‘Annihilation’ Brings ‘Alien’ and ‘Contact’ to Earth! [Trailer]

We already gushed over the first trailer for Ex Machina director Alex Garland‘s Annihilation, which took us into this dream-like sci-fi horror nightmare that harkens back to all sorts of genre films like Jurassic Park, Predator, and even Contact. The new trailer is even better, revealing a heavy Alien/Aliens inspiration from the set design to weaponry, not to mention the film carrying an alien monster intent on creating destroying everything in its path.

In his new film, Natalie Portman (V for Vendetta, Black Swan) plays a biologist who signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply. “[She] finds a very strange, dream-like, surrealist landscape, and goes deeper and deeper into that world, and also into that mindset,” Garland told EW when initially announced.

Jennifer Jason Leigh (Amityville: The Awakening, The Hateful Eight, “Twin Peaks”), Tuva Novotny, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson (Creed, When a Stranger Calls) costar as her fellow team members, while Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) plays Portman’s husband.

Here’s the brand new trailer that’s as frightening as it is stunning.  Paramount will release it in theaters on February 23, 2018, the same day as CBS Films’ horror pic Winchester.

Aw man, it shows too much!

    • Not necessarily. It’s a lot of teases but I’m loving how it is expanding upon the novel (and also pulling from the sequel). There’s plenty more that they don’t show though!

Well I’m glad to hear that! Just was hoping not to have the creatures revealed in the trailer. Still can’t wait 🙂

        • Weirdly enough the first book only has one “creature” and it’s nothing seen in the trailer. It’s a super short book (208 pages), so there’s plenty of room for the film to expand upon the mythology.

          • Barry El Beardo

Yeh from how she describes the ‘creature’ in the first trailer, definitely doesn’t match up with what she says.
Might have to give the book a read 🙂

I’m trying to make sense of the trailer – is it an alien that creates a world to experiment with Earth genetics? If not, it should be, and I’ll take my 10% cut when that gets made.

    • Bryano

It’s never very clear in the book what is going on exactly, I’m guessing the movie will be the same. Probably won’t be great for people who hate ambiguity.

I have high hopes especially from the guy who directed Ex Machina and wrote 28 Days Later.

    • Necro

You know Jay I bet you I ALMOST watched ‘Ex-Machina’ at least a dozen times and never hit play. I’m assuming it’s good?

      • Saturn

I’m the same with Ex-Machina, I meant to see it at the cinema but didn’t get around to it, so I bought the dvd of it quite some time ago with plans to watch it at the following weekend, but never got around to it.
I really should give it a blast after Xmas is done with.
I’m not saying which Xmas though…..

        • Creepshow

Get on that son. It’s a great flick.

      • Creepshow

        Ex Machina is excellent.

        • Necro

          Ok sounds good!

      • Jay Bennett

Its a slow burn, but so fucking good, not a horror movie but its filled of unnerving aspects and great performances

        • Necro

          Sounds good!

    • Yakushiji Tenzen

And wrote The Beach as well, an excellent novel.

      • Jay Bennett

Noticed that on the bottom of his imdb a while back, Ill check it out!

  • Necro

I’ve still yet to see his first film ‘Ex-Machina’, this looks pretty wild and hopefully gets an appropriate rating. There is only one thing that immediately concerns me about this and that’s the pacing of this.

    • Bryano

Ex Machina is excellent in my opinion. It’s a slow-burner, but every shot is gorgeous and it’s well directed. I highly recommend it.

  • Gross Angeles

This looks superb. It even seems to touch on same sort of vibe as Ridley Scott’s Prometheus/Covenant where the alien DNA bonds with its host… And did you see the walls where she’s firing off that “pulse rifle” at the end?! Straight out of Giger’s world. But it looks fresh still rather than just a rip-off. Can’t wait for this! / Nathan @grossangeles:disqus

definitely noticed the ALIEN-esque hive type walls! even though it was shown clearer in the earlier released teaser for this film i love the beautiful/horrific shot of a torn apart(?) person mixed with plant life that plastered against the wall of the empty swimming pool (shown for a quick second in this trailer).

  • The chicken man

Looks good, but, Natalie Portman? Hollywood really needs to stop using these overdone actors.

  • J Jett

this looks fucking awesome! i can’t wait! i don’t know if this will be in the actual movie but i love the dissonant, creepy music that plays when it shows “the shimmer”.

  • Man’s Ruin

If you enjoy the film, you should seek out the work of Jeff VanderMeer, the author of all three novels of the trilogy. I have deeply enjoyed his Ambergris novels and stories, and recommend them highly. The shorter works have been published several times under the title “City of Saints and Madmen”, and that is an excellent starting point. You’ll never look at mushrooms the same way.

    • J Jett

“You’ll never look at mushrooms the same way”….

that has me very intrigued! 🙂

  • Kyle Cole

    Looks awesome!!

i just read that this movie will be released onto Netflix 17 days after it’s released to theaters in the U.S., China & Canada (i assume all on the same day). apparently Alex Garland is not too happy about this. here’s the article….

    • It’s a shame this movie was also switched around from the original plot, i hate when hollywood does this. I hope the movie isn’t all over the place, it looks like it could be.

  • NOCC Monkey

I think it looks like it could be amazing. I hope it turns out to be as good as the vibe the trailer gives.

  • Getting The Descent vibes from this because of the female cast, I have high hopes!
