“Not the Same Kind of Romantic Hero We’ve Seen”: Karyn Kusama Teases Her Upcoming ‘Dracula’ Movie
As we learned back in March, Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation, Destroyer) has been set to direct a new take on Dracula for Blumhouse Productions, with Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (The Invitation) writing the script. What can we expect from Kusama’s take on the classic horror novel? She teased the project in a chat with The Kingcast last week.
Kusama joined hosts Scott Wampler and Eric Vespe to talk about Stephen King’s Carrie, and at the tail end of the episode she briefly touched upon what she’s doing with Dracula.
“It’s a fairly faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel,” Kusama told the podcast. “I think something that gets overlooked in the adaptations of Dracula in the past is the idea of multiple voices. In fact, the book is filled with different points of view. And the one point of view we don’t get access to, and all most adaptations give access to, is Dracula himself. So I would just say in some respect, this is going to be an adaptation called Dracula, but it’s perhaps not the same kind of romantic hero that we’ve seen in the past… in past interpretations of Dracula.”

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.
Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things), Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.
The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).
Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.
Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.
Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.
In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
