Even though I’ve read nearly all the comics (I’m a bit behind), I feel like I’m the sole hater of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” television series. It’s frustrating that people aren’t seeing what I’m seeing, but I also respect that many of you guys love it. So, while I’d love to see AMC take the show in a new direction, or even reboot it the right way, the cabler promises that there’s no end in sight for the zombie series (unless you count deleting the series from your DVR).
AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan said Wednesday that “Breaking Bad,” which ends its run next year, and “Mad Men,” which ends the year after that, are a couple of the best shows in the history of television, and that he sees no end in sight to “The Walking Dead,” says THR.
“The Walking Dead” is in just its third season and has a lot more to go.
“We hope that zombies live forever, and we’ve just begun to find out what the post-apocalyptic world is like,” said Sapan, “so that we’ll be sitting here at the Barclays conference in 2022 discussing the fact that “Walking Dead” is not over … at that point, I think any one of the companies will have replaced the United States government and we’ll be in a complete free enterprise world in which there are no nations.”
I’ve grown incredibly frustrated with AMC’s treatment of the series, and their inability to openly acknowledge the criticism. Because of the strong ratings, they continue to rub it in our noses that they know what’s best. This doesn’t mean the show has to be bad, in fact, eventually people will catch on. Much like each season before, I continue to keep faith alive that they’ll right the ship and get things on the correct course – only this time they have to convince me to start watching again… READ MORE

The folks at Antarctic Press are developing a zombie themed deck of cards featuring illustrations from artist Brian Denham (“Iron Man”, “Green Hornet”, “X-Files”, “Angel”). While the deck can be used to play any classic card game, they have also developed a new game to go along with the zombie theme. They have taken to Kickstarter for “The Ultimate Zombie Playing Cards Deck” to seek crowd funding and the backing options are pretty sweet. You can pick up a deck for under ten bucks, or you can go all out to get your hands on some original artwork. READ MORE

Here’s a Saturday morning cartoon treat from your pals at Bloody Disgusting!
While some of you may already be as obsessed as I am with Cartoon Network’s “Regular Show,” many of you may not be aware of its pure awesomeness. The show, now on Netflix Instant, has me revisiting all the previous seasons, which is where I came across this 2011 classic.
In the second season’s 19th episode “Grave Sights”, Mordecai and Rigby accidentally raise the dead during a movie night in the cemetery. The episode shows an insane amount of love for the horror genre, touching on our obsession over renting videos, our knowledge of the genre, how we collect rare gems and attend various conventions. It even gives an homage to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise with the “incredibly rare” director’s cut of “Zombocalypse.”
This is a very special 10 minutes of cartoon that should go perfect with your Count Chocula cereal this Saturday morning. Tell us what you think! READ MORE

In the record breaking third season, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his fellow survivors continue to seek refuge in a desolate and post-apocalyptic world and soon discover that there are greater forces to fear than just the walking dead. The struggle to survive has never been so perilous. “Night of the Living Dead Live” has just started its limited run in Toronto, Ontario at the Theatre Passe Muraille till Sunday May 19th. It’s brought to you by the good folks at Nictophobia Films and Co-Writer/Director Christopher Bond, who brought us the super-fun “Evil Dead: The Musical” a few years back. Catch it if you can! It’s well worth the effort.
In 1968, a little indie horror film by the name of Night of the Living Dead introduced moviegoers to a brand new monster; the zombie or as they were referred to by the filmmakers; the ghoul. Now, the zombie has been seen before in such films as I Walk with a Zombie and White Zombie but Co-Writer/Director George A. Romero redefined them not only by their look and performance but as well as their taste in food. NOTLD set such a strong template that even 45 years later, we’re still smitten by them. Presently Zombies are bigger than ever. From countless video games (Dead Island, Resident Evil 6), films (World War Z, Zombieland), television (The Walking Dead) to even zombie walks all across the globe, they’re a permanent fixture in pop culture. Released today from Broadway Books (a division of Random House Publishing) is Peter Clines’ “Ex-Patriots”, the sequel to his hit novel, “Ex-Heroes”. The series blends together elements of zombie and superhero fiction and has been called, “The Avengers meets The Walking Dead with a large order of epic served on the side”. “Ex-Patriots” follows the same superhero team as the first novel, but it’s an easy place to jump on board if you’re new to the series. Check out an exclusive excerpt from the novel below. READ MORE
“Ex-Patriots” is the follow up to Peter Clines’ hit novel”Ex-Heroes”, and once again he brings you to a post zombie-apocalypse Hollywood for a genre meshing tale of horror and heroics. Clines first published the books through the horror publisher Permuted Press, but they have since become cult classics and are now being re-printed by Random House.
“Ex-Patriots” follows the same team from the first novel, though it’s still a perfectly fine place to jump on board. The novel begins two years after the plague of ex-humans has destroyed mankind. Since then, St. George, his team of heroes, and a few remaining humans, fight to stay alive in Los Angeles at their film-studio-turned-fortress, the Mount.
“Ex-Patriots” will be on sale on April 23, 2013. READ MORE
28 Months Later isn’t an impossibility, but there certainly aren’t any plans for it right now. 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Trance director Danny Boyle recently spoke to Wired and he seemed fairly uninterested in pursuing the series – saying that there’s a only 40/60 chance of it getting made.
“ Who would have thought? I don’t like zombie movies. I never did. We took a genre and fucked with it. Zombie aficionados, they’re quite precious with all their rules. Like with running: “They don’t do that!” Of course there are so many manifestations of zombies now, the rule book has gone out the window. I saw one episode of The Walking Dead, and it was very gripping. But the zombies were stumbling around again, which I hate. Given what we’ve just been talking about, it’s very difficult to know whether zombies are overexposed now as a concept. So it’s 40/60 whether it happens or not.”
Lest you despair, it’s not completely off the table. “But we did have an idea of where to set it and what it might be about.”
Still, you know – probably not.
The Battery written, directed and starring Jeremy Gardner is an emotional 100 minutes and 23 seconds of a zombie film. Like most zombie films, the story revolves around the humans involved. In this case it’s baseball players Ben (Gardner) and Mickey (Adam Cronheim). The two have been on the run from zombies for some time, and are surviving well. While Ben has to kill any of the undead that cross their path, it’s ok, because he is happy to do so as he has Mickey as a companion in the desolate world, which they now live. However, everything changes when the two find a set of walkie talkies. Soon they hear a radio transmission and the voice of a woman, Annie. Mickey becomes obsessed with Annie, which literally leads the friends down a path they shouldn’t travel.
I’ve reviewed a lot of movies for Bloody-Disgusting. I’ve reviewed a lot of bad movies, at that. And I’ve reviewed a lot of movies made on huge budgets, over a long period of time, that are just awful.
Check out these specs:
Shot On: DSLR (Canon 5D Mark ii) with Zeiss Lenses
Edited With: Adobe Premiere on a Windows PC
Budget: $6,000
Shoot Length: 16 days
The Battery is good. It’s damn good. For everything listed above, this movie is outrageously, insanely good. I went into this movie not reading the press kit info and watched it for what it was. Afterwards, I literally clapped and yelled “Brav-f***ing-O!” when I saw the specs. Jeremy Gardner, make more movies.
It isn’t just the above information that makes The Battery good. It’s the attention to detail. Ben and Mickey have been wandering, scavenging, living life the best way they can. Mickey has been longing for that normality they once had. The moment he hears Annie, you see that click inside him. The horrid longing for a woman and he’s hooked. You feel for Mickey in that moment. He just wants what he once had. While he is dreaming of that world, Ben has resigned to their apocalyptic reality. He ensures that Annie is not the gorgeous image inside Mickey’s head.
Mickey’s anguish is perfectly summed up not much later in the film. While taking a nap in the car – and with Ben nowhere around – Mickey is attacked by a female zombie. For a moment he thinks to call for help, but as the zombie girl presses her breasts against the car window, Mickey’s instincts turn on. And you can’t blame him. With Annie’s voice in his head, there is no reason he wouldn’t immediately do what he does. Gardner sets up a completely plausible situation in a completely realistic vision of an apocalyptic world.
Even better, earlier in the film, the two friends find toothbrushes and toothpaste. For a minute we see their ecstasy in the act of simply brushing their teeth. At first I felt the use of music and somewhat montage-like episodes were long running, however, after rethinking it – everything that happens in those long scenes is exactly what survivors would be doing. Whether it be brushing their teeth, or draining the juice from canned chicken to later use for hydration, the little details within The Battery are spot on.
The Battery proves something about the depths of the horror genre. There is very little gore, there is very little action – however the cinematic quality and the emotionally charged atmosphere are sculpted in the right manor to make it an excellent example of what can truly be considered horror. The film is set to premiere with a worldwide digital release in June. I eagerly await its debut. It is deserving of all the positive publicity it will receive.
Season 3 of “The Walking Dead” is a distant memory. Well, not distant, but I get the sense that a lot of you would like to go ahead and forget that finale. But still, one of the things the show does right are its’ expert makeup and visual/cg effects.
To that effect, Stargate Studios has uploaded a video taking a quick look at how some of the season’s messiest kills were orchestrated. Even better? It’s scored to NIN’s “Heresy.”
