‘Army of the Dead’: Zack Snyder’s Netflix Zombie Film is Getting a Prequel and Animated Series
Vegas is about to run out of luck.
Announced this morning, Netflix and Zack Snyder‘s upcoming zombie film Army of the Dead is getting a prequel anime series with “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas”!
Additionally, an “international prequel” of the feature film variety is also on the way.
Shay Hatten is on board to write the prequel and the animated series, with Matthias Schweighöfer directing the prequel that’ll center on his character from Army of the Dead.
“Lost Vegas” will center on Dave Bautista‘s character from Army of the Dead, and Variety reports that Zack Snyder himself will be directing two episodes of the series.
Jay Oliva will be show-running “Lost Vegas.”
As for the main movie, that too takes place in Las Vegas. Snyder recently described, “A zombie plague hits Vegas, and they’re able to contain the virus to the city – they build a wall out of shipping containers. And then the city falls. And six years later, one of the casino owners hires this group of zombie soldiers to go get his money that he left in a safe in the casino.”
The film’s cast includes Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Huma Qureshi, Garret Dillahunt, Omari Hardwick, Hiroyuki Sanada, Raúl Castillo, Nora Arnezeder, Matthias Schweighöfer, Tig Notaro, Samantha Win and Rich Cetrone.
Army of the Dead is expected to take a bite out of Netflix in 2021.
Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.
Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things), Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.
The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).
Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.
Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.
Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.
In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
