I watched this movie a couple of nights ago and I really liked it. It is what I would refer to as Lovecraft-like as opposed to David Cronenberg-ian. It is body horror, but not the over the top sickening gory type of shock that Cronenberg films elicit. I read below that someone said that these boys are being turned into sea creatures, and I don’t know what film you were watching to get that view. —-> My take is this; these boys are being used by the women as incubators to carry chimera sea creatures to term like a pregnancy. The serum that the nurses keep injecting the kids is what puts the creatures’ embryos into the kids, and the kids carry the fetus to term. The women are all obviously part of some aquatic/fish/Dagon cult, and/or are chimeras themselves because they all look pale and funky and have tentacles on their backs. The dead child at the bottom of the sea was either a sacrifice and/or just a child who died during the birth of one of these creatures. Nikolaus obviously begins to question everything and his questions are answered when he sees one of the boys birth a creature from his stomach. Then the empathetic nurse notices his panic and helps him escape the island. —-> Obviously, it is on the surface a coming of age story because of the age of the boys in this movie. But, I see it as a broader metaphor for our abilities as humans to question our perceived ‘authority’ figures. That where the evolution come into play so to speak. It is saying that our ability to question authority, or question anything else for that matter, is the essence of what it is to be human. Once you stop questioning things, you are becoming less than human and becoming a sheep or some other herd animal. Or a funky sea creature chimera thingy…. 🙂

Ummm, I think that is someones’ weird interpretation of this movie. I didn’t get that at all, so I don’t think they spoiled anything for you.
