[TV] Is Season 3 Of “American Horror Story” About Salem Witches? Perhaps With A Modern Day Twist?

Last week we reported that Kathy Bates had been added to the cast of “American Horror Story: Season 3″ as a character that used to be a friend of Jessica Lange’s character, but is now an enemy. Then a few days ago, Murphy spilled “Oh, Kathy’s never [played] someone this bad,” Ryan Murphy revealed to TVLine. “Her [character] is a bad, bad woman! Five times worse than [her] Misery character…When I pitched this to Kathy, her mouth was drop-jawed because what I was pitching actually happened. It’s a true event…” True event, huh?

Then at Paleyfest Dylan McDermott spilled, ““She really is. All the witches of Salem…there’s plenty of them!” That’s certainly in keeping with Murphy’s assertions that the season will be a more female-centric story. But what about his comments that Lange will be playing “glamour cat leading lady“. Did they really have those back in the day at Salem? I suppose it’s possible that he’s referring to how she would appear to others within the context of that time – but AHS just got done with a period season, and I was under the impression that they want to do something more modern day this time out. Of course, the “true event” factor sort of doubles back on that – maybe, and I’m just guessing here, there are two timelines in the show? One period and one modern?

Does that sound like something you’d be interested in? Jessica Lange, Frances Conroy, Kathy Bates Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga will all star.

[BD Review] ‘A Sisterhood of Death’ Is All Over The Place

Reviewed by Alex Wiggins

You know how some people compare things to car wrecks? They talk about how something was so horrible to watch, but they couldn’t look away. Yeah, A Sisterhood of Death was the wreck you saw, ignored, and walked away from only to never speak of it again. The low-budget horror-comedy focuses on three witches who lure men into satanic rituals by seducing them with the promise of a show at their burlesque house. Once the men are sacrificed, the women inherit supernatural powers that they use for their own selfish and shallow needs. At the core of the film are themes of vanity, lust for power, and greed, but director Antony De Gennaro fails to do any of them justice with his boring and slow-moving piece. Although cluttered with flaws, the film certainly does have some good in it.

First of all, shout out to Naomi Hiramoto for her superb special effects/make-up work. The film was clearly shot on a budget and it’s evident that she did the best she could with what she had (and succeeded greatly). Rolling off of that statement, the cinematography is easy on the eyes and simple. De Gennaro and cinematographer Connor Hair clearly know how to work around a small budget and use a lot of calm, natural lighting much to their advantage to give the film a very pleasing look/feel. The score fits the style and mood of the piece exceptionally well and is filled with cartoonish sounds and bubbly melodies. De Gennaro also does some interesting and consistent directorial decisions (such as the use of the color red). These types of decision are greatly noticeable in the opening scene. The girls are reminiscent of the sirens from Greek mythology (in the aspect of how they hang around water looking for men to seduce and ultimately prey on). De Gennaro also has a knack for aesthetically pleasing shots and camera work while mixing in his own unique brand of experimental camera shots, angles, and shenanigans. Overall, it’s evident that the heart of a good movie and passion is present, but Sisterhood is ultimately is a wannabe with no real potential.

Sisterhood’s biggest problem is that it knows what type of film it’s trying to be, but never quite gets there. Usually, when movies are a comedy the idea is to make people laugh. If you laugh at all during this movie (and this is a big “if”), it’s unintentional. Frequently, you will find yourself wondering if the acting in pornos are better than the actors in this movie or if that’s the joke. Also, the eighty-eight minute film doesn’t even develop a legitimate plot or conflict until forty-nine minutes in. Even then, a strong case could be made that there never was one. Everything just plays off like a bad adult version of Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark?. The film just overindulges in it’s own antics and campiness, which isn’t cute or funny to begin with, making a very difficult viewing experience. Finally, the characters are flat and inconsistent with no real connection to the audience. For example, take the character of Franky. Franky’s mannerisms, style, accent, and thought process hardly make any sense and you will often find yourself wondering why he is depicted the way he is or why he doesn’t die within the first thirty seconds of the film. You will probably even find yourself wondering why he’s also more attractive than the ‘sexy witches’. But then again, this isn’t a movie you want to dwell on.

When it comes to witches, stick with 1998’s The Craft because A Sisterhood of Death is all over the place with no solid direction, value, scares, or humor. At least with The Craft you get to see Fairuza Balk give the performance of a lifetime. However, if you and you friends have been drinking or are impaired, then Sisterhood just might be for you!

TV: Typecast Vamp Cast as Vamp in ‘True Blood’

If you’re going to add a vamp to the “True Blood” cast, why not look to the best fang-based franchise out there, Twilight? I’m obviously joking, but you still have to wonder if HBO purposely cast Twilight thesp Christopher Heyerdahl in yet another vampire role. That’s typecasting to the extreme, and frankly, a bit lazy.

Deadline reports that Heyerdahl is joining HBO’s hit vampire drama in a recurring role. He will portray Dieter Braun, an ancient, powerful vampire who plays a large part in the intelligence of the Authority and especially enjoys enhanced interrogation. That is familiar territory for Sanctuary alum Heyerdahl who played the ancient Volturi vampire Marcus in 3 of the Twilight movies: New Moon, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and the upcoming Part 2. Additionally, he played a demon in an arc on the CW’s “Supernatural.” READ MORE

Tony Winner Adapting ‘A Discovery of Witches’

David Auburn is looking for witches and vampires and has come on to adapt Deborah Harkness’ A Discovery of Witches for Warner Bros. and producers Denise Di Novi and Allison Greenspan, says Variety. Studio acquired the property last summer.

The story centers on a reluctant witch and a 1,500-year-old vampire. The witch — a direct descendant of the first woman executed in the Salem Witch trials — accidentally unlocks an enchanted manuscript and finds herself in a race to prevent an interspecies war.

Auburn’s best known as the author of the play “Proof,” which won the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play and the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for drama. He subsequently adapted the play for the 2005 film. He also wrote the script the 2006 feature The Lake House. READ MORE

First Look: Paramounts Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D

In theaters March 2, 2012 from Paramount Pictures’ is Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola’s twisted spin Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D, which stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the title characters.

Word on the street is that this flick is good, like really good. It’s an original take on the classic fairytale that is set 15 years after the siblings killed the witch who kidnapped them. Hansel and Gretel have now evolved into bounty hunters who pursue witches.

EW premiered the first ever image of both Renner and Arterton in the flick, with the promise of a trailer premiere next Thursday.

You see a series of flashbacks with their experience of killing that first witch, which is brilliant,” Arterton says of continuing Grimm’s fairytale in flashback form. “The candy house, and the witches are really repulsive and quite frightening. The make-up is out of this world. It’s this bone-chilling scene. Very dark. The girl who plays my character is brilliant, with the horrified expression she has.READ MORE

TV: The Great Chris Meloni to Become ‘True Blood’ Super Vamp?!

TV Line is reporting that HBO is courting Chris Meloni (who I will always remember as “Keller” from HBO’s “OZ” and from David Wain’s Wet Hot American Summer) to join the cast of “True Blood”.

The former “Law & Order: SVU” front man is circling a “major role” in the show’s upcoming fifth season. But what role? An HBO rep declined to comment, but they hear Meloni — who’s currently shooting a top-secret role in The Man of Steel — is in talks to play an incredibly powerful vampire.

If a deal comes to pass, this would be a major casting coup for “True Blood”. It would also mark a high-profile return to the small screen for Meloni following his sudden departure from SVU last spring. READ MORE

In a new brief, Kelly Overton (The Ring Two) and Louis Herthum (The Last Exorcism) have landed major recurring roles on the HBO vampire drama “True Blood”, says Deadline.

Overton will play a dirty, beautiful werewolf named Rikki who demands to know what’s become of the pack leader. Herthum will play a particularly large Marine-type werewolf who refuses to bow down before the new pack leader.

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, the Emmy-nominated show takes place at a time when vampires have come out of the coffin, and follows the on-and-off romance between waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). TV: Valentina Cervi Cast as “True Blood” Ancient Vamp

A fresh pile of crazy is making tracks for Bon Temps as TV Line reports that Italian actress Valentina Cervi (pictured below) is joining “True Blood’s” upcoming fifth season as a series regular — and her character sounds like the love child of Russell and Maryann.

The 35-year-old beauty will play “Salome”, an ancient vampire who is a world class seductress and fiercely intelligent. She also has quite a lot of madness in her. She is the most powerful person in every way yet capable of hiding this power when it serves her purposes.

TV: True Blood Gains a Mother Wolf, Reflection on Coverage

Once I begin covering something, it’s nearly impossible for me to stop (see Twilight, although I believe I have officially left that in the dust). Such the case with “True Blood,” HBO’s supernatural show that mixes vampires with werwolves, shape-shifters and witches. Sounds cool, no? Well, it was. In fact, it was once of my favorite ongoing series until the writers literally spit in the face of their supporters with season four. Instead of continuing to write for the horror crowd that made the show popular, they turned it into a shirtless ab-fest for girls to feel a tickle to. Even though I’ve already declared the show as dead, I’m curious to see if they take any of the criticism to heart with season five. Although I doubt it.

Anyhoo, coverage, yes, it’ll continue until it becomes hatred as pure as Twilight (most of you guys really, truly, absolutely hate that franchise with venomous rage!)

TV Line reports today that “True Blood” is introducing the woman who gave life to late werewolf packmaster Marcus. “My Name is Earl” character actress Dale Dickey (pictured below) is joining the HBO hit as Annie, Marcus’ werewolf mother. Powerful and respected within the pack due to her late son’s position, Annie is determined to perform a particular ritual.

Hopefully the ritual is to get Marcus to wear a shirt. READ MORE

TV: ‘True Blood’ Renewed for Fifth Season

While I have already declared “True Blood” as DEAD, HBO has officially renewed the Alan Ball-created series for a fifth season. I stand by my prediction that season five will be the final season, although it wouldn’t surprise me if they squeeze out a horribly half-assed sixth.

HBO has renewed the hit show for a 12-episode fifth season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. Created by Alan Ball, the series will begin production of new episodes later this year in Los Angeles, with debut set for summer 2012.

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, the Emmy-nominated show takes place at a time when vampires have come out of the coffin, and follows the on-and-off romance between waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).” Series creator Alan Ball is also an executive producer of the show, which is based on the bestselling “Sookie Stackhouse” novels by Charlaine Harris.
