‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ Holiday Promo is a Cruel Joke

A24 released a clip/promotional trailer for the home video release of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer that’s not only hilarious, but also pretty cruel.

The footage is from a scene in the movie where Kim (Raffey Cassidy), the daughter of Colin Farrell‘s character, is singing “Ring Christmas Bells (Carol of the Bells)” with her choir. As the camera pushes in closer and closer, the trailer reads “Bring home a gift for the entire family.” It’s hilarious because it’s not a fun movie and probably one of the worst “gifts” you could ever bring home to the entire family. I love the thought that someone is going to see this and pick it up for the entire family to watch this holiday season. Excellent marketing by A24.

With that said, The Killing of a Sacred Deer is astounding. See it immediately.

Excellent film. Didn’t quite affect me the same as The Lobster, but I still loved it.

Very overrated. Forced and awkward “style.” Easily forgettable.

I think the title would prevent innocent bystanders from being destroyed. Add Lathigos to the list of filmmakers making films with a capital F. I found a pleasant thematic similarity between Deer and Jovanka Vuckovic‘s segment, The Box, from the anthology film XX.

  • Carl Chrystan

Saw it on Sunday and loved it. Would be pretty funny if someone gave it a go, thinking it was something else. When they start seeing a woman masturbating her husband’s work colleague so he gives confidential information out, they’ll realise this is no ‘Miracle on 34th Street’!

  • James Allard

My God, that child has absolutely beautiful eyes.
What a phenomenal version of that old carol.
    Family fun for everyone!
