Widows (2018, Steve McQueen)

Atmosphere

Set in contemporary Chicago, amidst a time of turmoil, four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities, take fate into their own hands, and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.

It's been a while since we had a big, 90's-esque crime thriller with a cast like this, and with Steve McQueen at the helm you can bet your ass I will be there day one. Looks like his most accessible film to date, but that doesn't concern me too much because it has the potential to be a progression in his career and it couldn't happen to a better filmmaker.

Run of the mill movie. Nothing special here, it’ll come a go without anyone noticing. And of course Michelle Rodriquez is in it, she still thinks she has to prove she can be a “tough” character.

Atmosphere

What makes you so sure this will "come and go"? McQueen is a highly respected filmmaker, and the pedigree of the cast can't be underestimated (not to mention most of them are awards darlings).

Fair enough if you're not interested, but this is definitely not going to just fly under the radar.

It does nothing special to make it stand out amongst other action movies. It’ll be lucky that it’s not eclipsed by some big budget spotfest when it hits the big screen. It’s best bet is to release a weekend when nothing else is coming out, forces people to see it.

Here’s a far more interesting Bank robbing film. Won’t do shit at the box office but it’s infinitely more interesting then a run of the mill Set it Off redux.

Lol I'm not defending Michelle Rodriguez but she's not proving anything. That's the type of role she is and will always be given. She's not an aspiring character actor doing gimmick action roles to get by, that's who she is. May as well say Vin Diesel is still trying to prove that he's tough.

Atmosphere

People frown over Hollywood typecasting, but it doesn't always have to be a negative thing. There's actually something quite savvy about a performer knowing their limits and strengths and sticking to projects that suit them. Good for her for carving out a niche for herself and making it last this long.
