Fernando Barreda Luna Moves From ‘Atrocious’ To ‘Kiss Of Vengeance’!

Director Fernando Barreda Luna made a splash last year with his found footage horror film Atrocious (also a Bloody-Disgusting selects title), and he’s doing a hyper-violent western short to cleanse his palate between features, Kiss Of Vengeance.

Kiss of Vengeance is “a western tale about a girl who becomes a true hero that fights the Mafia, inspired by a deep desire of pursuing the killers who executed her family in a horrible massacre back in the 90’s. This is the lonely journey about a renegade young rider who can’t trust anyone but her own skills. Set in the outlawed border of Mexico and U.S. ruled by the Cartels.”

Bloody Disgusting Presents “Killer Sisters’ Midnight Hour” On Hulu and Hulu Plus!

Today, Bloody Disgusting Selects launches “Killer Sisters’ Midnight Hour”, its first ever one-hour episodic TV show on the free, ad-supported Hulu and Hulu Plus subscription service!

Directed by Mike Williamson, “From their home kitchen studio, the Killer Sisters highlight shortened versions of some of the most popular titles from the Bloody Disgusting Selects catalogue. Each episode features the Sisters’ color commentary and ends with a bloody death. Favorite deaths include: zombie horde, werewolf, and full body amputation!”

The featured movies have been condensed into one hour so viewers can enjoy the bloody highlights in this TV show format. The full-length versions of these highlighted films are available in the Movies section of Hulu and Hulu Plus. The first four episodes of the show are BD Selects titles Atrocious, The Woman, Chop, and Rammbock: Berlin Undead. You can watch the one-hour TV episodes streaming here. Bloody Disgusting Selects Titles Arrive On Hulu!

Bloody Disgusting Selects is now available on Hulu and Hulu Plus!

Hulu subscribers can now enjoy full length horror features Atrocious, The Woman, Phase 7, Coldfish, Chop, and Rammbock: Berlin Undead for FREE. In addition, later this month we’re unrolling a very special “show” that wraps various BD Selects titles with an Elvira-esque series. It’ll appear on Hulu. Watch for news on that soon.

Exclusive: Shannon Larkin Reviews BD Selects ‘Atrocious’

Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin has written up another awesome movie review. This time, he tackles Bloody-Disgusting Selects Atrocious, which will be in theaters August 17th – 26th. The Spanish found footage horror film details the last five days of Cristian Quintanilla and his siblings and the unnatural circumstances they encountered.

Godsmack just finished co-headlining the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival and has several more tour dates lined up for the rest of summer and the beginning of fall.

Hell-O Horrorhounds!

I want to write a small pre-face for this weeks review. Upon getting the opportunity to review films here, with my undying love of horror and all aspects of the genre, and being in the entertainment biz for so long, I really didn’t want to write any kind of negative reviews because I realize just how hard it is to make a film of any size or budget, and how much heart and soul goes into the process. With that said, I promised you all that I would give my honest opinion as a horror fan and lay it out exactly as I see it. You know what they say about opinions…so if I have to be the asshole, I will tread as gently as possible and give props where they are do.

I’ll start the review with a little positivity: If you are a fan of the first Blair Witch Project, you will love Atrocious. Personally, I was bored to tears with BWP until the last ten minutes or so (much to the dismay of a lot of my friends who liked the film). The plot of Atrocious is very similar, with a group of people investigating an Urban Legend. This time, the group is the Quintanilla family, who travel to an old house in Spain where it is said the spirit of a girl named Melinda inhabits the woods. Opinions are varied in whether Melinda is a good or evil spirit, as we’re told there are many different variations on the legend. For instance, if you get lost in the labyrinthine woods at night, Melinda with show you the way out; but don’t turn your back on her or you might be sorry.

The film is shot in first person through the lens of two of the kid’s cameras. Oldest brother Cristian (Cristian Valencia) and his younger sister July (July Valencia) consider themselves budding paranormal investigators. They both do a decent job acting, but the dialogue is bland an unexciting, making character development a bore. Coupled with that, and the fact that it takes a good 45 minutes until the first kill, I was trying to keep interested in the story and fighting the instinct to fast forward. Then finally, blood is found and the cameras follow the trail to a creepy well (sound familiar?) where the first body is seen dead at the bottom. I won’t spoil it, but I even thought the first “victim” was a lame choice, and by this point was irritated with the pace and camera work. I understand building tension and have seen it done brilliantly (Paranormal Activity for one of a million examples) but really felt no pressing sense of dread at this point.

When the family realizes there is serious trouble, another member goes missing, so everyone hightails it into the maze of woods (at night!) to search, and everyone promptly gets separated. Then it really goes all “Blair Witch” and does that “shaky cam with night vision running through the woods scared at night” shit that I must admit I hate, and furthermore, after a few cold ones I actually felt nauseous.

This goes on for way too long.

For a little positive vibes, I will say the location was fantastic, with the labyrinth in the woods being genuinely menacing and scary.

The survivors make it back to the house and we get the OMG twist, which I admit I wasn’t expecting, but alas, too little too late, and certainly not enough to save sitting through the whole film for me.

Again, I felt the same way about BWP, and in fact, if you change the names and location, this would basically be my review of that film too.

Atrocious: 2 stars out of five. I won’t be adding this one to my collection☹

Bloody Disgusting Selects: Action-Styled Action in Post-Apocalyptic ‘Hellacious Acres’!!

I’m super excited to report that we’ve acquired North American rights to the post-apocalyptic comedy Hellacious Acres: The Case of John Glass for limited theatrical (we’ll be going art house with this guy), VOD and DVD release as part of their Bloody Disgusting Selects film series. The pic was first announced here on Bloody this past June and premiered at Fantasia.

Montreal-based director Pat Tremblay wrote, directed and played the titular character in Hellacious along with editing, co-scoring and creating most of the visual effects. Cast includes Navin Pratap, Jamie Abrams, Paula J. Davis, Laurent Lecompte and Francis Dubois.

“The story centers on a man suffering from amnesia who wakes up inside a cryogenic freezer as a robotic voice bombards him with information about World War III.”

Inside you’ll find what is easily one of my favorite trailers of the year. Get ready for “action-styled action” and a whole lotta walking…

Tremblay’s most recent films Heads of Control: The Gorul Baheu Brain Expedition and Truck Lover screened as part of Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinema.

Hellacious Acres was acquired out of its North American premiere as an official selection of the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal.

Bloody Disgusting Selects: Trailer for Uncut ‘Cold Fish’ Release

Updated with official trailer! I think we got out of the gate pretty strong with the release of Rammbock (now available on DVD and VOD), but right now we’re gearing up for both Phase 7 (in theaters July 17) and what I think is one of the best movies of the year, Cold Fish, Sion Sono’s absolutely psychotic Japanese black comedy in the vein of a Takashi Miike film. I’d go on record as pretty much guaranteeing that you’re going to LOVE it (I reviewed it last September out of TIFF).

In order to keep Cold Fish UNCUT, Bloody Disgusting Selects is going out with the film UNRATED in limited arthouses beginning on August 5, which could expand if it does well enough. We’ve got those dates for you inside. For those of you not in the limited marketplace, Cold Fish will arrive on DVD and iTunes August 23, with an Amazon pre-order option now available. VOD fans (that’s me!) can catch it as it begins to spread from September 23-November 22.

The main reason we started Bloody Disgusting Selects was to find quality horror films – new and old – and bring them to you dear readers. Nothing excites me more than being THE site to actually find a way to bring you something nobody else would, which is why I’m beyond excited to reveal that we’ve acquired U.S. rights to the Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto’s (“The Mo Brothers”) Indonesian splatterfest Macabre!!

Macabre, also known as “Darah”, is off-the-wall violent and has been called the “Indonesian Inside“.

Starring Ario Bayu, Julie Estelle, Imelda Therinne, Shareefa Daanish, Arifin Putra, “Two newlyweds, along with 4 of their best friends, interrupt their travels to pick up a troubled girl on an abandoned stretch of roadway. When they return her to her ancestral home, the night turns into a crimson-hell for the 6 friends, who find themselves trapped and hunted down by Dara and her cult-like family of deadly protégés, born and raised to systematically eliminate unsuspecting passerby for one nefarious reason.”

With Rammbock: Berlin Undead now in AMC theaters (every Wednesday and Friday night this month, go se it!), we’re now gearing up for the release of Bloody Disgusting Selects: YellowBrickRoad, the second theatrical horror feature that’ll premiere at select AMC locations on June 1 (theater listings inside). Anyways, the English-language YellowBrickRoad, from Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton, stars The Signal‘s Anessa Ramsey in a very noisy chiller that “begins in the Fall of 1940 where the entire population of Friar, NH abandoned their homes and walked up an ancient trail, never to be seen alive again. Their fates have remained a mystery for over 70 years, until a team of researchers discover the trailhead and attempt to track the path the doomedcitizens of Friar took.”

BD Selects Website Launch: Release Dates for ‘YellowBrickRoad,’ ‘Cold Fish’ & ‘Atrocious’

Get ready for big things as we’re celebrating our tenth anniversary by taking over the horror world, and we’re bringing you all along for the ride.

This morning we “officially” launched the official Bloody Disgusting Selects website, the hub to all of our theatrical/VOD/DVD endeavors. There you’ll find theater listings, trailers, images, promotions and other interactive features forthcoming. We’ll be building it out with each release starting with the German zombie flick Rammbock: Berlin Undead, which opens in select cities (exclusively at AMC) on Wednesday, May 4.

While there, make sure to “Share and Tell” to give yourself a chance to win some tickets to one of the many screenings (we have TONS to give away, so make sure to “click to share and WIN”).

Bloody Disgusting Selects Acquires ‘Atrocious’!

As I’ve stated numerous times, I think the “found footage” subgenre is awesome. I also believe it’s here to stay. Sure, everyone and their moms are attempting to make their own cinema verite horror film, but how is that any different than when Halloween inspired a rash of slasher film that are still alive and well 30+ years later?

Sifting through hundreds of new films inspired by Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project and REC, we here at Bloody Disgusting believe we’ve unearthed a new batch of creepy footage that you guys are absolutely going to love.

Joining Bloody Disgusting Selects is Fernando Barreda Luna’s Spanish-language Atrocious, which landed on our radar after Ryan Daley reviewed it this past January. It had its world premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival, alongside Sundance in Park City, Utah. The pic joins the previously announced line-up of Rammbock, YelowBrickRoad and Cold Fish (more details).

It will be released later this year via AMC Theaters (every single Wednesday and Friday night, expanding if it does well), before arriving on VOD, DVD, online and television. The Collective and Bloody Disgusting close U.S. deal with sales outfit Celluloid Nightmares to Distribute Spanish Found Footage Thriller Atrocious

LOS ANGELES — March 16, 2011 — The Collective, a full-service entertainment management and content company, and top horror website BloodyDisgusting.com, have acquired all US rights from sales agent Celluloid Nightmares to Fernando Barreda Luna’s Spanish thriller Atrocious.

The film will be distributed theatrically in at least 32 key markets through The Collective and Bloody Disgusting’s partnership with leading theatrical and exhibition company AMC Theatres, as well as on DVD through The Collective’s home-video partnership with Vivendi Universal.

Directed by first time helmer Fernando Barreda Luna and produced by Jessica Villegas Lattuada and David Sanz. Atrocious is a Nabu Films and Silencio Rodamos Producciones production. The film premiered internationally at the 43rd Sitges International Film Festival and then at Slamdance this past January, garnering a tide of online buzz and quick comparisons to 2008’s Paranormal Activity. A U.S. remake is already in the works.

In April of 2010, Spanish police reported the discovery of 37 hours of recorded evidence that shed new light on a gruesome murder investigation. The found footage documents a family of five spending their holidays at their summer house, where brother-and-sister Cristian and July Quintanilla pass the time investigating a local urban legend of a girl who disappeared in the Garraf woods. As their investigation intensifies, strange occurrences in and around the house escalate rapidly, before culminating in unspeakable atrocities.

“We are thrilled to be bringing Atrocious to the US marketplace,” said Gary Binkow, a partner at the Collective. “It’s always exciting to showcase upcoming horror directors, and Luna is an obvious talent to watch. Atrocious proves that the ‘found footage’ subgenre of horror still has something new to bring to the table. We want to expose the American audience to more elevated horror than they’ve been getting in recent years, and Luna’s film is a prime example of that philosophy.”

Atrocious is the latest acquisition by The Collective and Bloody Disgusting since launching their distribution partnership with AMC Theaters dedicated to acquiring and marketing the best horror and thriller titles from the festival and international markets. The deal was negotiated by Binkow and The Collective’s Director of Acquisitions, Roxanne Benjamin. Nate Bolotin, a partner at Celluloid Nightmares handled the sale on behalf of the filmmakers.

Director Fernando Barreda Luna was born in Mexico in 1983. A screenwriter, editor, producer, and director, he’s the founder of production company Nabu Films. Atrocious is his feature debut.

Spanish-language ‘Atrocious’ Gets Found Footage Redo

Could this be the second coming of REC?

One of the cooler movies of the year is the “found footage” Spanish-language Atrocious, which Bloody Disgusting’s Ryan Daley was a pretty big fan of.

The boys over at Twitch are reporting that producers Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Insidious) have picked up rights for an American remake. Blum and Kavanaugh-Jones have become frequent collaborators, having recently teamed up on Insidious, which was picked up Sony at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Their next production is Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem, which begins production this fall.

Helmed by first-time writer/director Fernando Barreda Luna: “In April of 2010, Spanish police reported the discovery of 37 hours of recorded evidence that shed new light on a gruesome murder investigation. The found footage documents a family of five spending their holidays at their summer house, where brother-and-sister Cristian and July Quintanilla pass the time investigating a terrifying local urban legend. Slamdance ’11 REVIEW: Latest First-Person Horror Ain’t So ‘Atrocious’!

Getting quite a bit of buzz out of the Slamdance Film Festival (taking place kitty-corner to the Sundance fest) is the Spanish-language first-person psychological chiller Atrocious, which focuses on the case of a brother and sister who investigate a local urban myth while on holiday, resulting in strange occurrences at the family’s summer house.

Ryan Daley was lucky enough to be one of the first ever to see the film, which he calls a “success”: “While it doesn’t know any new tricks, Atrocious is a dog that perform the old tricks just fine. As the camera whips through the trees in well-edited POV shots, there’s something about the long sequences of night-visioned hedge maze stumbling that are completely hypnotic.”

This month’s Slamdance Film Festival ( January 21-27, 2011 in Park City, Utah) carries only one horror film, Fernando Barreda Luna’s Paranormal Activity-esque Atrocious, which we first told you about back in October. Gearing up for the festival premiere, inside we scored a trio of exclusive evidence photos. Dig through and see if you can find any clues. In April 4th of 2010, Quintanilla family was found murdered in their country side house. Police reported the existence of 37 hours of recorded evidence. Atrocious shows the real images of such evidence. Quintanilla family traveled to their old farm house in Sitges, where Christian and July investigated about the Legend of the Girl in the Garraf woods. Both of them used to record all day whatever they did. On the fifth day of their arrival they were found dead under strange circumstances. Atrocious shows the last five days of life for Cristian Quintanilla and his siblings. It also shows the strange situations that they lived in those moments and which remain unexplained.

Slamdance 2011 Accepts Only One Horror Film? That’s ‘Atrocious’

I’m absolutely floored by the Slamdance Film Festival’s selections for 2011, especially considering they accepted Paranormal Activity. The 17th annual fest, which takes place in Park City, Utah, simultaneous to the Sundance Film Festival, will screen 10 narrative films and eight documentary features in competition from Jan. 21-27. According to the press release, the only horror film playing is Fernando Barreda Luna’s eerie looking found-footage creeper Atrocious, a film we first told you about here.
