The French explorer La Perouse, was wrecked on Vanikoro in 1788. The ship Boussole was destroyed on a reef along with most of the crew. The second ship Astrolabe was also wrecked, but survivors salvaged enough to build a small ship and sailed away. Two survivors remained on the island into the early 1800′s.
Darkness has descended on the city of Romance, and Death is coming for you in the most glorious way imaginable…
David R. Ellis, Xavier Gens, Joe Dante, Christian Alvart, Christopher Smith, Paco Plaza, Timo Vuorensola, Eron Sheean, Jorn Heitmann, Bjorn Stein and Mans Marlind all direct segments. Described as a look at the seedy underbelly of the city of love! The title is a spoof on the romantic portmanteau feature Paris, je t’aime (2006), which featured directors Gus van Sant, Alexander Payne, Tom Tykwer, Walter Salles and the Coen brothers, among others.
After the critical success of the first Theatre Bizarre anthology, it felt only natural to follow yp with another serving of more over-the-top, brutal, visionary, envelope-pushing tales. And this time, carte blanche was given to the creme de la creme of French directors, who were all very happy to take Grand Guignol back to its original birthplace.

If you liked The Divide, you’re in luck. Michael Biehn (Aliens, Terminator) is reteaming with that film’s director, Xavier Gens (Frontiers), for The Farm. It will be the first film in a three picture deal.
Per Variety, “Michael Biehn has joined forces with director Xavier Gens to produce three grindhouse films, launching the partnership with ‘The Farm.’ Pic is being produced by Jennifer Blanc Biehn, Michel Teicher and Avi Federgreen of Federgreen Entertainment/Indiecan Entertainment. Shooting is set to begin in early next year in Canada.”
The film, “centers on a veteran who returns to Texas and must fight his inner demons to save his farm not merely from a greedy corporation but also a horror that threatens to devour the American heartland.” Danielle Harris (Hatchet 2, Among Friends), Jennifer Blanc (The Victim), Michael Eklund (The Divide), Ivan Gonzalez (The Divide) and Courtney B. Vance (Final Destination 5) will star. Also announced under the deal are Up and Down, directed by Carlo Rizzo, and The Predicator, directed by Greg Morin.
Will they stick to the script this time or improv it like in The Divide?
Earlier this week, Anchor Bay released The Divide as a Blu-ray/DVD combo. The film is bleak as all get out, and I imagine many of you will be disturbed and engrossed by the depths many of its characters go to in order to eke out some kind of survival. Director Xavier Gens (Frontiers) does not shy away from dark places.
I recently conducted an interview with Gens via email, and though I obviously couldn’t hear the tone of his voice I was surprised at how [comparatively] lighthearted his answers were. We spoke about his decision to shoot in-sequence, rumors of tension on set, and if – in the event of a nuclear blast – he would prefer to live or die.
In this graphic and violent, post-apocalyptic thriller starring Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Rosanna Arquette, Courtney B. Vance and Lauren German are, “nine strangers—all tenants of a New York high rise apartment—escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building’s bunker-like basement. Trapped for days underground with no hope for rescue, and only unspeakable horrors awaiting them on the other side of the bunker door, the group begins to descend into madness, each turning on one another with physical and psycho-sexual torment. As supplies dwindle, and tensions flare, and they grow increasingly unhinged by their close quarters and hopelessness, each act against one another becomes more depraved than the next. While everyone in the bunker allows themselves to be overcome by desperation and lose their humanity, one survivor holds onto a thin chance for escape even with no promise of salvation on the outside.”

The Divide, the latest film by Xavier Gens, opens not with a whimper but a bang as missiles level New York while Eva (Lauren German) watches the famous skyline turn a cloudy orange. As the residents fly down the stairs to escape their crumbling surroundings, a few manage to make it into the bomb-shelter basement where Mickey (Michael Biehn), the building’s super, is holding up. The handful of survivors – including stepbrothers Josh (Milo Ventimiglia) and Adrien (Ashton Holmes), their friend Bobby (Michael Eklund), a frightened mother and daughter (Rosanna Arquette and Abbey Thickson), Eva’s lesser and more passive half Sam (Ivan Gonzalez), and the selfish Delvin (Courtney B. Vance) – are at first merely grateful to be alive, but slowly succumb to the realization that that they may starve to death and never see the light of day again after men in hazmat suits seal them in, causing extreme levels of paranoia and distrust that reduces them to a caveman-like state of savagery. The gorgeous Maria Bello could be entering James Wan’s House of Horror, Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively.
Bello, who has starred in such films as A History of Violence, Secret Window and Assault on Precinct 13, is currently in talks to star in the film produced by Saw co-creator James Wan (also director of Dead Silence, Insidious and the forthcoming The Warren Files).
We’re also being told that Frontier(s) and The Divide‘s Xavier Gens is no longer directing and that a new helmer is to be announced shortly. Dimension Films is behind the production.
Penned by Max La Bella, “In the aftermath of a horrific massacre, lead Detective, Mark Lewis, and the police department’s psychologist, Dr. Elizabeth Klein, question a suspect for the brutal murder of five college students. THE EVIL MADE HIM DO IT.” READ MORE
Frontier(s) and The Divide director Xavier Gens, who is also in development on James Wan’s House of Horrors, has shared some early concept art from his long gestured adaptation, Cold Skin, which once had 30 Days of Night’s David Slade attached to direct.
“Cold Skin” is the debut novel by Catalan author Albert Sánchez Piñol. The novel chronicles the stay of an unnamed weather official on a remote island in the south Atlantic close to the Antarctic Circle. The film adaptation was written by 28 Weeks Later‘s Jesus Olmo.
“On the edge of the Antarctic Circle, in the years after World War One, a steamship approaches a desolate island far from all shipping lanes. On board is a young man, on his way to assume the post of weather observer, to live in solitude at the end of the earth. But on shore he finds no trace of the man whom he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. For the next twelve months his entire world will consist of a deserted cabin, trees, rocks, silence and the surrounding sea. Then night begins to fall…” READ MORE

I enjoyed my interview with Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss) quite a bit more than I enjoyed The Divide (in theaters this Friday) itself. The film, from Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens, is a deeply bleak post-apocalyptic thriller.
While I have no problem with bleak material, there needs to be something else there – some kind of unifying theme or exceptional storytelling – for any movie to feel complete. And The Divide doesn’t have it. There are some great elements to the film, Xavier Gens’ direction combined with Laurent Bares photography makes for some very impressive atmosphere (especially when you consider that it was shot on a small set in a short amount of time). But the script is a mess. The following interview with Michael Biehn more than hints as to why – much of the script was discarded and large amounts of the film were improv’d (which certainly explains the erratic character work).
That being said, I’m a fan of many of Biehn’s films. He was one of my film heroes as a kid (Kyle Reese and Corporal Hicks – come on!) so I was eager to sit down with him for a quick chat. He’s also one of the best things about the movie.
Unfortunately, before I could ask my first question, he asked me what I thought of The Divide. Caught off guard, I replied “eh…” The video starts right after Biehn asks me to elaborate. We get back on track pretty quick though and touch on various subjects such as the cast “hating each other” and Biehn’s upcoming directorial debut, The Victim.
