By the hoary hosts of Hoggoth indeed!  While it entirely fits within the Marvel aesthetic, the magical and mind-bending (as well as reality-bending) imagery looks pretty damn great.  We’ve been told the script had an almost pseudo-Lord of Illusions vibe, so it will be interesting to see if any such darker elements have made it into the final film. Judging off of what is shown here, the possibility is certainly there, at least.

There’s not much to go on in the way of plot still, aside from Dr. Stephen Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) maiming-accident and first encounters with Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), but that’s all we need at this stage.  The point of this trailer is to intrigue audiences and I suspect this trailer will do just that.  For now, this looks like a winner.

Still, many questions remain.  Is McAdams playing Clea or Night Nurse, as both have been rumored.  Hell, perhaps she is both!  Will Mordo turn on Strange and The Ancient One before the end of the film?  Exactly which big Strange nemesis is “Hannibal” star Mads Mikkelsen portraying?  Nightmare?  The Dread Dormmamu?  Someone else entirely?  Who is B-movie action star Scott Adkins playing?  A friend or a foe?  I guess we’ve got a ways to go before any of these (and other) questions are answered.

Robert Cargill.  It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Michael Stuhlberg, Benedict Wong, Amy Landecker, and Scott Adkins.

Story details on the film still remain scarce at this time, but here’s hoping that tonight’s trailer changes that.  The basic premise of the character’s source material is that he is a world-class surgeon whose abilities are taken away in a horrific accident.  After searching the world over to find a way to heal himself, he eventually finds himself under the tutelage of The Ancient One, who trains him in the mystic arts.  Now the Sorcerer Supreme, he must battle dark forces from our world and other realms.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays the titular role and he is joined by Rachel McAdams, who may or may not be playing eventual Strange apprentice, Clara.  Rounding out the supporting cast is Chiwetel Ejiofor as ally (and eventual nemesis) Baron Mordo, Michael Stulhberg as fellow doctor Nicodemus West, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, and Mads Mikkelsen as the villain (who may or may not be The Dread Dormmamu).  See what I mean by details being scarce?

In the comics, Mordo was also trained in the mystic arts by The Ancient One and eventually turned against his master, resulting in The Ancient One’s death.  It will be interesting to see exactly how much this film will stick to that origin as a backstory and where all of this occurs within the timeline.  Is The Ancient One still alive during the present?  Or will be only see Swinton in the form of flashbacks to Strange’s training?  Perhaps unearthly visions, consorting with Strange from the great beyond?  And will Mordo be the Sorcerer Supreme’s only adversary in this adventure?  I suspect we’ll know soon enough.

Regardless, this project’s cast is quickly beginning to take shape as the film marches towards production.  We fully expect more rumors and announcements to fly hard and fast in the coming weeks, especially since Marvel will no longer be stocking up on announcement for this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego (which they are skipping).  In the meantime, let’s contemplate how awesome Ejiofor will look if they actually go whole hog on the classic Mordo costume (they probably won’t, but one can dream)…
