Over the past 6 years writer Ron Marz has become the architect of Image Comics’ Top Cow universe. After taking over the company’s flagship title Witchblade in 2004, Marz has turned New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini one of the strongest female protagonists in comics today. Now after 70 consecutive issues at the helm, Marz is stepping down from Witchblade with issue #150.
Ron sat down with Bloody-Disgusting to discuss his legendary run on Witchblade, as well as his future plans for the Top Cow universe as he prepares for the world changing events in the series Artifacts.
Now that longtime series scribe Ron Marz has parted ways with Top Cow’s “WITCHBLADE, it has been up in the air as to who will be penning the series once his run ends on issue #150. Well the wait is over as Tim Seeley (“HACK/SLASH”) has been announced as the new full-time writer of the monthly along with illustrator Diego bernard (“THE MAN WITH NO NAME”)! Below you can get the first images from the first issue and all the details from the official press release…
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE…
WITCHBLADE BEGINS A NEW CHAPTER
Tim Seeley and Diego Bernard Are Witchblade’s New Creative Team
“Berkeley, CA – 18 July 2011 – Sara Pezzini has been through a lot in the past six years. She’s had a child, maintained her police career while juggling her duties as Witchblade, lost and gained back the mystical gauntlet, hunted down those who kidnapped her daughter, and even discovered the inner-workings of the universe. Her life has been eventful. However, nothing has prepared her for what’s coming next!
Hot off the Top Cow universe-altering events of ARTIFACTS #13 and WITCHBLADE #150, WITCHBLADE #151 begins a new chapter in the story of Pezzini. The passionate new creative team will provide an ideal jumping on point for new readers.
These changes all start with Tim Seeley (HACK/SLASH) and Diego Bernard (The Man With No Name). Seeley and Bernard mark the first completely new creative team in over six years following the landmark run by Ron Marz and his co-collaborator Stjepan Sejic. Seeley will be using the Marz-era as a springboard from which to tell stories of Sara’s new life and build on the rich Top Cow history and continuity while bringing a new voice and putting her through new challenges.
“Over the years, I’ve developed a rep as a guy who likes to write women who kick ass, and look great doing it,” said Seeley. “I’m over-the-moon at getting the opportunity to follow up one of the most beloved creative teams in comic history, on one of the most enduring heroines ever!”
To celebrate this new chapter, Top Cow is lowering the regular cover price of Witchblade to $2.99 and offering two covers by John Tyler Christopher (ARTIFACTS) and Dennis Calero (X-Men: Noir), as well as a special retailer incentive cover by the legendary J. Scott Campbell.”
“WITCHBLADE #151″ a 32-page full color comic book, is available for order in the August issue of Previews.” READ MORE
In a surprise move announced today, long time “WITCHBLADE” scribe Ron Marz publicly announced that he will be parting ways with the series later this year to coincide with the release of issue #150 in November. The writer, who has been part of the series since 2004, had this to say about the move in his official statement, which hit the web just this afternoon…
Issue #150 of “Witchblade” will be my last on the title. When #150 ships later this year, it will be my 71st consecutive issue of “Witchblade,” in addition to various specials and minis that have spun out of the series. Stjepan Sejic, my artistic partner on the series since issue #116, will also be departing.
Stjepan and I will be moving over to another Top Cow project together. Can’t tell you what that project is yet — it’s a secret! — but it’s something old and something new, and we’re both looking forward to it quite a bit. I’ll also be chipping in on Stjepan’s epic fantasy, “Ravine,” which contains some of his most stunning artwork ever. So this is by no means the end of our collaboration.
The reason I’m stepping away from “Witchblade” really boils down to this: something had to go. There are just too many things on my plate, and in the interest of making my deadlines and keeping my sanity, I needed to let go of a book. I’m staying on the “Magdalena” monthly. That’s a book I’ve wanted to write for, literally, years, and I’m committed to it for the long term. The schedule on “Magdalena” has gotten snarled since last year’s launch — the reasons why, the effect on sales and the ways to fix it will be the basis of a future column. But we’re banking issues and will be back on a regular schedule.”
Marz’s Full Statement Can Be Read Over At Comic Book Resources
Besides his departure from “WITCHBLADE”, Marz also made it clear that he would continue donating his full-time services to his other series, “SHINKU” From Image Comics) and “MAGDALENA” (From Top Cow Comics).

Within Temptation, one of my favorite female fronted bands, has announced ‘The Unforgiving’ as their long awaited fifth studio album, which is tentatively scheduled for a March 2011 release. The album is going to be a concept album based on a comic book by writer Steven O’Connell (Bloodrayne, Dark 48). The band has redesigned their website to offer clues and images in anticipation of this release.
Also well known for their amazing live visual show, Within Temptation have commissioned Romano Molenaar (Witchblade, Darkness, X-Men) to create characters and scenery for ‘The Unforgiving’.
Guitarist Robin Westerholt comments: “On this album, we’ve taken a totally different approach. Each song on “The Unforgiving” was written along Steven’s narrative. The main characters of the comic are reflected in our songs. The concept pushed us and gave us the inspiration to come up with a new approach to our sound. It resulted in writing our best songs so far.”
Vocalist Sharon Den Adel adds in: “We have been big comic fans since our childhood. With this album, we felt the time was there to take a new step in our creative development, to take it further and broaden our horizon. Because of the concept, the songs are more diverse than ever before. It was the late 80’s when we started to read comic books, and that sound has certainly has left a mark on The Unforgiving.”
