Robin Williams also had his own history of substance abuse. Early in his career he battled with an addiction with cocaine, which he shook off after hearing of John Belushi’s death and because he was becoming a father. Later in life he had his battles with alcohol. He had a lot of insecurities and a lot of anxiety, which he, according to his own words, treated with alcohol, to be able to hide from them. Only, he admitted, it didn’t really help. Being an entertainer with those kind of problems isn’t a picnic, really. No matter how much money you have.

THANK YOU!! i agree w/ you 100000%. it pisses me off when people say someone who commits suicide is a coward or whatever. depression is insidious and sometimes the road just has been too long. i’m not saying suicide is good but i just hate when people (many of whom i suspect have never suffered from real long lasting depression) trash the person who has done it/attempted it.

Not everyone deserves respect when they leave it, that’s a complete fallacy. Respect is earned, not freely given. Only a fool gives respect unquestionably. I’ll agree to disagree with you on this as I just don’t share your point of view, but I also won’t sink to the level of throwing around insults, I’m better than that.

Depression is an actual illness… like cancer. It’s not just about feeling sad or down for specific reasons – sometimes there are no reasons. Just because a person may or may not be grateful for their talent and the success they have does not mean that depression goes away. The man was a genius actor and likely used that to his best ability to hide the pain of depression and addiction that he struggled with.

So you think it’s okay to be “mad” at someone who dies of an accidental overdose but not for someone who purposefully takes their life? You, sir (or madam), need to be treated for more than depression. You are either crazy or heartless (or twelve). Not trying to start a feud, but depression and addiction are both mental problems and neither is something that is asked for (and let’s not forget that many use an addiction to treat their depression when conventional medicine proves inadequate). Also odd you ignore the alcoholism that you believe contributed to RW’s death but show scorn for PSH’s use of chemicals. Don’t misunderstand me. I liked RW a lot more than PSH, so I am not defending him for that reason. But everybody deserves respect in this world and everybody deserve respect when they leave it, no matter the circumstance.

Don’t be mad at him. Feel for his family. If it were just a junkie overdosing like Philip Seymour Hoffman I’d agree, but depression is an amazingly powerful enemy to have. I’ve been diagnosed and treated in the past, but depression untreated plus alcoholism can be a devestating combination as we’ve seen.

I know that it does not make your life perfect i guess but i dont understand how many people that managed to become big, successul, popular and wealthy celebritys can become depressed and want to kill themselves.
Extremely few peope in the World are able to get that successful so it feels like only that should make you feel happy with your life.
And i dont think these celebritys that got depressed and killed themselves did not have any friends or family or anything like that.
I have been depressed a couple times in my life but that was because i felt like a loser that nobody cared about and that i probably would never be successful at anything.
These celebritys are the opposite of that.
