You’ve taken my comment too literally. I said they could do with taking inspiration, not lifting the story. As in, they need to break away from the mindless action and 1 dimensional characters and give the franchise some structure, some true horror and a good story. That’s not to say I would like to see it start off in a remote abandoned country house in the middle of nowhere, but RE7 got the tone right. Anderson isn’t a very good person to quote on anything. He hasn’t made a single good movie since Event Horizon, he’s largely garbage and I’d question whether he’s even finished a single Resident Evil game. I think an adaptation of the first game could work very well, it wouldn’t need to be centered in the house the entire time. But that could be part of the story, their investigation leads them into the mansion and an underground facility where a fight for their lives ensues.

A good example of a game to movie would be Christophe Gans Silent Hill. It wasn’t perfect, but it was faithful to the game and featured some great scenes and had a wonderful atmosphere. RE the movie series, feels less like a movie and more like a game. It feels like a series of action scenes loosely connected by a paper thin story.

Yeah as I mentioned in my OP, the ending twist in the game is played very much like a true Resident Evil, and that’s why after the “ship” chapter it all falls into place and RE7 truly starts to fit in with the rest of the franchise.

That couldn’t simply be repeated though – it’s the reason why Anderson skipped the “mansion mystery” for the first one and opted for a full barrage of zombies and guns from the beginning.

I think a balance can be found, and that kung-fu can definitely be set aside (with the exception of Wesker’s badass moves, of course!) but starting with taking inspiration from RE7, the first RE in a while
without Chris, Jill or Leon, just doesn’t feel quite right for a reboot.

Not at all. If you’ve played the entire game, it may start off similar to Texas Chainsaw, but it steadily steers into something more unique. That is what Resident Evil needs, it needs reinvigorating rather than the rote nonsense we’ve become accustomed to. If I had one issue with RE7, it was that it featured no zombies. But it desperately needs change. Kung-fu, slow-mo zombie shit isn’t what the game was ever about.

That ain’t true. Most of the reason these movies had such a blast is thanks to the drawing power of its main characters, especially Alice, Jill and Claire, and the actresses portraying them, especially Milla Jovovich.

So if you had a more game-based story arc while keeping lovable characters like Ali Larter’s Claire Redfield around, the results would’ve been the same, and you could have much more memorable villains (like the Ashford Twins from the Code: Veronica game) to boot.

I hope they’ll keep this in mind when they inevitably reboot the franchise.

I think taking inspiration from RE7 would be bad for a movie/TV Series franchise, since RE7 itself is a RE game filtered through a “Evil Dead/ Texas Chainsaw Massacre” style.

The game still feels like a true RE because of the classic puzzle-based gameplay and the way the final plot twist is structured but a movie based on it could risk losing everything that makes RE unique and end up a fairly anonymous horror movie. Nobody wants that.

Each season could be built around one (or more) of the games, with characters like Claire, Barry and obviously Leon coming in as the story moves forward. Instant classic.

Did you even watch the movie? There was no big twist at the ending to leave things open for a sequel. There was not a twist to lure people into wanting a sequel or have some untold plot point they were delving into. The twist was within the movie itself and it all played out. The only reason they mention the door is left open for another sequel starring Alice is that she is Still Alive and there are Still Zombies. I don’t see them making another movie with Alice. I think they will reboot and start over.

I heard she was cut from The Final Chapter due to backlash about her appearance in the 5th film. People were whining that she was too bland, and a terrible actress. She actually came out and fired back recently that people seemed not to understand that she was being mind-controlled for the majority of the film and wasn’t able to exude much personality while that was going on. People are just idiots. I thought she was awesome as Jill, and I was really disappointed they cut her from the big finale. I liked The Final Chapter, but didn’t like that she was written out, and found it laughable that Claire didn’t mention Chris at all, and that even in the previous film after she got her memory back, she *still* never actually acknowledged that she remembered he was her brother!

Yea to be honest I think she did Jill justice.

I really thought Sienna Guillory embodied Jill Valentine quite well. Hopefully she gets casted in the reboot.

Except Tomb Raider was actually crap. Jolie is a great actress but the films had terribe scripts. Hope the new one is a lot better.

I second this! A seventh flick wherein Alice is missing till the third act or so would be great. She could pass the torch to a new zombie slayer or keep hunting down creatures the anti-virus has not yet killed.

Resident Evil: TFC budget ~40 million
Terminator 5 budget ~125 million
Ghostbuster budget ~150 million

See the point? Resident Evil costs a fourth of the price and is still gonna push 300 million.

Maybe it’s just me but I thought 7 was pretty eerie and suspenseful from start to finish.

If it was more closer to its source material, you wouldn’t be hearing “Resident Evil TFC just broke 238 million!” We’re 6 movies in the franchise! It’s unheard of for a video game franchise. We’d be lucky to even get two movies if it was closer to the source.

Look at how Silent Hill turned out. Revelations tried to replicate the third game, if I remember correctly, but it turned out horrible and didn’t even perform well at the box office.

As long as they put aside Alice and focus on the other characters, I don’t mind them “rebooting” in a sense of continuing Paul’s franchise filling in the plot holes.

We seen this with the latest Terminator that didn’t do well except some other places where it was a hit, does that mean it’s worth getting a sequel? NOPE or how about the Ghosbusters reboot? WON’T HAPPEN.

The Alice story is over, there’s no more to expand, i mean what the hell are they even gonna do anyway? They will just repeat the same crap as always where we see Alice kick butt or have one of those “big twist” as you mentioned to hook everyone to see what’s going to happen next.

Brad, let it go and move on or move on with something else because if they do plan on making a continuation i’ll bet it will do so much worst and it will suffer the same way as The Blair Witch and Rings

A sequel/spin-off with Ada Wong, Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy would be awesome.
