‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Domestic Box Office Total Matches 2016 Movie

Ghostbusters Afterlife box office

We’re now two months into the theatrical release of Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with the film now available on Digital HD and coming to physical media on February 1.

Across those two months, the sequel to the original classic has now scared up $195,117,539 worldwide, in comparison to the $229,147,509 worldwide total of Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters back in 2016. But what’s particularly interesting here is that the domestic totals of the two films have ended up virtually the same, despite one film being released during a pandemic.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is currently sitting at $127,117,539 domestically, with $665,000 being added just this past weekend. As for Feig’s Ghostbusters, that film ended with $128,350,574 domestically, a number that is virtually the same as Afterlife‘s current total. Afterlife will still be making more money in the coming days, coming even closer to that number.

The good news for Afterlife is that the film’s budget was much lower than Feig’s movie, the latter ballooning to a massive $140 million production budget and essentially ensuring that it wasn’t going to make back the production/marketing spend at the box office. Reitman’s Afterlife was set up for success, reportedly costing a much more reasonable $70-80 million.

All things considered, will we be getting a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife? That may depend on how well the film does on home video, so stay tuned as we keep learning more.

You can watch the first 10 minutes of Ghostbusters: Afterlife down below, which let us know what Egon Spengler had been getting up to in the decades since the original movies.

“When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.”

“John is a brilliant creative mind. We’ve been looking for the right thing to do together since we filmed Pee Wee’s Big Holiday and it’s finally here,” 3:59’s Joe and Nick Manganiello told Deadline. “Very excited to get to work on such weird, wild project with him.”
