Zack Snyder Developing ‘Army of the Dead’ Sequel for Netflix

Published

on

Netflix is going all-in on the Army of the Dead Universe, which kicked off with this year’s mega-zombie actioneer and will continue with this fall’s prequel Army of Thieves. There’s also an animated prequel series in the works titled “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas”.

Zack Snyder will continue to build the epic Zombie Universe as part of his brand new first-look deal with Netflix, announced this afternoon by THR. While Snyder has openly talked about his aspirations for a sequel, this is the first time it’s been confirmed, with the site reporting that development is underway with the first movie’s co-writer Shay Hatten.

There is a bit of bad news for those who absolutely loved Army of the Dead – don’t expect a sequel for quite some time. Snyder will first focus his full attention on his sci-fi adventure tale Rebel Moon for Netflix.

In a previous chat with Entertainment Tonight, Snyder teases that he knows “exactly where the story goes” from here.

Army of the Dead ends with a sequel tease, with Omari Hardwick’s Vanderohe making it out of Las Vegas alive… with a bite. On a plane to Mexico City, Vanderohe is in the early stages of becoming a zombie when the film comes to a close, suggesting that the zombie virus is spreading beyond the walls of Las Vegas.

Presumably, a sequel would see Army of the Dead leaving Vegas behind completely, with the infection spreading in a more Dawn of the Dead-esque way.

What would you like to see from this growing Zombie Universe?!

In the Netflix movie…

Army of the Dead takes place following a zombie outbreak that has left Las Vegas in ruins and walled off from the rest of the world. When Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a displaced Vegas local, former zombie war hero who’s now flipping burgers on the outskirts of the town he now calls home, is approached by casino boss Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada), it’s with the ultimate proposition: Break into the zombie-infested quarantine zone to retrieve $200 million sitting in a vault beneath the strip before the city is nuked by the government in 32 hours.

“Driven by the hope that the payoff could help pave the way to a reconciliation with his estranged daughter Kate (Ella Purnell), Ward takes on the challenge, assembling a ragtag team of experts for the heist. They include Maria Cruz (Ana de la Reguera), an ace mechanic and Ward’s old friend; Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick), a zombie killing machine; Marianne Peters (Tig Notaro), a cynical helicopter pilot; Mikey Guzman (Raúl Castillo), a go-for-broke influencer and Chambers (Samantha Win), his ride-or-die; Martin (Garret Dillahunt), the casino’s head of security; a badass warrior known as the Coyote (Nora Arnezeder) who recruits Burt Cummings (Theo Rossi), a slimy security guard; and a brilliant German safe cracker named Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer).

“Scott finds an unexpected emotional hurdle when Kate joins the expedition to search for Geeta (Huma S. Qureshi), a mother who’s gone missing inside the city. With a ticking clock, a notoriously impenetrable vault, and a smarter, faster horde of Alpha zombies closing in, only one thing’s for certain in the greatest heist ever attempted: survivors take all.”

If you haven’t yet seen A24 and Saint Maud director Rose Glass’ new movie Love Lies Bleeding, you should definitely get out there and support it in theaters while you can. The critically acclaimed romantic thriller is one of this year’s best movies so far, driven by incredible lead performances from Katy O’Brian and the always compelling Kristen Stewart.

Katy O’Brian just landed a huge role in Mission Impossible 8, but what’s next for Kristen Stewart? Well, for starters, don’t expect to see her in any Marvel movies anytime soon.

Stewart tells the “Not Skinny but Not Fat” podcast, “I will likely never do a Marvel movie … it sounds like a fucking nightmare, actually.” She further explains, “You would have to put so much money and so much trust into one person … and it doesn’t happen.”

And so therefore what ends up happening is this algorithmic, weird experience where you can’t feel personal at all about it. So likely not,” Kristen Stewart continues in her chat with the podcast. “But maybe the world changes, that’s what I’m saying.” She notes, however, “if Greta Gerwig asked me to do a Marvel movie, then I would do it.”

So what DOES Kristen Stewart want to do next? Chatting with Variety on the red carpet just a couple months back, she indicated that she’s far more interested in horror than Marvel!

I’d like to make a good scary movie,” Stewart answered when asked what she’d like to do next. “Like something a little more psychological. Yeah, a really good horror movie.”

Kristen Stewart is of course no stranger to the horror/thriller genres, getting her start as a child actor in David Fincher’s Panic Room. From there, she starred in 2007 horror movie The Messengers, as well as the Twilight movies, ghost story Personal Shopper, and 2018’s Lizzie. And don’t forget 2020’s Underwater or David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future.

The ball is in your court, filmmakers. Let’s make it happen.
