[News Bites] ‘Wolf Creek 2′ Begins Production; Zac Efron Becomes ‘The Falling’; See Jodie Foster In ‘Elysium’; New ‘Last Exorcism’ TV Spot

Kicking off this massive afternoon of news, Zac Efron, pictured, and Akiva Goldsman are teaming up for a mystery supernatural project at Warner Bros. titled The Falling, says THR. Efron will star in the film and produce via his Warners-based Ninjas Runnin’ Wild Productions and Goldsman’s Weed Road banner. Also on board to produce are husband-and-wife team Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold of Safehouse Pictures. Every effort is being made to protect the logline of the project, which is being described as “an edgy thriller centering around an otherworldly being.” The idea originated within the studio, which then presented it Goldsman and Efron. Goldsman and Harold, the screenwriter who worked on Warners’ upcoming Tom Cruise sci-fi movie All You Need Is Kill, then hammered out a story.

Simply Jodie has leaked out a trio of looks at Jodie Foster in Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, in theaters August 9. “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) will stop at nothing to preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium – but that doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. Max (Matt Damon) agrees to take on a life-threatening mission, one that could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Non-News Of The Day: ‘Vlad’ Director Excited About His Own Film

All has been quiet on Summit’s Vlad – which was in development before the studio’s public announcement in late 2009 – until today, when MTV published information from an interview they conducted with director Anthony Mandler last week.

Recently signing onto Die In A Gunfight, the music video helmer said that he is “deep into ‘Vlad,’ the origin story of Dracula… I think kind of shortly things are going to start unfolding.” He also added that he “[has] a rewrite that the story loves (?) and we’re optimistic as to our casting. I can’t talk about that yet.

An informal announcement about making an announcement. Incredible.

Zac Efron has been cast in Die In A Gunfight, leading some to believe that the up-and-comer (who I spotted in an episode of Firefly yesterday) might have a part in Vlad after Mandler compared the future of the star’s career to that of Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp’s. Only time will tell.

Breaking: How to Ruin ‘Akira’, or How to Break Zac Efron?

BREAKING: My heart just sank deep, deep into the depths of hell as I just learned that Zac Efron was just offered the LEAD role in Allen and Albert Hughes’ Akira adaptation. “Akira” originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. The story was set in a neon-lit futuristic post-nuclear war “New Tokyo” in 2019 where a teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his latent powers. The gang’s leader must find a way to stop the ensuing swathe of destruction. Now, there are two lead roles in the original Manga/animated feature: Shotaro Kaneda (the gang leader) and Tetsuo Shima, the black sheep of the gang who gets caught up in the government experiment (obviously to be renamed in the American New York version). Efron would play the role of the biker “Kaneda Shim”. My immediate thoughts were that this casting will either ruin the movie — or maybe this could be the role that breaks Efron out of the teen-heartthrob subculture and into the mainstream.
