenny Kravitz, Toby Jones and Stanley Tucci also star.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross, will arrive on theaters March 23, 2012.

Lenny Kravitz Rounds Out Battle of ‘The Hunger Games’

Lionsgate announced today that iconic musician and actor Lenny Kravitz (Precious) has been cast in the role of “Cinna” in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel The Hunger Games.

Cinna is Katniss Everdeen’s assigned fashion stylist for the highly ceremonial lead up to The 74th Annual Hunger Games. Though he’s a mild mannered first time stylist, the designs he creates, such as the “Girl On Fire” costume for the tributes’ live televised debut, are show-stopping. With odds being set, wagers being placed, and wealthy benefactors able to occasionally intervene in the games, a high public profile is tantamount to a huge advantage for any contestant entering the arena. The stunning and unique designs Cinna creates for Katniss define her public identity, and in an all too real way, could also contribute to her very survival.

Deadline also adds that Toby Jones is playing the host/narrator of the games alongside Stanley Tucci. The Lionsgate film is set for March 23, 2012 release. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth topline.

‘Zombieland’ Star Signs Up For ‘The Hunger Games’

I’ve never seen a flick with as many casting announcements and rumors as The Hunger Games, Gary Ross’ adaptation of the popular Suzanne Collins novel. If the film keeps up this sort of momentum, we’re gonna see perspective gaffer names being tossed around soon.

The latest bit of casting news is that Woody Harrelson – who played the memorable role of Tallahassee in Zombieland – has landed of part of Haymitch Abernathy, who mentors and trains Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) for the title event. Considering this film is a franchise starter for the studio, I wonder if Harrelson’s character lives through the series (which is a trilogy), as he recently said that he “[doesn't] feel like a sequels guy” when asked about the possibility of Zombieland 2.

Other recently announced additions to the cast include Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane, and Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket. The Hunger Games hits theatres on March 23, 2012.

Mr. Eyebrows, Wes Bentley, Lands Role in ‘The Hunger Games’

I’m finding it incredibly hard keeping up with the casting of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games, which is why I’ve opted to only report on “big name” additions.

This morning Lionsgate announced that P2, Ghost Rider and American Beauty star Wes Bentley has landed the role of “Seneca Crane” in the much anticipated Gary Ross-directed adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel originally described as Battle Royale meets Running Man (before turning into a Twilight-esque film).

Bentley joins a cast of talented young actors – Jennifer Lawrence as series heroine Katniss Everdeen with Willow Shields as little sister Primrose, and Josh Hutcherson, who was cast as Peeta Mellark, with Liam Hemsworth in the role of Gale Hawthorne. Paula Malcomson will be playing Katniss and Primrose’s mother. It was also announced that Elizabeth Banks has signed on for the part of Katniss’ pre-games handler Effie Trinket.

The pic, in theaters March 23, 2012, is set in post-apocalyptic America, Hunger Games introduces 16-year-old heroine Katniss Everdeen, who must participate in a fight-to-the-death annual event called the Hunger Games. The battles are televised, and pit youths from each of the Capitol’s 12 Districts against each other.

Some pretty wicked casting to end the evening as Emily Wickersham (I Am Number Four), Wes Bentley (P2) and Jennifer Carpenter (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Quarantine, “Dexter”) are going to Gone opposite Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer’s Body, Red Riding Hood) in the thriller from Lakeshore Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.

Gone will be directed by Heitor Dhalia from a script penned by Allison Burnett centering on a kidnap survivor who attempts to find the same killer whom she believes has abducted her sister. Seyfried came on board in February.
