You’re Next

In ‘You’re Next’ the Davison family comes under attack from a terrifying group of sadistic murderers during a family reunion getaway. Barricaded in their secluded vacation home, they fight off a barrage of axes, crossbows and machetes from both inside and outside the house. However, the masked killers didn’t count on Erin (Vinson), the young girlfriend of the eldest Davison son whose mysterious past has made her very difficult to kill.

Official: One of the smartest and most terrifying films in years, the film reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped…until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all.

V/H/S/2 (S-VHS)

Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static—white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.

From the demented minds that brought you last year’s V/H/S comes V/H/S/2, an all-new anthology of dread, madness, and gore. This follow-up ventures even further down the demented path blazed by its predecessor, discovering new and terrifying territory in the genre. This is modern horror at its most inventive, shrewdly subverting our expectations about viral videos in ways that are just as satisfying as they are sadistic. The result is the rarest of all tapes—a second generation with no loss of quality.

Another ‘You’re Next’ Animal Invades Los Angeles Bus Shelter Ad!!

Back on Sunday we told you about the coolest viral campaign we’ve seen all year – Lionsgate had printed bus stop ads for The Big Wedding, only they were invaded by one of the “animals” from their forthcoming slasher You’re Next (review here), in theaters August 23.

While the ads had previously been reported across the New York area, an eagle-eyed reader in Culver City, California confirmed that Los Angeles is also being stalked by the killers from Adam Wingard’s You’re Next! Inside we have an insanely cool bus shelter ad for Tyler Perry’s Temptation that reflects yet another “animal” from the film. It’s unclear how old the Temptation photo is as the movie came out end of March, but these ads must have been up for a while. Lionsgate would not return our calls to comment. Special thanks to Bloody reader “Justin K.” for the the image and news tip!

This ‘You’re Next’ Viral Is The Coolest Thing I’ve Seen All Year!!

Update: Another bus shelter ad was spotted in Los Angeles! Lionsgate has just won the year with their absolutely ingenious viral campaign for Adam Wingard’s You’re Next (review), which opens in theaters August 23.

While we’re unaware of how many cities partook, Los Angeles and New York bus stops reportedly carry displays for Lionsgate’s upcoming comedy, The Big Wedding, which reflect one of the “animals” from the hotly anticipated slasher You’re Next!!

Looking at the following image, I can’t tell of there’s an actual reflection or if Lionsgate “printed” the animal on the top layer of the Big Wedding poster; either way, what you’ll see inside is pretty haunting and beyond eye-catching. Take a look and marvel at the brilliance behind Lionsgate’s marketing department. What do ya’ think?

The ‘You’re Next’ Trailer Is Here! And It’s Worth The Wait!!!

It’s funny – a March 28th trailer release for a movie that comes out on August 23rd is still fairly early. At least it’s not late late. Yet, because Lionsgate’s You’re Next has been anticipated for so long (due to the Summit/Lionsgate merger, not due to quality), it feels like it’s been an eternity. A lot of you have been asking us for the trailer for 18 months… so we’re just as stoked as you are that it’s finally here. And it’s great! I dig how the trailer sells the suspense and horror of the film without giving anything else away – there’s still a lot you haven’t seen (it’s relatively spoiler free in that regard). I also dig the moment when the chorus of “Perfect Day” comes back into the mix. From what I gather this is just the beginning of a pretty big marketing push.

[SXSW '13 Interview] AJ Bowen On ‘You’re Next’, ‘Grow Up, Tony Phillips’ And Not “Faking It” Through Horror

AJ Bowen (A Horrible Way To Die) had both You’re Next and Grow Up, Tony Phillips at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, TX. While the first film was one of my favorites of 2011 (and one of my favorites of 2013 – it holds up), you probably need no introduction to it – except for the question many of you ask at this point, “where is the trailer?” The answer to that seems to be that it will be paired with Evil Dead in the first week of April. Update: It’s March 28th for the trailer. I’m going to miss not getting that question every day for 18 months!

The latter film, Grow Up, Tony Phillips, is the 4th directorial effort from genre favorite Emily Hagins (My Sucky Teen Romance). While it’s by no stretch of the imagination a horror film – it is a sweet and poignant look at Halloween and what it means to embrace that holiday in an “age appropriate” manner. In that regard it’s almost a (funny) dramatization of a character that might have appeared in An American Scream. If you’re a fan of Hagins’ earlier work, I’d recommend checking it out regardless of genre – it’s definitely a more polished iteration of that aesthetic.

AJ Bowen plays “Pete” in the film, and the role couldn’t possibly be more different from what he achieves in You’re Next. I caught up with Bowen after the fest wound down to talk about what it was like to have two films there and get his thoughts the delicate nature of moving in and out (and back into) the horror genre. I also tried to scoop him on Ti West’s upcoming Eli Roth produced The Sacrament – but he did an expertly friendly job of shutting me down on that one.

[SXSW '13 Interview] Director Adam Wingard On Making ‘You’re Next’ And His Plans For ‘The Guest’ And ‘Dead Spy Running’!

Lionsgate’s You’re Next screened over the weekend to a packed crowd at this year’s SXSW Festival and, after 18 months of praise, everyone seemed to agree that the film lived up to the hype. One of the reasons behind the film’s creative success is Adam Wingard‘s incredibly assured hand as a director. I’ve always been fond of his work, but You’re Next is unlike anything else currently on his resume – a taut, crowd-pleasing horror film that has a uniquely addictive energy. I sat down with him after the screening to talk about the film’s violence and his approach towards making it feel huge.

[Box Office] ‘Mama’ Has HUGE Opening Weekend! Horror Reigns Again!

Universal released Mama, the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror thriller about a group of feral children raised by something sinister, on Friday and it cleaned up over the weekend. A $10 Million Friday translated into an estimated $28.1 Million dollar weekend ($33.2 if the 4-Day projections hold for the MLK Holiday). That’s a lot of money!

Even if I didn’t totally love the movie (nor did Brad, you can read his review here), there’s plenty to admire about it, particularly the fact that its story is pretty original. And that $33 Million more than doubles its $15M production budget. It had a not great B- cinemascore, but exit polling revealed that audiences liked it more than Texas Chainsaw 3D so expect it to not drop like a rock like that one did.

Now if we can only get this many people to hit the theaters for Evil Dead in April and You’re Next in August!

‘V/H/S’ Is Available On DVD And Blu-ray Today! The Filmmakers Talk About Their Segments!

Magnolia releases V/H/S (write your reviews) DVD/Blu-ray TODAY, December 4th! Extras include deleted scenes, a featurette on the visual effects, a behind the scenes featurette, an AXS TV: A Look at V/H/S feature, a filmmakers’ commentary and trailers. If you’re not into physical media, it’s also available on iTunes – though I’m not sure if all of the extras come with that version.

In the film “When a group of petty criminals is hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room, a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.

To celebrate we’ve got some (in most cases) new/previously unpublished quotes from filmmakers Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Red Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), and Radio Silence.

Adjust Your Tracking! ‘V/H/S/2′ Is Coming!!!

The Hollywood Reporter has just dropped the news that you can expect some fresh new blood (and talent) in S-VHS (formerly V/H/S/2)!!!

Gareth Evans (The Raid; pictured above), Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project, Lovely Molly) & Gregg Hale, Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun) & Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre) are among the new talent directing segments for the franchise. Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way To Die) is returning along with writer/producer Simon Barrett (You’re Next, A Horrible Way To Die), the latter of which will be making his directorial debut on the film.

Per THR, “Some news perfect for Halloween: Gareth Evans, who directed The Raid, and Eduardo Sanchez, the director of The Blair Witch Project and Lovely Molly, are co-writing and co-directing segments of a second installment of ‘V/H/S’, the hit horror anthology that had people fainting at the Sundance Film Festival.

The first movie followed a group of students hired to break into a desolate house to find a lost VHS tape, paving the way for the movie to go into a series of found-footage stories directed by up-and-coming genre filmmakers. The new movie follows a similar structure, with a pair of investigators discovering a tape while looking for a student.

V/H/S 2 is shooting in LA, Maryland, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Indonesia.

Lionsgate Schedules Hotly Anticipated ‘You’re Next’ For August 2013

Well, that took awhile. Presumably, the issue of releasing arose when Lionsgate acquired Summit, leaving few slots for their upcoming horror releases. Now, a year after being sold in a massive bidding war, Collider reports that the Gate will now release in theaters on August 23, 2013.

[Interview] AJ Bowen On Mixing Genres In ‘Rites Of Spring’, Considering Found Footage And Laughing At Joe Swanberg In ‘You’re Next’

Writer/director Padraig Reynolds’ mixed genre kidnapping slasher/creature feature Rites of Spring plays kind of like a modern day From Dusk Till Dawn in that it totally switches gears midway through (not a spoiler, the film tips its hat to this early on). Of course, there aren’t any vampires and the film is much more serious than that early Tarantiono/Rodriguez collaboration. An early kidnapping segment really struck me with its unflinching brutality, as did some of the film’s more “sacrificial” moments. Rites stars AJ Bowen (The Signal, House of the Devil, A Horrible Way to Die, Hatchet 2, You’re Next) who plays embattled kidnapper Ben Geringer.

I recently hopped on the phone with Bowen to chat about how his character in Rites was a welcome break from some of the more thoroughly evil types he’s played. We also talked about his upcoming film Silent Night Of The Living Dead as well as the status of You’re Next. Oh, and we find out if he’s reconsidered his longstanding aversion to doing a found footage film.

In the film, “A group of kidnappers abduct the daughter of a wealthy socialite and hide out in an abandoned school on the edge of town. But feelings of guilt soon overtake the kidnappers, dividing the group and putting their entire plan in jeopardy. The evening further spirals out of control when their poorly chosen hideout becomes a hunting ground for a mysterious creature that requires springtime ritualistic sacrifices.” The creature, “Wormface”, was designed by Aaron Sims (A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child, Wrong Turn, The Mist, I Am Legend, Clash of the Titans, The Thing).

IFC Midnight releases Rites Of Spring July 27 on VOD and in limited theaters. Head inside for the interview! READ MORE

Poster For ‘The ABC’s Of Death’ Spells Out Greatness

Abcsland40212 Poster For The ABCs Of Death Spells Out Greatness

Entertainment Weekly got their hands on the poster for The ABC’s Of Death, and I have to say it’s nothing if not absolutely great. The anthology film features segments from Adam Wingard (You’re Next), Ti West (The Innkeepers), Yoshihiro Nishimur (Tokyo Gore Police), Ben Wheatley (Kill List) and 23 other notable horror directors. I can’t wait to see it.

The ABC’s Of Death is a “feature film produced by Ant Timpson & Tim League. A project made up of 26 individual chapters by 26 directors that showcase death in all its wondrous and brutal beauty. Established directors and some of the most gifted emerging directors will make up the diverse roster of creative talent that will showcase twenty-six tales of mortality, beginning with the letter A and ending with the letter Z.

This will be a celebration of death in all its forms. From the shocking and exotic through to the banal and droll. The spectrum of cause will run from the accidental through to murder most foul. It is up to each director to interpret the letter (word) they are assigned. They have 6 months, 6 weeks and 6 days to finish their short tale on death.

Dear Filmmakers: Subvert A Genre All You Want, But You Have To Respect It First.

Dear Filmmakers: Subvert A Genre All You Want, But You Have To Respect It First.

A little while ago I tossed up an article about the sale of Black Rock at Sundance. In fact, it should be the piece right below this one.

Right after doing so I saw that Devin Faraci, one of my favorite critics, had already filed his review of the film over at Badass Digest so I headed over there to check it out. You can do the same by clicking here.

Now I’m gonna state in bold letters that I have not seen Black Rock. For all I know it could become my favorite movie of 2012. I don’t always agree with Devin (maybe 70% of the time), but he’s one of a handful of about 5 or 6 critics whose reviews are my “go-tos” when I’m deciding what films to spend my time or money on as a consumer (I don’t always see everything for free, especially non-horror stuff). Whether or not I ultimately agree with his take on something, he’s got a knack for thoroughly explaining the reasoning behind his reactions that’s in a language I can relate to.

So I was surprised to come across a couple lines in his piece on Black Rock that echoed something that’s been on my mind for sometime in regard to genre and people who think they’re slumming in it.

Hit the jump to see what I’m talking about. READ MORE

[Sundance 12]: V/H/S Filmmaker Ti West On The Innkeepers And Reinvigorating Found Footage!

Ti West has been building himself up as a brand name the past few years by writing and directing (and editing) a series of horror films that pull you into their unique atmosphere and let you spend time with their characters before turning the scares up to full volume. House Of The Devil gained him a new loyal fan base and The Innkeepers (which hits theaters on February 3rd) is sure to expand it.

As one of the writers and directors of V/H/S – a found footage movie that reinvigorates the stagnant genre – he was able to challenge himself yet again by eschewing his more traditionally formal cinematic aesthetic.

In the film, “When a group of misfits is hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.
