In theaters May 16, Warner Bros. and Legendary shared this first clip from Godzilla, which shows MUTO swopping in for battle with Godzilla.

From visionary new director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) comes a powerful story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the awe-inspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenseless.

Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Johnson, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, Richard T. Jones, Sally Hawkins, Akira Takarada, Victor Rasuk, Yuki Morita, and C.J. Adams star in the pic rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence…

  • WhoreWhisperer

You could almost jerk to some of these clips.

    • Better Reviewer than Langager

      Almost?

      • WhoreWhisperer

OK, I did jerk a couple of times.

      • WhoreWhisperer

OK, I did jerk a couple of times.

  • Ress EZ

GODZILLA LOOKS BADASS!!! To me, it looks more like the bad guy than the good guy!

  • SmileyOfChaos

My interest in this movie just went from none to pretty damn interested.

  • bibleverse1

I am more interested now than I was before.

  • Erik N

its rodan not muto, who the hell is muto anyways?

    • curtis yeomans

Yep. I was like WTF? Whats a MUTO?

      • http://moviepilot.com/desolateearth K. Lee Adams

“Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism”. Or so they say in a new clip!

        • curtis yeomans

OK – that makes some sense.

          • http://moviepilot.com/desolateearth K. Lee Adams

Happy to help! You know, if it did help. Haha.

    • J Jett

it’s not Rodan. no offense but if you don’t know what you’re talking about don’t go around making such declarations. you’re wrong. it’s not Rodan.

      • viveca pomeroy

People are being so pedantic about this. It’s a freaking flying kaiju in a Godzilla movie. They couldn’t pay out enough for the right to Rodan or Varan or Mothra, no. But it’s basically an homage to all of them so get your knickers untwisted.

    • http://moviepilot.com/desolateearth K. Lee Adams

From what I’ve heard they only have the rights to use Godzilla himself and so the other 2 monsters are entirely new creations, known as M.U.T.O.S. I’m not sure if this is correct but on another site someone said it stood for “Massive Unidentified Target Organism”. Apparently they read it in a leaked version of the script. Like I said I don’t know if it’s accurate. I imagine they’ll explain it in the movie, though.

      • J Jett

K.Lee Adams, in another released clip (this site hasn’t posted it for some lazy reason) the military guy says the full name the humans have given the bat creature (it’s what you said).

also it’s the male creatures that can fly/have wings. the females do not and can only crawl (like a bat).

        • http://moviepilot.com/desolateearth K. Lee Adams

Thanks for the info! I guess that means we have one male creature (the flying one) and one female (the four legged crawling one). My only concern is that they look big until Godzilla shows up. Then they look quite small by comparison. It seems like they won’t stand much of a chance against Godzilla unless they’re bigger than they appear or they’re just plain bad ass creatures who can hold their own. Have to wait and see!

looks like an updated more chillin version of rodan, sort like a homage.

  • tedh754

In one of the other clips online, David Straitharn lets us know that MUTO is an acronym.
Something Something Terrestrial Organism. You can find it if you go to imdb and look under news articles for Godzilla.

    • Bender

      Massive, unidentified.

  • tedh754

I’ll be 60 in a few months, I was born in 1954 when the original came out, and I am totally jazzed about this movie. Maybe because of that 1998 fiasco…

  • J Jett

the only part of this clip that is off/odd to me is…so where was Godzilla hiding at? he all of a sudden just appears from below the street?

    • http://youtube.com/damienjohn DamienJohn

      Perhaps he was just crouched?

    • amol

maybe he was taking a nap and heard someone entering in his lawn.

  • zombie84_41

This is going to be brilliant I loved how godzilla raises and comes out of nowhere. everyone is like oh fuck one monster then run to see oh fuck another monster run.

  • http://moviepilot.com/desolateearth K. Lee Adams

Haha, true. Yeah, I saw that the second synopsis said something about Godzilla rising to face an ancient enemy. And my description was off by one word. M.U.T.O. is actually “Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism”, which is stated by David Strathairn’s character in a new clip.

  • WoWed

yeah, thanks Godzilla. you owe me some pants.
