It’s the first full week of October, and nearly TWENTY brand new horror movies and shows are on the way. Perhaps we’re a little biased here, as it is after all a Bloody Disgusting project, but we’re absolutely thrilled to unleash the wild V/H/S/94 this week, for starters, which currently has a fresh 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. We’re insanely proud of this one, and we think fans of the franchise are going to be very pleased with the segments this time around.

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg for the week of October 4, 2021, so let’s talk a closer look at ALL of the new horror that’s headed our way between now and October 10th!

We kick the week off with the Digital release of David Bruckner’s critically acclaimed new horror movie The Night House, which will be available at home on Tuesday, October 5.

The Night House was released exclusively in theaters back in August, and while we’re talking Rotten Tomatoes scores, it scared up an impressive 86% fresh rating.

The Night House is a standout film… It’s moody and atmospheric, but above all, it’s scary as hell,” raved Meagan Navarro in her review out of the Sundance premiere.

In the film, “Reeling from the unexpected death of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) is left alone in the lakeside home he built for her. Before long, disturbing visions of a presence in the house begin to beckon her with a ghostly allure. Yearning for answers, she begins digging into her husband’s belongings, only to discover strange and disturbing secrets.”

October 5th will also see the Netflix premiere of Escape the Undertaker, an interactive movie starring WWE legend The Undertaker and superstars Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods.

The unique experience invites you directly into The Undertaker’s haunted house, and you will control the fate of the New Day as they make their way through the nightmare.

You can watch the trailer now for a sneak peek.

Not to be confused with the emotional Val Kilmer documentary that just came out this year, Dread presents new horror-comedy Val, releasing digitally on October 5th.

In the film from director Aaron Fradkin, “A criminal on the run breaks into the home of a high class escort, only to realize nothing is as it seems.”

More indie horror is on the way this Tuesday, with Lionsgate howling at The Amityville Moon. This one’s a werewolf movie, as you might imagine, and the cast includes A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master actress Tuesday Knight as “Sister Ruth.”

“As Alyssa and Karla try to escape from the church home that holds them captive, Karla is slaughtered by a vicious, semi-human creature.” Watch the trailer here.

Rodents of unusual size? They actually do exist in this week’s indie horror movie The Mutation, which is the final new horror movie release for Tuesday, October 5th.

The trailer for this one is a mixed bag of a cool-looking practical monster and a terrible-looking computer-generated monster, with the star of the show here being a man/rat hybrid.

“After a deadly experiment on a rat goes wrong, the mutated rat has been let loose in a city and a group of detectives are on the hunt for the beast. Zoologist, Allen Marsh must work alongside a grieving widow to help the detectives capture and exterminate the mutated rat. As the body count rises, no one is safe, and the rat is growing at a rapid pace!”

Screen Media is bringing an extended version of the definitive Ghostbusters doc, Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters, to VOD platforms this coming Friday.

The documentary recounts the story behind the classic 1984 comedy that starred Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray.

Watch an exclusive clip featuring Ernie Hudson here.

Wednesday, October 6th is also a big day for horror releases, kicking off with Creep director Patrick Brice’s new movie on Netflix, a slasher titled There’s Someone Inside Your House.

The killer in this teen slasher, based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Stephanie Perkins, wears masks that look like each of his victims, and he’s out to expose their secrets.

And, of course kill them all. In increasingly brutal ways. Watch the trailer now.

October 6th is also the day Bloody Disgusting’s V/H/S/94 premieres exclusively on Shudder, featuring five new nightmares from the makers of films including Ready or Not, The Night House, You’re Next, The Night Comes for Us, and Knives and Skin.

In V/H/S/94, after the discovery of a mysterious VHS tape, a brutish police swat team launch a high-intensity raid on a remote warehouse, only to discover a sinister cult compound whose collection of pre-recorded material uncovers a nightmarish conspiracy.

The filmmakers who contributed tapes this time around include Simon Barrett, Timo Tjahjanto, Chloe Okuno, Jennifer Reeder, and Ryan Prows.

If you haven’t yet watched the bonkers trailer, get on that!

A24’s new movie Lamb kicks off a huge release day on Friday, October 8th, the film centered on a couple who find a newborn on Christmas Eve who is half human, half sheep.

Meagan writes about the Noomi Rapace starring film, “While Lamb may not fully satisfy on a narrative level, it does succeed as an experience. Rapace is the precise actor to lead an oddball movie like this, and the emotional beats resonate. Even if it can be challenging to grasp the peculiarities fully, Ada tugs at your heartstrings, and Lamb sweeps you up in its melancholic mood.”

Lamb will be released exclusively in theaters.

‘The Manor’

The final two films in this year’s crop of “Welcome to Blumhouse” projects for Amazon Prime Video debut on Friday, with the new movies titled Madres and The Manor.

In Madres, directed by Ryan Zaragoza: “A Mexican-American couple expecting their first child relocate to a migrant farming community in 1970’s California. When the wife begins to experience strange symptoms and terrifying visions, she tries to determine if it’s related to a legendary curse or something more nefarious.”

And in The Manor, directed by Axelle Carolyn: “After suffering a stroke, Judith Albright moves into a historic nursing home, where she begins to suspect something supernatural is preying on the residents. In order to escape she’ll need to convince everyone around her that she doesn’t actually belong there after all.”

Also headed our way on October 8th is the Sundance hit Knocking, which is headed to theaters this Friday ahead of an On Demand and Digital release on October 19th.

In the film, ”After suffering a traumatic incident, Molly (Cecilia Milocco) moves into a new apartment to begin her path to recovery, but it’s not long after her arrival that a series of persistent knocks and screams begin to wake her up at night. Molly’s new life begins to unravel as the screams intensify and no one else in the building believes or is willing to help her.”

Watch the trailer for Knocking here.

Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeywoman comes to VOD on Friday, a sort of prequel to the Academy Award winning Monster that stars Peyton List as Aileen Wuornos.

Based on Aileen Wuornos’s early life in 1976, the film follows America’s most notorious female serial killer in Florida when she marries an older wealthy Yacht Club president only to inflict mayhem within her new family and Florida’s high society.

Tobin Bell (Saw franchise) also stars in this one.

Based on the 2017 video game, Taiwanese festival favorite Detention is being released by Dekanalog this Friday, coming to select US theaters as well as virtual cinemas nationwide.

Set in 1962 Taiwan during the White Terror martial law period, Detention tells the story of Fang Ray Shin (Gingle Wang), a female student at the hillside Greenwood High School who works with a fellow student to find their missing teacher, but soon find that their school is no longer the familiar world they remember. The building has become an alien land of ghosts and demons, and the two students will be forced to confront a terrible, secret truth.

Vertical Entertainment unlocks The Secret of Sinchanee on Digital HD and On Demand Friday, October 8th, which is said to tackle “incredibly challenging themes of xenophobia, childhood trauma, and mental health issues, testing the confines of the horror/thriller genre.”

“After the recent untimely death of his father, the survivor of a mysterious double murder, returns to his childhood home where the crimes took place, only to discover that a paranormal presence has been living in the house and haunting the sacred land it was built on.”

On the family-friendly side of things, the Disney+ Halloween special “Muppets Haunted Mansion” will be available beginning this Friday, and it should be quite a Halloween treat.

The first-ever Halloween special for The Muppets gang, Muppets Haunted Mansion take place on Halloween, when Gonzo is challenged to spend one night in The Haunted Mansion.

More Halloween horrors are headed to Disney+ on October 8th with the streaming premiere of feature film Under Wraps, a remake of the Disney Channel movie from the ’90s. Under Wraps premiered on the Disney Channel last Friday, and heads to Disney+ this Friday.

“The re-imagined story takes place a few days before Halloween when 12-year-old friends Gilbert, Marshall and Amy accidentally revive a mummy they discover in a neighbor’s basement, which they affectionately name Harold. However, they must rush to return him to his resting place before midnight on Halloween.”

Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy are back this Halloween for “Joe Bob’s Halloween Hoedown” on Shudder, a brand new special that’ll be premiering October 8 at 9pm ET on Shudder TV.

Halloween Kills director David Gordon Green will be one of the guest stars for “Halloween Hoedown,” along with producer Jason Blum. Be sure to watch and tweet along!

The final release for the week of October 4th-10th is the Season 2 premiere of The CW’s Killer Camp” on Sunday, October 10th, a slasher-inspired reality competition series.

After all, one of them is a Killer who will engage the help of homicidal Handyman Bruce to kill their “friends” …one by one.”

The Platform 2 Netflix

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s The Platform was a massive hit for Netflix back in 2020, becoming one of the most watched original movies in the streaming service’s history.

Coming soon? The Platform 2! Netflix has shared two first look images from the upcoming sequel this morning, which will again be directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia.

Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian star in The Platform 2.

Netflix previews, “A mysterious figure has managed to establish a new law in The Platform, but can justice truly be enforced in hell? And who will enforce it?”

No word yet on a Netflix premiere date for The Platform 2. Stay tuned.

The first film is set inside a vertical prison system, where inmates are assigned to a level and forced to ration food from a platform that moves between the floors. Inmates on high floors eat better than those below, and one man tries to effect change so everyone gets enough.

Rafael reviewed The Platform for us at TIFF, raving in his 4.5-star write-up: “The Platform takes full advantage of its isolated setting and small cast to instead focus on a high concept, a tight script, and sharp dialogue that will make you laugh as often as it will make you think. This is a funny, heartfelt, at times disgusting, yet also thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that reminds of Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, but with way better food.”

The Platform also made Daniel Kurland’s Best International Horror Films of 2020 list.
