[Kill of the Week] Axed Down the Middle in ‘Wrong Turn 2’

Every week, we spotlight a kill that we just can’t get enough of. This is Kill of the Week.

Here on Bloody Disgusting we’re big fans of Joe Lynch, whose new (and quite possibly best) film Mayhem (read our review) is now playing in limited theaters alongside a VOD release. Samara Weaving and “The Walking Dead” star Steven Yeun go on a bloody rampage through an office building in Lynch’s latest, and oh boy is it a fun one.

But 10 years before Lynch unleashed Mayhem, he took a Wrong Turn.

Lynch, an untested director at the time, was the man tasked with directing Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, released in 2007 as a sequel to the 2003 film. And with his debut feature, Lynch wasted absolutely no time winning over our gore-loving hearts and showing just what kind of filmmaker he was.

Within the first six minutes of Wrong Turn 2, “American Idol” contestant Kimberly Caldwell plays a version of herself in a sequence that instantly made me a fan of both Lynch and the film. Driving through West Virginia, Caldwell’s character hits a man while distracted by her phone, pulling over to the side of the road to check on him. This proves to be a life-ending mistake, as the man is a cannibal… and his family is not far behind.

After the man gruesomely bites her lip off, his three-fingered brother slams an axe directly into the top of Kimberly’s head, splitting her clean down the middle. Her guts spill out on the road, and the brothers each grab a side and drag her carcass away.

Sequels are rarely better than the first film. But Wrong Turn 2 defied those odds.

This movie was so bad it was awesome! Gotta agree with this kill. I only wish I could see the same thing happen to ALL American Idol contestants on the big screen!

Loved this film and the kill! Sadly though after this film the whole franchise pretty much hit a ‘Dead End’ with the array of shitty sequels that followed.

      agreed 10000%.

I still say the first was the best, but this was still great too. I’m disappointed that Lynch didn’t direct the 3rd, which would’ve explained why the murderous cannibals were never taken care of by the authorities.

I’ve seen this type of kill in other films and I have to say that this one is the best split down the middle ive seen

i fucking LOVE this kill! it’s so over-the-top ridiculous but it’s also so awesome at the same time!

Fun movie. Way better than the first..even though the acting sucks. But the gore is superb.

The best Wrong Turn movie for me. Besides this amazing death scene, I also love the scene where an ax hits a character’s head when you least expect it.

    No complaints here.
I loved this brutal kill !!

Liked this better than I expected to. Good kills, good pacing, terrific score…

I was able to pick up Wrong Turn 1-5 dvds at used movie store for 5 dollars. 2 was by far the best but overall all 5 were a great purchase for the price.

That’s not bad at all. If I saw that, I would probably buy it too, even if I didn’t care for the sequels after 2

Loved this movie, I havent seen Mayhem yet, but I have been disappointed with everything Lynch has done since. Wish he spent more time on making good films instead of goofing off with Adam Green (another guy with a spotty record).

Parts 1 and 2 were awesome films. And that blonde was smoking hot.

speaking of Joe Lynch/WRONG TURN 2, i just watched Lynch’s MAYHEM and it’s really good! it’s fast paced, has some good blood/gore, has a really good cast, etc.
it’s a trillion time better than BELKO EXPERIMENT imo. i love SEVERANCE more but it’s pretty close to be as enjoyable as that film.

Stan winston directed the first one. One and two were fkn awesome. The rest have been shit. Henry rollins was in two also.

This. I remember seeing 3 based on the strength of 2, which I enjoyed far more than 1. I sat through 3 thinking “Oh god this series is going to shit now…”

I recently bought the Wrong Turn 1-5 dvd box set for $5 🙂

WT 1 & 2 are the best and 4 is okay but parts 3 & 5 are rubbish.

    • MrX13

Everything after 2 were rubbish. But I did like Bloodlines…for some reason. I think it was the ending. Part 4 was ok but the ending was stupid **SPOILER** how could you not see that barbwire fence while riding that snowmobile. It they would have made a slight right, they could have made it to the road and survived. I had to rewind that part several times.

One of the best kills in the series! First WT and WT2 were the best in the series, after that, it fell way hard but I enjoyed watching the kills, some were creative and some were plain dumb. Overall, I rather have the first two on BluRay
