WB Considered Bringing ‘Mortal Kombat’ to HBO Max But Theatrical Release Currently Expected
The most recent release date we were provided with for the new Mortal Kombat movie from Warner Bros/New Line was January 15, 2021, but as you probably figured by now, that’s no longer the plan thanks to the ongoing pandemic upending the film industry. The movie currently has no release date, but WB is reportedly still planning for a theatrical release.
In a lengthy article published by Variety tonight that ponders the uncertainty of 2021’s theatrical slate, the website notes that WB had at one point considered bringing the Mortal Kombat movie straight to HBO Max, much like they’re doing with Wonder Woman 1984 this Christmas, but that the studio now expects to “delay the film’s theatrical debut instead.”
As the article also notes, however, “In Hollywood these days, the only certainty is that nothing is certain.” At this point it’s become pretty clear that the horrors of 2020 are going to extend deep into 2021, with theaters across the United States likely to remain closed for much of next year. And that makes it impossible to predict the fate of many big time releases that were pushed out of 2020 entirely, including Mortal Kombat as well as films like A Quiet Place Part II, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Morbius, Candyman, Antlers, Spiral: From the Book of Saw and more.
As for Godzilla vs. Kong, the monster battle may end up on HBO Max in the near future.

The cast includes Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Chin Han as Shang Tsun, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, stuntwoman Elissa Cadwell as Nitara, and Sisi Stringer as Mileena. Lewis Tan is playing an unknown leading character.
Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky) is staying busy here in 2024, directing not only the werewolf movie Big Bad but also an upcoming thriller titled Drop.
The project for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes is being described as a “fast-paced thriller,” and Deadline reports today that Violett Beane (Truth or Dare) has joined the cast.
Newcomer Jacob Robinson has also signed on to star in the mysterious thriller. Previously announced, Meghann Fahy (“White Lotus”) will be leading the cast.
Landon recently teased on Twitter, “This is my love letter to DePalma.”
Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach wrote the script.
Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller and Cameron Fuller — “who brought the script in to Platinum Dunes” — are producing the upcoming Drop. Sam Lerner is an executive producer.
THR notes, “The film is a Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse production for Universal.”
