[Halloween Treat] Wanna See Sigourney Weaver Tease The ‘Alien: Resurrection’ FX Crew?

We’re taking you back to 1996 when Jean-Pierre Jeunet was directing Alien: Resurrection, the four installment in Fox’s Alien franchise that starred Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder, Dominique Pinon, Ron Perlman.

The boys over at studioADI have shared another great old-school video from their archives, this time showing the “real” Sigourney Weaver joking with the effects team.

You would think being on a cramped set with set-dressing tanks full of our Alien embryo creatures, the whole crew, and actors at work would make for a demanding day of shooting. So it was. Until Sigourney saw us shooting some behind the scenes video for our archives between shots and wanted in on the fun. [Interview] ‘Frankenweenie’ Screenwriter John August On Being Pro-Science In A Harsh Political Climate

Frankenweenie is easily the best Tim Burton movie in a decade. I was almost braced to dislike it, so it was a wonderful surprise to find myself concurring with Brad’s glowing review. In the film, a young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

I recently sat down with screenwriter John August (Big Fish, Go) to talk about how he approached the expansion of Burton’s original 25 minute short into a feature length piece. We also discuss some of the amazing speeches made in the film by Martin Landau’s no BS teacher Mr. Rzykruski. They’re quite refreshing to hear given how timid a lot of mainstream films are in regard to these things.

The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow), while Charlie Tahan and Atticus Shaffer were later added. Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film, and that several of the character names—Victor, Elsa Van Helsing, Edgar “E” Gore and Mr. Burgermeister — were inspired by classic horror films.

BeetleJuice-2

Winona Ryder (Literally) Rolls Her Eyes At Thought Of A New ‘Beetlejuice’!

I love this story so much it’s not even funny. As you may or may not know, nearly everyone in Hollywood plays the “PC” game, meaning, every answer they give is a load of horse sh*t. Winona Ryder doesn’t play that game.

This past weekend the cast and crew of Frankenweenie took to Disneyland in California to talk about the animated pic arriving in theaters October 5.

With both Ryder and Tim Burton taking part, it was only a matter of time until some fresh Beetlejuice talk hit the Web. While Burton is said to be part of the project (it’s unclear if he’ll direct), Seth Grahame-Smith, the screenwriter behind Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, is working on the current draft. Michael Keaton is also said be returning.

“At the Frankenweenie press junket in Anaheim on Sunday, a reporter enthusiastically told Winona Ryder that she was very excited for Beetlejuice 2 and hoped that Ryder would be in the movie,” says Flixist. “Ryder had just spent the fifteen minutes prior gushing about her emotional connection to all of her roles in Burton’s movies, with a particular emphasis on Lydia. Given that, you’d think she might be pretty enthusiastic about the new movie, or at least somewhat optimistic. Instead, her response was a heavy sigh, a roll of the eyes, and a “Yeah, that would be…great.

Tim Burton himself seemed more optimistic about the project, but was surprisingly hands-off about the whole thing. When asked about the project, he sounded somewhat uncomfortable and gave a non-answer. “Somebody’s writing a version, but I’m sort of…not making any preconceived ideas about it, and…not over-thinking something that I haven’t seen, so I’m just kind of keeping an open mind about it and seeing what comes.” Burton said that he is passionate about every project he goes into, so he could just have his mind on other work, but it seems odd for him to be quite as distant as he is. Thanks to BD reader Matthew R. for the tip.

[BD Review] Brad Says ‘Frankenweenie’ Is The Best Tim Burton Movie In A Decade

Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie is playing the ongoing Fantastic Fest in Austin, so we’re chiming in with a review. In the film a young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences. Brad absolutely loved the film and says it’s Burton’s best work since at least Big Fish. I tend to agree, the movie flys by and gives Burton something to work with he hasn’t had in a while – a good script.

I don’t think Burton has ever connected with his audience like this. While Frankenweenie may not be the best movie ever made, it’s overflowing with passion, creativity and genuine heart. It comes from a place where filmmakers begin their careers, a place deep within the solar plexus that just bleeds with energy and ingenuity.

The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow). Newcomers include Charlie Tahan as Victor and Atticus Shaffer as Edgar “E” Gore.

[BD Review] ‘Frankenweenie’ Revives The Tim Burton Of Past!!!

For the better part of the past decade it had appeared that Tim Burton had lost his mojo. As a fan of his earlier works it felt as if he was just “going through the motions” of directing in order to collect millions if dollars. Everything from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Alice in Wonderland have felt soulless and empty. It comes as no surprise that Burton’s last good movie was his 2003 Big Fish, being that it shares the same emotional power as Frankenweenie, his stop-motion animated feature inspired by his 1984 short of the same name. Burton deals with loss in both Big Fish and Frankenweenie, something that every viewer can relate to. It’s a bit sad that he had to mentally take himself back to ‘84 to reconnect with audiences, but what he delivers is an overtly emotional animated film that’s not only touching, but also eternal.

Frankenweenie, based on Burton’s short and penned by John August, takes us back to Burton’s childhood when the only things important to him were his dog, his parent’s acceptance, and movies. In what could be described as a dark and twisted poetic tale of life, Victor (voiced by Charlie Tahan) loses his dog Sparky only to revive him in an homage to “Frankenstein.” When the town’s kids find out, they also attempt to bring back their pets, only to dire consequences.

Horror fans will juice over Frankenweenie as it takes the classic tale of “Frankenstein” and mixes in an epic homage to Godzilla, The Mummy, Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man and more. It’s such a heartfelt and authentic take on Mary Shelley’s novella that it should make the creators of that fraud ParaNorman weep.

And unlike the horrendous Corpse Bride, the stop-motion was beautifully choppy (it drives me crazy when they smooth out stop-motion in post, which completely defeats the purpose). The animation itself is absolutely stunning, especially the sequence where Victor brings Sparky back from the dead. But much credit goes to the direction of Burton, who chooses to tell much of the story from the perspective of Sparky. You can tell that he really wants the audience to fall in love with Sparky before his ultimate demise (it wouldn’t be shocking at all if you teared up twice by the end credits.)

I may have written Burton off too soon, because this could be the beginning of his career…

[San Diego Comic-Con '12] The Art Of ‘Frankenweenie’ Exhibition

Earlier this evening at the San Diego Comic-Con I attended “The Art Of Frankenweenie Exhibition”. Hosted by Disney, this was an in-depth look at the materials that acclaimed director Tim Burton used for his latest stop-motion animated feature film. The exhibition premiered in Barcelona before making its U.S. debut today. When the tour is complete it will have visited seven countries including Spain, France, England, Japan, Mexico, Canada and the U.S.A.

Producer Allison Abbate was onhand at the gallery and guided me through the pieces. We’re not just talking sketches (which were of course present), but actual sets used in the stop-motion rendering for the film. And whether or not you’re growing tired of Burton’s signature themes, there’s no denying his talent as a visual artist. Seeing his work rendered in three dimensional, intricately detailed miniatures (amongst backgrounds that provide them with depth) is pretty captivating.

Abbate explained to me that principal photography – which is always lengthy on these types of films – took about two and a half years. She also spoke about how personal the project is for Burton. Not only is it based on his very first short, but it deals with the grief he felt when losing his first pet. The classroom scene in particular (as seen below) contains a number of references to Burton’s influences with some of he children representing the “Frankenstein” and “Igor” iconography quite accurately. And every director has his signature. Concerning the kitchen scene depicted she remarked, “and of course this is the Tim Burton take on domesticity that we all know so well.

Frankenweenie was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D. The talented voice cast includes Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder. Directed by Burton from a screenplay by John August, the film hits U.S. theaters on October 5th, 2012.

Head inside for an in depth look at the exhibition. READ MORE
