Please, save the hypocritical “my opinion” grand-standing and self-defense bit for a time when you aren’t actively engaging in a debate with someone.

And if you think Hellsing portrays “the horror of war”? Lol. Apparently to you anything with violence must be portraying “the horrors of war”.

Isn’t it good that we live in a world where everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Well at least the part of the world I preside in that is. You are saying that for Hellsing to be horror the protagonist has to in peril at some point but what about the horrors of war it portrays, the horror of damnation and the horror of immortality. That’s where the true horror of vampire movies lay, in the departure from humanity. Soulless, undead, forever damn to dwell in darkness and feed of the living. No family, friends or true love. Only darkness, death and eternal damnation.

I don’t consider Bleach, Soul Eater, Blue Exorcist, and Yu Yu Hakusho to be horror. Nor do I think Akira is horror but Hellsing is one of the best horror anime there is. Also Berserk, Highschool of the dead and the animated Dead Space movies are included in some of my favorites. That’s “MY” opinion. You are wasting your time trying to convince me otherwise.

Mushi Shi does have a fantastic English dub, but IMO that is the exception

You’re right. By my standards things that aren’t horror are not part of the horror genre. Regardless of their use of gothic or supernatural imagery and signifiers.

When I used that constructed example, I wasn’t referring to Hellsing. I was just being general. If such an anime as I described, one that is essentially no different than any other action anime except the super-powered fighters in question are “vampires” or some other supernatural monster, than by your standards it’d be horror. I.e., Bleach, Soul Eater, Blue Exorcist, and Yu Yu Hakusho must be horror.

I have watched Hellsing, the original and the OVA. Good show. Alucard is probably the most overpowered (within the context of and relative to his enemies) character ever written. Now that is part of the thing that makes the series fun, but there is no tension or fear of him dying. No horror. So how even can you call that “horror”?

If I remade “My Dinner with Andre” – a film consists solely and entirely of a casual conversation between two people – but rewrote it so that the two were ostensibly vampires and their casual conversation talked about vampire-related things, according to you: that would be horror.

It’s not horror cause it has ghosts. It’s horror cause in its substance (divorced from its symbols) it is designed to elicit horror and terror.

Twilight, horrible but still horror. By all rights Akira is not horror and by your standards Vampire Hunter D is not horror. And they just didn’t “re-jig” the myth, they injected a cocktail of steroids and amphetamines into it. I’d like to know which anime you do consider horror. I doubt you even watched the Hellsing OVA’s if you made the comment ” insert a few scenes or even just lines of dialogue about them drinking blood”. Hellsing drank Oceans of blood in his battle for London. Also he only battles “supernatural” forces.

I don’t think something should be called horror just cause it has vampires. In that case I could take anything, from any actual genre, give the character teeth, insert a few scenes or even just lines of dialogue about them drinking blood, re-jig the mythology a bit, and boom. . . horror.

I agreed that it could be here, but I think it’s more of a psychological thriller rather than horror. Then again, it is difficult to put the movie in a single genre, considering it’s got layers.

Isn’t Hellsing in actually Dracula aka Vlad Tepes? Is he not a vampire? And would you not group any and all Vampire movies into the horror genre? Why should an anime movie about the Vampire Count Dracula be an exception?

Mushishi and Hellsing both have GREAT English dubs. Many animes do, and believe it or not they actually are celebrities here and do earn good money. I can list over twenty english voice actors who primarily do anime from memory alone. They have great voices and make the characters even better sometimes.
