It was announced back in December that HBO and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (“Riverdale,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) are developing a reboot of the vampire series “True Blood,” which was based on the novels by Charlaine Harris and created by Alan Ball. The series aired between 2008 and 2014, officially coming to an end after seven seasons and 80 episodes.

The original series starred Anna Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress whose life is forever changed when she falls in love with Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a vampire. Asked for her thoughts on the upcoming reboot in a new chat with Collider, Paquin indicated that she was as surprised by the announcement as we were, and she wishes the new team well.

Paquin told the site, “Charlaine Harris didn’t even know it was happening. Everybody’s phones were blowing up. Cast and crew, by the way, were like, ‘Oh my God, your show is getting picked back up!’ and we were all like, ‘Huh? What?'”

“We do live in an era of entertainment where the reboot and the sequel have become a currency. So, is it time? I don’t know,” the actress continued. “That’s really not my department. It was some of the best years of my life, but I don’t think them continuing to tell those stories or continuing in that world really has anything to do with the thing that we created. That’s its own special little entity that was ours and came with a whole family of cast and crew who are still in touch. We had a Cinco de Mayo lockdown Zoom with our cast and crew, and there were 75 people. We actually all are a family who has stayed in touch, and not just the actors. These are our people.”

Paquin added, “So, I wish them well. I don’t know if they need us for anything. Aren’t we all too old now? But it’s a fun world. It’s a supernatural world with endless possibilities. Of course, there’s room to do more and to tell more stories within that universe. We don’t own it.”

The reboot is said to be in the very early stages, and at this time we don’t know if it will essentially remake the series with the same characters or tell new stories entirely.

Perhaps it will even bring some beloved favorites back into the mix…

Ghost Crucifixes.

As we roll through October, we’re crossing off timely entries like Hitchcock’s Rebecca, as well as “comfort” horror entries like The Final Girls and now Mike Dougherty‘s Trick ‘r Treat (shot in 2007, released in 2009).

In the horror anthology, five interconnected stories play on the traditions and tropes of Halloween. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Anna Paquin, Dylan Baker and Brian Cox, Dougherty’s stories mix macabre humor, exciting adventure and moralistic punishment to all who dare to offend Sam, the adorable tyke in footy pajamas who has become a merchandising icon.

It’s basically the perfect film to help get you into the Halloween mood, regardless of what your holiday plans entail in this weird and wacky year!

Episode 96 – Trick ‘r Treat (2007) feat. Marisa Mirabal

Keep those pumpkins lit and pass out the candy because this week on the pod we’re discussing Mike Dougherty’s 2007 (or is it 2009?) Trick ‘r Treat.

Joining us is fellow writer (and Trace’s real life co-worker!) Marisa Mirabal, who agrees with Joe that this is the best horror anthology film, why she hates superhero films and why the film’s score deserves more praise.

Plus: which segments we prefer, Sam’s ascent into the horror icon hall of fame (merchandising!) and the film’s unfortunate connection to not one, but two shitty men!

Cross out Trick ‘r Treat!

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re closing out October with horror gateway film, Hocus Pocus! Expect some singing and discussion about why this one has become a queer classic (hint: the Sanderson sisters are drag queens)

P.S. Subscribe to our Patreon for tons of additional content! This month we have episodes on Ratched, Books of Blood, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Rebecca, as well as an audio commentary on Halloween: H20 coming out just in time for a COVID Halloween!

Have you been missing Anna Paquin on the small screen ever since “True Blood” came to an end? The Oscar winner heads back to television with “Bellevue.“

WGN America announced today that it has acquired the U.S. rights to the compelling original drama series. In addition to starring, Anna Paquin also executive produces alongside creators/showrunners Jane Maggs (“The Offering”) and producer/director Adrienne Mitchell (“Bomb Girls,” “Durham County”).

The series invites you into Bellevue – a small town with big secrets.

“Twenty years ago   the murder of a young woman traumatized the community. Now the killer is back. Or is he? When a high school hockey star wrestling with his gender identity goes missing and all signs point to foul play, Detective Annie Ryder (Paquin) must unravel all the pieces to this gripping mystery before her own life falls apart. As the case pulls her further away from her family, she is also confronted by a mysterious person from her past with disturbing answers and a terrifying need to get inside her head. Along the way, Annie must navigate a complicated relationship with her on again, off again ex, Eddie and her boss on the force, Police Chief Peter Welland.”

The eight-episode, one-hour drama is produced by Muse Entertainment and Back Alley Film Productions and also stars Shawn Doyle (“House of Cards,” “Fargo”) and Allen Leech (“Downton Abbey,” The Imitation Game).

On August 24, 2014, the seventh and final season of “True Blood” aired on HBO. Titled ‘Thank You,’ the episode culminated with vampire Bill Compton meeting the “true death” at the hands of longtime lover Sookie Stackhouse, who helped Bill plunge a stake into his heart and end his run of immortality. It was a depressing fate for the character, and many longtime fans of the show weren’t very happy about how it all went down.

Now, three years later, Stephen “Bill” Moyer has reflected on the “True Blood” series finale in an interview with The Wrap. According to his comments, even Moyer himself isn’t a big fan of the ending HBO decided to go with.

“You’ve got to end a show some way, and at the time, it was explained to me in an interesting way,” Moyer told the site. “And the idea that my character, Vampire Bill, was giving Sookie life by dying, and the fact that he chooses death in order to give her life, is the ultimate sacrifice of love.”

But, he added, “I think the benefit of hindsight is a great thing that we never get the chance to express or be able to do. I don’t know whether we’d do the same again — I’d think probably not.”

Moyer also said that he’d love for “True Blood” to some day get a reboot. We’re not holding our breathe, though it would be fun to see the characters return down the road.

Happy Valentine’s Day/Singles Awareness Day/Sunday to all of you! I shamefully admit that I am extremely behind schedule writing this post. It’s currently 3:30 on Valentine’s Day 2016), and I put off writing this so I could go see an 11am showing of Deadpool (which is awesome).  Unfortunately this means that I did not give myself ample time to research this topic, which I thought would be fairly interesting. So the list you are about to see is full of romances that bloomed on the set of…shall we say horror-ish movies? It proved to be quite difficult to find actual stories of romance that bloomed on the sets of horror films. I’m not a quitter though, so I was determined to get at least five, and dammit I tried. I tried so hard, so here you go! Enjoy this list as much as you can, and I hope it gives you a chuckle or two on this “holiday.”

Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt – Seven

First of all, Seven is a horror film. I stand by Jonathan on that one. Anyway, I’m actually surprised I didn’t know about this one. Apparently Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow began dating on the set of David Fincher’s masterpiece. They dated for three years and actually got engaged, only to call it off after six months of engagement. Maybe this isn’t exactly “true love,” but I’ll count it.

Valentine's Day Horror Romance

Jeff Goldblum & Geena Davis – The Fly

Interestingly enough, Jeff Goldblum helped Geena Davis get the role of Veronica Queef Quaife in David Cronenberg’s 1986 body horror film. This was their second film together, and their chemistry is palpable on screen. That chemistry is what makes The Fly such a tragic film, since it actually makes you want to see these two lovebirds make it. As many of you may know, that would not be the case. It would turn out to foreshadow their actual relationship though, as they were married in 1987 and divorced by 1990.

Valentine's Day Horror Romance

Anna Paquin  & Stephen Moyer – True Blood

These two comprise the only couple on this list that are still together today! Paquin and Moyer began dating during the HBO series’ first season in 2007 and were married in 2010. They are still happily married. Paquin even came out as bisexual in a PSA four months before her wedding, helping to”inspire and engage everyone, especially straight people, to become active participants in the advancement of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality.”

Anna Paquin and Steven Moyer in True Blood

Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart – Twilight

Before you immediately click “X” on the top right corner of your screen (or the red circle in the top left corner for any Mac users out there), hear me out: I fully understand that Twilight is not a horror movie. I just didn’t want to post a list with four items. There, I said it. Now that that is out of the way, we can focus on this thing that is Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. They met on the set of Twilight in 2008 and managed to keep a low-profile relationship for several years until she was caught kissing her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders in 2012. She eventually issued an apology to Pattinson, but he confirmed that they had split up during an interview in 2014.

Valentine's Day Horror Romance

Courteney Cox & David Arquette – Scream

This is a Hollywood relationship that hurts my heart. Cox and Arquette met in 1996 while filming Wes Craven’s seminal slasher film Scream, and were married before the third film was released. They would eventually separate in 2010 and divorce in 2013 after nearly 14 years of marriage (they filmed Scream 4 during their separation). This break-up was just so difficult to face because they really did have great chemistry in front of the camera (and I had finally gotten used to calling her Courteney Cox-Arquette). Now, Cox recently split from Snow Patrol band member Johnny McDaid and Arquette married to Entertainment Tonight correspondent Christina McLarty while taking bit parts in awesome horror movies.

Valentine's Day Horror Romances

As I mentioned before, I did not give myself ample time to research this topic, so that’s on me. Do you know of any other couples that met while filming a horror movie? Let me know in the comments below or shoot me a Tweet!

Recently it was announced that New Line was set to reboot A Nightmare on Elm Street once again. Given how people feel about remakes and Hollywood’s lack of originality, this bit of news is probably disappointing to most. I get the frustration associated with that, but at the end of the day I just want a good movie, regardless of whether or not the material is original. And truth be told, I’m not ready to say goodbye to Freddy (or Michael or Jason or Leatherface and so on) so I welcome a remake/reboot, provided it’s actually good.

In his post on this news, Mr. Disgusting mentioned the idea of a female Krueger. Personally, I think this is a great idea. The issue with taking another stab at A Nightmare on Elm Street is that Robert Englund playing Freddy was such a vital part of the success the original franchise achieved. Replacing Englund is no easy task. So why not go a different route and introduce a woman Krueger? I’m on board, so much so that I decided to come up with five actresses that I think would make for excellent choices!

HBO gave Comic-Con fans a look ahead at the final episodes of the concluding season of “True Blood”, which boats one major question: will Bill Compton survive in the end?

The trailer is about 30-seconds of story build and there rest is a montage of revealing footage.

In addition, those in attendance at the Con included exec producer Brian Buckner and co-stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Nelsan Ellis, Rutina Wesley, Kristin Bauer van Straten, Deborah Ann Woll, Carrie Preston, Chris Bauer, Anna Camp, and Nathan Parsons.

Here are some goodies out of the SDCC, reported by Debi Moore:

“This season had to be about Bill and Sookie,” said Buckner. “It’s not going to be exactly what you think it is, but this show started out and worked because of the chemistry they shared… I certainly felt that we had to come back to Bill and Sookie; how we’re coming back to them, we’re not telling you.”

As for what’s ahead in the upcoming episodes, he teased, “It’s not done changing. It’s not gonna slow down any; there’s just a bit more focus on romance… We put last season’s issue to rest early on purpose. We know you love these characters so we landed them in a place where we hope you guys will be okay not with getting them anymore.”

It sounds like we’ll be more than okay with where Camp’s Sarah Newlin ends up. She told the crowd she has a big part to play in the final arc, adding, “I think I get what I deserve.” Buckner concurred, “I had to explain it to her boyfriend when he saw the punishment on set: ‘No, she deserves this!’” Yikes! Sounds like payback’s a bitch for Sarah!

For those who felt robbed of a chance to say goodbye to Tara, Buckner promised, “You haven’t seen the last of Rutina yet.”

Trammell weighed in on Sam’s outcome, “Sam’s story has been about family for the past few years… [Nicole] has a very objective view of this town and how insane it is. We’ll see how committed I am to her and how committed she is to staying.”

Lastly, Preston’s Arlene looks to finally be on track for some happiness as she embarks on a relationship with vampire Keith. “I don’t think you introduce a hot vampire on ‘True Blood’ without doing something with him… I feel like this season I got the real ‘True Blood’ experience, I got a vampire exploding in my crotch… [and] there’s something coming up with Arlene and Keith that’s unlike anything I’ve had to do on camera before.” Oh my!

HBO has finally revealed official plot details for their seventh and final season of “True Blood,” which returns June 22 at 9PM.

In episode #71: “Jesus Gonna Be Here” (airing Sunday, June 22; 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT), “A band of rogue H-vamps crashes the vampire-human mixer at Bellefleur’s, with shocking results. As Sookie (Anna Paquin) seeks refuge from accusations that she’s somehow to blame for the chaos in Bon Temps, the “one vampire for every human” plan moves forward. It was written by Angela Robinson and directed by the one and only Bill Compton, Stephen Moyer.

In episode #72: “I Found You” (airing Sunday, June 29; 9:00-10:00 p.m.), “A trio of hostages taken in the Bellefleur’s attack looks to a familiar face as a possible liberator from the H-vamps. Sookie and Jason (Ryan Kwanten) visit the neighboring town of Saint Alice, where a young woman’s diary offers clues to the potential fate of Bon Temps. Spurned by Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), a desperate Lettie Mae (Adina Porter) turns to Willa (Amelia Rose Blaire) to channel her family past. Vince whips his fellow vigilantes into a dangerous frenzy. Pam’s (Kristin Bauer van Straten) search for her maker leads her to a very familiar place.”

This was penned by Kate Barnow and directed by Howard Deutch.

Director Michael Dougherty (who also wrote X2 and Superman Returns) crafted the cult horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat back in 2007, only to see it shelved (ostensibly the studio found it difficult to market) and ultimately released to home video in 2009. Since then, the film has taken on a thriving life as a fixture among the horror crowd.

Now, the film is getting its first ever official screening at Beyond Fest. It will be held at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood on October 28th! If you live in LA and have been wanting to see this movie with a crowd, this is it! The screening will be followed by a panel that will include Dougherty along with several members of the cast (the panel will be live streamed on Legendary’s Facebook Page for those who can’t attend).

In anticipation of the screening, I discussed the film’s long history with Dougherty. I also found out which anthology films he favors most and whether or not he’d consider a sequel to Trick ‘r Treat. Check out the interview below!

What’s it like having the first official screening of this film after all this time?

It feels great. We obviously had a bunch of screenings at festivals, Comic Con, or fan events in the past, but it’s nice to have Legendary and BeyondFest sponsor this one as a thank you to all the fans who’ve kept the film going. Legendary really poured a lot of time and love into the movie this year, and I think the screening is going to be a LOT of fun. First of all, they’re holding it at the Egyptian theater in Hollywood, which is probably one of my favorite spots with a ton of cinematic history.

The movie is now a staple among horror fans. Required viewing. Why do you think it has resonated so deeply?

I think people love it for a lot of different reasons, but I think it has a unique tone and vibe that we don’t see in horror films anymore. Like a lot of films I loved growing up, that Amblin era especially, we wanted to have a sense of fun, mischief, and levity, obviously balanced with suspense, gore, and scares. A lot of today’s entertainment is obsessed with being dark, gritty, edgy, gory, etc, which just starts to get oppressive and dull after a while. Like someone trying way too hard to seem like tough guy all the time. It gets old! We went the other direction, inserted some nostalgia and dark humor into the mix, and I think that was a breath of fresh air for a lot of people — especially ones who truly appreciate the horror genre and miss being allowed to laugh and scream at the same time.

What’s your current take on horror anthologies? Any favorites?

I absolutely love anthologies. And I think it’s absolutely stupid and short-sighted that we don’t have more of them. We had a golden age of anthologies back in the 80s, when you had a least seven or eight different shows on the air. Tales from the Crypt, Tales from the Darkside, Amazing Stories, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Twilight Zone, Goosebumps, Monsters, The Outer Limits and I’m sure there are even more I’m forgetting. THEN you had the anthology feature films, Creepshow 1 & 2, Cat’s Eye, Twilight Zone, Tales from the Darkside — again, they were just everywhere, and a lot of people made a lot of money making them. And I think that era was great for writers, directors, actors, and just originality in general. You had hundreds of people churning out fun short weird ideas, some good, some bad, but at least there was a heavier emphasis on diverse original stories.

But then because of fatigue or over-saturation, we hit the 90s and the anthologies went away. Like someone pulled a switch and said “no more anthologies!”. So that creates an entire generation of film and TV execs who think the format is somehow tainted and they just repeat the same “anthologies don’t work” mantra over and over again. Of course I find this especially hilarious because back in 2001 people read the TRT script and said “no one wants vampires, werewolves, or zombies — they’re too retro”. And holy crap look where we are now.

Again, people who understand the genre know that it’s always cyclical. Every other format and subgenre of horror has kind of gone around and come around, so I really think anthologies could be the next thing. We’re already seeing the early signs of it, with the way people have embraced Trick ‘r Treat, with American Horror story smartly doing a sort of “seasonal anthology”, the V/H/S flicks, ABCs of Death, and even rumblings of a Twilight Zone reboot at CBS. Oh, and if I have my way, a new twist on the CREEPY comics of yesteryear. So yeah, with any luck the format will rise from the ashes.

Given how popular the film and Sam have become, and the fact that you’ve already revisited it with shorts, can we expect a sequel at any point?

Not right now. Maybe someday. Even though its been a few years since its release, I think Legendary, myself, and the producers are still kind of letting the dust settle on the first film. It’s been a very long strange road, and while the geek and horror community obviously embraced and supported the film from the beginning, it feels like the mainstream is only just now discovering it. So I don’t feel like we’re in any rush to make another one. Not that I would mind wandering back to the pumpkin patch, of course. But with any luck, the October 28th screening will go really well and a whole new group of people will watch it via Facebook. Then who knows what that could lead to…

In the upcoming episode written by Alexander Woo and directed by Anthony Hemingway, “Sookie (Anna Paquin) confronts her growing attraction to the mysterious Ben (Rob Kazinsky). Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) counters Burrell’s (Arliss Howard) brutal anti-vampire initiatives by hitting his nemesis where it hurts the most. Growing up all too quickly, Andy’s (Chris Bauer) faerie daughters end up keeping dangerous company. Sam (Sam Trammell) and Nicole (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) make a connection. Bill (Stephen Moyer) tasks Takahashi (Keone Young) to synthesize a new kind of blood.”

Are you ready to go back to Bon Temps? I’m not, but I’m in the minority. Season 6 of “True Blood” is set to start airing on Sunday, June 16 at 9/8c.

The series started in 2008, “In a world where vampires have “come out of the coffin”, Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress, discovers a new world of different creatures when she meets Bill Compton, a vampire.”

Also joining the HBO smash in Season 6 is acting vet Rutger Hauer (as a mysterious figure with deep ties to Sookie and Jason), “Rubicon’s” Arliss Howard (as Louisiana Governor Truman Burrell), “Friday Night Lights” grad Jurnee Smollett-Bell (as do-gooder Nicole), “90210‘s” Amelia Rose Blaire (as Howard’s onscreen daughter), “House‘s” Karolina Wydra (as a badass vamp) and All The Boys Love Mandy Lane‘s Luke Grimes as James, a Jim Morrison style vampire.

HBO’s “True Blood” is currently filming its’ sixth season for a summer premiere and it looks like Karolina Wydra (pictured above; “House”) will be joining the show. Per TVLine, she’ll be playing Violet, who “is described as a strong, sexy, possibly dangerous vamp on par with the Eric Northmans and Bill Comptons of the world.” Big surprise, I know!

The series started in 2008, “In a world where vampires have “come out of the coffin”, Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress, discovers a new world of different creatures when she meets Bill Compton, a vampire.” “True Blood’s” sixth season is slated to premiere in June 2013.

Back in 2006 (republished in 2008) we brought you the first ever review of Michael Dougherty’s awesome horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat, which eventually was put directly to home video as Warner Bros. failed to get behind it. Since then, the film starring Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker and Leslie Bibb has become a cult classic. It kills it every Halloween, and has become an annual treat for horror fans.

Whether or not Warners or Legendary Pictures will openly admit it, Trick ‘r Treat is a monster success, and should be a franchise. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not open to the idea. Nor does it mean that Dougherty has strong desires to make one.

It was reported out of the New York Comic-Con this past weekend that Dougherty wad trying to convince Legendary to allow him to make a sequel. We checked in with the artist/screenwriter-turned-director to see what he had in store for Sam and co.

We called Dougherty to see if we could get an official statement regarding a potential Trick ‘r Treat sequel and learned exclusively that, unfortunately, there’s no active development nor an attempt at a pitch. But that doesn’t mean it’s not out of the cards.

“It would be great to do, maybe some day well get to it,” Dougherty tells us. “Every year I think about it a little more, obviously.

“I hear you [fans]. I want to [do it eventually]. I’m seriously kicking it around,” he adds.

If fans really want a sequel, they should descend on the movie’s official Facebook page and make their voices heard.

And residents living in Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City should support their local Trick ‘r Treat screenings popping up over the next two weeks.

And there’s also the Fearnet 24 Hour Trick ‘r Treat Marathon forthcoming.

“The more fans continue to support and spread the movie, the more likely it is that Sam will rise from the pumpkin patch once more,” Dougherty urges.

In the film, four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband.

“True Blood” is set to return on Sunday, June 10 at 9/8c. The show’s fifth season will contain 12 episodes and will be the last season of the program to be overseen by show runner Alan Ball. Which I guess means they can throw all logic out the window after that and go totally nuts, right? The show has been so conservative, chaste and predictable while maintaining the upmost adherence to narrative cohesion. I hope they finally get some sex, nudity and blood in the mix.

“Mixing romance, suspense, mystery, and humor, the Emmy-nominated show takes place at a time when vampires have come out of the coffin and follows the on-and-off romance between waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Moyer).”

Camilla Luddington (pictured), who portrayed Lizzie on “Californication “, has landed a recurring role on the upcoming season of HBO’s vampire drama “True Blood,” which will have a special focus on fairies, reports Deadline.

Luddington will play Claudette, one of Claude’s (Giles Matthey) many sisters, who gives Sookie insight into what it means to be a faerie.

Back in February it was reports that Jacob Hopkins (Priest) had landed the recurring role as the final member of “True Blood”’s highest vampire governing body, the Vampire Authority. Hopkins plays “Alexander Drew,” one of the Authority’s chancellors who was turned to darkness at the age of 9-years-old. Alexander is described as an impetuous vamp who likes to taunt those around him. Carolyn Hennesy will fill the final vacancy on the Authority.

Season 5 is currently in production and premieres this summer on HBO.

Want to relive the season that destroyed “True Blood”?

In an early announcement to retailers, HBO is planning to bring “True Blood: The Complete Fourth Season” to Blu-ray on May 29.

“Another supernatural force has come to light in Bon Temps – witchcraft – and life for its residents will never be the same. Sookie (Anna Paquin, ‘The Piano’) finds herself entangled in a love triangle – torn between a vengeful Bill (Stephen Moyer, ‘The Double’), the new Vampire King of Mississippi, and Eric (Alexander Skarsgård, ‘Straw Dogs’), who’s not the former Viking he once was. Led by a charismatic witch named Marnie (Fiona Shaw, ‘The Tree of Life’), who threatens to let no one living or dead stand in her way, a powerful coven tempts Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis, ‘The Help’), Tara (Rutina Wesley, ‘True Blood: The Complete First Season’), and Jesus (Kevin Alejandro, ‘Red State’) with otherworldly powers. Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll, ‘True Blood: The Complete Second Season’) tries to adjust to a domestic life, while Jason (Ryan Kwanten, ‘Red Hill’) finds himself alone in werepanther territory. Arlene (Carrie Preston, ‘Doubt’) and Terry (Todd Lowe, ‘True Blood: The Complete Third Season’) come to terms with their highly unusual baby, and Alcide (Joe Manganiello, ‘Spider-Man’) finds himself caught in the clutches of an old flame.”

The box set will present every episode with 1080p (1.78:1) video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and supplements include: audio commentaries on six selected episodes, Inside the Episodes featurettes, True Blood: The Final Touches featurette, True Blood Lines, True Time Line, Enhanced viewing modes: – Character perspectives, Flashbacks/flashforwards, Vampire histories/Character bios/Hints/FYIs, and Post-production roundtable. Alan Ball is stepping down as the head writer of “True Blood”.

I’m not entirely sure how much this will impact the upcoming 5th Season of HBO’s flagship sex and vampires odyssey. I do know that the show resumed production in November, so I have to assume that the majority of the upcoming season is pretty much mapped out. The show’s luxurious (around 14 days per episode) production schedule would allow for around 7 or so segments to be in the can. So it’s safe to say that the remaining 5 are outlined at the very least and the majority of them are scripted.

Not much reason has been given for Ball’s departure from the position (he will remain on the show in some capacity, I’m guessing as a producer) except for “exhaustion”. While that’s often PR code-speak for too much hard partying – but I don’t really think that’s the case here. Perhaps Ball is literally exhausted by pushing the show to ridiculous extremes? I don’t imagine he envisioned it being as patently ridiculous as it’s become when he was first getting it off the ground in 2007-2008.

Per Forbes, “Sookie and her pals from HBO’s True Blood are losing their creator. Alan Ball, I have confirmed, will step down from being headwriter of the show about sexy vampires mixing it up in New Orleans. Explanations include exhaustion, and maybe that the show seemed like it had tired blood last season. Ball will still be with the show, I’m told, but a new regime will guide the fates of the characters into their new season. This could also very well be a money issue, as series tend to get more and more expensive as they drag on.”

If you’re going to add a vamp to the “True Blood” cast, why not look to the best fang-based franchise out there, Twilight? I’m obviously joking, but you still have to wonder if HBO purposely cast Twilight thesp Christopher Heyerdahl in yet another vampire role. That’s typecasting to the extreme, and frankly, a bit lazy.

Deadline reports that Heyerdahl is joining HBO’s hit vampire drama in a recurring role. He will portray Dieter Braun, an ancient, powerful vampire who plays a large part in the intelligence of the Authority and especially enjoys enhanced interrogation. That is familiar territory for Sanctuary alum Heyerdahl who played the ancient Volturi vampire Marcus in 3 of the Twilight movies: New Moon, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and the upcoming Part 2. Additionally, he played a demon in an arc on the CW’s “Supernatural.”

TV Line is reporting that HBO is courting Chris Meloni (who I will always remember as “Keller” from HBO’s “OZ” and from David Wain’s Wet Hot American Summer) to join the cast of “True Blood”.

The former “Law & Order: SVU” front man is circling a “major role” in the show’s upcoming fifth season. But what role? An HBO rep declined to comment, but they hear Meloni — who’s currently shooting a top-secret role in The Man of Steel — is in talks to play an incredibly powerful vampire.

If a deal comes to pass, this would be a major casting coup for “True Blood”. It would also mark a high-profile return to the small screen for Meloni following his sudden departure from SVU last spring. Chris Meloni

In a new brief, Kelly Overton (The Ring Two) and Louis Herthum (The Last Exorcism) have landed major recurring roles on the HBO vampire drama “True Blood”, says Deadline.

Overton has been booked for 6 episodes and Herthum has been tapped for 5. Deals for both include series regular options for next season. Overton will play a dirty, beautiful werewolf named Rikki who demands to know what’s become of the pack leader. Herthum will play a particularly large Marine-type werewolf who refuses to bow down before the new pack leader.

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, the Emmy-nominated show takes place at a time when vampires have come out of the coffin, and follows the on-and-off romance between waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). A fresh pile of crazy is making tracks for Bon Temps as TV Line reports that Italian actress Valentina Cervi (pictured below) is joining “True Blood’s” upcoming fifth season as a series regular — and her character sounds like the love child of Russell and Maryann.

The 35-year-old beauty will play “Salome”, an ancient vampire who is a world class seductress and fiercely intelligent. She also has quite a lot of madness in her. She is the most powerful person in every way yet capable of hiding this power when it serves her purposes.

True Blood

Once I begin covering something, it’s nearly impossible for me to stop (see Twilight, although I believe I have officially left that in the dust). Such the case with “True Blood,” HBO’s supernatural show that mixes vampires with werwolves, shape-shifters and witches. Sounds cool, no? Well, it was. In fact, it was once of my favorite ongoing series until the writers literally spit in the face of their supporters with season four. Instead of continuing to write for the horror crowd that made the show popular, they turned it into a shirtless ab-fest for girls to feel a tickle to. Even though I’ve already declared the show as dead, I’m curious to see if they take any of the criticism to heart with season five. Although I doubt it.

Anyhoo, coverage, yes, it’ll continue until it becomes hatred as pure as Twilight (most of you guys really, truly, absolutely hate that franchise with venomous rage!)

TV Line reports today that “True Blood” is introducing the woman who gave life to late werewolf packmaster Marcus. “My Name is Earl” character actress Dale Dickey (pictured below) is joining the HBO hit as Annie, Marcus’ werewolf mother. Powerful and respected within the pack due to her late son’s position, Annie is determined to perform a particular ritual.

Hopefully the ritual is to get Marcus to wear a shirt. Dale Dickey

While I have already declared “True Blood” as DEAD, HBO has officially renewed the Alan Ball-created series for a fifth season. I stand by my prediction that season five will be the final season, although it wouldn’t surprise me if they squeeze out a horribly half-assed sixth.

HBO has renewed the hit show for a 12-episode fifth season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. Created by Alan Ball, the series will begin production of new episodes later this year in Los Angeles, with debut set for summer 2012.

“Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, the Emmy-nominated show takes place at a time when vampires have come out of the coffin, and follows the on-and-off romance between waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).” Series creator Alan Ball is also an executive producer of the show, which is based on the bestselling “Sookie Stackhouse” novels by Charlaine Harris.

In the decade-plus period of time that has passed since the release of Scream 3, there’s no doubt that the horror landscape has changed significantly. In the intervening years we’ve witnessed the rise of the torture porn craze, seen a resurgence in “found footage”/shaky-cam horror, and watched helplessly as a seemingly unyielding series of remakes cluttered up our local multiplexes.

Given all of these developments, the makers of Scream 4 (releasing April 15th!) have been handed a wealth of new rules and conventions to work with, and in the following feature B-D’s Chris Eggertsen takes a look at some of the most significant ones – along with examples of the films that utilized them – that may or may not make an appearance in the upcoming sequel.

See inside for the full list, and study it carefully. Remember, knowledge is power.

Amazingly, it’s been more than eleven years since Scream 3 was released (where does the time go??), meaning there’s over a decade’s worth of new horror material that has yet to be plumbed by the self-aware franchise, now being revived with Scream 4 (coming out on April 15th). So how have they updated the once-fresh series to make it feel relevant for today’s audiences? There’s no doubt that much has changed.

Since the turn of the millennium (remember Y2K?) we’ve seen the ascension of torture porn and J-Horror, been assaulted by an insane amount of mostly crappy remakes, seen a huge resurgence in the “found footage” sub-genre (remember The Blair Witch Project?), and witnessed the coining of the term “Web 2.0” (remember dial-up?). Hell, in the year 2000 only about half the citizens in this country even owned a cell phone! (remember antennas?)

Of course, as much as the world has changed since the bygone era of Jennifer Love Hewitt worship and shitty nu-metal bands, the basic Scream template remains the same: skewer the rules and conventions of the horror genre in a clever and entertaining way. What matters this time around is just how the creative minds behind the latest entry will incorporate the new horror rules and conventions that have cropped up over the last decade or so, not to mention which ones they decide to take on (hint: given what the Scream films are, we probably won’t be seeing any long-haired “Samara”-style wraiths making an appearance).

Now, in anticipation of the release of the hugely-anticipated slasher sequel (mark your calendars!), B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen takes a fun look at ten of the key clichés and conventions from the last decade in horror that may or may not be tackled in the upcoming third installment of the legendary slasher franchise. But study them carefully – for if your own life goes all Meta and you find yourself caught in the midst of an honest-to-god slasher-movie killing spree, paying close attention just might save your skin.

“The person holding the video camera is far more likely to survive up to at least the final reel.”

Movie Examples: The Last Exorcism; Cloverfield; REC/Quarantine; Diary of the Dead

This rule is predicated on basic narrative necessity more than anything; indeed, there wouldn’t be much of a movie if the person filming the bloodbath were to bite the dust in the first or second act. As such, it would probably behoove a potential horror movie victim to volunteer for camera duty.

“Those with a serious criminal or amoral past – and/or those who have engaged in severely self-destructive behavior – are far more likely to kick the bucket than those with a relatively clean slate.”

Movie Examples: Saw I-VII

This rule really only has a basis in the Saw movies, but when you consider that the “torture porn” franchise is the most profitable and influential of the last decade, its potential for influencing a budding psychopath is pretty great. And look, it ain’t the `80s anymore. Just smoking a doobie or engaging in a little coital fun isn’t enough to guarantee certain death in a 21st century horror film. As Jigsaw showed us in all seven installments of the uber-gory series, you’re especially likely to be targeted if you’ve either engaged in some particularly naughty past behavior – think fleeing the scene of a crime, engaging in predatory lending practices, or, you know, raping and killing people – or demonstrated a lack of appreciation for life by, say, abusing drugs or attempting suicide. So while it may not keep them from ultimately waking up strapped to some sort of bizarre medieval torture device, potential victims can at least better calculate their odds of survival by tallying up their past transgressions. Also, if you didn’t take time out to appreciate your crummy life before, you’d damn well better start now.

(SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD!) “The Final Girl isn’t necessarily the final girl.”

Movie Examples: Wolf Creek; High Tension; Death Proof; Cabin Fever; Friday the 13th (remake)

While in the past we could almost always rely on the old “Final Girl” trope – i.e. the kindest and most virginal young woman of the bunch being the most likely to survive – unfortunately for the mousier contingent among us that rule isn’t quite as relevant as it used to be. For as we’ve been shown in quite a few horror flicks over the last decade -remember poor “head on a stick” Liz in Wolf Creek? – the ultimate survival of the supposed Final Girl is no longer a given.

“The kills are more brutal, drawn-out and extreme.”

Movie Examples: Saw I-VII; Hostel I & II; any film that could be classified as “torture porn”

It’s sad to say, but simple stabbings are basically old hat at this point, and not even unconventional weaponry really makes the cut anymore – indeed, by the late `80s Jason had already sorta driven that whole “let’s see what kinda damage we can do with [insert name of unlikely weapon here]!” thing into the ground (not that we don’t welcome it, necessarily; it just isn’t novel anymore). No, in the 21st century the quick kill has been replaced in many instances by drawn-out scenes of excruciating torture, a la movies like Saw, Hostel, and the wave of increasingly-brutal “French extremity” films. Note to potential victims: if there’s absolutely no hope of escape and you suspect you may be next in line for a long and painful evening at the local torture chamber, you might wanna consider engaging in a little hari-kari action before the killer has a chance to drag you off.

“If a strangely charming individual with either a German or Eastern European accent: a) proposes drinks at his/her place; b) suggests a night of kinky sex (this particularly applies if you write for the internet and/or have a basic hygiene problem); c) offers you shelter from a rain, sleet, or snowstorm, or d) otherwise seems interested in spending a little alone time with you in a remote location, you’d do best to high-tail your ass in the other direction.”

Movie Examples: Hostel I & II, The Human Centipede (First Sequence)

While the majority of `70s and `80s slasher and splatter flicks that inspired the first few Scream movies featured distinctly American-grown killers, with the introduction of the first Hostel movie we were introduced to the concept of creepy foreign people. See, not only are German and Eastern European accents scary, but the region is also apparently home to some truly perverted weirdos. In other words, don’t trust any dude with a name like Wolfgang or Dragos – it’s a recipe for certain death. Oh, and that hot chick Tatyana from the Czech Republic? Chances are she’s aiming to sell your ass to some fucked-up underground torture society in Belarus. Remember, the happy fun-time days of Shannon Elizabeth in American Pie are long over.

“Tortured back stories and vaguely sympathetic character motivations are so last century.”

Movie Examples: Hostel I & II; The Strangers; Wolf Creek; Them; Orphan; The Human Centipede (First Sequence); House of 1,000 Corpses; The Devil’s Rejects; Funny Games (remake); The Collector

Sure, the slasher revolution started with Michael Myers in Halloween – a man of “pure evil” who had “the blackest eyes” (according to Sir Donald Pleasance) – but most of the copycats that followed usually featured killers with at least some apparent reason for picking up that machete and hacking up a bunch of horny co-eds. Even the first three Scream films – despite Randy’s contention that in “the millennium, motives are incidental” – tied at least one of their killers’ motivations to some traumatic past event. Not so anymore, as over the last few years the pendulum seems to be swinging back in the “crazy-for-crazy’s-sake” Bates/Myers direction, holding true to Stu’s observation in the first Scream that “it’s a lot scarier when there’s no motive”. Need I bring up Rob Zombie’s lackluster “nurture over nature”-heavy Halloween reboot as evidence? Ah well, too late.

(SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD!) “It’s never safe to bet on `happy’ endings anymore.”

Movie Examples: Saw I-VII; Wolf Creek; The Grudge; The Ring; The Last Exorcism; Pulse; Final Destination I-IV; Paranormal Activity; The Strangers; Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning; House of 1,000 Corpses; The Skeleton Key; Them, The Collector; Funny Games (remake)

It’s no surprise that in our increasingly cynical age, the bad guy in horror films has racked up a more impressive win/loss ratio than perhaps at any other time in the history of the genre. Just look at some of the most popular and influential movies from the last decade: J-horror fare like The Grudge, The Ring and Pulse are good examples of this rule, not to mention virtually every found footage/camcorder flick ever (Paranormal Activity and The Last Exorcism being two that immediately spring to mind). Hell, just look at the final outcome of the entire Saw series – it doesn’t get much grimmer than that. In short, betting against the killer(s) isn’t near as fail-safe a wager as it used to be.

“Social subtext is big again – the key to unlocking the nature or identity of the killer(s) could lie in the ills of society itself.”

Movie Examples: Saw I-VII; Hostel I & II; Land/Diary/Survival of the Dead; Cabin Fever; Shaun of the Dead; The Hills Have Eyes (remake)

While the `80s spate of mostly mindless slasher films provided the majority of self-reflexive ammunition for the first three Scream entries, the “aughts” returned to the subtext-laden thematics of horror flicks from the late ’60s and early `70s. As such, it might give potential victims a good amount of insight (and perhaps even increase their chances of survival) if they go into “ivory tower mode” by searching out possible explanations for the mayhem in the context of society’s larger problems. Perhaps this time around Ghostface is some crazed, geriatric Tea Party adherent, aiming to cut down on the number of young Obama supporters prior to the 2012 elections? I wouldn’t necessarily rule it out.

“To increase your chances of survival, take some time to study the remakes.”

Movie Examples: Halloween; Friday the 13th; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Prom Night; When a Stranger Calls; My Bloody Valentine 3D; The Hitcher; The Amityville Horror; The Hills Have Eyes; Dawn of the Dead; House of Wax; I Spit on Your Grave; The Omen; Last House on the Left; The Fog; The Crazies; The Stepfather; Black Christmas; Sorority Row; probably more I’m not thinking of

The most ubiquitous horror trend over the last decade is undoubtedly the remake phenomenon, meaning potential victims can’t merely look to the originals any longer to uncover the keys to their survival. While certainly a few of the films are forehead-slappingly derivative of their original source material, others have changed the conventions up a bit and, painful as it may be, it would behoove those who find themselves in the midst of a bloody killing spree to add a shitload of these bad boys to the top of their Netflix queue. Just pray you can get through them all before the killer catches you passed out from boredom on the living room couch.

“When in doubt, do the opposite of everything you learned in the first three Scream movies.”

Movie Examples: Scream I-III

As one character in the Scream 4 trailer smartly points out, “the unexpected is the new cliché”. In other words, potential victims will significantly increase their chances of survival if they do the opposite of whatever rules of slasher-dom they were urged to follow in the first three entries. Feeling a little horny? Go have sex with someone, quickly! Acting the part of the shameless, dirty slut just might save your neck. “Magical cigarette” being passed around at the party after prom? If you value your life, you’d do well to take a puff. Also, work the phrase “I’ll be right back” into every conversation you can, even when it isn’t 100% warranted. It may end up annoying the shit out of your friends and loved ones, but if you enjoy breathing you’d do best to ignore their bitching. Also, dudes – get off your sorry asses and try out for the football team. And while you’re at it, start acting on all those buried Alpha male instincts of yours and push a science geek or two up against a locker (further “survival points” will be awarded for wedgies and toilet dunking). As for all the ladies out there – for the love of god, get a freakin’ boob job and join the cheerleading squad. In this day and age, those puritanical attitudes you’ve been harboring could equal death.

Over the course of production there were a flurry of rumors that genre writer Ehren Kruger (The Ring, The Ring Two, Blood and Chocolate, The Skeleton Key, Scream 3) had come aboard to rewrite much of Kevin Williamson’s Scream 4 script. While it was more rumor than fact, no party ever really openly spoke about the situation.

Now that Craven is is post production, with an April 15 release date in sight, the iconic director opened up to UK mag Total Film and revealed exactly what went down on set in Ann Arbor, Michigan. You’ll find the full story inside…
Excerpts from Total Film:

On the screenplay: “During production, Craven tweeted that he was “no longer in control of the script” as Scream 3 writer Ehren Kruger came in to rework Williamson’s draft. “I was just stating the fact,” he recalls. “In some ways it’s a Wes Craven film, and in way it’s not entirely, because it’s not a script I have control of. It’s ultimately controlled by what the studio wants in the script. My job is much more bringing whatever experience and expertise and creativity I can.” He pauses. “Look, there was a bumpy period when things shifted over from Kevin to Ehren. I signed up to do a script by Kevin and unfortunately that didn’t go all the way through the shooting. But it certainly is Kevin’s script and concept and ideas and themes.”

On a potential new trilogy: “And would Craven be up for any more if this Screamed up enough box office? “When I initially met with Kevin, he sketched out what the next two would be, and I found it really fascinating,” he concludes. “A lot depends on whether they come up with scripts to flesh out. But certainly, I’m up for it, if the script is there. It’s a fascinating thing to do two trilogies in a career.”
