‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey’ Slashing into Theaters for One Night Only Next Year
A dark retelling of the classic Winnie the Pooh story, the indie horror movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey reimagines the beloved characters as murderous slasher maniacs, and the film’s viral success on the internet has led to an upcoming theatrical release. THR reports today that Fathom Events will bring the film to US theaters on February 15, 2023.
The catch? Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey will be playing for ONE-NIGHT-ONLY.
THR notes, “Meanwhile, Altitude has acquired Blood and Honey for the U.K., Mexican chain Cinemex has plans to put it on several hundred screens and in Canada the Cineplex chain chain is releasing the film. The Hollywood Reporter understands that several other territories are also planning theatrical releases.”
Rhys Frake-Waterfield directed the upcoming horror movie for Jagged Edge Productions.
In this version of the classic story, Christopher Robin is headed off to college and he has abandoned his old friends, which then leads to the duo embracing their inner monsters.
“Christopher Robin is pulled away from them, and he’s not [given] them food, it’s made Pooh and Piglet’s life quite difficult,” Waterfield recently told Variety, detailing the plot.
“Because they’ve had to fend for themselves so much, they’ve essentially become feral,” the filmmaker continued. “So they’ve gone back to their animal roots. They’re no longer tame: they’re like a vicious bear and pig who want to go around and try and find prey.”
Waterfield also noted in his chat with Variety that while Tigger and Eeyore won’t appear in the movie due to copyright issues, the story in his mind is that Pooh and Piglet got so hungry they ate Eeyore somewhere along the way. Yeah, it’s that kind of movie.
Amber Doig-Thorne, Maria Taylor, and Danielle Scott star in the horror movie, which is possible thanks to the original story slipping into the public domain. What a time to be alive!
