Miso Soup

Easygoing young Kenji makes good money guiding Americans through Tokyo’s seamy nightlife. His teenage girlfriend has no objections, as long as he reserves New Year’s Eve for her. But Kenji’s latest client, a simmering psychopath called Frank, disrupts those holiday plans. He wants to regale Kenji with crazy monologues as he hypnotizes low-level sex workers. A fat man with superhuman strength, skin that’s metallic to the touch, and an unsettling habit of telling contradictory lies, Frank immediately raises the guide’s hackles. Kenji even suspects that this ugliest of Americans dismembered a local schoolgirl and immolated a homeless man. But until he can prove his suspicions–and for a disturbing while after–Kenji will keep leading this monster man from one bizarre scene to another. It’s a compelling nightmare for Kenji and the reader, who both hope he’ll either wake up screaming or escape and alert the cops. Instead, everyone remains in evil’s thrall until it’s too late. A wicked meditation on the worst traits of American and Japanese society, this is a creepy culture clash indeed.

Where’s Stephen Sommers’ ‘Odd Thomas’? Lawsuit Provides Answers…

The Hollywood Reporter is sharing some shocking news regarding Stephen Sommers’ adaptation of Dean Koontz’ Odd Thomas, starring Anton Yelchin, Addison Timlin and Willem Dafoe.

Says the site, the producers of Odd Thomas are suing several entities alleging that they failed to provide [a shocking] $35 million that would have gone toward marketing and distributing the movie and paying back production loans. Two Out of Ten Prods., known at TOOT, and Fusion Films filed their lawsuit Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, naming as defendants Outsource Media Group Fund, ABS Investment Group, individuals Craig Chang and Mark Bishop, and Outsource Media Group. The latter, referred to as OMG in the lawsuit, is run by principals Bradley Holmes, Dan Reardon and Harrison Kordestani, an executive producer of lower-budget horrors and thrillers such as The Coffin, Already Dead, In a Dark Place and Intervention.

According to TOOT and Fusion, OMG pledged to spend $25 million on prints and advertising to support a release of Odd Thomas in the U.S. and another $10 million to partially refinance certain loans. Several deadlines came and went, but most of the money never materialized, according to the lawsuit, filed by the Law Offices of Alan S. Gutman in Beverly Hills. You can read more about the claim here.

[Horror In Your House] July 3rd, 2012

This week doesn’t contain a large number of releases, but what it lacks in volume it more than makes up for in quality. Literally, for the first time ever I am buying every movie listed below. First on my list is The Entity which is finally being released on Blu-ray by Anchor Bay. On top of that, crowd pleaser Some Guy Who Kills People has arrived along with Bobcat Goldthwait’s latest piece of demented cinema, God Bless America. But that’s not all, the AMAZING Tasmanian Tiger hunting flick, Hunter starring Willem DaFoe and Sam Neil is also out. Almost too much goodness for one week.

Happy 4th of July, Everyone!

THE ENTITY (DVD / Blu-ray) (1982) – Anchor Bay

Entity [Horror In Your House] July 3rd, 2012Oscar-nominee Barbara Hershey (Black Swan, Insidious) stars as Carla Moran, a hard-working single mother until the night she is raped in her bedroom by someone — or something — that she cannot see. Despite skeptical psychiatrists, she is repeatedly attacked in her car, in the bath, and in front of her children. Could this be a case of hysteria, a manifestation of childhood sexual trauma, or something even more horrific? Now with a group of daring parapsychologists,Carla will attempt an unthinkable experiment: to seduce, trap and ultimately capture the depraved spectral fury that is THE ENTITY. Ron Silver (Reversal of Fortune, Ali) co-stars in this supernatural shocker directed by Sidney J. Furie (Iron Eagle, The Ipcress File) from a screenplay by Frank De Felitta (Audrey Rose), based on his bestselling novel.

MICAH SAYS: CO-PICK OF THE WEEK. One of the finest horror flicks on the entire 1980s (and near the top of my all time list). Heck, even Martin Scorsese has this in his top ten horror flicks of all time. Ghost Rape for president.

GOD BLESS AMERICA (DVD / Blu-ray) – Magnolia Home Entertainment

Frank (Joel Murray) has had enough of the downward spiral of American culture. Divorced, recently fired, and possibly terminally ill, Frank feels he has nothing left to live for. However, instead of taking his own life, he embarks on a killing spree with cohort Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement, and together they embark on a nation-wide assault on our country s dumbest, most irritating celebrities.

MICAH SAYS: I’m including this movie because you need to see it. Period. Bobcat Goldthwait’s directing chops are getting progressively better and better.

HUNTER (DVD / Blu-ray) – Magnolia Home Entertainment

Martin David, a skilled and focused mercenary, is sent into the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for a tiger believed to be extinct. Hired by an anonymous company that wants the tiger’s genetic material, Martin arrives in Tasmania posing as a scientist. He proceeds to set up base camp at a broken-down farmhouse, where he stays with a family whose father has gone missing. Usually a loner, Martin becomes increasingly close to the family. However, as his attachment to the family grows, he is led down a path of unforeseen dangers, complicating his deadly mission.

MICAH SAYS: CO-PICK OF THE WEEK. Like The Grey , but with even more existentialism. This one isn’t going to be for everyone as it is the definition of a slow burn, but it’s once it traps your attention you are in for an absolute treat. Willem DaFoe delivers one of his best and most devastating performances to date. In my top five for they year.

SOME GUY WHO KILLS PEOPLE – Anchor Bay

At first glance, Ken Boyd may seem like an average comic enthusiast, living with his mother and working to make ends meet as an underpaid, underappreciated ice cream parlor attendant. But Ken has a dirty little secret: he fantasizes about killing people. After being released from a stay in the loony bin, for severe mental trauma suffered when he was beaten and tortured by a gang of high school thugs, Ken’s repressed anger suddenly reaches a boiling point. With gleeful enthusiasm Ken hunts down his tormentors, one by one, and exacts his bloody revenge.

MICAH SAYS: Another movie that everyone should watch. It’s funny, dark and full of awesome.

Willem Dafoe is NOT in ‘Pacific Rim’

Willem Dafoe has said there’s no him in Pacific Rim. Bloody Disgusting’s Australian correspondent Maria Lewis (@moviemazz) spoke to Dafoe in Australia this afternoon where he’s promoting his new film The Hunter. Since July it’s been widely reported that Dafoe was ‘in talks’ to join Guillermo del Toro’s monster movie but the veteran character actor said it’s all “bad information.

If I am they haven’t told me,” he said. “Listen, I like Guillermo del Toro. ‘The Devil’s Backbone’ for me is almost the perfect movie, I adore that movie, he’s really good.

I have met with him on occasions and we have talked about working together, but not on this.

But if I’m in this movie they haven’t told me yet, which is my moment to say – in big letters – don’t believe what you read on the internet.

Dafoe went on to say that although the internet is great for “some things“, it has led the Hollywood rumour-mill to get out of hand…

Willem Dafoe Plays a Police Chief (Again) in ‘Odd Thomas’

I fell in love with horror author Dean Kootz back in ’93 when my school principal called me to the office and told me the “subject matter was too adult for me.” Everyone was big on Stephen King, I was all Kootnz.

I was such a huge fan that one of the biggest disappointments in my life was the 1998 feature film Phantoms, which castrated one of the most chilling stories I read in my young life. After numerous Hollywood dumpers, Kootnz swore off feature film adaptations, at least until the past few years.

Gearing up for production in New Mexico later this spring and summer is Odd Thomas, a new Kootnz adaptation this time by Stephen Sommers. The only thing “Odd” is the directing choice, considering Sommers is responsible for debacles such as Van Helsing and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Sure, I loved Deep Rising, but 12 years hasn’t given me much to look forward to…

Ranting aside, THR has some good news as they’re reporting Willem Dafoe (Antichrist) is in talks to join the cast of the supernatural thriller that centers on a short-order cook named Odd Thomas who can commune with the dead, a secret only his girlfriend (Addison Timlin) and the local police (Dafoe) chief know.

The young man can also spot malevolent forces called bodachs, who feed on pain and portent imminent death. When Odd sees them in spades surrounding a stranger, he finds himself in a race against time to avert a catastrophe.

The movie, with a budget in the $20 to $30 million range.

Review: Criterion’s ‘Antichrist’ Blu-Ray

While Danish director Lars von Trier’s films dwell outside the mainstream realm, the topics he explores are as commonplace as they come. It’s his stance on these matters that challenges the viewer, causing them to see things from a viewpoint that is both so ugly and far removed from traditional thinking that it becomes almost as alien as it is difficult to comprehend. Antichrist, the autuer’s latest, follows this formula closely, yet also has the distinction of overloading those who dare watch the now infamous film – you’ve seen worse, trust me – with so many gloomy viewpoints and surreal images that the film could, and has, appeared to some as being about nothing. In a way, it is; the state of despair and madness that She (Charlotte Gainsbourg) exists in is so deep that her depression is nothingness, an emotional state where the darkness is so consuming that nobody can relate to where she is mentally or physically.
