Honestly, we don’t show enough fan artwork around here.

It’s a shame, since it’s pretty easy to see how talented horror fans are when it comes to paying tribute to their favourite film/video game. Case in point: Mark Scicluna, a senior illustrator for Rockstar Games, has recently done up some awesome Tales From The Crypt-styled covers for Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and Resident Evil 4.

Mark’s also done a few other horror pieces, including one for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, God of War, The Last of Us and more.

You can also check out his Instagram for more art.

Props to Resident Evil Related for this one.

While the majority of these 5-inch by 5-inch pieces are from the NES, SNES and Genesis, there are a couple from the Atari 2600. You’ve got ones from Friday The 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Decap Attack and Castlevania. And yes, you can own them.

The thing is, these are all one-offs, so once a piece is gone, it’s gone. Definitely check these out if you’re into collecting recreations of classic video game art.

Just when you thought Gritty was the scariest monster attacking Philadelphia this Halloween season, a group of artists who call themselves Group X have installed a massive purple octopus creature in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, dubbing the exhibit “Sea Monsters HERE.” Artists Filthy Luker and Pedro Estrellas created the tentacles, which are actually inflatable.

As of this past Sunday, the exhibit was completed, with the octopus bursting out of the Navy Yard’s Building 611. It’ll be on display through November 16th, visible from the street.

PhillyMag.com notes, “Sea Monsters HERE is free and open to the public for viewing during the Navy Yard’s public hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. If you’re wondering how to get there (never been to the Navy Yard?), we’ve got you covered.

Since the tentacles are all inflatable, they sway in the wind and make the creature appear to be living and moving around inside the building. How creepy is that?! Gotta love it.

Metalheads rejoice!  Since 2004, Vincent Castiglia has been painting surreal images in his own blood. His images examine life, death, and the human condition.  From Waterfront Productions, comes the feature documentary Bloodlines: The Art and Life of Vincent Castiglia by filmmaker John Borowski (H.H. Holmes: America’s First Serial Killer).

The reasons why Castiglia began painting in blood are explored in this emotional rollercoaster ride portrayed on film.  From childhood abuse to debilitating drug use, Castiglia paints with pieces of himself both literally and metaphorically.  Borowski states:

“This is a deeply personal film for Vincent and I am honored to have worked closely with him on the film. I feel many people will see this film as inspirational, even though it is a dark ride through pain and suffering. Vincent’s life journey, much like his art, reflects both the dark and ultimately the light that shines through the darkness.”

Comedian and actress Margaret Cho, who commissioned Castiglia to paint her portrait in her blood, is interviewed in the film.  Other celebrities featured in the film are Gregg Allman, Damien Echols, Kerry King & Gary Holt of Slayer, Randy Blythe of Lamb of God, and record executive Michael Alago.  After a successful Kickstarter fundraising campaign, production of the film spanned from 2014 to 2017, filming on location in the United States (New York City, Los Angeles, Louisiana, Chicago, Oregon) and worldwide (Singapore and Switzerland).  Borowski was honored to film in the Switzerland studio and museum of legendary artist H.R. Giger, who designed the iconic Xenomorph for the 20th Century Fox movie, Alien.  Borowski is currently seeking U.S. and International distribution for Bloodlines.

As it turns out, Ouija Boards do more than contact the dead.

Describing himself as an artist who specializes in “dark surrealism” and “pop surrealism,” New Zealander Carl Ingram‘s most unique series most definitely fits that bill.

As recently profiled by Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, Ingram has created a one-of-a-kind device that’s being fittingly referred to as the “Ouija Spinner.

Ripley’s explains, “Ingram spins a vinyl record covered in paint on a Ouija board on top of a fidget spinner. It’s the most eclectic blend of retro style, occult fascination, and pop-culture fad that you could make.”

The site elaborates, “Ingram was interested in dark surrealism and horror movies leading him to experiment with different ways of painting. The paint he uses is an acrylic base with “secret ingredients.” After painting the vinyl record white to make the paint stick and show up, he attaches it to the Ouija board and spins. The centrifugal force spreads the paint out from the center, and as more colors are added, mysterious and random shapes come into being. Once the record dries, he goes in afterward with oil paints to enhance certain patterns that appear in the paint. The shading and depth created allows some spooky “creatures” to take shape.”

Ouija Board + Fidget Spinner + Vinyl Record = kickass art. Go figure!

Yes, we realize the whole “sexy horror icons” thing is kinda weird and totally played out, but Williams’ “Haunt Couture” art series is pretty awesome, imagining what it’d look like if a fashion designer put together a horror movie-themed show on Halloween night.

Walking the runway for that make-believe fashion show? Pennywise, The Babadook, Annabelle, the Saw franchise’s Billy puppet, Chucky and Tiffany!

Deviant Art’s Pedro Sena (Lordigan) is responsible for this epic mash-up art, which presents The Evil Dead in the style of the original art for 1993’s Doom.

Rather than a space marine blasting away demons, Sena’s Evil Dead poster casts Ash Williams in the role of “Doomguy,” who is of course blasting away Deadites.

Armed with his chainsaw hand and trusty boomstick, Ash takes the fight to a legion of iconic Evil Dead characters, including Ed, Henrietta and even his evil self!

What? You thought Jason was the only one allowed to wear a hockey mask?

You may have heard that Philadelphia Flyers prospect Alex Lyon recently wore a goalie mask adorned with images of the new iteration of Pennywise. The awesome mask went viral, and we’re thinking it may have inspired this fun new art project from HalloweenCostumes.com.

With Halloween approaching and the hockey season just getting underway, the website’s team whipped up images of 12 hockey masks inspired by horror villains!

Another thing to look forward to in October is sports,” the site wrote today. “While baseball season is wrapping up with the playoffs and football is in full swing, basketball and hockey are just beginning. Both sports provide great entertainment all winter long, but hockey may have greater ties to Halloween. The obvious case being that Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th movies wears an actual hockey mask. In a year that’s featured sequels and reboots to some of horror’s most notable characters, we decided to combine them with hockey in this fun series of artwork.”

Check out the masks below, inspired by everyone from Freddy to Black Phillip!

In 1974, the horror genre changed forever.

Wes Craven undoubtedly brought a new level of realism to horror cinema with The Last House on the Left in 1972, but one could argue that Tobe Hooper took things one step further with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre just two years later.

Gritty, disturbingly authentic and with a hulking villain who remains one of the most terrifying to ever grace the screen, Hooper’s seminal masterpiece shocked the world in 1974; as Rob Zombie wrote in his touching tribute to Hooper on Rolling Stone this week, “It was a genuine American nightmare caught on film for all the world to see.”

The low-budget film, made in Texas, sure made an impression on Hollywood and, well, pretty much everyone who saw it, inspiring and influencing countless filmmakers to pick up a camera and make their own horror movie. Filmmakers like Rob Zombie, whose debut House of 1000 Corpses owes a huge debt to Chain Saw.

Outside of the film world, artists have been showing their love for Hooper’s game-changer with their own tributes to Leatherface and his twisted family, and today we wanted to highlight some of the most impressive art tributes we’ve come across for the film. Specifically, we’re spotlighting alternate posters that fans have conjured up.

Here are 13 of the very best, in honor of the late Tobe Hooper’s enduring legacy.

He calls them “the lost race of deodorant people.”

When you’re creative, you can literally find inspiration all around you, and artist Steve Casino is living proof of that. Casino, in addition to making wooden pull toys that we’ve profiled here on BD in the past, is known as “the painter of nuts”; after all, his specialty is hand-painting peanuts and turning them into pop culture icons.

Yes, peanuts. Casino saw a peanut one day and thought, “Hey, I could turn this into Freddy Krueger!” And we can only assume he was applying deodorant one random day when he had a similar thought: “Hey, I could turn this into a monster!

Casino’s deodorant monsters are made using travel size tubes, and he brilliantly uses the clear plastic domes to house their brains. I can’t say I ever imagined a monster living inside my deodorant, but I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to look at a stick the same way again.

The unique art pieces are made of polymer clay, wire, and acrylics and come sealed in a glass dome. If you want one, e-mail Steve at itpopart@gmail.com.

I was ripped from my body… but still, I was alive.”

There’s a darkness to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter stories, seven of which have been released to date, and artist Dylan Pierpont has brought it front and center for an art series he has appropriately dubbed “Scary Potter.

The art turns each Harry Potter book into a decidedly dark and sinister horror movie poster, bringing out the scary side of Rowling’s family-friendly stories.

A while back I was thinking about a few of the stories and characters that had a big influence on me growing up. And while Harry Potter was by far and away the most age appropriate of the group, I couldn’t help but think about how dark some the themes became over the course of the series,” Pierpont explained on his Facebook page. “Scary Potter was born out of a love for every dark and thematic thread woven throughout the HP series.”

Turn out the lights and prepare for nightmares.

In the three-book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series, folklorist Alvin Schwartz offered up alarming tales of horror, dark revenge, and supernatural events. Those stories were brought to life by artist Stephen Gammell, whose whimsical and deeply terrifying illustrations helped make the books iconic slices of nightmare fuel.

The Scary Stories books served to bite countless young readers with the horror bug back in the ’80s and ’90s, and one artist in particular has been so deeply inspired by Gammell’s illustrations that his own art looks like it was ripped straight out of the pages of Scary Stories books you’ve never read.

Andy Sciazko, who illustrated the Scary Stories tribute book Nightmare Soup, has mastered that iconic Gammell style, and we wanted to share some of his awesome tribute art with you here today. If you’re a fan of the Scary Stories books, particularly the drawings, you are going to LOVE what Sciazko is bringing to the table.

Grab selects prints over in Andy’s Etsy shop and follow him on Instagram.

Well this is just upsetting to even look at.

I’ve seen countless horror movies throughout my life, but there’s still nothing more horrifying to me than the process by which a Face Hugger becomes a Xenomorph in the Alien franchise – particularly, in Ridley Scott’s original classic.

The mere thought of a Face Hugger latching onto my face, plunging down my throat, and creating an alien lifeform inside my body is one of the most unsettling ever to be conjured up, and I still have a hard time watching Kane suffer that fate to this very day.

Please lord, don’t let me die THAT way.

Artist David Graham, the man responsible for those incredible MEG posters we recently shared, just unleashed two new Alien fan posters inspired by the Xenomorph life cycle, and together they work as deeply horrifying companions to one another.

In the first print, we’re thrust down the throat of an unlucky Face Hugger victim. In the second, David brilliantly outlines a Face Hugger inside the human skeleton.

You rule, David.

What would the Jaws poster look like… painted by Monet?

While many studios may not care so much about movie poster art these days, most fans realize how important it is and always has been. The posters for our favorite movies are as iconic to us as the movies themselves, and most of us proudly hang them in our houses to show just how much we love those movies.

Those posters are art, no matter who says otherwise. But what if our favorite movie posters were actually designed by history’s most important artists? The website Invaluable set out to answer that question, unveiling “six famous movie posters reimagined as paintings” this week.

They’re not all horror, but Jaws, Silence of the Lambs and Ghostbusters did make the cut. Their posters have been reimagined as paintings by Claude Monet, Salvador Dali and Roy Lichtenstein. The site explains…

The movie poster is traditionally the audience’s first glimpse of what to expect in a film, making it a very important marketing tool. We imagined what these 20th century pop culture relics would look like if they were designed by some of history’s most important artists.

See the rest of the gallery over on Invaluable, where it’s presented as a fun quiz.

Now this is how you do mash-up art.

Mattel’s Masters of the Universe toy line is unquestionably one of the most iconic of all time, launching a media franchise that’s still going strong to this day. The toys, originally released in 1982, introduced characters such as He-Man and Skeletor (special shout-out to my man Gwildor), and the designs are instantly recognizable even to those who never played with them.

Using those retro designs and Mattel’s packaging art as inspiration, artist Phil Postma recently created his own line of faux Masters of the Universe toys. Actually, since they mash together Masters characters with legendary movie monsters, he’s fittingly calling them the Monsters of the Universe!

Postma explains the fun project…

If you love classic monsters and barbarians, this is for you! Merged two of my favorite things (Classic Monsters and Masters of the Universe) together and came up with this, “Monsters of the universe” action figures. Ya, I know they are not really action figures but they are the best I can do with the resources at hand.

You can see more of Postma’s art on his Minion Factory blog and in his Red Bubble shop.

This past February (the 27th, to be exact) marked the 30th anniversary of A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors, one of the most beloved horror sequels of all time. We already celebrated in grand style with a 30th anniversary screening in Philly and a live Don Dokken performance to go along with it, which was a highlight of my year.

Being a mega fan of Dream Warriors, I was excited to see that incredibly talented artist Steven Holliday just paid tribute to the Elm Street franchise’s third installment in his own way, unleashing an alternate poster that is one of the coolest I’ve ever seen.

Spent 9 months of my life designing this,” Holliday noted. “Started October 15, 2016 and just got it back from the printers a week ago. Nightmare on Elm Street 3 is one of the greatest sequels and one of the best horror movies ever made not to mention one of my faves. 2017 marks its 30 year anniversaryCan’t thank Delicious Design League enough for knocking this print job out of the park.”

The 24″ x 36″ prints will be available this Friday at Gallery 1988: LA for their “30 Years Later” tribute show. Subsequently, Holliday says that “Artist Proofs of Blue as well as the Artist Exclusive Green Variant will be available on my site sometime Saturday afternoon after Gallery1988 posts the remaining copies from the show.”

Did you pick up issue #6 of The Invincible Jason X yet?

It’s pretty fair to say that comic books, thanks in no small part to the surge of comic book movies in recent years, are currently more popular than ever before. A few horror properties can currently be found on the shelves of comic shops around the world, with upcoming ones based on Elvira and Pumpkinhead just announced this week.

But what would other horror franchises look like in the world of comics? Artist Cory Holliday (@VileConsumption) has mastered the technique of replicating vintage-style comic book cover art, and he’s been hard at work turning his favorite horror movies into faux comics.

These “horrid throwbacks,” as he calls them, imagine films such as Scream, Halloween 3, Fright Night and Cloverfield as retro comic books, and they’re so perfect that they could easily pass for being real.

They’re sadly not, but you can grab prints of the art in the Vile Consumption shop!

Be afraid. Be very afraid. And totally grossed out.

As you’ve probably heard, Sleight director J.D. Dillard is currently attached to direct a new take on The Fly, which began its life as a 1958 film that decades later spawned David Cronenberg’s practical effects-heavy remake. The transformation sequences in Cronenberg’s film are among the best in the genre’s history, and we can only hope Dillard makes sure to nail that important aspect of the story.

In the meantime, fans have begun making their own concept art for fresh takes on the iconic Brundlefly transformation. Just last month we showed you a 3D artist named Calvin’s incredibly impressive take on the human-to-fly transformation, and now Canadian artist Benjamin Parker has brought his own vision to life over on ArtStation.

A series of six images from Parker turn an ordinary man into a hideous monster, beginning with the gradual “decline” phase and culminating in the full-on transformation. The end result is pretty spectacular, looking a bit more lanky and streamlined than Cronenberg’s man-fly. We like it. We like it a lot.

What do you think?

VHS lives forever.

Watching movies at home is currently easier and more affordable than it’s ever been, largely thanks to VOD rentals that are available for just a few bucks at the push of a button. You don’t even have to put on pants to rent the latest new release horror movie, which is pretty great for shut-ins like myself.

And yet, as easy as movie renting may now be, there’s something I just can’t help but miss about the video store experience. I’m of course not alone on that, as many people (horror fans in particular) are still holding onto all that nostalgia for dear life. Yes, video stores are (mostly) long dead, as is the VHS format, but the past is very much still alive in the hearts of many.

One fan who clearly still has a whole lot of love for the heyday of the VHS tape is an artist who goes by the name Steelberg. He specializes in making custom VHS cases that imagine today’s horror movies as rentals on the shelves of small town mom and pop video shops, and he nails the aesthetic so well that they just might transport you back to the “good old days.”

Many websites in recent years have spotlighted Steelberg’s work, so you’ve probably seen a lot of the stuff he’s done in the past. But we wanted to share some of his newer work with you today. Below you’ll find (faux) VHS tapes for recent faves such as Get Out, Don’t Breathe and The Final Girls!

Javier Botet will play The Leper, and Nicholas Hamilton plays Henry Bowers. The cast also includes Owen Teague, who plays bully Patrick Hocksetter. Bill Skarsgard is our new Pennywise.

Who doesn’t love Jason Lives?!

Easily one of the most beloved installments in the Friday the 13th franchise is director Tom McLoughlin’s Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives, released in 1986. McLoughlin inserted enough meta humor into his sequel to make it stand out from the pack, taking the series into a bold new direction and injecting much-needed life into the simple stalk ‘n slash premise.

Give its beloved status, Jason Lives has spawned a whole lot of awesome fan art over the years, and we’re absolutely loving what artist Andrew Peters just came up with for the film.

Inspired by the sixth installment’s iconic RV scene (the image of Jason standing atop the overturned RV is still one of the franchise’s coolest), Peters’ Jason Lives poster is the very first print to come from his just-launched art brand, 200X.

“Here it is, my Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives 11×17 print, the first of many original pieces to come from my new brand, 200X,” says Peters. “I wanted to do a trashy, Italian slasher style poster for my favorite entry in the series. I’ve always felt this was the most stylish & atmospheric Friday film.”

Be sure to follow Peters on Instagram so you’ll know when prints are available!

He lives in a pineapple under the sea… and he’s coming for your soul.

Kids the world over absolutely love SpongeBob Squarepants, the charming star of the same-named animated series that premiered back in 1999 and is still going strong to this day. The bright yellow sea sponge, who wears a white shirt, red tie and brown pants, may seem cute and cuddly in the world of animation, but oh boy does that cuteness go away when he enters our world.

3D artist Miguel Vasquez has terrified the internet this week with his “Best Friends Forever” project, which imagines both SpongeBob and friend Patrick Star (a pink starfish in the animated series) as, well, real life monstrosities. The speed sculpts were rendered in Keyshot, and they’re totally NSFC – not… safe… for… children.

Vasquez says that he’s working on Squidward next.

We’re not so sure we can handle that.

What to do with all those old VHS tapes?

As digital codes begin to overtake even relatively new formats like DVD and Blu-ray, VHS tapes from our childhoods are becoming more and more obsolete. Like that bad E.T. video game before them, unloved VHS tapes are filling up landfills across the world… but thankfully, not everyone has an “out with the old, in with the new” outlook on life.

Visual artists Nan & Patrick Massobrio, aka NMPM, are a couple of artists living and working in Monaco. From their official website’s bio, “they want to create an art that is respectful of the environment, using recycled materials such as vintage VHS, turned obsolete but still carrying many moviegoer’s memoriesNMPM breath new life to these objects through contemporary artworks.”

NMPM’s Video Store Memories series pays tribute to the movies and icons they discovered via VHS rental, and it includes a host of horror icons such as Michael Myers, Leatherface, Freddy Krueger, Pinhead, and even Return of the Living Dead 3‘s Julie Walker. VHS tapes serve as the heads of each icon, with the bodies painted on a surface underneath. Coolest of all, actual VHS tape is used to add hair to each character!

Princess Leatherface has a certain ring to it, no?

I have no idea who started the whole trend, but the Disney princesses have been used for so much mash-up art in recent years that I think it’s officially become an internet “thing.” Artists across the web have re-imagined Disney’s most iconic princesses as everything from superheroes to hot dogs (no seriously), and now they’ve been turned into your favorite horror icons!

Artist Kate Maxwell is the woman behind the new “Horror Princesses” art series, which imagines the likes of Belle, Rapunzel, Princess Jasmine and Snow White as horror maniacs such as Predator, Pinhead, Leatherface and The Ring‘s Samara/Sadako. We’re not convinced Disney would approve, but we sure do.

Meet the Horror Princesses below!

What are you waiting for?!?!

Most horror fans may not look back on the ’90s as being one of the genre’s best decades (it’s certainly not), but as someone who spent much of his youth in that decade, I have an extreme amount of love in my heart for the whole of ’90s cinema. There’s a certain feel that ’90s movies have; for me, watching them is like traveling back in time to my own youth. So as you might imagine, I have a serious soft spot for ’90s horror.

And one of my favorites is I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Released in the direct wake of Wes Craven’s Scream, a game-changer if there ever was one, I Know What You Did Last Summer is in many ways the quintessential ’90s slasher flick. The cast was of course led by Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played final girl Julie James. Julie battled (and survived) killer fisherman Ben Willis in the film, and heroin and villain are mashed together in the latest addition to artist Matthew Therrien’s “Final Girls & Cinema Survivors” art series.

It’s the 15th piece in the series, which pays homage to some of the most iconic heroes in the horror and film genre, and you can check it out below.

Also feel free to browse the entire series and grab prints in Therrien’s shop!

What’s that? You want more Dark Souls swag? Well, a user by the name of Dae has kindly pointed us to their store with a couple of small pieces to add a little flair to your backpack/notebook/whatever.

Two Crows Printing has created pins and stickers of the Red Eye Orb and Warrior Of Sunlight emblem, respectively. Both look spot on when compared to their in-game representations, and come on their own specific black backer cards for an added touch. The Red Eye Orb is a soft enamel pin measuring 1.25″ designed by artist 8bitdeathgrip, while the Warrior of Sunlight pin is made of die struck gold metal, measures 1.5″, and was created by 8bitpill.

The pins can either be bought individually for $10 USD each, or together in a bundle with the Sticker Pack for $20 USD. The stickers themselves are 3.5″ by 3.5″, with the Red Eye Orb printed on vinyl adhesive and laminated, and the Warrior of Sunlight sticker cut from gold cast vinyl. If you just want the stickers, you can plunk down $6 USD for them.

And if you’re in the mood for more video game items, you can also check out Two Crows Printing’s Etsy Store page for more pins, posters, and even custom business cards. Praise the sun!

This is one of the coolest tributes to Friday the 13th we’ve ever seen.

Artist David Arseneau is a massive fan of the Friday the 13th franchise, and he’s decided to show off that passion in a really unique way. Now on display at Montreal’s Darling Foundry art gallery (through May 21st) is Arseneau’s lovingly-crafted tribute to his favorite slasher series, which he describes as an “obsessive art project” that saw him paying tribute to literally every single location, character and kill in the entire franchise.

David explains the ambitious project…

My DIY Friday the 13th museum exhibition includes a giant map of Crystal Lake and it’s surroundings, towns, camps, and even New York city; a makeshift video game of the map where the player walks around the Friday the 13th universe; hand drawn portraits of all three hundred characters from all films; a visual archive of all the culture-specific items and weapons that are used in the Friday the 13th films; and twelve faithfully rendered, hand drawn movie posters from all twelve movies.

Check out a video walkthrough of the insane exhibit below, including a playthrough of the Friday the 13th video game that takes Jason to every iconic locale from the series!

Up-and-coming horror artist Marcela “The Exorstitch” Piñeda seems to be making a habit of holiday-related horror artwork. After her collection of Easter prints was released back in April, she returns with a new set of mother-themed horror prints in a collection she calls “All of Them Mothers” just in time for Mother’s Day. If your mom appreciates the horror genre, these could make a fantastic gift for her this Sunday!

Carrie

Maybe it’s best not to give this one to your mother, as Margaret White isn’t exactly the best role model, but it’s still a pretty nifty image. What mother wouldn’t want this hanging in her living room every day? It would be one hell of a conversation starter.

Mother's Day Carrie

Coraline

Coraline doesn’t get enough credit for being one of the better family horror films to come out in the 2000s. The film is quite clever and surprisingly scary for a children’s movie. No part of the film is scarier than Teri Hatcher’s(!) Other Mother who, in her final incarnation, is revealed to be a vicious spider-like beast with sewing needles for hands and buttons for eyes. Hang this in your house to make your children appreciate the mother they’ve got.

Mother's Day Coraline

Rosemary’s Baby

Piñeda uses one of Rosemary’s Baby‘s most iconic scenes for inspiration in this twist on the film’s poster. Does your mom love Satan?

Mother's Day Rosemary's Baby

Psycho

Is there a more well-known horror mother than Norma Bates? Granted, this is one of the most sunny and positive portrayals of Norma’s corpse, especially considering the haunting ads that were used for Bates Motel‘s final season. With the rainbow background and Norma’s rosy cheeks, this is probably the best a decayed corpse has ever looked.

Mother's Day Psycho

American Mary

The Soska Sister’s American Mary is one of the more underrated horror films of this decade, so I’m particularly happy to see it get some recognition in the gallery. Everyone needs a little more Katharine Isabelle in their lives.

Mother's Day American Mary

The Babadook

Regardless of how you feel about Jennifer Kent’s critically acclaimed film, you have to admit that hanging this in your child’s room (or at least threatening to) would be a surefire way to get them to clean their rooms every week!

Mother's Day The Babadook

Which piece of Mother’s Day art is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!

Dating back to nearly a year ago, we’ve been talking about artist Matthew Therrien’s “Final Girls & Cinema Survivors” art series, which sees the Canadian artist mash together horror’s most iconic final girls and the villains they were tough enough to survive. Therrien’s beautiful paintings, lush with color, literally put the villains and the final girls side-by-side, which makes for striking art pieces that highlight the beauty, brains and badassery of our favorite horror heroines.

Up to this point, we’ve shown off 9 pieces from the series including tributes to iconic survivors such as Laurie Strode, Nancy Thompson and Ellen Ripley, but we wanted to do an update now that a handful of new pieces have been added to the series. Therrien is now up to piece number 14 in the “Final Girls & Cinema Survivors” series, with the latest additions including Jess Bradford from Black Christmas, Stevie Wayne from The Fog, Lila Crane from Psycho, Trish Jarvis from Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and even, though he’s obviously not a female, Mike from Phantasm.

Yes, Dracula totally had a mustache.

We all have images in our minds of what the most iconic literary-based horror villains look like, but oddly enough, those images often don’t look at all the way the characters were originally written; the images in our heads, of course, come from the films that brought those characters to the screen. But what would horror icons like Jack Torrance, Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter look like if their respective movies stayed 100% faithful to the source material? One fan has taken it upon himself to answer that very question.

Filmmaker and digital artist Brian J. Davis has for a few years now been using commercially available law enforcement composite sketch software to draw up famous literary characters based specifically on how they’re described in the books they appear in. And you might be surprised how different his drawings are from what the movies have shown us. For example, did you know that Robert Bloch’s description of Norman Bates included phrases such as “plump face,” “rimless glasses” and “thinning sandy hair“?!

Check out the fascinating art below and see more over on The Composites!

ANNIE WILKES – MISERY

CARRIE WHITE – CARRIE

CLARICE STARLING – THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

DRACULA – BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA

THE MONSTER – MARY SHELLEY’S FRANKENSTEIN

HANNIBAL LECTER – THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

JACK TORRANCE – THE SHINING

Fold paper, create Xenomorph!

Chan Pak Hei (aka Kade Chan) is the artist behind the Hong Kong Origami Studio, founded in ’05. Chan’s specialty? As his company’s title suggests, he’s a professional origami artist, and the things he can do with paper will blow your mind. With over 10 years of experience, Chan is one of the best in the world, and he whipped up an Aliens-inspired creation that’s a sight to behold.

Using only paper, meticulously folded and then hand-painted, Chan made a highly detailed replica of the Warrior Alien seen in James Cameron’s 1986 sequel. The model, which measures 25cm tall (just under 10 inches), was made using 57 pieces of uncut square Earth Paper. It was actually made back in 2014, but has gotten new life with the impending release of Alien: Covenant.

Chan Pak Hei, Kade is a professional origami artist and product/graphic designer, graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University – School of Design (Bachelor of Arts (BA) – Industrial and Product Design). Born in 1993, he started folding paper in 2005, after he joined the Hong Kong Origami Society at the age of 12. Now Kade Chan has more than 100 original origami designs and over 10 years experience on origami teaching.

Check out the stunning creation below!

It’s almost like seeing your favorite poster art for the first time.

After artists get done creating movie poster art, the art is then covered in all sorts of text, including the movie’s title and often even a list of credits. Of course, a movie poster doesn’t do much good if it doesn’t even tell you what movie it’s advertising, but wouldn’t it be cool to go back in time and look at all of your favorite poster art BEFORE all that necessary text was slapped on it?

Over on Imgur, user “joinyouinthesun” uploaded a massive gallery of hi-res, totally textless art from his favorite movies – thankfully for us, he’s clearly a big time horror fan. Presumably using Photoshop, he removed all of the text from the iconic posters for films such as Alien, The Thing, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jaws and Candyman, allowing the art itself to fully shine.

Yeah, we’re totally buying this.

Horror movie poster art just doesn’t get any better than the hand-painted posters that artist Matthew Peak whipped up for the original five films in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Peak did such a fantastic job with his poster for Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, one of the most iconic movie posters of all time, that he stuck around for the majority of the franchise – it’s impossible to imagine the Elm Street films without Peak’s art attached to them, as it was his art that initially drew many to the franchise on the shelves of their local video shop back in the ’80s.

Peak’s Elm Street art damn sure won me over as a kid.

Now, all these years later, the folks over at Bottleneck Gallery have partnered with Matthew Peak for a brand new poster that brings the artist’s one-of-a-kind talents to a whole different horror franchise. Just unveiled and going up for sale at 12pm EST today, Bottleneck’s Halloween poster was hand-painted by Matthew Peak, and two slightly different versions are available.

Bottleneck explains:

Matthew’s print encapsulates both the old-school movie poster feel of classic horror film art, while bringing some modern printing magic into the mix. The classic image of Michael Myers’ weapon of choice in Halloween, a kitchen knife, has a reflective varnish layer that’s just killer in person.

Check out the prints below and head over to Bottleneck Gallery to learn more and grab yours!

Those who remember Activision’s NES adaptation of Ghostbusters II know how ridiculously hard that game was. I couldn’t get even past the first driving portion when I first played it. It wasn’t until years later that I found out about the HAL Laboratory version (released in Europe and Japan only) called New Ghostbusters II, which was totally different, and far more fun (in my opinion, at least).

So, why am I telling you this? A user on Reddit today posted a photo of a New Ghostbusters II reproduction cartridge with a sweet dripping green slime translucent case. The maker of the repro cart, Mr. Wizard Reproductions, actually made the carts last year, in both green and pink glow-in-the-dark slime versions. According to him, the photo posted on Reddit is actually the first proof he made of the cart, which sadly doesn’t glow in the dark.

Mr. Wizard has also done other cool reproduction carts, including a dripping blood cart of Splatterhouse 2&3, a romhack of Zombies Ate My Neighbours! called Oh No! More Zombies Ate My Neighbours in a green with red splatter cart, a Freddy Vs. Jason hack of Friday The 13th in a blood-spattered cart (signed by Robert Englund himself!) and more! Check his stuff out when you get a chance.

It’s good to be King. I mean, I wouldn’t know. But it must be.

As we told you last week, the folks over at Gallery 1988’s Los Angeles locale on Melrose Avenue are currently paying tribute to the life and career of Stephen King with a special art exhibit that’s on display right now. The opening reception of the appropriately titled “KING” took place this past Friday night, and you’ll be able to view all the awesome art through May 27th.

If you don’t live in or near LA and therefore won’t be able to attend, the gallery has got ya covered. All the pieces have been uploaded online for virtual viewing, and you can even purchase prints and original art through Gallery 1988’s website. Some of our personal favorite pieces pay tribute to classic King tales such as Pet Sematary, Christine, Creepshow, Cujo and Carrie.

This should be on your wall right now. And mine.

We simply cannot get enough of artist Christopher Shy’s work, which we’ve covered a couple times recently: Artist’s Watercolor Horror Movie Posters Will Melt Your Mind & More Watercolor Horror Movie Posters to Melt Your Mind. Shy’s posters for films like The Fog, Halloween and Alien are visually stunning works of art that are quite unlike any other movie posters you’ve ever seen before. And today we’re happy to share yet another incredible piece from Shy, this one paying tribute to the upcoming release of Andy Muschietti’s “re-adaptation” of Stephen King’s IT.

The IT art depicts Pennywise emerging from a sewer underneath the town of Derry, Maine, and it’s as beautifully haunting as the posters we’ve come to expect from Shy. He also whipped up a modified “neon” color variant and even a version of the art that removes Pennywise completely. Even without the killer clown, I think you’ll find Shy’s IT poster to be a visual stunner.

Check out the three versions below and head over to Art of Ronin to pick up prints.

We can’t escape Stephen King lately. We’re not complaining.

With all kinds of new movies and TV series’ coming soon, one could say that Stephen King has never been more popular than he’s about to be. Mind you, King has never stopped being one of the most prolific and relevant authors in the world, but at this point I think it’s safe to say that a full-blown Stephen King renaissance has begun. And goddamn is that awesome.

Speaking of which, the folks at over Gallery 1988 have teamed with a handful of artists to celebrate the incredible career of Stephen King with a special tribute art show that opens this coming Friday night at their Los Angeles location on 7308 Melrose Avenue.

Can’t wait? Don’t live in LA? Have no fear, because we’ve been exclusively provided with an early first look at four pieces of kickass art that will be on display as part of the group exhibit.

How hyperbolic is that headline? Not very!

One of the first articles I ever wrote here on Bloody Disgusting (just about one year ago) was a piece on Wisconsin-based artist Christopher Shy, whose unique takes on fan-favorite horror films like The Thing, Alien and The Fog totally blew my mind. And I was’t alone. The response to that piece was incredible, and I’m pretty sure many new Shy fans were created as a result of it.

As I explained last May, Shy specializes in fantasy and sci-fi artwork that is quite unlike the output of any other artist. Shy, who founded Studio Ronin in 1994, has worked for companies like Marvel, Dark Horse Comics, and Lionsgate, illustrating countless books and graphic novels, and he gained cred here in the horror community when he whipped up the concept art for Marcus Nispel’s Friday the 13th remake. It’s not hard to see why Nispel chose him to help redesign Jason Voorhees, because Shy has a knack for giving bold new life to horror favorites.

In the past year, Shy has created a handful of new pieces, so I wanted to shine the spotlight on him again today. Check out new art for everything from “Stranger Things” to RoboCop below!

Oh and head over to Art of Ronin to pick up select prints!

Relive the horror of Quint’s death and celebrate Easter at the same time!

Your parents may have told you to never play with your food, but I’m not sure that applies to Peeps. The sugary marshmallow treats, which I’d argue have become THE official candy of Easter over the years, are as much fun to play with as they are enjoyable to stuff in your mouth hole. Seriously. Have you ever microwaved one? They turn into giant blob monsters. Try it.

Peeps have in recent years also been used to create fun dioramas, which often depict movie scenes and other iconic pop culture moments. Every year, fans with too much time on their hands create new Peeps art that gets shared around social media, and this year we stumbled upon one fan who decided to go all in and give a Peeps makeover to his favorite moments from Jaws!

Enjoy the Easter treat below and check out the artist’s Flickr page to see more. He also used Peeps to recreate scenes from The Shining, The Exorcist, and Season 1 of “True Detective”!

Now this is awesome.

Stephen King has somehow remained as popular in the present day as he was when he first came onto the scene, which is a testament to just how much of a master he truly is. In fact, one could argue that King is more popular today than he ever was – with adaptations of tales like IT, The Dark Tower, and Gerald’s Game on the way, King is truly living up to his name in 2017.

And then there was last year’s “Stranger Things,” which returns for its second season this coming Halloween night. The show was described by King himself as a “greatest hits” compilation of his own work, which is a pretty fair description. In many ways, the Netflix series was a love letter to King, right down to the logo font being very clearly inspired by King’s classic book covers.

Speaking of which, artist “Butcher Billy” just drew inspiration from Stephen King book covers for a really cool art series that imagines classic love songs as King-penned horror novels!

The artist explained the fun project:

Stephen King is one of the most influential authors of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy. His dark and twisted imagination has been crucial in shaping the contemporary pop culture since the late 70’s – when his novels were first discovered by filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick and Brian De Palma – until more recently with modern TV series like Stranger Things paying homage to his brilliant influence and monumental contribution to pop culture.

This series imagines an alternate universe in which some of the most hopeless, desperate and tragic heartbreak songs of the 70’s and 80’s were actually novels written by Stephen King. The concept is to look at the dark side of love through the lenses of pop culture, bringing twisted aspects of his classic stories to play with the original meanings of the songs – that can be completely subverted or strangely emphasized, while paying tribute to the vintage design of the original book covers.

Check out the series below and see the art on faux VHS boxes over on Behance!

Easter isn’t exactly a holiday that gets associated with the horror genre very often. With the exception of last year’s Holidays, in which Nicholas McCarthy gave us one of the most horrifying Easter bunnies ever created, there aren’t a lot of Easter-themed horror movies out there (though Critters 2 just barely makes the cut). Austin-based artist Marcela Piñeda, who goes under the pseudonym “The Exorstitch” aims to fix that injustice by giving some of your favorite horror (and one non-horror) film an Easter-y twist in a gallery she calls “A Very Scary Easter“!

Donnie Darko

What would be more terrifying than waking up on Easter morning to see Frank the Bunny putting eggs in your Easter basket? Nothing. The answer is nothing.

Alien

Imagine participating in this Easter egg hunt (which Piñeda has renamed “Ovomorph Hunt”). You might get a nasty facehugger surprise!

The Silence of the Lambs

At least Piñeda’s version of Buffalo Bill has the courtesy to send a nice basket of colored eggs with his daily serving of moisturizer. Catherine Martin probably would have been a little bit happier in her pit if Jonathan Demme’s (or Thomas Harris’s) version of Bill did this.

Scanners

Admittedly, the head-exploding set piece in David Cronenberg’s Scanners would have lost some of its impact if confetti exploded out of the ConSec scanner’s head instead of brains and blood, but it would have made the film a bit more kid-friendly. And who doesn’t want a kid-friendly Cronenberg film? Fun fact: cascarón is Spanish for a hollowed out chicken egg filled with confetti or small toys.

Creepshow

How do you make George A. Romero’s Creepshow even more terrifying? Put a Peep, arguably the nastiest candy ever created, front and center on its poster.

You may hate remakes, but we can all agree that The Thing was a great one.

I’m not sure there’s a better remake on this planet than John Carpenter’s practical effects-laden The Thing, released in the summer of 1982. If you do a little number crunching, you’ll realize that this year is the film’s 35th anniversary, and the folks over at Burbank, California store Creature Features are celebrating a little bit early with a special tribute art exhibit this weekend.

The 35th anniversary group art show will have its opening reception on Saturday, April 8th from 6-9pm PDT. The show will run thru Sunday, April 16th during regular gallery hours.

In 1982, Director John Carpenter unleashed a motion picture that shocked audiences and set new standards in terror and special effects. Now, nearly 35 years later, Creature Features & Printed in Blood, Inc. proudly present an unprecedented group art show celebrating this cinematic masterpiece.

This exhibit showcases original work from over 100 artists all over the world, paying tribute to Carpenter’s chilling vision (and a few choice tributes to its original 1951 predecessor).

The exhibit also includes a major sneak peek at Printed in Blood, Inc’s upcoming THE THING Artbook showcasing over 400-pages of original tribute art.

But why wait until Saturday? We’ve just been provided with an exclusive first look at The Thing art show, so take a peek down below for a small handful of pieces that’ll be on display!

In Stephen King’s fictional topography for Maine, the town of Derry is perhaps the most iconic. Of course, that’s the town the novel It is set in, and we will be returning to the fictional town thanks to Andy Muschietti’s feature film adaptation of the King novel on September 8th. In the meantime, we’ve got something for you King fanatics that may genuinely blow your mind.

Artist “Kassiopeya” is a mega fan of King’s novel, and she’s spent a good amount of time meticulously recreating Derry in the form of a small scale miniature art piece that is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Built into an old stereo corner unit from the ’50s, the piece depicts Derry’s idyllic side up top and its nightmarish sewers, where Pennywise resides, down below.

The artist explains:

My Derry – including its underground world of the sewers – is now integrated in that furniture. The novel, with all its references to Rock ‘n’ Roll in the Fifties has merged into a whole with that furniture, and has become part of it. The surface represents the romantic sight of a Derry street bathed in the golden light of a late summer day. Only when you flip open the cabinet door do  you see what is underneath: The sewage pipes way down below… in the green glowing light of the deadlights.

Even though a visual-physical presentation that reflects the countless sides of the fictional setting is almost impossible, this work is my very personal, most authentic approach, my private memorial for this so beloved epic story that has accompanied, warmed, frightened, and comforted me for so many years.

It’s my way to say thank you to the author Stephen King for giving the world this great, great novel – and to Andy Muschietti who is actually facing the challenge of turning this icon into a wide screen movie (Andy, THANK YOU! I have been waiting 20 years for this to happen!)

Check out some images of the art piece below and see many more on Kassiopeya.

Remember the Comedy Central series “Ugly Americans”? It aired from 2010 to 2012, and was set in an alternate version of New York City inhabited by monsters. If you’ve seen it, you probably won’t be surprised to hear that the animated sitcom’s creator, Devin Clark, is a huge fan of horror movies. And he’s now using his unique style to depict his personal favorite horror flicks.

Devin’s favorites, you ask? Like the rest of us, he loves classics such as Phantasm, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Shining, The Thing, and even The Stuff, and he’s given them and others colorful and wonderfully trippy makeovers for this series of mini-posters. Horror movie art doesn’t get much more unique than this. Sure beats Photoshopped floating heads!

Check out the art below, which we grabbed from Devin’s official website.

Suddenly I’m struck with the desire to open a horror-themed bar.

We love profiling unique horror movie art here on Bloody Disgusting, and this fun series from UK-based illustrator and 3D animator Michael Whaite definitely fits that bill. Using programs like Flash and Adobe After Effects, Whaite has been turning iconic movie imagery into brightly colored, eye-popping GIFs, depicting some of the best horror movies of all time as neon bar signs.

Films like Psycho, Jaws, Beetlejuice, The Shining, and Frankenstein have been given the neon treatment by Whaite, and though he didn’t go all out and actually turn the art into signs that you can buy and display in your home, we think that just looking at these is cool enough. Speaking of cool, wait until you get down to The Shining one at the bottom, which is so goddamn perfect.

Gotta love the creativity!

As of last year, the VCR is officially dead. But one artist is bringing it back to life.

Though we may all have a nostalgic fondness for them, there’s no denying that VCRs were clunky. They were also kind of ugly. And let’s not forget that they’d often eat our tapes. But we love them all the same, don’t we? I still to this day have one right by my TV, because I sometimes do still get the desire to have an old school “VHS night.” I pop some popcorn, pour myself a drink, and slide in a tape, and if only for 90-minutes, I feel like a kid again. In that sense, VCRs are kind of like time machines, transporting us back to a simpler time in our lives. And who doesn’t want that?!

But the VCRs of your childhood, well, they damn sure looked nothing like THESE.

An artist who goes by the Instagram handle @Sorce_CodeVHS has been hand-painting bland videocassette recorders and turning them into colorful pieces of art, and many of his custom creations are themed after his favorite horror movies. These one-of-a-kind VCRs feature paintings inspired by films like Aliens, The Thing, Scanners, and Children of the Corn, and the artist covers every square inch of the devices with art in an effort to make them as cool as possible. The end result? Outdated, obsolete devices that somehow feel completely fresh and new again.

Check out some of the custom VCRs below and be sure to follow the artist on Instagram!

Some of the best artists in the world are horror fans.

It’s no secret that official movie posters aren’t quite what they used to be, but that’s okay because there are plenty of fans out there who bust their asses to give us the kind of incredible movie art we desire. Fan-made movie posters for films both new and old have become increasingly popular in recent years here on the internet, and oh boy have we seen some incredible ones in 2016.

Throughout the year, I’ve kept a folder on my desktop to collect together my favorite fan-made horror movie posters, and now that 2016 has finally come to an end, it’s time to share the best of the best. From vibrantly colorful Suspiria art that blew my mind to a poster for The Exorcist that honestly scared the shit out of me, these are the coolest fan-made horror posters I saw this year.

Below each image you’ll see the artist’s name. Run searches on Google for more awesome art!
