New ‘Frankenweenie’ Trailer Takes Inspiration From ‘Frankenstein’ & ‘Bride of Frankenstein’

Walt Disney Pictures has released a terrific new trailer for Frankenweenie, Tim Burton’s latest animated feature in which a young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences. The trailer taps into every child’s fear of death and dealing with loss, while also giving heavy homage to both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. Frankly, I think this looks absolutely fantastic.

The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow), while Charlie Tahan and Atticus Shaffer were later added. Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film, and that several of the character names—Victor, Elsa Van Helsing, Edgar “E” Gore and Mr. Burgermeister— were inspired by classic horror films.

A heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, ‘Frankenweenie’ will be filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience.

Seth Grahame-Smith Says ‘Beetlejuice 2′ Is A Straight Sequel, Other Characters Possibly Returning

BeetleJuice40912 Seth Grahame Smith Says Beetlejuice 2 Is A Straight Sequel, Other Characters Possibly Returning

I met up with writer Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Pride, Prejudice And Zombies) today at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills to talk about Dark Shadows. While he’s made a name for himself with his novels and has several high-profile screenplay credits on the horizon, it’s his first major release as a screenwriter. We had a nice long chat about the film, the bulk of which will be hitting later this week. But I figured I’d go ahead and share his update on Beetlejuice 2 with you guys. It’s not too much different than updates he’s offered in the past, though things seem to be progressing – and he’s acknowledging that some other favorite characters may return.

I have to ask, what’s that status of Beetlejuice 2?

The status is everyone’s waiting for me to get off my ass. I’ve met with Michael Keaton about it, I’ve met with Tim [Burton] about it. Warner Brothers is obviously eager. But right now the ball’s in my court to sort of crack the story that will make it worth of doing this again. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it to you. I don’t want to have to look fans in the face and apologize for making a bad Beetlejuice movie, because it’s one of my favorite movies. And I don’t want to make anything just because I can. I don’t think Tim would participate [with those motives in mind] and I certainly know Michael wouldn’t. If we get something worthy…

Any chance of Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis or Winona Ryder’s characters returning?

It’s all possible. In terms of the story, however many years that are between the two films will be the amount of years that are between the two story lines. It’s not a reboot or a remake, it’s a straight sequel with Michael Keaton returning as Beetlejuice.

Check back later in the week for the rest of the interview. Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Chloe Moretz and Helena Bonham Carter. It opens this Friday, May 8th.

What ‘Frankenweenie’ “Flaws” Does The Animation Director Speak Of?

What Frankenweenie Flaws Does The Animation Director Speak Of?

I’m a huge fan of stop-motion animation, which is why I’m a little too excited for Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, his feature film adaptation of his 1984 short that follows young Victor whom conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

But after witnessing the cinematic abortion known as Corpse Bride, I’m incredible nervous that Burton will continue down the same path that George Lucas followed with Star Wars. While Lucas can’t help but abuse CGI, Burton can’t help but to tweak the stop-motion so it’s appearance is smooth and clean.

The LA Times shared a new image and a very concerning quote: “You’d think black-and-white would be forgiving because it’s just shades of gray. But it isn’t. It shows every little flaw,” said Trey Thomas, Frankenweenie‘s animation director, speaking at his East London office about the movie’s monochrome aesthetic.

When Thomas speaks of “flaws”, is he referring to the glitchy effect of stop-motion animation? We won’t know until October 4 when Walt Disney Pictures reanimates Frankenweenie in theaters. READ MORE

See Frankenweenie and His Master in First Images!

In Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences. Arriving in theaters October 5, 2012 from Walt Disney Pictures’, EW was granted a first look at the new stop-motion film that includes the dog, the doctor and the master.

The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow), while Charlie Tahan and Atticus Shaffer later added.

While full details are inside, Burton has enlisted the Corpse Bride team for this project, which concerns me a great deal. As I previously complained, Burton’s Corpse Bride was shot in stop-motion and then “cleaned up” in order to smooth out the rigid frames. Isn’t a “smooth” stop-motion film an oxymoron? READ MORE
