Do we know for certain that The Thing is set during winter? I mean, it’s set in the Antarctic and has daylight scenes (Antarctic winters are meant to be around 6 months of darkness)

In reply to chris. I think Frozen is a bit underrated. It has a lot of frigid elements from actually freezing to being eaten alive by wintry animals.

Dead of Winter

chris — Wed, 14 Jan 2015 00:00:00 +0000

In reply to chris. To both of you I hope you realize there is in fact a very popular horror movie of the same name. They're stuck up in a ski lift at a ski lodge overnight and start freezing to death and eaten by wolves. Omg.

Both “The Thing” & “The Shining” are simply two of my all favs. I enjoy ” Dead Snow” 1&2 for what they are. Also I thought “The Last Winter” was great.

The Shining, Jack nicholson dead face in the end is what hell freezes over looks like. Does The Thing count as a winter film since the Antartic never change seasons?

“The Shining”

Excellent choice.
I forgot about that one.

By: Darnell

In reply to Bill-Carson. The Shining takes place almost entirely in the winter and it's superior to both those movies.

I shamefully have never seen The Thing. My favorite has definitely got to be The Shining. Haven’t seen 30 Days of Night in years, but I remember it being pretty scary.

No need to repeat movies that have already been mentioned so, I’m adding
Storm of the Century. Sure it’s not a great movie but it’s entertaining enough and
worth watching on a cold wintery day

In reply to Bill-Carson.

Thats what I was gonna say.
I cant think of anything else specifically suited to winter other then the Thing.

But anything that involves loneliness and isolation works to.
(Although personally I find the isolated feeling of winter comforting.)

Looking at these comments, I realized I love most of the movies mentioned. I just love the cold and snow, and it just adds this extra atmosphere that no other look can achieve.

Just adding a winter film that I didn’t see mentioned in the previous comments:
Jack Frost
Not great by any means, but definitely wintery.
All the greats were covered in the original post and earlier comments.
*Edit* Never mind it was mentioned. Didn’t see it the first time through. Peace.
