Samara Weaving in the world of The Evil Dead. That would be awesome, wouldn’t it? Well, it actually already happened! Before winning over the hearts of horror fans in films including Mayhem, Ready or Not, and Scream VI, Samara Weaving appeared in three episodes of the “Ash vs. Evil Dead” series, and it ended up being a formative role for the fan favorite actress.

As Samara Weaving revealed in an Ask-Me-Anything session over on Reddit last night in promotion of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the source of her iconic scream can be traced back to the Starz series “Ash vs. Evil Dead.” Weaving’s primal scream, on full display in Ready or Not and its upcoming sequel, was one the actress herself didn’t even know she was capable of.

Weaving recalls, “I remember I did week on a spin-off show called Ash vs. Evil Dead. I was in for a couple of episodes, and it was the first horror-genre thing I’d done. I remember on the day of filming, they said, ‘Alright so the house is attacking you and we’ll push in as you scream,’ and I’d never really screamed before.”

“And so I did it, and I remember thinking to myself, ‘wow that’s a good scream.’ I had never heard something like that come out of my body before,” Samara Weaving continues. “The crew even applauded, haha. It made it into the show and that was it, the scream was born.”

She adds, “Someone online called it a yoddle and that made me laugh.”

Which episodes of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” did Samara Weaving appear in?

Samara Weaving played Heather in Episodes 8-10 of the first season of “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” an ill-fated character Pablo and Kelly meet out in the forest. Heather ends up stranded at the infamous Knowby Cabin after her hiking friends are killed by a Deadite, and she’s literally tortured and brutally dispatched by the cabin itself – but not before primally screaming… a lot.

You can watch Samara Weaving’s brutal death from “Ash vs. Evil Dead” right here.

It wasn’t long after her bloody demise in “Ash vs. Evil Dead” that Samara Weaving starred in Mayhem, The Babysitter, and Ready or Not, a trio of horror films that fully cemented her status as a modern day scream queen. Weaving has since starred in horror films including Scream VI and Azrael, and she’s back on the big screen next month in the Ready or Not sequel.

When does Ready or Not 2: Here I Come release in theaters?

The horror-comedy sequel opens in theaters March 20 via Searchlight Pictures.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come picks up moments after the all-out attack from the Le Domas family. Grace (Samara Weaving) discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game — and this time with her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) at her side.

Grace has one chance to survive and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins rules it all.

One thing is for certain… Samara Weaving’s scream will be heard loud and clear!

In the wake of the Evil Dead franchise returning to theaters earlier this year with Evil Dead Rise, the horror-comedy TV series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” is coming to Hulu for Halloween.

All three seasons of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” will begin streaming on Hulu on October 1, 2023, we’ve learned, part of Hulu’s massive horror lineup for the Halloween season!

Thirty episodes of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” aired between 2015 and 2018, with the premiere directed by Sam Raimi himself. The series proved to be a massive treat for fans of the franchise, as it returned to the timeline of the original trilogy and brought Bruce Campbell back as Ash Williams. The series also introduced brand new characters to fall in love with.

In the three-season series, “Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), the chainsaw-wielding, wisecracking antihero of The Evil Dead films, is back for more gore-filled adventure.”

“Follow Ash’s journey as he returns home to Elk Grove, Michigan, meets his long-lost daughter, and unites with former enemy Ruby (Lucy Lawless) and fellow demon fighters Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) for a final blood-splattering stand to save the world!”

Unfortunately, the viewership just wasn’t high enough for Starz to renew the series for a planned fourth season. Season 4 would’ve brought Ash Williams into the post-apocalypse.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” is currently available on the STARZ app, all STARZ streaming and on-demand platforms and will continue to be available post-October 1 once it lands on Hulu.

With Evil Dead: The Game – Game of The Year Edition landing a week from now, and the fact that we’re already being teased about the upcoming “Who’s Your Daddy” DLC, leave it to Ted Raimi to mix things up a bit. He’s asking for fans to chime in on bringing Raimi’s Chet Kaminski character from “Ash vs. Evil Dead” into Evil Dead: The Game.

Raimi took to Twitter as a call to action, saying that developer Boss Team Games were deciding whether to bring Chet into the game, and asking fans to “let ’em know” if they want to see “that PF knucklehead” in Evil Dead: The Game as part of a DLC pack.

A childhood friend of Ash and bartender at the Elk Lounge Bar, Chet first appeared in the second season of “Ash vs. Evil Dead”. He unfortunately didn’t quite make it to the end of the show, so it’d be great to have him live once again in video game form. Plus, seeing as we already have another Ted Raimi character in Henrietta in the game as a Deadite, it would be nice to “even things out” on that front.

The new Evil Dead: The Game – Game of the Year Edition is set to arrive April 26 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC for the Epic Games Store and Steam.

Hot on the heels of teasing new “Ash vs. Evil Dead” content, Saber Interactive and developer Boss Team Games have announced Evil Dead: The Game – Game of the Year Edition. The new edition of the asymmetrical multiplayer game will arrive for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC for the Epic Games Store and Steam on April 26.

The Game of the Year Edition (which can be purchased by itself, or with a paid upgrade) will include the base game, alongside six DLC packs. That also includes the new “Who’s Your Daddy” pack, which features Lee Majors‘ Brock Williams from “Ash vs. Evil Dead” as a new Survivor, alongside a new Demon in The Schemer.

Brock brings with him immunity to knockbacks, as well as several auras he can unleash to help his squadmates. These auras change dynamically based on how many Williams family members are on the team. Meanwhile, based on the notorious demon boss Baal, the Schemer is a trap specialist who confuses Survivors with illusions. His Meat Puppets inflict increased damage with a variety of attacks based on the fear levels of the Survivors. The “Who’s Your Daddy” pack will also include new outfits for Ash, Amanda, and Pablo.

The “Who’s Your Daddy” DLC will also be available as a standalone purchase. It’s not clear which of the other DLCs are included with Evil Dead: The Game – Game of the Year Edition, though the press release states that they feature “a range of bonus playable Survivors and Demons with unique powers and abilities, as well as tons of cosmetics to customize your experience.”

There’s also still no word on the Nintendo Switch version of Evil Dead: The Game, which had been announced to be arriving at a later date.

HBO has secured another ratings hit with their new video game adaptation “The Last of Us,” and while it’s as exciting and epic as the original video game, it also has the distinction of having a Latino leading man. Chilean actor Pedro Pascal plays the protagonist Joel, who is tasked with trekking across the horrific landscape to help find a cure with young Ellie in tow.

With a Latino actor leading such a massive hit for the horror genre, it got us thinking about other great Latino Horror Heroes from pop culture. Here are five of our favorites.

Pablo Simon Bolivar – Ash vs. Evil Dead

latino horror ray santiago

Pablo (Ray Santiago) is an Ash fan boy when we first meet him, referring to him as “El Jefe” with admiration. When he’s pulled into the war against the Deadites, the seemingly non-threatening blue collar worker becomes a vicious foe against evil, even building Ash a new prosthetic hand that comes equipped with various tools. Channeling his background in Brujeria, he becomes one with the Necronomicon and acquires some of his own powers to help Ash in combat. Despite some tumbles (and death), he fights with Ash until the very end, and proves very useful. Thankfully, Pablo (and cohort Kelly) has been somewhat canonized in the “Evil Dead” expanded universe – both characters, for example, are featured as playable survivors in Evil Dead: The Game.

Princess (Juanita Lopez) – The Walking Dead Comics

latino horror heroes

“What a cruddy term when it gets down to it, right? Ever think about that? There were less of us, so they called us ‘minorities’. It just sounds so negative, like the word was designed to make everyone dismiss us immediately.” Originally introduced in issue 171 of “The Walking Dead,” Princess is an eccentric and seemingly unhinged survivor who builds herself a small environment to soothe her isolation and loneliness, even propping zombies up for her amusement. With a large personality and somewhat childlike temperament, along the way Princess gains the trust of Eugene and proves herself among Rick’s group (and Alexandria). She ultimately survives to see the end, as one of the most formidable foes of the walking dead; as well as one of the more colorful heroes of Robert Kirkman’s series. Princess was played by Paola Lázaro in the AMC series.

El Santo – Santo Movie Series

latino horror el santo

I spent a lot of my childhood watching my family consistently tune in to the El Santo movies on Spanish television. They’ve managed to become massive cult classics and widely appreciated over the years. El Santo, whose name is Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, is a classic Latin folk hero whose luchador status has given him the abilities to fight a plethora of horror villains and a variety of monsters. In his massive fifty four movie series, El Santo has fought many monsters in movies like “Santo vs. The Zombies,” “Santo vs. The Vampire Women,” “Santo in the Treasure of Dracula” (infamously satirized in MST3K), and “Santo vs. The She Wolves,” to name just a few.

Sam Carpenter – Scream, Scream VI

Scream 6 New York City

In the vein of her predecessor Sidney Prescott, Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) is the new “final girl” heroine of the Scream franchise. While she’s basically fighting to protect her sister Tara, she manages to muster up many clever plans and sneaky attacks on Ghostface. This is especially true when she saves her sister in the hospital alongside Dewey, as well as her attack on Amber and Richie during the climax. Sam has been passed the torch by Sidney to carry on the legacy of Scream heroines, and what makes her even more of a razor edged horror heroine than Sidney is that she’s the daughter of Billy Loomis, a bonafide psycho whose own legacy she’s always at risk of following. Just how long before Ghostface pushes her over the edge, is the question…

El Wray – Grindhouse Presents: Planet Terror

What we know about El Wray (Freddy Rodriguez) is shrouded in mystery, but we do learn over the course of Planet Terror that he was a military special agent who served in an unspecified place, where he learned the deadly art of killing. When we meet him, he’s a wandering stranger who arrives in Texas, and gets caught in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. He’s basically the hero of Robert Rodriguez’s zombie splatter film, driven by the love of Cherry Darling, and he goes through literal hell to save her when she’s stuck in a zombie ridden hospital. He also manages to lead the trek to salvation for his comrades in the climax, sacrificing himself for the rest of the human race.

Along with Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun, El Wray had massive spinoff potential for a big action movie series in the wake of Grindhouse, but alas, he only got the one movie.

Antagonist Ruby Knowby was played by Lucy Lawless across all seasons of the Starz series “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” one of the Dark Ones and author of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis.

Ruby will be a playable survivor in the game. The team previews, “A former Dark One herself, she is a natural leader who can still use her evil abilities to consume the souls of her enemies to receive unique perks.”

The “Ash vs. Evil Dead” DLC update will be available on February 2, 2023!

Boss Team Games and Saber Interactive’s Evil Dead: The Game features single-player and co-op gameplay, promising to be the ultimate Evil Dead experience in the world of video games. Several characters from the movies and TV series are playable in the game at launch, along with four different versions of Deadite-slaying horror hero Ash Williams.

In the game, “Work together as a team of four survivors, exploring, looting, crafting, managing your fear, and finding key artifacts to seal the breach between worlds. Or take control of the powerful Kandarian Demon to hunt Ash and his friends while possessing Deadites, the environment, and even the survivors themselves as you seek to swallow their souls.”

Groovy! For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Ash vs. Evil Dead“, the three-season television series that aired on the Starz Network from 2015 through 2018.

One of the most sobering moments of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” came in the original introduction by franchise star Bruce Campbell, who explained that the series was made because fans wouldn’t shut up. Indeed, fans had been asking for years for another adventure with Ashley Williams after Army of Darkness, and the team finally obliged in 2015. The climate was right for the return of the Evil Dead at the time as studios and television networks were investing in horror series. Developed by Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, and Tom Spezialy, Starz’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead” wasn’t just a dry run for fans. The series was a return to form for the Evil Dead series, one that never betrayed its source material despite being broadened for more general audiences.

Right down to the vicious gore and dark comedy, the Raimis and Bruce Campbell gave us what we wanted all along in a brisk episodic format with the short-lived “Ash vs. Evil Dead.”

Its just too bad ratings weren’t strong enough to garner more than three seasons.

Ash Vs Evil Dead

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” is set somewhat after the events of Army of Darkness (even though it’s never explicitly stated for the audience). Ashley Williams, after all of his demon slaying, is still just a regular Joe Schmoe working a nine-to-five job at the “Value Stop” as a simple stock boy, alongside his friend and fan boy Pablo (Ray Santiago) and the object of Pablo’s affections, Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo).

Ash has seemingly done very little with his life since returning from 1300 AD at the end of Army of Darkness, and at the beginning of the series we see him living in a trailer and drinking alone in bars. As usual, Ash is more interested in picking up women. In an effort to impress his latest fling he introduces her to the Necronomicon and wouldn’t you know it? He accidentally unleashes “The Draft,” the demonic entity that soon begins possessing locals and turning them into Deadites. Left with no other choice but to clean up his mess, Ash must renounce his routine existence and become a hero once more by taking up arms and facing the demonic scum.

When they accidentally view firsthand what’s risen from hell, co-workers Pablo and Kelly decide to join Ash on his quest to save humanity.

What’s so excellent about “Ash vs. Evil Dead” is that it’s a return to form for the franchise that also expands on the mythos of the Deadites and the Necronomicon. The series doesn’t just repeat the same beats we saw in the first three films, this time offering up varieties in settings where the chaos ensues. The writers also introduce us to variations of the Deadites, all of whom vary in shape and size, but are absolutely horrifying (and ugly) to battle. There’s even a hilarious puppet version of Ash Williams introduced to us, named “Ashy Slashy, who we get to know all too well.

Bruce Campbell is as charismatic and hilarious as ever, playing the cocky anti-hero who is ill-prepared this time to battle the Deadites. The writers introduce two new heroes to the fold with the charming Pablo and Kelly, two budding badasses that vary wildly in personality and bring their own skills to the war. Ironically while they are there to play off of Ash and balance out his penchant for irresponsibility, they also are eventually developed to where they become horror heroes as well. Dana DeLorenzo and Ray Santiago are fantastic in their respective roles, playing two Deadite fighters that have come into their own by the time the series comes to a close.

Eventually the series evolves from Ash’s journey to a group effort yet it keeps a lot of the spirit that made the original Evil Dead movies so much fun. The franchise’s trademark dark comedy and vicious violence is maintained while the writers pay big tribute to the original movies. Time and time again we revisit The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, with Ash and his crew even returning to the original cabin. Additionally, Ellen Sandweiss from the original Evil Dead returns as Ash’s ill-fated little sister Cheryl. We also get a firsthand glimpse at the dreaded “Draft,” which was always an unseen entity of doom in the films. The writers also delve into other facets like the mythical Kandarian Dagger, other Deadite hunters, and even Deadite offspring.

More exciting though is we get a glimpse into Ash’s unusual family as we’re introduced to his father Brock Williams (Lee Majors) in season two, and yes, his long lost daughter Brandy Barr, in season three. Season three is where the series really comes into its own as Ash is introduced to Brandy, as played by Arielle Carver-O’Neill. Barr is introduced as the unlikeliest of Ash Williams’ children living a normal life with her mom. But eventually the Deadites come knocking at her door, forcing Ash, Pablo, and Kelly to track her down and save her. She inevitably has no choice but to join in the fight with her father, even experiencing her own confrontations with the Deadites (in the excellent penultimate episode “Judgement Day”) in the process.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” is loaded with so many surprises and entertaining twists, and lends a wider scope to Ash’s world that makes the series feel more like a line up of great Evil Dead shorts than an episodic premium cable TV show. Sadly, the fans didn’t really turn out for the series, and Starz decided to cancel “Ash vs. Evil Dead” after three seasons. They closed the show on a huge cliffhanger as Ash awakens to an apparent Deadite apocalypse and goes back into the fray alongside Brandy. It’s a shame the show couldn’t have gone even farther out beyond what we knew about the Deadites, as I think we could have seen some new wild variations.

There’s no real explanation for why viewers didn’t turn out for the series, especially after the huge demand all those years for Ash’s return. Despite a circulating petition, Bruce Campbell accepted the fate, explaining: “Ash vs. Evil Dead has been the ride of a lifetime. Ash Williams was the role of a lifetime. It was an honor to reunite with Evil Dead partners Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi to give our tireless fans another taste of the outrageous horror/comedy they demanded. I will always be grateful to Starz for the opportunity to revisit the franchise that launched our careers.”

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” was Campbell’s retirement from playing the character in the live action format, but the series was a great last hurrah for fans and horror buffs alike. We got three wildly different but utterly entertaining seasons that expanded The Evil Dead while also paying great respect to the groundwork Sam Raimi set. After the show ended, the series remained a favorite with fans and the universe has been thankfully kept alive with video games, comics, the much lauded 2013 remake, and the highly anticipated Evil Dead Rise. I think it’s safe to say we’re in good hands, and are going to be visiting the world of the Deadites again and again for a long time to come.

Is It On DVD/Blu-ray/Streaming? You can buy individual seasons or the complete series on Blu-ray for a great price, and you can stream the series on Starz, Netflix, Youtube, and Hulu. The Evil Dead movies are always readily available on streaming or on Blu-ray and DVD.

Horror and science fiction have always been a part of the television canvas, and constant attempts have been made over the years to produce classic entertainment. Some have fallen by the wayside, while others became mainstream phenomena. With “TV Terrors,” we take a look back at the many genre efforts from the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s, exploring some shows that became cult classics, and others that sank into obscurity.

The series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” has plenty of representation in Evil Dead: The Game, and we’ve learned that the next DLC pack will bring even more “Ash vs Evil Dead” love into the mix.

The team tweets today, “The Book of the Dead never lets anyone off easy. Ash vs Evil Dead DLC arrives early next year! What are you most hoping to see?”

Along with the tweet, they’ve also showed off a sneak-peek at a new Pablo (Ray Santiago) skin that’ll be included with the DLC update, and you can check that out below.

Over the last year, the Halloweenies have been running around the woods, carving through deadites and Kandarian demons as they deliver three hour episodes on The Evil Dead franchise. Now, after a brief respite that saw them return to Haddonfield for Halloween Ends, the gang is back in the shack, so to speak, to close the proverbial book … at least for now.

It’s time to rank the franchise.

Together, the five co-hosts gather their thoughts on Sam Raimi‘s original Ash trilogy, Fede Alvarez‘s 2013 reimagining, and all three seasons of the Starz series. Fortunately for all of us, the sun will be up in an hour or so, and we can all get out of here together. You, me… We’ll all be going home together. Wouldn’t you like to be going home? I bet you’d like that, wouldn’t you?

Stream the ranking below or subscribe via iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, RadioPublic, Acast, Google Podcasts, and RSS. New to the Halloweenies? Catch up with the gang by revisiting their essential episodes on past franchises such as Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and Scream. Soon they’ll announce Season 6.

You can also become a member of their Patreon, The Rewind, for hilariously irreverent commentaries (e.g. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Gremlins, Child’s Play) and one-off deep dives on your favorite rentals (e.g. Saw, 28 Days Later, Manhunter, Near Dark). It has now been four years since the cancellation of Starz series “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” which brought Bruce Campbell back as Ash Williams to continue storylines from Sam Raimi’s original trilogy. The series delivered three seasons of bloody fun before getting the axe, and the characters more recently made their return in Saber Interactive’s Evil Dead: The Game.

Campbell has made it clear over the years that he’s retired from playing Ash Williams again in live action, but that doesn’t mean he’s never going to be *voicing* the character again. In fact, Campbell indeed does provide the voice of Ash for the aforementioned Evil Dead: The Game, and it sounds like an animated “Ash vs. Evil Dead” continuation isn’t off the table.

Chatting with Campbell during San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, Collider asked the horror icon if there have been any talks of continuing the series. Here’s what he had to say….

“Yeah… as an animated series. You pick up right where the show left off. You can do the future a lot easier in animation. I still sound like Ash, and you know, my voice hasn’t been as beat up as my body has been so I can still do that crap. So I’ll still do the video game. And we’re already talking about an animated [series].”

The series finale of the Starz series brought Ash Williams into a post apocalyptic future, which is presumably where “Ash vs Evil Dead” Season 4 would’ve began. Could we someday down the road see Season 4 come to life as an animated spinoff project? Never say never!

Up next from the Evil Dead franchise is brand new feature film Evil Dead Rise, which will take the franchise beyond the cabin in the woods and beyond the Ash Williams character.

Evil Dead Rise is set to debut on HBO Max sometime later this year.

Below, you can hear our own Halloweenies saw through all three seasons of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” in their new three-hour deep dive that was released — coincidentally enough — today.

In October 2015, two decades after Army of Darkness and only two short years after the franchise had been seemingly rebooted, Ashley Williams (Bruce Campell) returned to the saw with Starz’ Ash vs. Evil Dead. To everyone’s surprise — deadites, included — the genre-defying series managed to last not one, not two, but three whole seasons.

It was one hell of a groovy ride, too: There was ’70s rock for days, familiar faces returned (including one iconic sister), the gore was gross, the humor relentless, great times. But, more importantly, the series completely expanded the universe, introducing fan favorite heroes in Dana DeLorenzo‘s Kelly Maxwell and Ray Santiago‘s Pablo Bolivar.

After being dragged to Hell, the Halloweenies are back on track and returning to the woods to saw through all three seasons of the underrated series. Together, they discuss the evolution (or often de-evolution) of Ash Williams, the pros and cons of streaming vs. weekly watches, the showrunner shakeups, and, you guessed it, 2005’s Kojak.

After being dragged across hell in June, the Halloweenies are back in the woods this month to saw through all three seasons of Starz’s Ash Vs. Evil Dead. Before they reunite with Ash Williams and his Ghost Beaters, however, they’ve decided to reflect on similar horror TV shows of yesteryear, while also meditating on IP that still deserves the TV treatment.

So, that’s what they did. Halloweenies co-hosts Michael Roffman, McKenzie Gerber, and Justin Gerber pulled out their producers chairs and got to work. Ahead, you’ll hear them workshop 10 different horror franchises into the television medium. What’s more, they even list where the show should air and whether it should be a limited or continuing series.

Saber Interactive’s Evil Dead: The Game unites many characters from the Evil Dead universe, specifically the first three movies and the “Ash vs. Evil Dead” TV series. The game focuses on the franchise survivors as they gather loot from caches scattered on the game map and complete objectives before taking on the Deadites.

Evil Dead: The Game categorizes its survivors in four distinct classes of combat, taking their personalities and strengths into consideration in their attributes and special abilities. The game offers nine playable characters from the universe, spread among Leaders, Warriors, Hunters, and Support from the outset.

Then there’s the tricky and oft frustrating solo missions, four of which unlock more characters from the Evil Dead universe. If you’ve completed all five solo missions, you’ll notice a remaining Survivor slot available for Leaders, Warriors, and Support. It naturally elicited the question as to which Evil Dead franchise players could fill those slots in future DLC updates.

While we’re already pumped to battle Deadites at Castle Kandar in the future, here are six Evil Dead franchise characters we’d love to play as in the video game down the road.

Note: We’re curating our wishlist based on the IP currently offered within the game, which includes The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, and the “Ash vs. Evil Dead” series.

Jake – Evil Dead II

Evil Dead The Game characters jake

Played by the late Danny Hicks, the owner of Jake’s Gas ‘n Go (a location seen in the game!) from Evil Dead II would fit right into the video game realm. Jake never hesitates when it comes to taking action. He guides Annie Knowby straight to the Knowby cabin and immediately incapacitates an understandably trigger-happy Ash. Jake’s all muscle, no strategy, with decent survivor instincts. While he may not have survived his encounter with the Deadites, he was far from the first to perish. Jake would be right at home alongside fellow Warriors.

Sheila – Army of Darkness

Fellow Army of Darkness characters Lord Arthur and Henry the Red already exist within the game, and their medieval stomping grounds will soon offer players a new map to explore. So, Ash’s love interest seems like a prime candidate to appear as a playable candidate. While not much of a fighter and prone to possession, Sheila does demonstrate a supportive nature that would make her a perfect addition to the Support class.

Blacksmith – Army of Darkness

Castle Kandar’s resident Blacksmith created the weapons and armor used by Lord Arthur and his knights. If you’ve unlocked Arthur in Mission 5 or at least played far enough to retrieve his legendary sword, you’d know what a valuable weapon this is during combat. Blacksmith is as tough as his weaponry and first to volunteer to aid Ash in the fight against the enemy. That opens up exciting possibilities in-game.

Brandy Barr Williams – “Ash vs. Evil Dead”

Like father, like daughter. Brandy gets introduced in the third season of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” as a high school student utterly oblivious to the world of demons. Nor is she aware of Ash Williams, her father. Despite her initial fear, skepticism, and outright denial, Brandy adjusts rather quickly, becoming an asset to the team. Brandy also exhibits many of Ash’s traits, including a demonic hand injury. While “Ash vs. Evil Dead” didn’t make it past season three, Brandy’s journey seemed headed toward leadership, giving her Leader potential.

Brock Williams – “Ash vs Evil Dead”

Evil Dead The Game characters brock williams

Ash’s far more unfiltered and obnoxious dad makes it abundantly clear where Ash gets his personality. While abrasive and crass, Brock loves his children fiercely; he still mourns over his daughter Cheryl and harbors a mean grudge against Ash for abandoning him decades ago. That he’s very fond of guns means he could make for a good Hunter, though the class is already heavily stacked. Evil Dead: The Game rewards teams who fill their roster with all iterations of Ash with a “Four Horseman” trophy. If your group plays as characters chosen by specific movies – all Army of Darkness players, for example – you get trophies for that as well. Maybe a Williams family trophy is in order?

Ruby – “Ash vs Evil Dead”

Evil Dead The Game characters ruby

The series’ on and off again central antagonist had quite the arc over the three seasons. First introduced as “Ruby Knowby,” the Dark One and Necronomicon author acted as Annie Knowby’s sister to manipulate Amanda Fisher into helping her track down Ash Williams. When Ruby’s demonic spawn turns against her in season two, she becomes an unwitting anti-hero and valuable ally to Ash’s team. Alternate timeline versions of Ruby ultimate replaced Good Ruby with a 1982 version that’d never met Ash, therefore still evil. Ruby’s power and her potential to shift back and forth between teams make her one of the most exciting options to add to the game. Ruby could exist as a Demon or a Survivor, giving multiple character iterations to test out in combat.

The idea of synthesizing all of the moving pieces of the Evil Dead series into one cohesive package is one vicious, behemoth Deadite in itself. But on top of that, transcending the medium of film and television and adapting it into a gaming genre as volatile as asymmetrical multiplayer? One would naturally question how Saber Interactive could possibly appease every possible audience with EVIL DEAD: THE GAME, from veteran film fans to savvy gamers who want a unique and engaging experience. But as someone who fits into both camps who recently spent an hour with the developers kicking Deadite ass (and kicking ass as Deadites), I can happily report that Saber Interactive has pulled it off. EVIL DEAD: THE GAME is asymmetrical multiplayer at its best.

For those unfamiliar, asymmetrical multiplayer is a gameplay paradigm that heavily skews the power dynamic between two opposing teams. In the case of EVIL DEAD: THE GAME, four players select a character from the roster of Ash Williams and his cohorts from across the Evil Dead franchise (the “Survivor” team) to face one player who controls the all-powerful Kandarian Demon (the “Killer” team).

evil dead the game preview

The survivor team is packed with familiar faces, including multiple iterations of Ash Williams as he appears throughout the Evil Dead series, meaning if you want to play Avengers multiverse style as a team of four different Ashes, the choice is yours. Just expect to hear a lot of quips from Bruce Campbell, who returned to reprise his role along with almost all of the original cast members from the films and television series. If you’re feeling a bit more sadistic, you can opt to play as The Kandarian Demon, which gives you the ability to control and summon Deadites to hinder and destroy the survivor team before they have a chance to use the Necronomicon to open a portal and excise the evil.

One important question I had when going into the preview was “How is this game going to stand out from its peers in the asymmetrical multiplayer space?” The genre is already well-known for hits like Behaviour Interactive’s Dead By Daylight, and is becoming further saturated with upcoming titles like Gun Media’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre game. Walking out of the preview, I felt that Saber Interactive knocked it out of the park in multiple ways, but my biggest takeaway was the sense of agency that the gameplay provides on both the survivor and killer sides.

For starters, on the survivor side, you’re given the option to select a character that fits into one of four categories: Leader, Warrior, Hunter, or Support. Each character in their respective class holds certain abilities that fit their archetype–for example, Cheryl in Support has an ability that heals the team as they converge around her. This system immediately establishes an element of complexity to the gameplay: how do you build synergy based on these classes? Do you want to be in the fray battling it out, or would you rather scout out objectives and rally the team to success? Additionally, you have the option of upgrading your abilities via cans of Pink-F scattered throughout the map, and have access to an expansive list of weapons to choose from shotguns to Medieval swords.

On the other hand, as the Kandarian Demon, you’re given free rein to zip across the map and collect Infernal Energy, which is used for all sorts of offensive options from summoning Deadites, to conjuring up traps, and my favorite, possession. Think of it like the survivors are in one big haunted house, and you’re the one with the master switch that controls everything that happens, from jump-scare traps to possessed trees and cars. Survivors themselves can even become possessed once their fear meters max out, giving you the option to take control of their characters to lay the smackdown on their team members, waste all of their ammo or separate them from the group. It’s as chaotic as it is a genuinely unique and a fresh take on the genre that’s never been seen before.

evil dead the game demon

These factors of complexity and agency are so important because it counteracts an issue that often presents itself in asymmetrical horror: redundancy. Continuously playing matches can grow stagnant quickly if the gameplay isn’t complex and the same objectives need to be completed over and over again. The one hour I played of EVIL DEAD: THE GAME left me hungry to explore more. How does the gameplay differ between survivors? What are the other weapons like? How can I best optimize my team? And more importantly, I was excited to try out playing as the killer again. Like many other folks who play asymmetrical multiplayer, I tend to favor playing as the survivor over the killer, but playing as the Kandarian Demon was such a blast that I could see myself defecting to the dark side with EVIL DEAD.

EVIL DEAD: THE GAME truly offers something for everyone. Those who have stuck with the franchise since Sam Raimi’s first film in 1981 will love the homages and faithful adaptations, and those new to the series will love the blend of action, horror, and humor. People familiar with asymmetrical multiplayer can expect a fresh and innovative take on the genre, and if you’re new to asymmetrical multiplayer? I can confidently say EVIL DEAD: THE GAME will set the bar high for you.

EVIL DEAD: THE GAME will release on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Series X/S, and PC via the Epic Games Store on May 13th, 2022.

If you’re looking to break up your horror movie marathons or simply need a break, there’s no shortage of great binge-worthy genre series at your disposal right now. To make it easier to navigate the hours upon hours of horror across multiple platforms currently available, we’ve whipped up a handy guide for you. It’s only scratching the surface of what’s available, too.

From retro series worth revisiting, to brand-new episodes to discover and dig into for the first time, these binge-worthy shows make for a fantastic start to endless TV watching.

Hulu

“The Exorcist”

The Exorcist TV

This show deserved a lot more love and attention during its run on Fox. Created by Jeremy Slater, season one kicks off with Angela Rance (Geena Davis) enlisting the help of two priests when she suspects a demonic entity is targeting her family. It’s only the beginning of a twisty and harrowing nightmare conspiracy. Season two offers a whole new family and scenario coping with demonic possession. Seriously, this show is great.

“Preacher”

Based on Garth Ennis’s comic book, this series follows Jesse Custer, a preacher in a small town trying to evade his previous life of crime. Supernatural events change everything, causing him to enlist his ex Tulip and Irish vampire Cassidy in his quest for answers.

“American Horror Story”

Though this anthology horror story by Ryan Murphy is also available on Netflix and Prime Video, Hulu has the advantage of being the only one to offer the most recent season; “1984”.

“The Terror”

A supernatural horror anthology series, with each season drawing inspiration from historical events. Season one was based on Dan Simmons’ novel of the same name, a fictional account of Captain Sir James Franklin’s lost expedition to locate the Northwest Passage. Season two centered around a Japanese American community haunted by bakemono during World War II.

“NOS4A2”

Based on Joe Hill’s epic novel, immortal vampire Charlie Manx feeds off children, transforming them into monstrous shells in his nightmarish Christmasland. Only a New England teen with a unique gift can stand in his way.

“Castle Rock”

Taking place in Stephen King’s fictional town of Castle Rock, characters, themes, and plot beats from King’s novels are re-purposed to create completely new stories in “Castle Rock.” Two seasons are currently available, with season two centered on Misery‘s Annie Wilkes.

“The Purge”

Once a year, any and all crime – including murder – is legal in America for a period of 12 hours. A spinoff TV series from the popular film franchise.

“Stan Against Evil”

John C. McGinley stars as a retired sheriff who joins forces with the new sheriff to fend off demons plaguing their town. Think wacky horror comedy in the vein of Ash vs. Evil Dead, but from creator Dana Gould.

“Twin Peaks”

Mark Frost and David Lynch’s beloved series follows quirky FBI Agent Dale Cooper in his quest to solve the murder of a young woman in the bizarre town of Twin Peaks.

“Salem”

Salem

A fictional retelling of the Salem witch trials, heavy on the horror. Witches, plagues, gruesome rituals, murder, and more as witch Mary Sibley vies for control in her quest to summon Satan.

“Inside No. 9”

Inside No 9

An anthology series by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith that varies in genre, from horror to drama, but always employs dark humor. When it’s scary, it’s scary. A very original and creative show for genre fans.

Netflix

“The Haunting of Hill House”

Mike Flanagan’s modern reworking of Shirley Jackson’s classic novel brought the heart and horror in equal measure. It’s also the perfect series to revisit again and again- there’s no way you’re going to catch all of the hidden ghosts upon first watch, after all. Plus, a rewatch now seems ideal with The Haunting of Bly Manor on the way.

“Marianne”

When famous horror author Emma is on the verge of ending her most popular novel series, the entity haunting her pages bleeds over into her waking life. A bizarre encounter with a childhood friend prompts her to return home to confront her past. If you’re in the mood for masterful scares, this is it.

“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa brings his comic to life for Netflix, which sees the teen witch trying to navigate both the mortal world and the world of witches. Things get downright Satanic.

“I Am Not Okay with This”

Like most teens, Sydney is struggling with her family life and budding feelings for her best friend. Unlike most teens, she’s also struggling with a new mystery power that leads to catastrophe when she gets too upset. Things get funny, then bloody.

“You”

Joe is a charming bookstore manager in New York City who’s obsessed with the idea of being in love. So much so that he’ll go to devastating lengths to win over the latest object of his desire. Including murder. Lots of creepy, unnerving murder.

“Santa Clarita Diet”

This delightful and gory comedy was canceled far too soon. At least there’s still three wonderful seasons to revisit. Sheila and Joel are married real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. When Sheila dies, their lives take a dark turn. Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant are delightful in their roles, and the blood flows freely.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead”

Ash reluctantly picks up the chainsaw once more to save the world from a Deadite plague. Never mind that he actually started it. This time he has help in the form of the Ghost Beaters, and the Evil Dead universe gets expanded like never before.

“Kingdom”

In this period thriller, a Korean prince is sent out on a mission to investigate an outbreak that threatens his kingdom. That outbreak, of course, is zombies. Season two just dropped.

“Mindhunter”

For the true crime junkies. Set in the late 1970s, two FBI agents are tasked with interviewing serial killers to solve open cases.

“Stranger Things”

Sci-fi horror meets ‘80s nostalgia in this mega-popular series. When a young boy disappears, his mother, a police chief and his friends must confront terrifying supernatural forces in order to get him back.

“Penny Dreadful”

An original series set in Victorian London that weaves together characters from popular classic and Gothic fiction, like Dorian Grey, Victor Frankenstein, and Dracula. Well cast and brilliantly executed, Eva Green stole the show in this series. And it’s perfect to revisit ahead of the upcoming spinoff, “City of Angels.”

“Supernatural”

Two brothers follow their father’s footsteps as hunters, road tripping across the country to fight evil supernatural beings of all varieties. Now in its final season, now’s a perfect time to get caught up.

“Ghoul”

In a totalitarian near-future India, a mysterious prisoner is sent to a remote military interrogation center where he turns the tables on his captors by exposing their most shameful secrets and unleashing a demon from Arabic folklore. If you’re looking for a series that requires little to no commitment, Ghoul is only three episodes long.

“From Dusk Till Dawn”

Created by Robert Rodriguez, this series expands upon the events of the original film, beginning with the Gecko brothers’ bank heist that leads to their fateful encounter with the supernatural at the vampire-inhabited strip club in Mexico.

“Locke & Key”

After their father is murdered, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father’s death. Based on the popular comic series, this Netflix show is gearing up for a second season.

Prime Video

“Hannibal”

Before the events of Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, Hannibal Lecter was a renowned psychiatrist in the employ of the FBI. This prequel series by Bryan Fuller explores Lecter’s relationship with young FBI criminal profiler Will Graham, who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers. Grisly and clever, it’s a must-see horror show.

“The Boys”

Based on Garth Ennis’s comic book series, “The Boys” shows the darker side of superheroes. Much, much darker. To the public, superhero team “The Seven” are godlike celebrities. Behind the scenes, though, they’re narcissists that abuse their power. The Boys are the vigilantes that aim to keep them in check. Gore and violence ensue.

“Dark Shadows: The Revival”

Created by Dan Curtis, this 1991 Gothic soap opera streamlined the original story. Victoria Winters comes to Collinwood to work as a governess, but soon finds herself drawn into a strange world of vampires, ghosts and curses. Ben Cross assumes the role of vampire Barnabas Collins and Joanna Going plays Victoria Winters. Look for a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt as one of the Collins children.

“Grimm”

All six seasons are available to binge. Inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales, detective Nick Burkhardt discovers he’s a descendant of “Grimm” hunters charged with preserving the balance between humans and supernatural creatures of the world.

“Hammer House of Horror”

Hammer Horror’s anthology series told tales of haunted houses, demons, ghosts, and other supernatural wonders. There are a lot of great gems in this 13-episode run, including “The House That Bled to Death.”

Shudder

“The Dead Lands”

In ancient Maori times, an undead warrior and a young tribeswoman team up to find a way to stop the evil dead from rising. A unique genre series by Glenn Standring, based on his 2014 movie of the same name.

“Creepshow”

The Creep is back once more, this time in anthology series form for Shudder. Showrunner Greg Nicotero assembles a Murderers’ Row of horror talent, and an insane amount of Easter eggs for the Creepshow fan.

“Cursed Films”

Jay Cheel’s five-part documentary series examines the myths and legends behind some of Hollywood’s notoriously cursed horror film productions. The Exorcist is available now. Look for the next two episodes to drop on April 9.

“Channel Zero”

Nick Antosca’s anthology series centered each season on a specific Creepypasta. It was canceled far too soon, but at least we can binge Candle Cove, The No-End House, Butcher’s Block, and The Dream Door on Shudder now.

“The Core”

Mickey Keating hosts this horror talk show that examines and dissects the horror genre, from techniques and tropes to psychology. Look for breakdowns of special effects and insights from guests.

“Wolf Creek”

Greg McLean continues the murderous exploits of Mick Taylor in series form. In season one, American teenager Eve barely escapes from Taylor when he slaughters her family. Left for dead, Eve sets off on a quest for revenge. Season two, which arrives on April 30th, revolves around a new set of characters for Taylor to torture.

Tubi

“Dark Shadows”

For the ambitious overachiever, all 1,245 episodes of Dan Curtis’s original Gothic soap opera are available for your viewing pleasure. You can even break it down in chunks according to your favorite storylines. Vampire Barnabas Collins, for example, doesn’t even enter the series until episode 211.

“Masters of Horror”

Creator Mick Garris assembled the foremost names in the horror film genre, including John Carpenter, Dario Argento and Takashi Miike, to unleash hour-long horror films for “Masters of Horror.” Both seasons are available, including the infamously banned episode “Imprint.”

Fans of the Evil Dead franchise may soon have reason to rejoice! Fourteen months after the cancellation of the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead, Sam Raimi – who directed the original trilogy and produced the show – says early work has begun on a brand new movie.

In a new interview with Bloody-Disgusting, about the killer alligator movie Crawl (which Raimi produced), we asked the filmmaker what the future of the Evil Dead franchise was.

“I’d love to make another one. I don’t think TV is in its future but we’re talking about – Bruce [Campbell], Rob [Tapert] and myself – one or two different ways to go for the next movie,” Sam Raimi confirmed. He added:

We’d like to make another Evil Dead feature and in fact we’re working on some ideas right now.”

The big question is whether the movie would follow the events of the Ash storyline, and once again star Bruce Campbell, or continue the storyline of the remake? Or would it be something entirely new? It turns out Raimi and company have one idea if Bruce Campbell comes back, one idea if Campbell opts out but Fede Álvarez – who directed the remake – is able to return, and another idea if both of those possibilities fall through!

Jane Levy Evil Dead

I would be thrilled if Bruce Campbell changed his mind about retirement, would come back for the original Evil Dead line,” Raimi said. “But if not, I’m very happy to work with, if Fede [Álvarez] would come back and make the sequel… but he’s such a big shot now. He’s so successful, an artist in demand, that I don’t think he’d want to do that.”

Speaking of Álvarez’s remake, we asked Raimi – once and for all – whether the events of that gory horror hit were canonical with the rest of the franchise.

“I think that’s a part of the Evil Dead universe but not part of the Bruce Campbell storyline,” Raimi explained.

When Bloody-Disgusting asked for clarification that the events of the “remake” were happening off in a corner of the original universe, Raimi replied: “Exactly.”

“But there’s also a third possibility we’re talking about,” Raimi added. The filmmaker did not elaborate further on what the third direction for the Evil Dead movie franchise could be, but he did leave us with a timeline.

“So I think you may see some action on the Evil Dead movie in the next six months,” Raimi concluded.

Good news for Deadites, and until the next update comes at least we have Crawl to tide us over! It swims into theaters this Friday!

In the world of live action, Bruce Campbell has assured that he’ll never be playing Ash Williams again, but that doesn’t mean the Evil Dead franchise dies without him. In a new chat with Inquisitr, Campbell touches upon the future of Evil Dead while promoting his next gig as host of “Ripley’s Believe It or Not,” teasing that we haven’t seen the last of the franchise.

[Fans are] going to see different versions, they’re going to be seeing more Evil Dead, too,” Campbell told the site. “We’re not done with the Evil Dead saga. More stories to tell.

Campbell was then asked if Fede Alvarez would be returning to the franchise to possibly direct a sequel to his remake, to which Campbell replied:

Fede’s a big Hollywood director now. I don’t know if Fede needs this. We’ll have to see.”

One other thing Campbell again reiterated in the interview is that he may be done playing Ash *physically*, but that doesn’t mean he’s not up for reprising the role for audio projects.

I’m still doing video games… I’m doing voices for Ash,” he noted. “I’m just not going to grovel in the blood anymore.”

We launched into this past weekend with a mysterious tweet from Bruce Campbell, which teased that *something* Evil Dead-related is coming this September. Our speculation is that Campbell was either talking about A) a new Evil Dead video game, B) the addition of Ash to Mortal Kombat 11, or C) the new book that he’s currently working on writing.

Then again, he very well could have been teasing something else entirely. All we know for sure is that Campbell is not playing Ash anymore in the world of live action… right?

Over the weekend, Campbell and Sam Raimi took part in a Q&A at Texas Frightmare Weekend, and Reddit’s Girafarigno brings us some interesting notes from the panel.

Bruce confirmed that this and himself have nothing to do with Mortal Kombat 11,” the Reddit user reported, seeming to confirm that Campbell’s Twitter tease has nothing to do with Mortal Kombat 11 DLC content. Again, Ash Williams has been rumored as an upcoming DLC fighter but not yet confirmed, so it’s possible that rumor wasn’t even true anyway.

UPDATE: Campbell shot down the MK 11 rumor entirely over on Twitter today.

Bruce shooed the question off just claiming he is releasing another book for the measly price of $15,” Girafarigno also noted, so the tease could indeed be for his brand new book.

The user later added in a reply to the original Reddit post, “Another interesting reaction was when another fan mentioned that it was a shame that Starz wouldn’t make a 4th season of Ash vs Evil Dead and [Raimi’s] response emphasized that STARZ wouldn’t make another season. My reaction to the whole thing was that we would see more of the series on either Netflix or Shudder.”

For now, all we can do is continue to speculate. So feel free to speculate more below!

Believe it or not, today marks *exactly* one year since the final episode of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” aired on Starz, with the Season 3 finale becoming the series finale after Starz pulled the plug on the gory horror-comedy treat. In celebration of that one year anniversary, Netflix has just put the third and final season up for streaming, alongside the previous two seasons.

In Season 3, hometown hero Ash Williams discovers he has a daughter. And when Kelly witnesses a massacre with Ruby’s fingerprints all over it, she returns to warn Ash and Pablo.

Unfortunately, we don’t expect “Ash vs. Evil Dead” to be one of those shows that gets brought back to life after its cancellation, as Bruce Campbell has been pretty clear about the fact that he has officially retired the character of Ash. Back in April of last year, around the time of the series finale, Campbell issued a goodbye statement through his social media accounts.

Here’s some related content for ya, if you’re still finding it hard to let go:

Ash may be no more, but we’re thinking we haven’t seen the last of this franchise!

Better yet, Ash is voiced by Bruce Campbell himself!

The announcement came with a video featuring Campbell in person, and his in-game character model, based on the Ash Vs. Evil Dead iteration.

Ash will be the 17th survivor added to the Dead By Daylight roster since the game’s debut in 2016.

You’ll be able to slip into the familiar blue shirt on April 2 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but Ash will be playable at PAX East 2019 this week.

*Keep up with our ongoing end of the year coverage here*

It’s been said quite a bit in recent years that we’re living in a “golden age” of television, and that’s certainly true when it comes to horror. This year has seen the birth of “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” “Into the Dark” and “Castle Rock,” as well as the continuation of longtime hits like “American Horror Story” and “The Walking Dead.”

Needless to say, horror’s dominance over the small screen continued in 2018, and it’s a testament to how good small screen horror was this year that we couldn’t even trim this list down to a mere 10 episodes and feel good about it. And so, we ended up putting together a list of the *twelve* best horror TV episodes of 2018, collectively chosen by our writers.

Here’s what Meagan Navarro, John Squires and Daniel Kurland loved on TV this year.

AHS Apocalypse 806-1

“American Horror Story: Apocalypse” – ‘Return to Murder House’

  • Chosen by Daniel Kurland

When it was announced that the latest season of “American Horror Story” would function as a crossover season between the show’s “Murder House” and “Coven” years—arguably two of the show’s strongest seasons—fans were understandably excited. However, much like with every season of the show, “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” turned out to be yet another half-baked circle jerk of a season that simultaneously had too many ideas and too few. The execution and the conclusion of “AHS: Apocalypse” may have been problematic, but the season’s high mark was definitely ‘Return to Murder House,’ an episode so satisfying it could very well be the best episode from the show’s entire run.

‘Return to Murder House’ largely served as one big epilogue for all of the tortured spirits from “AHS: Murder House,” acting as a welcome homecoming to the “Murder House” crew. And it also gave those characters the peaceful closure that they weren’t able to get before. Really, it was a big ole love letter to the entirety of “American Horror Story.” and in spite of the season’s many faults, this incredible episode effectively justified the season’s entire existence. And that’s pretty impressive, don’t you think?

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” – ‘Judgement Day’

  • Chosen by Meagan Navarro

The penultimate episode of the final season of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” marked the beginning of an epic apocalyptic battle for Ash and the Ghost Beaters. Season 3 was also the first season to not have its final showdown set at the cabin, a welcome and refreshing change of pace. Moreover, it brought the series full circle by tying up story threads planted in season one, and Ash’s daughter Brandy finally followed in daddy’s footsteps proper with her own Deadite battle in a shed. Ruby was finally vanquished in a satisfying way, and the small glimpse of Kandar the Destroyer teased a larger-than-life fight for humanity. Everything that came before was building up to this grand finale, and we weren’t worthy.

“Castle Rock” – ‘The Queen’

  • Chosen by John Squires

As a whole, I was pretty disappointed by Hulu’s “Castle Rock,” which began with such promise but quickly fizzled out and was ultimately very unsatisfying in the end. The brilliant concept of telling new stories in the world of Stephen King is one with endless potential, but the debut season of “Castle Rock” hardly lived up to it. That is, until “The Queen” came along.

Driven by a Emmy-worthy performance from Sissy Spacek, the season’s seventh episode was one of the all-time finest episodes of horror television, depicting Ruth Deaver’s utterly heartbreaking struggles with Alzheimer’s in a brilliantly immersive way. As Ruth jumped between space and time and reckoned with past and present, we went through all of it with her, culminating in the total heartbreak of a confused Ruth accidentally killing the love of her life. Thanks to this episode alone, “Castle Rock” became unforgettable television in 2018.

“Channel Zero: The Dream Door” – ‘Love Hurts’

  • Chosen by John Squires

Not surprisingly, the team behind Syfy’s “Channel Zero” hit another home run with “The Dream Door,” the anthology series’ fourth (and quite possibly best) season. Like the previous seasons, “The Dream Door” managed to create an unforgettable new horror icon in the form of Pretzel Jack, a make-believe childhood creation that comes to life and wreaks havoc in the lives of its creator Jillian and her husband Tom. The season’s high point was ‘Love Hurts’ (episode 3), which really solidified “The Dream Door” as another stroke of brilliance for the series.

‘Love Hurts’ kicked off with an incredibly intense sequence of violence but culminated in most unexpected fashion, with the deadly Pretzel Jack and Jillian embracing each other with a hug. It’s the episode where everything started coming together, and it’s also the one that made it clear that Pretzel Jack is one of the best horror characters in years. We learned here that Pretzel Jack is Jillian’s “emotional defense system,” and the surprisingly emotional realization that the season’s villain and the season’s heroine are one and the same really took the story’s concept to a whole new level of compelling. The best horror stories use monsters as reflections of ourselves, and “The Dream Door” rather brilliantly knocked that ball completely out of the park.

“Channel Zero” remains the most exciting horror franchise going right now.

“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” – ‘Dreams in a Witch House’

  • Chosen by Meagan Navarro

Chapter five of Netflix’s deliciously satanic “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” evoked a sense of nostalgia for the monster-of-the-week episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And a little bit of A Nightmare on Elm Street, too. The episode saw Sabrina and the Spellman household under attack from the demon she accidentally loosed in the previous episode. That demon, Batibat, traps its victims in a deep nightmare state, causing Sabrina, her cousin Ambrose, and her aunts to face their worst fears. Batibat makes for a fun foe, but this episode also allowed Sabrina to shine as the hero for once, with only a little outside help from her aunts, Salem, and the mysterious Ms. Wardwell. It was all around an entertaining high point for the show’s debut season.

“The Haunting of Hill House” – ‘Two Storms’

  • Chosen by Meagan Navarro

Continuous long tracking takes, circling camera trickery, and intricate technical preparation that required over a month of choreography and rehearsal all culminated in what is arguably television’s finest hour in 2018. Right on the heels of episode five’s twist revelation behind the Bent-Neck Lady, standout “The Haunting of Hill House” episode ‘Two Storms’ brought the surviving family members together under one roof for Nell’s funeral. Narratively, it centered on two storms; a literal storm set in the family’s past at Hill House, and a metaphorical storm of raging emotions among family members with unresolved anger toward one another. Both storms brought the horror, driving further wedges between the Crain family and redefining what a haunting can be.

‘Two Storms’ was masterful horror at its finest.

“Inside No. 9” – ‘Dead Line’

  • Chosen by Meagan Navarro

Series creators Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton are masters of dark comedy and shocking twists, but the special Halloween episode of “Inside No. 9” that aired live on BBC Two on October 28 managed to top an already high bar of brilliance with a clever, meta episode of pure terror. What began as a live recording of an episode that sees its lead character getting into strange trouble over a cell phone he found in a graveyard becomes something else entirely as audio problems kick in. Cue the technical difficulties card and apologies from the network, as they insist the kinks are being worked through. Viewers that stuck through it found a meta horror story unfolding live in the studio, a site tied to rumors of serious hauntings. Similar to Ghostwatch, ‘Dead Line’ brought the dread and fear by way of live television.

“Into the Dark” – ‘POOKA!’

  • Chosen by John Squires

It’s up for debate whether the episodes of Blumhouse and Hulu’s “Into the Dark” are actually episodes of television or full-on feature films (honestly, I could make compelling arguments for both), but since “Into the Dark” is indeed a TV series, I don’t think anyone will have issue with me including its best episode (to date) on this list. While I wasn’t a big fan of the first two episodes, Nacho Vigalondo’s Christmas-themed ‘POOKA!’ totally won me over, centered on a new hit holiday toy that wreaks havoc on the actor tasked with bringing the character to life. ‘POOKA!’ is a total mind-fuck with one hell of a twist, coming together so wonderfully in the surprising final moments that it’ll likely have you watching it again immediately afterwards.

And trust me, ‘POOKA!’ is even better the second time around.

“Santa Clarita Diet” – ‘The Queen of England’

  • Chosen by Meagan Navarro

Season two of Netflix’s gory zombie comedy “Santa Clarita Diet” managed to be bigger and funnier in every way, and the fourth episode catapulted the mythology forward in a major way. We knew from season one that Sheila’s (Drew Barrymore) undead status was connected to the mysterious red ball she threw up, but ‘The Queen of England’ showed what happens when the ball is allowed to exist at room temperature. Meet Mr. Ball-legs, a spider-like thing sprouted from zombie Ramona’s barfed up red ball. Combined with new connections in regard to Mr. Ball-legs, Gary’s (Nathan Fillion) lonely severed head, and more Hammond hijinks hilarity, this episode was not just a season highlight, but a *series* highlight.

“The Terror” – ‘The Ladder’

  • Chosen by Meagan Navarro

AMC’s “The Terror,” the ten-episode series based on Dan Simmons’ novel of the same name, was a slow burn tale of terror about Captain Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition to the Arctic. As the two polar explorer ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror become stranded in thick ice, the crews face starvation, mutiny, cannibalism, and a mysterious monster, the season taking its time to unravel the narrative. This is why episode three delivered such a thrilling jolt of excitement. It marked the shocking demise of lead character John Franklin (Ciaran Hinds), expertly handled in one of the tensest sequences of pure panic and horror. Franklin barely has time to process his party getting slaughtered by the bear-monster before it ripped off his leg and knocked him down a deep hole, plummeting to his death.

We damn sure didn’t see that coming.

“The Walking Dead” – ‘Evolution’

  • Chosen by John Squires

As tired as the show has become in recent years, even many longtime haters of “The Walking Dead” were in agreement that the first half of Season 9 was home to some pretty damn strong episodes, including the sendoff episode for Rick Grimes and the follow-up episode to it, which jumped six years into the future. But I’d like to make a case for “Evolution” (the mid-season finale) being the strongest episode of the AMC zombie series this year, primarily because it was an hour of television that finally made “The Walking Dead” scary again.

“Evolution” introduced us to a new group of villains known as The Whisperers, shocking the characters with the crazy twist that a pack of zombies that were hunting them were actually human beings disguised as zombies. The encounter with this creepy new threat culminated in a dark, foggy battle in a graveyard that was one of the show’s most downright terrifying sequences to date. And while it may be too late to win back viewers who tuned out long ago, “Evolution” damn sure made the back half of Season 9 a must-watch for yours truly.

Here’s hoping the horror of “Evolution” was a proper reflection of what’s coming next.

“The X-Files” – ‘The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat’

  • Chosen by John Squires

The eleventh season of “The X-Files” may have ended with a disappointing whimper (even Gillian Anderson herself seemed quite disappointed by the finale), but the season was certainly not without its gems. My personal favorite episode of what may end up being the show’s final season? The Darin Morgan-penned/directed “The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat,” centered on the fascinating idea of the Mandela Effect; in short, the phenomenon wherein we have strong memories of things from the past that either doesn’t exist at all, or simply aren’t how we remember them.

In the episode, Mulder and Scully are confronted by a man named Reggie, who claims to be a former member of their team. Later, Mulder eventually comes face to face with the mysterious Dr. Thaddeus They, a brainwashing doctor who’s been pulling America’s strings all along. As bonkers and fun as the episode was, it rather brilliantly used the Mandela Effect to touch upon the idea that none of us really know what’s real and what’s not anymore, making it a timely social commentary at its core. If you’re asking me, it’s an all time great episode for the show.

“Forehead Sweat” also operated as a more satisfying finale than the actual finale. Go figure.

It’s not actually a horror show but an honorable mention must be given to the ‘Mister Knifey-Hands’ episode of “The Goldbergs,” which brought back Robert Englund as Freddy!

Today, the final season of Starz’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead” arrives on DVD and Blu-ray, bringing the end to Ash Williams’ epic, decades-spanning story into your home video collection, right alongside The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. With Bruce Campbell officially retired as Ash, it’s truly over this time, and we can’t help but be in a sappy mood all over again this week. Mind you, Campbell is still voicing Ash for an upcoming video game, but it seems pretty safe to say that we’ll never again see him actually on screen as the character.

Not to depress you too much, but YouTube’s xHeather360x just cut together an absolutely brilliant tribute to the entirety of the Evil Dead saga, particularly focused on the three seasons of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” that Starz gifted us with. It’s a wonderful “in memoriam” piece for the story of Ash Williams, cut together so well that you might even squeeze out a couple tears.

Sure, “Ash vs. Evil Dead” was more focused on over-the-top splatter and wonderfully immature laughs, but the heart and soul of the series is captured perfectly in this tribute.

Even Campbell himself shared it on Twitter, writing “Very groovy Evil Dead montage.”

The third and final season of Ash vs Evil Dead arrives on Blu-ray this Tuesday, August 21, and with it the final bow from Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. The actor has portrayed the reluctant hero for nearly 40 years, taking Ash from innocuous bystander to wisecracking deadite slayer to finally a man with a deadite fighting family of his own. For thirty episodes, Starz let Campbell and team loose on screen, unleashing torrents of blood, gore, humor, and heart, culminating in one epic finale that serves as Ash’s swan song. Or is it?

Ahead of the season three Blu-ray release, we chatted with Campbell about Ash vs Evil Dead, the future, and his retirement of one of horror’s most beloved characters, Ash Williams.

The final two episodes of Ash vs Evil Dead proved to be the biggest and the most divisive of the series. Written and directed by Rick Jacobson, Ash finally steps up to embrace and fulfill his prophesied role in one epic battle with the largest deadite the series had seen yet. It also brought the series full circle, with Jacobson tying up loose ends from the beginning of season one while also incorporating the entire franchise’s larger mythology. For major fans, the homages and level of detail are gratifying.

Of the ending and Jacobson’s work, Campbell explains, “Not all directors think like that. And he’s a very story thinking director, and he wrote the last two. He’s like, ‘You know what? Screw this, give me that script,’ and we let him do it because he was so possessed with how this should have ended. And we all agreed. We were in total agreement with what should happen, how we should wrap this up. Because you know, TV business is a fickle business. We didn’t know if we’re going to be canceled or not. So, we wanted to not leave fans in the lurch. If we got picked up, could we continue it? Yeah, of course. But we wanted to be ready, and we were.”

Despite closure for all the characters, the final moments have become a point of contention for some fans. To those bothered by it, Campbell responds, “Some people are pissed. They’re like, ‘Oh, you can’t leave us like that.’ It is an ending though. Ash’s destiny has been fulfilled. He’s not just a guy who lives in a trailer home with a lot of bad habits. There’s something else to the guy, and you know what? Let him go on his next great adventure.

Though Army of Darkness was released in theaters in 1993, principal photography took place two years prior, which meant a much longer length of time passed before Campbell donned the chainsaw again. Coming back into the role, with the creative leeway granted by Starz, meant exploring Ash in new, unexpected ways that Campbell looks on fondly.

“That’s the beauty of coming back 25 years later. I hadn’t played Ash since 1991. That’s a long time. So, I’ve actually had two decades of experience of acting that I could finally go, ‘Okay, let’s take that cookie cutter character, and try and-‘ because we tried to evolve him. He was just sort of innocuous in the first one, tried to become a rogue in the second one, was the ugly American in the third one, sort of getting his Ash sea legs, and then now we can just let him loose.”

It wasn’t just the evolution of Ash from middle-aged loser to caring father and team player that Campbell enjoyed exploring, but the creativity of the series as well. When asked if he had any favorite episodes, he cites season 2 episode 7, “The loony bin is my favorite of that season for sure. I could pick one, probably. The pilot from the first one, from the first season, because Sam Raimi set the bar,” then adds, “and the finale, the two-parter from season three.”

Ash vs Evil Dead

But along with the heartfelt evolution of Ash’s character also came the gory splatstick moments that fans loved so much. As great as they are on screen to watch, they’re difficult for the actors to endure. This season’s newcomer, Arielle Carver-O’Neill as Ash’s daughter Brandy, discovered what fellow actors Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo had already learned about the Evil Dead universe; it’s physically tough work. Campbell shares of the first time Carver-O’Neill felt the force of the blood cannon, “When she got her first blast of blood, we’re all there to watch because it’s important to watch them being initiated. To see the look on her face, the reaction was not acting. Her reaction was, ‘Oh my God.’ And it was cold, because we’re in those warehouses in the middle of the New Zealand winter. “

That physical aspect, and the gory nature of the series, leads into why Campbell decided to retire the character. “These are long, tedious [shoots] … you’re lying on cellar floors, in the cold damp floor, covered in blood.” He explains, It’s part of the reason too, for hanging up the chain saw. There’s physical stuff that you have to do that I don’t really either feel like doing anymore, or I can’t do anymore. Or I shouldn’t do, anymore because I’ve actually escaped from these movies relatively unscathed. Beside a hamstring this, and a stubbed toe here, not too bad. But that’s part of the reason.”

In terms of reprising the beloved antihero on screen, Campbell says of the season three Blu-ray release, “This is it. After this drops, you’ve got the full package. This is all. It’s on the table. This is it. This Ash’s life story right here.”

Though Campbell has retired the character, that retirement doesn’t extend to the entire universe of Evil Dead, or certain iterations of the character. As previously reported, Campbell will be voicing Ash in an upcoming VR game. Moreover, Campbell is very interested in continuing the stories of Pablo (Ray Santiago), Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo), and especially that of Mia (Jane Levy),

I would. Oh my God. In two seconds I would continue the Mia story, because she’s a badass now. I would continue the Ghost Beaters, because Kelly and Pablo are badasses now. Pablo is a shaman, so those were his super spy skills. She’s just a pissed off revenge filled hussy. So, I think it’d be great. I would love it, you know, and I don’t even care if bring in a new Ash character. Let’s go.

As excited as he is to get Levy and director Fede Alvarez back on board for a follow up to 2013’s Evil Dead, nothing has clicked into place yet. Of Alvarez, in particular, Campbell shares, “Fede, his best is yet to come. This guy is going to be like Guillermo del Toro kind of big. I think he’s just immensely talented. So, hey, if we can get him back, great.” It’s clear that there’s still a lot of creative spark in the franchise, though maybe without Campbell on screen. When asked what’s next, Campbell simply says, “We’re just gonna wait and see what happens. This [series] is what we had focused all of our attention on, and now that this is over, now we’ll see what else comes down the pike.“

Whatever incarnation of Ash or the Evil Dead universe comes up next, at least Starz gave us three great seasons of Ash vs Evil Dead. Grab season 3 on Blu-ray on August 21.

Lionsgate Games and Apps Ministry’s Deploy and Destroy, which launched back in May, and features everyone’s favorite boomstick-wielding king in Ash Williams, has received a brand new update today that brings with it tournament play. But that’s only part of the news.

In an interview with Variety, Lionsgate’s Peter Levin, president of interactive ventures, games and digital strategies, states that while the game currently includes characters from Ash vs. Evil Dead and Divergent, the plan is to potentially include other franchises in the game. Such as John Wick or Saw.

“We spend a lot of time meeting with talented developers from all over the world who are passionate about our movies and TV shows,” Levin said. “Apps Ministry are huge fans of the Divergent series, and that’s where the conversation about Deploy and Destroy started. As we got into the early stages of development, we realized the design and mechanics in front of us could make for a super fun mashup of fan-favorite IP — imagine John Wick and Rambo fighting in an arena modeled after the cabin from Ash vs Evil Dead, for instance.”

Levin’s plan is to include not only Lionsgate properties, but other IPs that fans would enjoy. “While our vision is to deliver the ultimate mashup for action fans, our main priority is making sure we find fun characters that match the tone of this world we’ve created,” he said. “Perhaps the crew from Reservoir Dogs could take on a team made up of John Wick, Ash, Rambo and Barney Ross. The possibilities are endless.”

The ratio of heroes and protagonists in horror tends to favor women by a wide margin. We celebrate final girls like Laurie Strode, Nancy Thompson, Ellen Ripley, and more on the regular, but not nearly as many men reach the end credits of a horror film; even less often are they the ones who save the day. Beloved actor Bruce Campbell is a pioneer in that respect.

The definitive scream king, Bruce Campbell has played so many characters that have been put through the ringer in horror, saving the world time and time again from demonic armies, ancient mummies, vengeful dead, witches, and various other creatures. It’s difficult to think of any other actor working in horror who has been consistently dealt such physically demanding roles, and Campbell manages to make it all look effortless every time. His talent for physical comedy surely helps.

Campbell has reached a major milestone, turning 60 today, so in honor of his birthday we look back at 6 of his greatest contributions to the genre.

Joe Fasulo – The Woods

Lucky McKee’s 2006 supernatural film isn’t as celebrated as it should be. Starring Agnes Bruckner, Patricia Clarkson, and Rachel Nichols, this is primarily a female driven horror film set in an isolated all-girls boarding school in 1965. Agnes Bruckner plays lead Heather, a rebellious teen sent to Falburn Academy when her parents no longer can deal with her destructive ways. Falburn Academy, however, is a front for a coven of witches that intend to use the students for their nefarious plans. Campbell plays Heather’s father, Joe. Truthfully, he isn’t in it very much, but his role is crucial to Heather’s story and his scenes important. It’s also a different side to Campbell than what we’ve seen from the actor’s work before; his portrayal of a devoted but broken dad is great.

John Loftmore – Waxwork II: Lost in Time

This underappreciated sequel once again finds protagonists Mark Loftmore (Zach Galligan) and Sarah Brightman travelling through alternate worlds, each a self-contained horror film inspired segment. Campbell appears in a black and white segment that’s an homage to The Haunting. Or rather, if The Haunting was a comedy thanks to the comedic chops of Campbell. His character, John Loftmore, is the lead of the investigation team sent into the haunted house, and to say that the poltergeist activity gets dangerous would be an understatement. Especially for poor John Loftmore. Fans of Campbell’s humor should not miss this one.

Elvis Presley – Bubba Ho-Tep

I’m not sure really anything else needs to be said other than Campbell plays an elderly man living in a retirement home in Texas, claiming to be Elvis Presley. If you need more than that, then just know that it was written and directed by Don Coscarelli (Phantasm series), and that Elvis Presley teams up with President John F. Kennedy to save the residents of the retirement home from an ancient Egyptian mummy. Their battle is far tougher than it sounds considering they need motorized wheelchairs to get around. It’s also as hilarious as it sounds.

Himself – My Name is Bruce

A horror comedy that stars Campbell and directed by Campbell, My Name is Bruce features the actor playing himself. While “Bruce Campbell” is on set filming a B-horror movie, he’s mistaken for the character Ash and forced to fight a real monster invasion. In other words, this is a movie made specifically for Bruce Campbell fans by Bruce Campbell himself, filmed in his hometown. There’s an added level of humor to an already goofy horror comedy with in jokes aimed squarely at Campbell fans. Example: Ellen Sandweiss plays a character named Cheryl, a wink to the Evil Dead.

Jack Forrest – Maniac Cop

This action horror film written by Larry Cohen and directed by William Lustig is fun for a lot of reasons, but foremost for bringing horror’s two best scream kings together in one film: Tom Atkins and Bruce Campbell. When a killer dressed as a cop begins slaying people in New York City, Officer Jack Forrest (Campbell) becomes the number one suspect. By his own wife, no less. Granted, his suspicious behavior is because he’s having an affair with another officer. Campbell gets to play both the suspect seeking to clear his name and one of the lead protagonists going toe to toe with the real killer.

Ashley J. Williams – The Evil Dead series

One of horror’s most beloved characters, and one that fans have refused to let go of since the release of the 1981 film that started the journey, Ashley J. Williams is a true horror icon. From the DIY spook fest of The Evil Dead to the third season’s conclusion of Ash vs Evil Dead, Campbell has evolved Ash from a quiet university student with romance in mind on that fateful weekend away in the woods to a wise-cracking screw up discovering he’s a dad. He also happens to be the prophesied hero that falls from the sky to save the world from the deadites, time and time again. From barely surviving his youth to an older, wiser(ish) antihero, Campbell made every step of Ash’s journey memorable. More importantly, he made it a blast to watch. After three films and three seasons of a television series, Campbell has officially retired from the role. Considering all that Ash has been through over the decades, Campbell has earned his rest.

What’s next for the Evil Dead franchise, now that “Ash vs. Evil Dead” is over and Bruce Campbell has officially retired from playing Ash Williams? Is there even a “next”?

Well, Fede Alvarez recently kinda-sorta expressed interest in making a sequel to his remake, and there are certainly any number of ways the franchise could continue without Bruce. On a related note, franchise producer Rob Tapert just recently noted that he and Sam Raimi “have been talking about what a new incarnation would be.”

So what does Bruce Campbell think about Evil Dead continuing on without him? A fan just asked him that very question on Twitter, and Campbell actually responded. The fan asked, “Even though you’re retiring Ash, would you give your blessing to Rob/Ted/Dana/Ray if they wanted to carry on the Evil Dead universe story?” Campbell replied…

“Not that they need it, but of course. Lots of unexplored stories and crossovers in the Evil Dead universe. .”

As for what form a continuation would take, well, your guess is as good as ours.

Bruce Campbell may be retired as Ash and “Ash vs. Evil Dead” may be, well, dead, but we can be fairly certain that Evil Dead will eventually return in some way, shape or form. In fact, remake director Fede Alvarez recently kinda-sorta expressed interest in making a sequel, and there are any number of ways the franchise could continue without Bruce.

At Motor City Comic Con over the weekend, producer Rob Tapert was asked about the future of the franchise, post-“Ash vs. Evil Dead,” and he had this to say.

We knew going into the third season that there was a chance [we’d get cancelled]… the ratings had been turning down and it’s hard to change that,” Tapert told the crowd. “Starz had been a good partner. Pretty much letting us do anything we wanted. It was probably just not the right outlet for it… but they waited until the ratings came in for the third season. We sold the rights to the first two seasons to Netflix, but they won’t let a competitor have something [that’s theirs]… which I kind of understand. It’s unfortunate.”

He continued, “We had a really great idea for where it was going to go in the future, and it was something Sam [Raimi] had been talking about: rebooting a movie. What that scenario could be. And then, Bruce wrote to Sam and I one day… ‘If they don’t [renew us], I’m retiring from Ash.’ [So we said], ‘But wait Bruce, what about a movie?!’ [He said], ‘No, I’m retiring.’ So. We’ll see.”

Sam and myself have been talking about what a new incarnation would be.”

The biggest bummer in regards to “Ash vs. Evil Dead” being cancelled by Starz is the series finale promised a pretty damn cool fourth season. If the series had been renewed, Season 4 would’ve put Ash Williams into a post-apocalyptic setting, battling Deadites in the wasteland… with a sexy robot sidekick and a Mad Max-style armored car.

As we exclusively outlined before the Season 3 finale aired…

“From what we’re told, if “Ash vs. Evil Dead” had been blessed with a fourth season, it would have taken Ashy Slashy to the future. Think sci-fi post-apocalyptic, like Mad Max meets Fallout, only with…robots!”

While we’ll never actually get to see that planned fourth season, at least we’ve got artist P.L. Boucher on our side. I say this because Boucher just unleashed a painted poster for the faux project Mad Ash: Gory Road, which he describes as “the Ash vs. Evil Dead/Mad Max mash-up we’ve all been wishing for since that glorious finale!

The art is so badass that it makes us both happy and super sad…

Starz may have pulled the plug on “Ash vs. Evil Dead” after just three seasons, but the series went out on a pretty cool – if not a tad bit cruel – note this past Sunday night. After fulfilling his ultimate destiny and vanquishing the massive Kaiju Deadite known as Kandar, Ash woke up in a post-apocalyptic future, his hand restored and his beloved Delta ’88 transformed into a Mad Max-style killing machine.

Ash’s final word? “GROOVY,” of course.

In celebration of the end, not only of the series but of the Ash character, Bruce Campbell just took to Twitter to share some behind the scenes shots from those final moments.

Campbell tweeted…

A few “last images” from Ash vs. Evil Dead. Goodbyes are always awkward, but what a great Kiwi crew! Props to Rob Tapert and Rick Jacobson for a quality finale.”

Forever the king. For. Ever.

With “Ash vs. Evil Dead” cancelled and Bruce Campbell announcing that he’s officially retired from playing Ash Williams, it’s impossible not to be a little sad. At the same time, we must consider how fortunate we’ve been, as fans of the Evil Dead franchise. Not only did we get a kickass remake, but we essentially got “Evil Dead 4” as a 15+ hour movie!

For three seasons, Campbell showed off some of his finest acting chops to date as an older, still wildly immature version of Ash, and for that we feel pretty damn fortunate.

Ash Williams has been in our lives for the past 37 years, first appearing as the fresh faced “final guy” in Sam Raimi’s original Evil Dead. It was in Evil Dead 2 that Ash truly became the Ash we know and love, losing his hand and replacing it with a chainsaw. He then went back in time for Army of Darkness, and fulfilled his destiny in “Ash vs. Evil Dead.”

Via @dextermcwriter on Twitter, check out side-by-side images of the very first and very last shot of Bruce Campbell as Ash from the long-running Evil Dead franchise!

And if that alone wasn’t depressing enough, the series finale of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” was also the final battle for Ash, as Bruce Campbell has retired the character.

Hold us. We need to be held.

Every week this season, Starz unleashed a behind the scenes featurette video for each episode after it aired, and we’ve got the final one for you today. Executive producer Rob Tapert offers up some insights into the finale in this one, talking about the massive Kaiju Deadite and Ash’s “goodbye” speech to his friends/family that probably made you cry.

Back in 1992, Sam Raimi took his Evil Dead franchise in a new direction with Army of Darkness, a full-on slapstick horror film that sent Ash (Bruce Campbell) back in time to battle a medieval undead army. While the theatrical version of the film ended with Ash battling a deadite inside S-Mart, the original finale was much darker. After Ash takes too many drops of a special potion, he pulls a Rip Van Winkle and awakens 100 years in a post-apocalyptic future. No matter which ending you prefer, Raimi and Campbell teased a fourth Evil Dead, which became fan obsession. For nearly 20 years we begged and pleaded for an Evil Dead 4

In 2003, things took an interesting turn with the success of Freddy vs. Jason, which nearly resulted in a sequel that would pit Ash against Freddy and Jason. Only, Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures had huge success with their remake of The Grudge, which then caused them to turn their focus on rebooting The Evil Dead with a fresh filmmaker. While we were blessed with the Fede Alvarez-directed Evil Dead back in 2013, it wasn’t timely and was extremely underappreciated – it still wasn’t our long-promised Evil Dead 4, even if Ash made an appearance in the closing of the credits.

Just two years later, on October 31, 2015, Starz premiered “Ash vs. Evil Dead”, which boasted the full-on return of Bruce Campbell as Ash. While it wasn’t Evil Dead 4, it was exactly what the doctor ordered… and then some. A full season of Ash kicking deadite ass? Yes, please. We were then blessed with two more seasons, which just concluded this past Sunday night. Shit, we got a remake and literally 10+ hours of a television series, not to mention Raimi also sneaking the wonderful Drag Me to Hell into the mix back in 2009.

To recap, our bellies are full, right? Nope.

Coming from a place of love and eternal gratefulness of what we’ve already been given, I can’t help but feel like the series finale to “Ash vs. Evil Dead” is anything short of a cruel joke. You see, the final episode concluded with a sequence in which, after a long sleep, Ash wakes up in a post-apocalyptic future. Does that sound familiar? When Army of Darkness concluded, we were left with hope and spent many excruciating years begging for a followup. With “Ash vs. Evil Dead”, we were left with a cliffhanger and Campbell announcing the retirement of his character. There’s a ton of irony here in that we got everything we could have ever wanted and yet somehow came full circle back to Ash in a post-apocalyptic Detroit and are left begging for more. The only difference is now we’re left with no hope, which is just cruel.

I’m left wondering how this happened? Was this the plan all along? Were Raimi, Tapert and Campbell giggling as they brought us full circle back to our fandom purgatory? If so, it’s such cosmic brutality that I can’t help but laugh. On the other hand, it sort of feels like Starz put the filmmakers in a weird position of not knowing for sure if there would be a fourth season of “Ash vs. Evil Dead”. The announcement came just ahead of the ninth episode airing, which means, assuming this decision was actually made that week, everything was already delivered for airing. Then again, if Raimi and co. had plans laid out for another season, why would Campbell so quickly turn in his chainsaw and boomstick?

It’s highly unlikely that the Evil Dead will say dormant, but it does feel like a kick in the nuts to know that we’ll never actually see Ash’s arc carried to a full conclusion.

Then again, perhaps that’s always been the franchise’s cruel destiny.

We’ve spent so much time the past couple days mourning the cancellation of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” that it’s been easy to forget that it’s not actually over… not yet, at least.

We still have one more episode left to go, with the Season 3/series finale airing this Sunday on Starz. We’ve had the pleasure of previewing the finale and we can tell you that it’s pretty damn enjoyable and satisfying, delivering an epic final battle between Ash and a MASSIVE Kaiju Deadite, some nice emotion, and a final few minutes unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the Evil Dead universe. We think you’re gonna love it… and be left begging for more.

Preview the finale below!

In the final episode, “The Mettle of Man”…

“Elk Grove undergoes a major battle that takes place on the streets, Ash rides high in a military tank, speeding across shaky, post-apocalyptic Elk Grove. Ash fights the biggest battle of them all – a sixty foot tall Kandarian demon.”

Don’t miss the series finale this Sunday night, April 29.
