IFC Renews “Stan Against Evil” for Third Season

Just a couple months after the second season came to a close, we’ve learned tonight that IFC has given the green light to a third season of horror series “Stan Against Evil”!

Via Deadline, Season 3 will premiere this coming Fall.

“Created by Dana Gould and starring John C. McGinley and Janet Varney, Stan Against Evil follows Stan Miller (McGinley), the perpetually disgruntled former sheriff of a small New England town, and Evie Barret (Varney), his younger, more spirited successor, and how the two are forced into an unlikely alliance upon realizing their sleepy little town is the subject of a 300-year-old demonic curse. Willard’s Mill, it turns out, was the sight of a massive 17th century witch burning and as such, Stan and Evie are forced into battle against demons, witches, haunted ponies, giant piglets, evil babies, you name it, all while trying to bridge their chasm-wide personal differences.

Season 2 wrapped in November with Stan (McGinley) and Evie (Varney) accidentally opening a portal into the past, allowing the 17th century demons to create new mayhem in their quaint town of Willard’s Mill.”

I’ve really gotta catch up with that show (I’ve seen the first 4 episodes of season 1) as it’s pretty good for what it is.
Some say it’s a rip off of AvED – it’s not, it’s just similar in tone, perhaps imagine AvED with a little Grimm mixed in.
No matter what though, it’s good that we have a few decent horror shows at the moment – we’re being spoiled.
Good to see S3 is on the way – now, time to catch up!

Don’t worry. With 6 episodes a season 30 minutes each it will take no time at all. They need to extend the episodes and the time.

      • Saturn

        It’s 8 episodes per season.
Still, like you say, they are short episodes so it’ll be pretty easy to do each season in one sitting.
It’s just finding the time to sit down to them.

Yeah very true, even though I had already seen both seasons of ‘AvED’, when the news broke on here that both seasons were on Netflix I went and knocked both seasons out in one day. There is something a little more convenient with 30 minute episodes.

          • Saturn

I’m counting the days until the new season of AvED begins so I can cram in the movies (including the remake, Within The Woods & The Musical) and both seasons before it begins.
Not that I need an excuse to do that, but it’s nice to have a refresher, to make sure I haven’t forgotten owt (yeah right!).

My main gripe with the length of the show is that it’s a week between episodes – I’d prefer it if it were done ala Netflix, all the episodes available at the same time so I can binge watch.

          • Necro

True, a whole week for a half hour. I guess we can be glad it’s on something like Starz instead of NBC or something! No commercials, that would drive me insane, hell they do now when I’m just trying to simply watch sports or something.

          • LastingDose

Dvr it then binge watch it

          • Saturn

That would be something I could do, but the problem is that if I decided to wait until it’s all been on to watch it in one go, the internet would spoil it.
            Probably BD itself!

The episode length is a problem to me. It’s all a bit too rushed.
The amount of episodes is fine imo.

        • Saturn

Personally I don’t mind the shorter episode lengths, but perhaps 45 minutes would be better.

This guy gets it. I was so sure this was going to be like an Asylum version of Ash vs Evil Dead, but it really isn’t. Real happy with news of a third season!

    • NixEclips

Stan feels like ED2 and Ash feels like Army, to me. I’m burnt out on Ash’s show, so I’m glad Stan is back.

  • Tronald Dump

stan against evil vs ash vs evil dead

    • Saturn

A cross-over arc could be quite fun – perhaps Ash can misread from the damn book (again) and end up with Stan, who has to team up with Ash to defeat an evil bigger evil than either has ever face, before helping Ash get back home.
The joke could be that Ash believes he’s in another universe, but turns out he’s still same planet, same time frame, and all he needs is bus fare home!

  • Necro

I still haven’t watched this! Well now I have two seasons to binge watch! I guess it’s good to wait sometimes.

    • Saturn

If you like AvED then you will probably love it.

      • Necro

Ok, another thing is I’m a huge John C. McKinley fan and I just don’t know why I haven’t checked this out yet. Did you see ‘The Belko Experiment’ yet?

        • Saturn

          Belko, yeah.
Nothing groundbreaking but I had a good time with it and will revisit it at some stage in the future. I do hope that a sequel happens, as the movie did leave it open for an expanded world.

As it’s been mentioned below, some of the episodes do feel a bit rushed, which can sometimes lead to it feeling off or lopsided, it’s difficult to explain exactly.

I love the show, the chemistry between the leads is great but McGinley steals almost every scene.

I’d love for it to get a longer runtime or season run/length of renewal for a few seasons so they can really plan some great things.

I’ve just binged Season 1, and have season 2 ready to go. Season 1 was okay. Very weak main villain. It’s entertaining enough, especially Miller and his daughter.

It’s not AvsED quality but worth the time.

  • Oliver Riddle

    It’s a watchable show

  • LastingDose

Sweet – this show is hilarious

  • American Atheist

It kind of sucks this show is going to last longer than Ash v Evil Dead. Ash is a far superior show.

    • AdamX

It’s ok to like both. Bruce Campbell and John C. McGinley are national treasures so them being on quality programming is something to celebrate.

      • American Atheist

I agree it’s cool to like both. It just sucks that this will be the final season of Ash v Evil Dead because Starz doesn’t want to support it unlike IFC continuing to support Stan Against Evil. McGinley is great but it feels way too similar to Ash v Evil Dead. Like a cheap knock off. I’m happy for McGinley’s success.

        • Rick-Taylor

I haven’t been following the drama behind the scenes. Is it possible for IFC to take up Ash and continue with both shows? I think the dichotomy would help both series’.

    • Kane

i like both but prefer stan. sure its in the same vein but the humor is far superior imo… i love that raw heavy hitting shit society needs laid among them these days

  • Brad Tyler

I’d like to see this show as it looks pretty good fun. But it’s never aired in the UK and there’s no Bluray release anywhere. Seems a shame!
