Founded by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross (Gone Girl, The Social Network), the new music festival dedicated to film and TV composers has been canceled.

Announced back in May, the event was scheduled to take place at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center on November 8.

Future Ruins shared an official statement on social media:

“Unfortunately Future Ruins will not move forward this year. The reality is, due to a number of logistical challenges and complications, we feel we cannot provide the experience that’s defined what this event was always intended to be. Rather than compromise, we’re choosing to re-think and re-evaluate.

“Meanwhile, we are sorry for any inconvenience and appreciate all the interest and support. Refunds will be automatically issued and ticket holders will receive an email with more information.”

In addition to Reznor & Ross, the event was set to feature John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape from New York), Danny Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands), Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin (Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead), Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein (“Stranger Things”), and Howard Shore performing the score of David Cronenberg’s Crash.

The line-up also included Cristobal Tapia de Veer (“The White Lotus,” Smile), Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow (Ex Machina, Annihilation), Hildur Guðnadóttir (Joker, “Chernobyl”)
, Isobel Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”)
, Mark Mothersbaugh (Thor: Ragnarok, The Royal Tenenbaums), Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Candyman), Tamar-kali (Mudbound), Terence Blanchard (Inside Man, Primal Fear), Volker Bertelmann (All Quiet on the Western Front, The Old Guard), and Questlove presenting the score works of Curtis Mayfield (Superfly).

Whether Future Ruins will attempt to relaunch next year is unclear at this time. Canceling the inaugural event a month in advance will be hard to recover from, but if anyone can do it, it’s Reznor.

Set across three stages, Future Ruins is designed to feel thoughtful and immersive, bringing this music to light in an environment where it has never been heard before. Every artist is a headliner, each with their own specially curated moment.

Each artist is encouraged to take big swings and reimagine their work for a live audience. Ranging from electronic sets and live bands to orchestral performances, fans have the chance to experience live debuts from composers who rarely appear onstage.

Future Ruins tickets go on sale next Wednesday, May 21 at 12pm PT.

“We created a significant amount of music and conceptual sound for Bird Box, a lot of which never made it to your ears in the final version of the film,” Reznor said in a statement. “We’ve decided to present you with this version of the soundtrack record that represents what Bird Box is to us.”

The statement continued, “For those interested, we will be releasing a more expansive physical-only offering this Spring that will contain an additional hour of music and artwork that colors further outside the lines. Lots coming in 2019.”

To celebrate the impending release, the label has announced an impending physical edition of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross‘s 2017 version of the iconic Halloween theme. Upon its digital release last year Reznor stated:

“I clearly remember my friends and I at 13 years old conning our parents into letting us see Halloween when it came out in 1978,” Reznor stated.

“We left the theater forever changed. We were damaged and scarred, with the shit genuinely scared out of us and that theme stuck firmly in our heads. John Carpenter, it’s your fault that I turned out the way I did.”

Speaking about the Reznor/Ross version, John Carpenter stated, “Moody and dark, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ version of Halloween does amazing justice to the original.”

The Limited Edition 12″ features Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s version of John Carpenter’s Halloween theme on one side, and Carpenter’s 2017 Anthology version of the theme on the other. Available on orange vinyl, and black vinyl.

If you’ve read the headlines over the past week, the Nine Inch Nails founder has been blasting celebrities – Taylor Swift, for example – for staying quiet amidst political turmoil.  “I have influence, and that it’s my job,” he stated. His demeanor has changed drastically over the three years it took for him to release his experimental trilogy of albums. It’s lead up to his breaking point.

Bad Witch is arguably the best of the three EPs, following 2016’s Not the Actual Events and last summer’s Add Violence. It also claims the loudest, angriest, and most hardcore song in years. “Ahead of Ourselves” is without a shadow of a doubt the angriest Reznor since his 2007 Year Zero, and the most hardcore since 1994’s masterpiece, The Downward Spiral. It’s also downright the most vicious, loud, and powerful track since “Burn” appeared on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. Alternating “between anxious beats and jarring vocals”, the track echoes his frustration with the state of our society, while also sharing the deep hopelessness he’s feeling. “Why try change when you know you can’t?”

In a recent interview with the Guardian, he explained some of these feelings:

“We aren’t these enlightened beings, here to take care of each other and think about our benevolent role in the universe as protectors and creators – we’re just a fucking mutation and an accident.”

“We’ve got dumber, more tribalised; we’ve found niches of other people that focus on extremity. For the miracle of everyone sharing ideas, I see a hell of a lot more racism. It doesn’t feel like we’ve advanced. I think you’re seeing the fall of the empire of America in real time, before your eyes; the internet has eroded the fabric of decency in our civilization.”

Frustration breeds rage and Reznor lets it all out on “Ahead of Ourselves” and the accompanying album, Bad Witch (out today). If this were to be the final Nine Inch Nails album, for whatever reason, it certainly ends with a perfectly-timed punctuation mark.

Interestingly, Ross isn’t glued to Reznor, embarking on a project with his brother, Fear and Nervous System’s Leopold Ross. Adam Wingard, director of Netflix’s massive live-action Death Note remake, tweeted out that the duo would be composing the score to the film, out on Aug. 25.

Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.

The movie stars Nat Wolff (Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars) as Light Turner; Margaret Qualley (The Nice Guys, The Leftovers) as Mia Sutton; Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton, Dope, Short Term 12) as “L”; Paul Nakauchi (Alpha and Omega) as Watari; and Shea Whigham(“Agent Carter”, “Boardwalk Empire”) as James Turner.

Wingard is a growing force in the genre community having directed A Horrible Way to Die, V/H/S, V/H/S/2, Blair Witch, The Guest and You’re Next.

On July 4th, NASA’s Juno spacecraft will be entering the orbit of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. It’s a mission that has been in the making for nearly five years, having launched on August 5th, 2011.

Today, a trailer was released to let people know what’s going on. In that trailer, you’ll hear the music of none other than composing duo Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, who also composed The Social Network and Gone Girl. The track, aptly titled “Juno”, is over 8 minutes meant to mimic the giant planet. The track is described as, “…deeply cinematic — from its feverish atmospherics to its chains of glassy melody to its haunting textures, which sound like the surface of some distant planet must feel.”

“Juno” has been made available on iTunes.

I’m writing a horror novel for National Novel Writing Month, and these were the five pieces I’ve listened to over and over again while writing. They inspire a certain sense of emptiness in me that I haven’t been able to find much anywhere else, each of them are hauntingly beautiful in their own way.

While Reznor has made it very clear in several interviews that he was disappointed in how this video turned out, it’s still a fun, intense 4 minute clip with a grim, rather distressing storyline.
